depends on what you mean by 'affordable' - what is the budget you have in mind and how many bedrooms are you looking for?

i had breakfast there once - wasnt impressed at all. My husband makes better scrambled eggs at home and the smoked salmon was so salty that it wasnt even edible - on other words a waste of my cash. I also find Carlucchio's to be overpriced - 24 dhs for a 'bread tin' that contain 3 slices of bog-standard bread and one croissant! I am sticking to Whittards of Chelsea that has decent food that is affordably priced: 24 dhs for an eggs/toast/hash brown breakfast with your choice of hot drink PLUS an orange juice :)

custody will go to mums unless there is something seriously wrong with them. If the husband is accused of adultery there is no way he will get custody anyway! the only time you stand to lose custody is when you re-marry and if the ex-husband comes to claim custody - trust me, i talk from hard personal experience! some men are such dogs!gaaaaawd!

another possible concern is visa issues - the husband is probably sponsoring the entire family so what happens when he goes to the jail house?! Petal, does your friend have a job? I really pray she does. Before she takes any steps, she needs to make sure she a good amount of money to tide her over for a while...feel really bad for her poor thing!

Yes ladies! I have finally decided to take the leap and buy my first set of 'proper forever' cookware! After doing some research on whats available locally and online I am veering towards the 'Simply Calphalon' range - the 14 piece set retails for USD 299 on their website. They do sell them at Jashanmals here but they are so much more expensive! On the other hand, the Calphalon website don't deliver to the UAE so i will have to make some kind of an alternate arrangement to be delivered in the US itself and then sent here....DH seems to think this is too much fuss but I honestly haven't found anything as good value when I look at the Marks and Spencers site or John Lewis (buying from the UK would be easier) any suggestions on something more easily available? or any feedback from ladies who use Calphalon cookware?

The bottom line for me is that if everyone can see that you've had work done THE MINUTE they see your face/body, then really whats the USE? True admiration will only be earned for something you have naturally or because you work hard to take care of yourself...not because you have a couple of millions to burn so stepped into the plastic surgeon's office. Madonna doesn't look bad but it is very obvious that she has had fillers in this picture. Don't get me wrong I am not absolutely against plastic surgery but i think there is something to be said and admired about aging gracefully and being proud of yourself just the way you are:) edited by Ayda247 on 12/09/2011

we did it for my son when he was about 6 months (for religious reasons). He healed well and there were no problems but let me warn you it was very very tough for me to watch! I would advise you to let your DH and perhaps your mum if poss or other relative go in with your DS We had done it at a private hosp (cant remember which now) but they injected anesthetic right on to his bits and pieces before they started! I wasnt expectng this at the time and was really shaken myself..let alone my poor DS who was shrieking off his head! make sure you know EXACTLY what the procedure is so there are no last minute surprises. having said this, DS healed just fine..I believe we were given an ointment to put in his bath to help him heal quicker. Good luck!

I had a friend who used to volunteer at the Al Wasl hospital..they have a section for abandoned babies and toddlers i think. They also need help to care/play with children who have cancer. My friend did this for a while but found it emotionally overwhelming for her as some of her 'kids' died and it was very hard. Give them a ring though and see what you can do and Kudos for such a lovely thought!

My biggest sympathies and i cant imagine what your friend is going thru..May God give them strength. Her son has moved ahead in his journey and we will all follow. Everyone has their day and time and we have to try and remember that Earth is not our home..we are only visitors. Still its very hard!

You would think so but actually no! what happens is you can fill in the online form and then the Home Office print it and mail it to you for your signature (this in itself takes a min. of 5 working days if you are already in the UK and if they know you are outside the Uk they wont do it!) after that you sign, attach pics and post back - its a long process and for us time is an important factor..

You cant apply for a UAE license without a residence visa unfortunately but maybe what you can try and do is approach the RTA as soon as you have received your visa approval (before your medical test and passport endorsement) and explain to them that your UK license is expiring so please can they consider the fact that your residence visa is already approved but just not issued yet.. That will save you a bit of time...good luck!

wow, thanks you all , ladies, for the various responses. Most of your answers about the epidural seem to be positive..The fact is I am REALLY scared of having another emergency C-section and I have a feeling that I might just decide not to even try a natural birth and just go for an elective C-section. I know I'm a coward but it was so horrible last time and i was stuck in hospital for over 8 days because of high fever and an infection..I just want to have a bit more control this time if poss!

