Erm, I made us move to dxb even though himself is the earner. I think we may be the only people alive who actively sought to move here. (Have a love affair with deserts don't you know) I find it hard to remember some times that this is not a forever home, and that it's when we move on, not if. And when we do move on it won't be home, but somewhere else. For sure there are frustrations in living here (and as a note while I remember, has anyone tried being an immigrant anywhere else? some places make the red tape here look like a picnic in the park) and I took the OP's post to be a cheeky fare thee well to those frustrations. personally, I will be leaving with regret as I do love this place: I love my life, my friends, our desert, I love the way women come together when there is need, I love staying at home, I love the opportunity that gives me to explore my life as an artist, the chances I have to try new things and grow, to learn about different cultures, politics, religions. Ask me again in the middle of summer when I am cooped up with a hot and cranky daughter and that will be when the frustrations of living here have me in their grip and I find it hard to remember all that I do love about this place, when all the inequalities, eniquities seem to thump me about the head and make me want to scream.

I love when they say.... 'what have you done all day?' cleaning, cooking, laundry, grocery shopping, taxi service, and mom to two little ones apparently can't justify me sitting down and relaxing for an hour while the kids nap. Oh, I don't get that question. I do get asked 'what have you been up to?' to which my response is always: 'Making life easier for you, dear'. And when I'm really making life nice for DH, and he tells me -- in a heartfelt fashion -- that he loves me, my response is: 'I don't blame you'. :D right, thats the way forward. i am writing those responses down and keeping clipped to fridge.

Ah, but do you have a labour card denoting you as a 'domestic servant', aroha? ;) but I'm with frecks, it says on my passport that I am not allowed to work! and if what a maid does is conscidered work, and if I do her job here in this household i want her perks too! (actually just procrastinating as finding it increasingly difficult to be motivated about house work)

Arohadxb's house. Figure she will always have tents, survival gear and quite possibly scotch. :D not sure how effective our tents and survival gear would be if someone decided to drop a bomb on our house. I'll be taking the scotch and hanging out under a palm tree on an island for the duration. Welcome to come with :)

just for your info for when child is able to go on the bus: the pick up for Horizon in our Springs is 6am. And I'm only saying because our lil miss gets collected at 6.45am and it's hard yakka for the little ones (and me!), i hate to think how it would be nearly an hour earlier.

Great news! I am so happy to hear Guinness is home! Why did the Emaar security at M7 not call you (if it was them who found him)? I can't understand that, they called Dubai Municipality and not the owner. If anyone has any contacts within Emaar maybe we could find out the policy of security re lost/found pets and get it reviewed? Yes, it's a bit strange. Apparently, Guinness sat with the guard for quite a few hours - long enough for some other resident of Springs 3 to see her and play with her. Then we handed out posters to all the guards and still none of the guards said anything. It would be helpful if the guards knew what to do if they find a lost dog - besides call the municipality!!! But I have to say, she seemed well treated at the municipality. She wasn't hungry at all when she came home, so she must have been well fed. And she was in a fairly large enclosure that seemd clean. When I went to the gate at M7 to get your phone number guinness, the guards had no idea what I was talking about and when I made it clear it took them a very long time to find the poster you had made. Sometimes I think it depends on the guard, because at our gate we have often had the posters actually put up in the windows so they can be seen. Having said that, we now seem to have a rather weird rota system going on with the guards and you don't seem to get the same ones every day.

Am guessing that they are not calling anymore as am assuming that a lot of the dogs are abandoned..... and having spent lots of time tracking down previous owners who have left the country, they are no longer spending time doing it.... sad really. It's really sad. If they'd called Guinness the day dog Guinness came in he could have been back at home so much quicker...... I'm shocked as this was not what they told me when I went there the other month. They assured me that if an animal comes in and is clearly well looked after that they check the chip and make the call.....hmmmmmmmm - clearly not! It's a real shame, isn't it, because Guinness assumed the Municipality would call her if they'd found the dog. I don't quite understand why the security guards didn't call Guinness (the extremely busy (if not harrassed?) mother of 4), in the first place, because her phone number was on Guinness's (the dog's) collar. Anyhow, glad Guinness is home safe and sound. (Both of them). See, now I would have thought that the guards would have phoned Guiness too, especially as it appears they had her for a time. but at the gate just now and asking for the photo with G's phone number on it, they 1) didnt know what I was talking about and 2) had to search for some time for the poster. Thrilled to bits that everyone is happily reunited.

I don't know much about where she was, but just saw the thread about her possibly being in the Municipality, and so went down to spinneys to get Guinness's phone number off one of the posters and she said they'd got her back this morning! So glad she's home safe :):) lol! wonder how many phone calls she got from crazed EWer's this morning!

