erk, did a bit of a look around the other day, as I cannot post at all, (except to my wall and not to the news feed) and apparently am part of a trial group..unasked for, can't use it. changes everyday. Today, all my friends posts are showing up on the left side as a caption, my posts still don't register and I don't like it. it's totally disfunctional. Even things I send to people don't show up on their wall.

Star, unless you feel like shelling out nearly 20k in advance for Horizon. We went star, despite having a place at horizon. Yep, the lack of pool, is a PITA, but every other little thing at our school is just as it should be, and we are so happy with our choice. both schools however, are lovely, both have a great rep. (except for some people who feel there should be more at star) and our child has more than blossomed in a wonderful school. Early years will be almost impossible to get into, apparently the waiting list is huge. The 'older' kids have just started in senior school...and the school grows with our children, is exactly what we wanted. And they are law abiding fee takers as well ;)

I have never seen a washing machine here hooked up to a hot tap...they run on the cold tap only, one hose, one hook up. I'm sure some people have both hot and cold but I have never seen it. The main problem is, even with your machine set to cold, the water from the tank/pipes is HOT. You'll just need to seperate your colours/non colour fast and wash accordingly.

Go to any of the big sports shops....Go Sport and the like, and buy a camel bak one...loads of funky designs in both that non cancer inducing plastic and double skinned steel. Can drop them, throw them, run them over and they're great. They cost money, but I got fed up with spending even more on loads of the supermarket type ones and having them split, spill and generally behave in an unsatisfactory manner. The other thing I like about them is you can get new mouth pieces and the inside straw for them if they get bitten through or lost. hth

Thats not 'input', thats a judgement with no substance. What exactly was so unimpressive? I would be doing a little more research personally, and visiting the nursery unannounced myself before taking that particular piece of sage advice onboard ;) Of couse its a judgement but to say it a judgement with no substance is nonsense. I went there! I looked around and was not impressed, lots of crying children, bored looking staff not interacting with the children and a general bad vibe. There you go...theres some input, detailed, of what you observed. merely saying you were unimpressed gives no information what so ever except, you were just that, unimpressed.

I would approach schools once you have all the legalities sorted out, but also indoor play areas. They may be open to the idea of a class that compliments what they have on offer, and they have all the facilities in place.

If your thinking Liwa way, maybe look at Al Qasr Al sarab as well Bani Yas Island. As deserdoc has said, bani Yas is a nature reserve, and Qasr is in the middle of the most amazing desert scape, so a totally different option. Very luxurious too.

I looked around Blossom at um al sheif last week, it was a 'suprise' visit (I didn't have an appointment) and I was massively unimpressed with what I saw. Thanks for the input. Have you been to the other Blossom nursery i.e. blossom village nursery? Thats not 'input', thats a judgement with no substance. What exactly was so unimpressive? I would be doing a little more research personally, and visiting the nursery unannounced myself before taking that particular piece of sage advice onboard ;)

After a great deal of ponderation (and have pondered and pondered til head hurt!) and coming up with nothing definitive, I have decided to approach the subject rationally. Are you ready? *I only go to 3 supermarket type places in dubai *therefore it must be in one of those 3 supermarkets that I have seen the wonder soap (and I can see it in my minds eye, so unless thats playing tricks on me, it is here!) *I will visit each of those 3 supermarkets in the next 5 days and will come up with a reply for you. *exception to the rule....big choities on al wasl, I have been there in the last 3 months and can't rule it out of my equation. Hows that? :)