I am finding all this quite boring now. I had simply replied to a lady who was wondering how much ppl pay their maids. I don't need to justify myself to anyone. I have a happy home and happy maid and that's all that counts. End of.

I think I quite clearly stated that the AGENCY advised us to pay her AED 500 and we have this in writing. Incidentally, I know a few family friends who employ Ethiopians and pay them the same because this is the rate they have been advised. I also have another family friend who pays her Ethiopian maid a higher salary because she speaks perfect English and has a few years of experience under her belt.

I live just fine, thank you very much...and incidentally so does my maid. Everyone pays according to what they can afford and this is what the agency suggested I pay. You can be as judgmental and holier-than-thou as you like. It doesn't bother me as I have an arranegment that works quite happily for all parties involved.

I wish I could afford to pay my maid AED 5000 but not everyone can! Our maid lives with us full time and, like I said, she is completely illiterate and had never even stepped on a plane before coming to Dubai. She was not familiar with a fridge, washing machine, microwave or vacuum cleaner so all these things needed to be explained to her until she understood what they were used for and HOW they were used properly. Our maid stays with us 7 days a week but that's not to say she doesn't get any time off. She doesn't know anyone in Dubai , has not expressed interest in venturing out alone and wouldn't be able to deal with taxi drivers, etc. She is quite naive and simple. Instead we always include her in our family outings, be it going out for dinner, movies, swimming, visiting family, etc. I give her clothes and toiletries too and she makes international calls from my phone. She watches telly with us and comes power-walking with me when she feels like it. I know that AED 500 is very low but that is what the agency advised us and because we werent sure 'what we were getting' so to speak we chose to stick to the standard rate! We didn't get to interview or 'select' her. However having said that, she will be getting yearly increments to bump up her salary because so far I feel she definitely deserves it even though it was quite hard in the beginning.

Exile, have you thought of getting a driving license? I really think you do need one in Dubai especially when you have kids..it would give you more flexibility and you would be able to attend coffee mornings, play date drop-offs and all this can possible help you get some much-needed adult time! Its great that the girls are starting school in October that will definitely be a huge help as you will have your mornings to yourself and i suppose DH will be doing the school run since you don't drive or will they be taking the bus? Whatever the case, you will get a few precious hours to relax at home and do the house work at your own pace. I am sure you will also find that the twins will be knackered when they come back from school so hopefully earlier bed times and solid sleep! When my DS was three I had to wean him off the milk because like yours he was waking up all night saying he was 'thirsty' and wanted milk. I started by stopping the milk altogether and just giving him small sips of water and asking him to go right back to bed..and BELIEVE IT OR NOT, after a few times of doing this he stopped waking up altogether! Honestly it was much easier than I thought I just had to find the strength to stay NO the first time...which for me was very hard because I kept on thinking ' how can he sleep if he's thirsty'...but he wasn't really..the lil monster!

I think it depends on experience as well as nationality unfortunately. For example, when we got our Ethiopian maid from the agency, they told us the standard monthly salary was AED 500. This is lower than what Filipino's get from what I understand. Our maid had never been on a plane before and didn't speak a word of English or Arabic. She is actually illiterate so we couldn't even get her an Ethiopian/English dictionary as she couldn't read or write in her own language. Its been a year now though and she has learned some English and is actually really lovely.

You need to sit your DH down and have a heart-to-heart with him. Some men dont realise how draining it is to take care of children (PLUS housework) all day! And if you have no extended family in Dubai it is even more difficult/lonely. If he wants more attention or time with you, then he should do something to offload the burden so you can have some 'me' time which will help you have more energy for him once he comes home. Going off for iftars and leaving you with the kids is not fair on you and a bit selfish of him if I may say so! You're a human being too - give him a good talking to is what I say! No need to shout or get emotional - just be factual and very clear about exactly what support you need from him. If you dont do this, you stand the chance of 'burning out' very soon. Good luck, my dear! Sending you hugs. edited by Ayda247 on 16/08/2011
