I have 2 friends who married French men. They both lived in Dubai very long before going over and living in France and they both absolutely love it now! One is even taking up a cooking course in French cuisine. Reading your thread reminded me of their complaining and moaning before they moved. They were also scared but now they are so good at their French. Dont worry. You will have a lovely life there. Your just scared of the major change that is going to happen in your life and that is okay. Start listing the positives and you will see you will have lots to look forward to.

Hi ladies,does anyone know of a programme that we can use at home to teach our children to speak and understand Afrikaans? My kids are still small (3+5yrs) but do not know a word of Afrikaans which might be a problem if we return to SA in the future.

Not that its an excuse but this is probably one of the most busiest times in the aviation sector and lots of things go wrong. Go to their airport office and speak to someone. It would probably take longer than normal however if your at their airport office make sure you fill out all the necessary papers if you have not already done so. No need to create a scene every time things do not go your way. I dont understand how people in Dubai think that is the acceptable way of behaving.

Eid in October is very busy in Dubai. Tourists are all over the place as the weather is nice then. Lots of hotels are already fully booked even though they push up the prices for eid in October. Nice time to go to parks and go swimming at the beach too.

Tough times ahead for many in this category, especially those with kids and school fees. Tell me about it...I get stomach cramps just thinking about school fees that rise EVERY year. Wish it was the same with our salaries.

In the old days people didnt really bother to fix their children's teeth if they were below 7/8 as they didnt deem baby teeth important. Today we know baby teeth are very important. Fix your child's teeth as you dont want her to lose her baby teeth prematurely. Only old fashioned dentists still believe in letting it be and giving medication and wishing for the best (seriously antibiotics?!). If a baby tooth is lost too early (due to rot and cavities) and the adult tooth is not ready for eruption, the remaining baby teeth may shift and crowd or interfere with the eventual eruption of the adult tooth. <em>edited by Asti on 29/08/2013</em>

Defnitely 2 days together. That way she gets the hang of things at the nursery and understands the routine. If its separate days she will feel out of tune with things and take much longer to adapt to her new surroundings.

Get an agency maid to come in twice a week to keep the place in reasonable order.Most agencies charge dhs35 per hour for 4 hours minimum. That would solve things with regards to housekeeping. People do not really change and he seems comfortable with this setup.

Avoid Iceland. Overpriced and the swim water is boiling hot. No temperature control at all and the staff all look miserable. Not worth it at all. Wild Wadi is having summer promotions. Nice for a day out and plenty of areas for elderly and young to sit in the shadow or in shallow water. Staff are super nice there too.

Not all government employees work less... I work for the Government and I work a lot more hours that my DH! Police, Fire Services, Civil Defence, Airport Security, hospitals (gov ones)... they are all Government employees. When you're planning your Eid break, the airport doesn't close, the police don't stop patrolling, and civil defense are still on duty. Look at last Eid and the flood in the Gardens. DEWA, the police and civil defense all worked through the night,and all are Government employees. There are many passionate Government employees that work to keep the city running, safe, and provide a secure and enjoyable environment in which you live whether its a normal working day, the middle of the night, or an Eid holiday. edited by nels on 23/08/2013 True. I think its mostly just bank and etisalat employees that enjoy the benefits of all the off days. The rest are still working shifts to keep the city and airport running.

Best to get fulltime maid. Especially for the days when your child is sick and stays home from school. Thats what everyone does here as they dont really cater to working parents at schools here.

I dont think they are strict about the age stuff anymore. My MIL runs a business here and she just turned 70 and had her visa renewed. No questions about age or anything. They dont even look.

This may be a very silly question, but does the K in k12 stand for Kindergarten. Can kids start at 4? Also do any of you that use it get it covered by your company. My husbands company says they don't think they do as its not a standard facility. Yes,its kindergarten to grade 12. :) Last time I checked with them it was dhs18 000 per year.

Hi all I am new to this and would like to know if i cant teach or what jobs i can look for in dubai. I have a degree in social studies and I am a qualified career guidance practitioner. I have over a years experience as a primary school teacher from my home in Ireland but I am not a qualified teacher. Is it only teachers with a license that can avail of work here now? I am hearing mixed reports. thanks :) edited by Guzzie on 20/08/2013 Choueifat would love you. They prefer Irish people with any degree.

You can do homeschooling for a year (register with K12 academy for that) or until a place becomes available somewhere or maybe try a different curriculum school (american or british) just until you find one that is better suited?

Let your husband go to the bank with you and get your money. It will be very difficult to prove racial profiling to the police and I am sure you dont want that kind of drama. Let your husband transfer to another bank. As you have been living here for some time you would know its not just banks that stereotype. Yip,I asked a university admissions officer if private school educated children get preference above public schools kids when it comes to admissions and I was told the school the child went to is irrelevant,they just want to see the grades. Burst my bubble somewhat as I thought my child had an advantage being in a private school but I guess not. There are plenty good public schools out there (although not in Dubai) where children also get excellent grades. <em>edited by Asti on 09/08/2013</em>
