Sasha, I really hope you give Qatar a try! What I like most about being here is actually the safety factor.. When I lived in Montreal, I always felt a little nervous alone at night or at an ATM but am much, much more relaxed here! It's not uncommon for people to leave their car engines running when they go in to the dry cleaners or to get a cup of coffee and I often leave my front door unlocked. Social Life- I'm married but most of my girlfriends here are single and having a great time! Most bars (in hotels) have a ladies night one night of the week, and we love getting together a group of girls and having a night out. There are some shady joints, like anywhere in the world, but at most of these places it's very common to see groups of singles out together. Dress Code- like the others mentioned, keep your shoulders and knees covered. However, at hotels (where most of the socialising happens as only these have liquor licenses) and within expat areas like the Pearl, I've seen women wearing short shorts, dresses, etc. I think it is a matter of being mindful of where you are going and with whom. You will figure it out really soon. Housing- I have friends living in Education City and have been there to visit them. I don't know if that's where you'll be living but it's a really nice compound with a great community feel to it. Noise levels have been totally ok when I have gone. Media/Entertainment- there are quite a few English channels showing most of the sitcoms and dramas, as well as plenty of cinemas showing new releases. I prefer downloading episodes of my favourite shows though and watching them in my own time. you'll find most English language magazines at the supermarkets pretty much as soon as they come out. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions, I've spent most of my life as an expat in the Middle East, but have only been in Doha since January. It really is a nice place to live! Definitely very, very comfortable, I'm sure the others know what I'm talking about lol. Hope that helps!
