Thanks girls, feel a little more reassured. One things I'm not sure about is how do teens go about socialising? Obviously there is no public transport and people say don't drive late at night? I Dubai, they would get the train or Kareem taxi thing, where we currently live, we have a driver. When we go to Joburg, I'll then be the driver again. Any thoughts During the week they do after school sport and that is kind of like socialising. After school sport in SA is on a totally different level than Dubai. In Dubai its below average compared to SA. On weekends kids have sleepovers or stay over at each others homes until a parent comes to pick them up. Compound kids just ride bicycles to each others homes and stay&play there. Xbox and Playstation is very popular among the older kids of course. Younger kids more swim time and running around the garden when not watching cartoons.

Half of my family stays in Johannesburg and have not been affected by crime. You just need to not be flashy and stay low key. Your son will have an excellent social life as Saffas are very friendly and welcoming. Dainfurn to Rosebank is a 32 minute drive so good location. Dainfurn to AISJ is about 18 minutes drive. Everything give or take depending on traffic. You will be fine.

DESS hands down! There is a good mix of nationalities so whomever told you its more Western obviously havent been to the school in ages or perhaps didnt get into the school! In my son's class alone there are only 3 British kids and the rest are from countries all over the world so there you have it. Your source is quite wrong. DESS has great learning support teachers (mine get help with reading) and the teachers are all warm and kind as well. The parents are super nice too....Yes, I am a DESS parent and proud of it! :)

All those beauty salons in Karama do great jobs in eyebrow threading. They shape and clean up your eyebrow which is great. Also in Oud Metha are plenty salons that are great at threading. I agree those Indian ladies are magnificent with eyebrows!

Most people just get a cable tidy up kit from Ikea or a hardware store and do it themselves. You dont need an "agency" to do it.

Perhaps time to go home? Instead of spending all your savings and ending up with nothing in a country where you will never have a passport or any rights? Sorry to sound harsh but I see it so often in Dubai. People staying for months on end hoping to score another job and then ending up poorer than they were before they came to Dubai. Large Companies are actually preparing to give out another batch of redundancies before the next Eid and Summer holidays starts in 2017 so the chances of actually getting a job now is close to zero. Think of it as a new beginning back home with a good CV to support you.

Just dress normal. Strappy tops are fine. Shorts are fine. Just dress modestly when its ramadan time but further on anything goes.

As the previous poster said. Have your xrays done first before worrying. Perhaps by this time the scarring has healed a lot and is barely visible. Dont let this opportunity pass you by.

Its a super small dusty town. Very boring but super cheap rent and large apartments. No social life there. They usually drive to Dubai for some activities. My sister in law lives there. Her apartment is bigger than some villas in Dubai.

Hilton in Manhattan has a great location! Smack in the middle between times square and the park and one street away from the fashionable Fifth Avenue. If you want something more economic then Holiday Inn also has a great location and their rooms are large. Even more affordable is booking something via www.airbnb.com

Have you registered at recruitment agencies? Some are better than other. Also sign up for temporary positions so that you at least have some income. Definitely downscale and start selling furniture and electronics. I cant imagine how you must feel being single and in debt in a country that is not your own....Good luck! I dont think it is age though...I know plenty people who are very well educated and experienced who cant even score an interview. The market currently in Dubai is terrible and when you read the newspapers even oil companies in Dubai are sending their employees packing. Do you have family in your home country who can loan you money to get out of debt? I would leave the country after paying the debt and try job hunting somewhere else....

Marina consists of a bunch of one ways and constant standstill roads. Just getting out of Marina in the morning would be the biggest headache. There is always construction or renovations going on in that area. Not worth it. I would choose Downtown or Business Bay area instead. Central enough for your hubby to reach work in a few minutes(10-18 minutes).

HR and L&D people only get jobs if you know someone within the company that can give your cv special attention and if you are already living in Dubai. If you are applying from overseas forget it. There are people with MBA's and living in Dubai who cant get a job or even get shortlisted for an interview. Nobody is hiring. in fact the opposite is happening...always happens just before summer holidays...

