Snowflake - The FF volunteer has read your post and is going down at 8am in the morning. She asks is there someone she can speak to in the management company? Who did your friend speak to? This would help enormously.

I'll text my FF contacts, but honestly snowflake, chances of an instant solution are slim. If there is any possibility you could take them into your apartment/villa and advertise them for adoption in Spinneys, then this would be best. By next Sunday, I will have 5 kittens aged 6 - 18 weeks at mine, plus two pet cats, plus two dogs, so they can't come here. All kittens were rescued from life/death situations. And all need homes. Sorry I can't be more positive. Edited to add have got in touch with FF volunteer who got these guys spayed/neutered. She is going to go down there and check it out. edited by assisi on 19/07/2011

Even though all my pets are 'export ready' I'm so pleased that the UK government has finally seen sense and come into line with the rest of the EU :) Hopefully this will mean lots more dogs and cats out here in Dubai are adopted and taken home :) (or is that wishful thinking lol)

http://www.defra.gov.uk/news/2011/06/30/new-rules-pet-passports/ Basically means from January 2012 - no more need for rabies blood test and 6 month wait if taking animals from UAE to UK ... just ensure they are rabies vaccinated ... Also, if, say you want to import your pet to UK from India, Vietnam etc (non-listed non-EU country) just ensure rabies blood test is 3 months old. Good news for lots of our canine friends (and will help the pockets of owners) So ... if you were considering adopting a pet out here, but were put off the strict rules regarding importing back to UK, then you might want to think again edited by assisi on 30/06/2011

Change of plan last night ... we decided to write a message on a piece of ribbon 'If you own this cat, please call *******', and then carefully attached the ribbon to his collar (ensuring no dangerous loops etc), and let him out again. Theory being that if he arrives back again tonight for the 5th night with the ribbon still attached, he actually is lost/abandoned etc, rather than just living a few doors away, and if that's the case we'll bring him in for the weekend and get a chip check etc. We let him back out at about 8pm last night (he usually spends from 6-8pm in our garden before wandering off again anyway), and I haven't had a call yet ...

Okay - back again for a fourth night in a row, and husband has 'cat-napped' him and put him in the spare room ... he was panting with the heat, and his fur had clods of mud attached to his fluffy belly ... Will take him for a chip check tomorrow.

I have two cats, and two dogs, and have a pet sitter visit them at my home twice a day while I'm away. I don't go away more than 9-10 days maximum, however, this costs me approx 700-800 dirhams. This suits my pets, as they are relatively old, and don't like change, and are at their happiest in their own environment. They have had the same sitter for a number of years, who I trust, and have never had a bad experience with. I think what I pay is highly affordable and competitive, for the service I get. So ... I think it's not about affordability, it's more about people caring for their animal's wellbeing, and being bothered to a) shop around if something that fits their budget and b) to book well in advance of peak periods.

Hungry - eats a whole dish of food, and lonely (sits on the other side of our glass patio doors wanting company of our pet dogs/cats the other side). I think he may have wandered ... but wandered too far. Nothing on his collar - might put a note on it tomorrow night in case he lives just down the road ...

I put it back on as again not sure if he just lives down the road. I might do the trick of putting a note on the collar if he comes back tomorrow night. edited by assisi on 07/06/2011

If he's doing the same tomorrow, I'll take him for a chip check Wednesday afternoon. Have already checked Dubizzle, EW, posted on 'The Villa' forum, and checked FF website for 'missing' cats ... he's not a street cat, as he's part semi-longhair, and is dark ginger, with big paws. He hasn't been castrated so I think he's looking for a lady ...

Get the rabies blood work done (which has to be couriered to the UK), and they will send you a lab report stating that the rabies titre test is okay. This lab certificate is essentially your 'passport' ... and they can enter the UK without quarantine from 6 months of the date of the certificate. If you go at the say 3/4 month point, they will only have to spend the balance of the 6 months in quarantine.

Just thought I'd re-bump the thread as they have now departed and wanted to update you all. Firstly, on Day 5 of the holiday the 2.5 year old went down with chicken pox. Spots *everywhere*. So what was meant to be a 8 day holiday, turned into a two week one ... *nightmare*! Some 'highlights' over the two weeks were:- a) My sister in law is some sort of freak ... she constantly wants to be a 'martyr mum' ... has both girls on different routines, eating different meals at different times, and was generally cooking in the kitchen at 9pm at night (lamb mince, stewed apple, boiled chicken and sweet potato, steamed fish and green beans) even though she had an ample supply of organic packets etc "but you can't let them get used to packets, otherwise then they won't eat home cooking" was the line. She also spent their nap times doing washing and ironing (an average of 2 loads per day through the stay!). b) The thing that upset me the most was their discipline / punishment to the 2.5 year old *and* 7 month old. I don't think shouting 'no' or 'that's disgusting' at a 7 month old for blowing raspberries when eating, after you've just been blowing raspberries for play, is right, but I may be corrected here by experienced mums (I'm not one). Also the 2.5 year old was frequently put in a chair facing the wall when she misbehaved, and was basically force fed one day when she didn't fancy eating when she had chicken pox. c) They haven't been out as a couple since the 7 month old was born, and even though I arranged a sitter one night so we could go out, my sister in law turned this opportunity down. d) My brother in law is completely under the thumb and is ordered about continually. e) The only 'time slot' we could go out any day was between 3pm and 5/6pm to 'fit' in with the routines. I think I need therapy after the last two weeks (and a medal!)!