Thanks Aroha - do you think that if an company was to start employing handicaped personnel it would be difficult for the community to accept being surved, or do you think that this would just be teething problems? If that makes sense. I 'think' it really depends on what capacity the persons role is, and what the disability is. as Amy has said, she has a back line, productive position and is the 'make it so' person, and she has a mobility issue...she's not in a frontline position and her mobility is a not an issue. As has been said, it seems the local culture is to hide away our lesser able kids, they are something to be ashamed of, and are a form of gods punishment for some wrong doing. Now that mentality will take a generation to educate otherwise... my view is of course very different, but then my formative years were very different in my exposure to people with many different levels of ability. And even when I was growing up, I wasnt really the norm. (One of my friends from the assisted living house at the hospital had biked like crazy from his latest lawn mowing job to the central postoffice in town to withdraw $20 dollars to take his girlfriend to the movies, when I ran into him sobbing and hysterical outside the LOCKED doors of the post office and all the staff ignoring him. It was yet 5 minutes til closing too...can you picture an outraged 13 year old aroha going to battle for that misjustice? lol!) I don't even really know what these guys mental capacity/problems were..the ones with downs were mainly obvious, but the others...It just didnt register on my 13 year old self, except that their mental age was younger than my actual age. They all held jobs, had ameasure of self suffiency, and were for the main respected and treated with kindness within the greater community, and just about all were a pleasure to be around. I think, that there would be teething problems but I also believe that if there is a regular clientel and the support systems were put in place then over time it would become an accepted practise. It really does depend on the client base, what kind of service is provided? I just don't know otherwise, and have a lack of coffee so am rambling.

I too have to wonder if Dubai is truely ready. I've been in C4 many times when the kids from (assuming here) one of the special needs schools come in on a field trip of some description. For my self, the kids are a delight, and I enjoy seeing them work through their lists, and figure things out...but I come from a country where all the supermarkets have people with downs working as shelf stackers, trolley people, bag packers etc. My dad worked at a hospital in the assisted living department for disabled kids when I was 12-14, very formative years. I know first hand what they were capable of and how much satisfaction they got from their contributions. But I'm not the broad section of society that these kids would be running up against daily. pretty much everything I think/feel about this has been covered by Sanddy D and AA. otherwise.

I was doing nothing much when husbad called from the office and told me to turn telly on. We watched together for a bit, asking each other if it wasn't a strange film (like Welles' radio "War of the Worlds") and then shocked to realize it was real. I was worried because I knew a friend of mine's mother was travelling out of Boston that day. I sat glued to the telly crying till it was time to fetch dorter from school, there was supposed to be a apero at the school that evening, but I just picked her up and went home to watch again. That event politicized my daughter. Me too simples...took a long time for me to come to grips with the idea that it wasn't something like Welles' radio, and part of my brain just kept shying away from..this IS real...it would have been 'easier' to cope with if it was some sick movie permier or the likes.

Can only speak about our bus service...the driver rang yesterday (saturday) to confirm pick up and drop off times from our school, not raffles. I'd be concerned with such a 'relaxed' attitude to our kids and their transport to be honest.

The reason it's not anywhere in the handbook, is they can't legally ask for a security deposit. Yes the bursar will be rude about it, and yes, because school places are in high demand in dubai people will and do pay through the nose if they want to secure their childs place at the school. No deposit, no place. Phone the KHDA and get their advice if you like...some schools seem to have a 'little understanding' going on, and are outside what should be a blanket law. 500dh deposit on registration, refundable out of the first terms fees. You can fight it, but it can get ugly, so if this is your school of choice....well.

Loads of places to stay from 5 star resorts to basic beach bungalows, guest houses, villas for rent by week or month. We stay on a beach at Maenam, Chaweng is the party place. We've been going for 10 years to the same place/same family and have had the great pleasure of seeing it grow from a couple of hut like bungalows to a beautiful garden compound of bungalows. they still have the basic bungalows suitable for for backpackers...but the more 'nice backpacker' if that makes sense? We never book, just rock up and hope theres a place for us...never been disapointed yet :-) This place isnt self catering, they run a resturant, and you can either eat there or walk 5 mins to somewhere else on the beach. They may have bungalows with a kitchen, i just don't know. they also have a compound of self catering villas, but they are rented by the month I think.

Being blessed with course thick hair on arms and legs and coming from a conservative background, with a father who didnt believe in hair removal at all, and no mother to point me in the right direction for correct removal treatment, I have already made the decision that lil miss will have waxing on her legs when it becomes an issue for her. My hair has been the absolute bane of my life, and the teasing/conciousness of it starts very young. I won't let my daughter have the same ongoing problems all her life, so, when she notices that she has very thick hair on her legs (luckily very blond :)) we will remove it in a way that starts her off on the correct path for the rest of her life. Hopefully it's a ways down the track yet. I want her innocence to stay this way for as long as possible, but, little girls will be little girls and it's only going to take one of them to point it out to lil miss to start the crazy train going.