Hi, dear Natasha, i have the best advice for you , 1. let him play around dont argue with him too much... 2. and dont go for divorce its a hard world to live by ones self and you also have kids ,please dont bring divorce even in your mind. 3. if you are with him he will have to pay all the expenses and in the end his life will be hard (keeping feets in 2 boats) he will realize it . 4. be patient and just let him know that he can do what the **** he wants to but also by doing your thing like always in daily routine make him feel you were there for him always and he also has responsibility for you and his kids , just let him loose he will get it in time . 5, you wont have more demands then his new lover just let him realize it by letting him free to do what ever he wants and in time he will realize it. FINALLY BY TIME EVERY THING CHANGES AND IF YOU DIVORCE HIM HE WILL BE WINNER AND BY NOT DIVORCING HIM HE WILL BE BOUND TO HIS RESPONSIBILITY'S HE WONT BE FREE, Sorry but this has to be the worst advice I have ever read on this forum. I'm shocked!!

At Year 10 it is not advisable to change school curriculums. American to English is very different. American is a lot more laid back and English curriculum can be quite hardcore. If it was the other way around it would be easy as all other curriculums are a breeze compared to English curriculum. I changed my children from American to English when they were in Year 1 so I have only primary experience. I do not regret it at all however I would never even try to do that in Year 10.

I did call them. The etisalat operator did a ping test and I had to reset and uplug the router and restart etc. The internet started working normal again and after we finished the conversation the internet went back to being dead slow. I think they know its slow but they are just pretending nothing is wrong and then making you plug and unplug things.

There are affordable schools. These schools cost almost the same as K12 homeschooling program. http://whichschooladvisor.com/guides/seriously-affordable-british-schools-in-dubai/ I have friends who placed their child in Pristine Private School after falling on hard times and their child is doing well. The school is not fancy but they get the job done and that is what we all want at the end of the day.

Better she gets on that plane and negotiate with her husband from a country where she has rights as a woman. If her husband is Emirati he will always win here and the greedy lawyers will take all the money she still has left even though they know she wont win here. Sorry sounds bad but after living here 17 years I always see men who win these things even when they have zero interest in the kids. They just want to hurt the ex-wife and they are very spiteful about it too.

If I were you I would definitely do this. One of mine is the youngest in his class and struggling. If I knew they could wait a year more I would. The older boys definitely thrive a lot more in the classroom. Especially if they are in an english curriculum school where schooling is even tougher.

My husband wants to take the kids for their first ski trip and to see snow for the first time. I personally hate snow and cold weather but am going to take one for the team. Is there any ski resort that is easy to fly to from Dubai (Europe or US)? And super child friendly? Also this is going to be in April so needs to be a place that still has some snow during April. TIA!

I've had experience of both and I can tell you that the ethos of non-profit schools comes through in their communication with parents, facilities and general manner towards education. I would not want to go back to a for-profit any time soon. GEMS schools, in particular :) We switched from a (very sought after) non-profit to a GEMS school and for us the experience was 100% beneficial - wish we'd started at GEMS, my child has a bright future compared to 'no hoper ' as quoted by DE**... but that's my own personal experience ... my child will graduate from GEMS this year with an awesome qualification and a very bright future Which Gems school did you go to if I may ask?

If your children are happy and prefer life there then its kind of very clear. Do what is best for them. It has only been 6 months. It will take much longer to adapt again as you stayed here for 7 years. Wait it out for longer.

3 of my friends who left Dubai are now back and one is trying to get back here They hated the UK and struggled to settle there. We will always have people who leave and many who come. I love going home but cannot see myself settling there just yet. What is wrong with the UK? Why does everyone hate it there!? None of my friends went to the UK - they've gone to Canada, South Africa, the US and Europe which might be why they are so happy? Is the rule, "go home unless you are from the UK and in that case, stay as long as humanly possible?" I have to agree with sheikhandbake. All my friends who went back to their home country (US,South Africa,Australia,NZ and even Philippines) are extremely happy however all my UK friends are miserable. They are the only ones...