I booked mine with KLM through Schipol last night for July. DXB-LON there, then NCH-DXB back - 3800 Aed. Just a tip ... the Thursday overnight flight I wanted was 1000 dirhams per person more expensive last week, than when I booked last night. And the flight wasn't 'highlighted' as a cheap flight (although was), and first time I put the payment through it said it had ran out of seats on selected flight, so had to do it all again (same flights) and it worked. I sometimes wonder about these computer based booking systems ...

Sue you're a lifesaver :) The paed said that the baby might not get it as still has high immunity from breastfeeding and mother's placenta etc ... no immunisation as it's not that common to immunise for chicken pox in the UK currently. The 2.5 year old has got it everywhere though - in mouth, throat, eyes, fingers, back, stomach, groin - and spots only started yesterday morning, and more appearing today. Looks like it will be a good 7+ days from now before the last spots scabbed over ...

Thanks for everyone's informative messages ... off to the doctors this morning at 8.30 for a check with the paed and a letter to say it *is* chicken pox (needed for insurance), and some advice about how contagious (ie should she be quarantined until the spots have scabbed over). EK say they can change flights to an open ended return for £75 each (which insurance will cover), and then we wait and see. Worry is about their 6 month old baby getting it too now ...

Just wanted to re-bump this thread to thank everyone who has lent me highchair, car seat, toys, books etc for the holiday. They arrive tonight and everything's ready. Janesul - I didn't need to borrow your microwave steriliser in the end, as someone at work brought one in, but thanks for the offer anyway. The carseats are strapped in the car ready for the airport run this evening, and the wine is in the fridge ;) There have been further *crazy* emails ("do you have an ear thermometer and a non-slip bathmat?" (Yes), "can you buy fruit and vegetables in Dubai?" (Err, yes) etc), but I've managed to weather the storm so far :) Thank you again, and wish me luck :)

We've looked into this before, and really like Singapore as a next destination for us (we have two dogs who would go with us). Your dog would have to do 1 month in quarantine, whether pet passported or not, at Singapore, and this you should book *now*, as quarantine spaces are very limited. But I believe the quarantine faciltlies are 5* and air conditioned, and you can visit regularly, so could give you time to find the villa you want while not having the dog in tow. Singapore is very dog-friendly, so I would have no worries about mine staying in kennel facilties there. Good luck!

Hi ACB ... I am 30kgs overweight, but have lost 8kg since Jan by smaller portions / healthy eating / low carbs. I'm determined that I'm going to lose it all this time (and not put back on), and as another 'string to my bow' tried the Hollywood 24 hour Diet this week. It's basically a fluid (water and a juice/drink) diet that you stick to for 24 hours (no food/caffeine) and on the bottle it says you lose 5lb in 24 hours (which I was sceptical about), however, I did it this week and low and behold, I lost 5lb in 24 hours. I know some of this is 'water weight', but 24 hours after I finished (ie today) there is only 1lb back on. I don't know whether it will work long term (they recommend you do it once or twice a week), but being morbidly obese, I'm prepared to give anything a go. I bought mine at a health food store in Dubai Mall - 50 dirhams for a bottle (which is 24 hours worth). Just thought I'd share.

We live in a 4/5 bed plus maids detached villa with a private pool at 'The Villa' (at junction of 66 and Emirates Road, behind Falcon City) and are not on any flight path as such (other than a handful of military planes accessing the 'secret' airbase out the back). We paid 120k in February, and paid about 8k to get the garden landscaped. Would totally recommend this area as a possible location for you. Try Helena at Landmark Estate Agents.

Well, just back from big Choithrams and managed to get UK Aptamil (formula and half a dozen ready-made cartons), half a dozen Ellas Kitchen fruit/veg puree pouches, 2 x Pampers sensitive babywipes, and 2 x Organix baby rice! Re the Aptimal, I think nearer the time, I'll suggest she brings a half tub with her if she thinks babe will need more than 1 tub for the 8 days they're here. Will email you SL13 re handover sometime mid-May :) I emailed her re nappies, and she's decided to bring her own - phew! However, on her last email she then said "We should probably speak a week before just so you know what 'basics' we might need (milk, pasta, eggs, cheese, fresh fruit etc)." lol (like we obviously wouldn't have those in the cupboard?!)