I don't know her, but her phone number is at the springs pet shop with a photo of guiness, it's not open yet though, but i could go there when it is if it helps? Or...try ringing vets where guiness has [posted the dog missing...they'll be open now ish and will have her number? OR someone in the same medows head to the quards, they should have her number.

I got giardia when we moved into our villa that hadnt been lived in for a while, from the tap water. Sitting there stagnant for a bit and boom! Last time i made ice cubes from tap water, thats for sure. It'll soon be time to be turning off the water heaters again.

the problem with the smacking law (in NZ any way) is that it's not been laid out clearly so everyone in the country understands it. An amendment was made to a law that allowed people who abused their children to use a loop hole that said they were entitled to use 'reasonable force'. That loop hole is now closed, (thank god) but every lobby group and it's dog has ordinary folk of the country believing that they may not use smacking as discipline any longer. And yet if you look up the law itself, it clearly states in laymens language that you may smack and under what circumstances. probably the most tricky to define is using some measure of force to correct a behaviour, however thats a digression.

DD never did anything wrong in public, she was terrified of strangers. DS was permanently connected to a 5 point harness until he was able to put it in writing that he would do as he was told. I was ticked off by women who questioned me attaching his harness to the seat at the front of the grocery cart....LIKE HELLLLLLLLLO......this boy can fly. Others always know best-my son needed suction every 5 minutes the first years of his life so I would lug his oxygen and suction equipment along when I went shopping-lost account of the number of times people physically tried to stop me when I was suctionning him and demanded to know what I was doing to my poor baby-when I asked if they'd prefer I let him die they generally backed off....... not quite as drastic as your baby wuffles but lil miss gets bleeding noses, and they can be quite spectacular. I have lost count of the times I've been told I'm treating it all wrong by passers by. I got so irritated one day with a particularly bad bleed and are particularly persistent woman I did snap and ask her is she'd like me to let daughter choke to death on it. Grrrrr, well meaning yes, but I had explained more than once to her, and quite politely that I knew what I was doing. Lady, I have my hands full here!

oh, I think amyaus posted in the spirit of sisterhood, and surely there must be some comfort for the poor woman knowing that not everybody looks at a tantruming toddler and it's mother in distain, but rather compassion and understanding. One day lil miss was off on a big one in the MoE and i was having to physically restrain her...her shoes went flying everywhere and I felt like some kind of inept criminal. This really nice lady bought over the shoes and said, 3 huh? and i nodded yes, and it was her quiet support and wry smile that enabled me to get out of there with some small shred of dignity left. Though I did feel I right gawp giving her bottom a smack last weekend at the tri athlon and realised after that the TV helicopters doing the filming were right on top of us...ooops.

That's what I thought - mind you, there were a number of foul looks being shot her way when he started screaming, I heard one woman (who was there with maybe a friend/sister/relative who had a maid pushing their trolley) make comments about being a bad mother and I looked at her with a maid to push her trolley and thought 'really?' really?! People actually had the audacity to call her a bad mother even under their breath because her children were behaving like kids behave the world over? heartless idiots. upthemselves sanctimonious drop kicks. ignorant fools. there, i feel better now. poor woman.

I got some from ( i think) toys are us a couple of years ago at festival city...sometimes either go sport or the sports shop at Times square have really nice ones. It's retro you know? I love my roller skates...now I just need to find someone who stocks proper stoppers for them....

Sorry, I am new to the 'maid world' but do you provide the maids with the cleaning products or do they bring them from the company? Lynn 66 - my husband takes the laundry with him for ironing in some place in Bur Dubai and they charge AED 2 which I find great value and they do a good job. The laundry near us charges AED 5 per piece. you supply everything for them.

I can recommend Dr Baghat as an ENT...lil miss didnt have her tonsils out with but he did her grommits. Ph: 04 349 9100. he operates out of american or belhoul. (we went with belhoul, mainly because we could get in sooner, but it was half the price as well. Always a bonus, and it was a very good experience)

To stop all the arguments why don't all stay at home mums get rid of their maids and do their own housework and the working mums can bring granny across to look after the kids. Problem solved. :) :) :) except for the poor maids then being out of work with no income to support their families and the economy's of at least 2 countries collapsing over night causing a ripple on effect through surrounding nations and eventually leading to the distruction of the earth as a result. sounds like a CIA plot to me :)

I'm the nightmare one in our house always awake at 5.30 every day!!!!! I get excited when one of the kids wakes up cos I've got someone to talk to!!!!! Luckily for me my little boy always wakes early and we have a lovely chat in the mornings we leave daddy and little girl to carry on sleeping as they both seem to have our share of the sleep gene! You're welcome to come round at the crack of sparrows and keep my lot entertained. They seem to both have inherited their fathers ability to get by on minimal sleep :-( heres a plan....all the get up at stupid o clock humans can share a house on a thursday night and the rest of us can sleep in til, oh I don't know....7? sigh, seems like some kind of beautiful dream to me...
