As Basil has already said it really depends on what passport you hold. If you have a UK passport then yes you can. There is a list of countries who can get visa on arrival and if you have one of those that you will be fine.

It can be done and it is not as difficult as you think. Most banks, will have a power of attorney. I have power of attorney on my boss's personal bank accounts. I can sign cheques and speak to the banks in question direct. You need to go into the bank together. It's normally a couple of signatures and takes about 3 or 4 working days to take effect. I've done this with RAK Bank and HSBC.

Depends where you are.... There are lots of apartments that have walkways/greenery round them so you can take kids out on their bikes etc/sit on the grass. Like Motorcity!

I am assuming he will be on a company visa. Fees depend on which Emirate. For example a 3 year RAK residency visa will set you back 5100AED which includes finger printing and medical, 2 years is 4100 and they also do a one year visa which I actually don't know the cost of. If you budget around 5000AED you won't be far wrong.

I would say you would have to pay for her ticket. With her husband here in Dubai she is more likely to get pregnant than not. I do believe half of them don't believe in contraceptives. Even if you do meet her husband you will get an idea of what she is like but in reality its only when they start working for you that problems arise. Personally and erring on the side of caution I wouldn't bring her over. Better still ask her husband to bring her over on a visit visa. That way she is not your responsibility from the off.

As someone has already mentioned if it is in the company name then you fine looking. If the property is in DH's name, he will need a letter from his company stating that his visa is in process.

There is no definitive answer to this question. If you do the Oman route there is in theory 10 days grace period but its not a written rule. Over stay is 100AED per day.

Hate to say it but this is Dubai they do whatever they want. I think that is just slightly cheaper than Blossom. At least at Blossom they provide snacks and lunch included in the price.

I don't think you do at the beginning. It comes with experience. I've been played once and got lucky the second time! You could always put her on a week's trial. Maybe you should ask her previous sponsors why they won't put her wages up? edited by Babyrat on 09/05/2011

I really like the Observatory Brunch. It doesn't have the buzz of some of the other brunches but it could possibly have the most amazing views which go with a brunch. Also, nothing for the kids to do either but see you are not taking any!

Happy Mother's day to you too! Forumlady34, Many thanks for your reply. Do you actually have a telephone number that someone actually answers to from any of the organisations you have listed below in Dubai? I've been trying to contact the Consulate for the past couple of days even the operator doesn't answer. I have the telephone number from POLO either no one answers or its constantly engaged. If the domestic helper needs help from her consulate does she have a different number to call on?

I'm just doing some research and was wondering if anyone would be able to take the time and ask their housemaids a couple of questions. 1. On arrival into the UAE are they given any information or contact numbers to the Filipino Consulate ? 2. If they had an emergency would they know who to call at the consulate ? 3. Does a consulate member check up on them shortly after they arrive into the UAE ? 4. What services does the Filipino consulate offer them in Dubai? Please either post your answers here or email them to me on [email protected]. Many thanks for your time.

On Saturday 7th May the Bonnington Hotel which is in JLT is holding its first birthday party in the Garden at McGettigan. There is complimetary food and drinks, make your own cookie/cupcake station, bouncy castle, face painting, magician. It starts at noon and finishes at 5pm. This sounds great, do you have to pay to get in? Where is it advertised? DD got a flyer in her school bag today about it. Yes it is free.

I travelled with Qatar last month to Gatwick. Plane was delayed from Dubai to Doha so when I got to Doha they actually told me to run! I had a very horrible feeling that my luggage wouldn't make it cause the plane took off about 15 minutes after I sat down. When I landed at Gatwick they told they called about 5 names out mine being one of them saying that our luggage didn't arrive and go to a desk and get a form. I didn't receive my luggage for 2 days! I didn't even get an apology out of them. As regards compensation forget it! I sent an email off complaining. On my return I was slightly over my 23kg I was about 26kg and they wanted to charge me for it 69 pounds. When I explained to the check in lady that the overweight was because I had to buy clothes etc for 2 days she said she would speak to her supervisor and his reply was its not my problem its another department that I have to complain to. Never ever again will I travel with Qatar.

Pack and Move reasonable. They only thing I would say about them is that they insist you always put a deposit down before they leave even if it is only 500AED. So call them last when looking for a quote.

DH came back last week but I still eat with DD now and leave DH's on the side so I never know what time he is coming home.

I know of an agency based in Larnaca called AAS employment. The guys name there is Christos. His email address is [email protected]. He is helping my friend's maid with their visa process. He also supplies nannies/housemaids etc. Give him a try and he may be able to point your friend in the right direction.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice on this, though I'm still a bit worried that it will get noticed when we try and extend the visit visa. Any advice on where/how is the easiest way to do this without driving to Oman? The easiest way is to go to DNRD. There is one in the DNATA building on SZR. Its around 700AED in total for another 30 days. The charge is actually 600AED but what they fail to tell you is that you have to take out heath insurance as well. I did this for my mother last year and she had her own health insurance but for them to stamp the passport we had to pay all fees due.

Hi Treacle, from one mother to another it is seriously best to leave them well alone. DD was 2 when she first had them they must have lasted about 6 months. I made the mistake of getting one of the spots "frozen" like they do with warts. Biggest mistake of my life. She didn't have many spots only about 6 or 7. I took her back to her regular doctor and they said basically the same as nspree, do nothing. When the spot looks like it is about to burst I use to be antispectic cream on them and thats about it. She now has a little scar where the first doctor froze the spot but the others went away without scaring. Also, make sure you keep LO's nails short as they do itch and its the pus thats the infectious bit.

There is the British fish and chip shop on Jumeirah Beach Rd between Al Manara and Al Thaniya. I also hear there is an excellent chippie in Motor City. The one in Motorcity is called London Fish and Chips. It is nice not as nice as home but nicer than most I've tried out here.

Not to put a damper on things but here in Dubai FS1 and FS2 spaces are in real demand. You might have to wait until after May to find out as most places will have been offered out by now and those who do not put a deposit down to secure their place they then open up the waiting list. As Jwal mentioned they need to be assessed before being offered a place. You really just need to keep badgering them every week. I know several families including my own sister who has left Dubai in the past week unfortunately her kids wasn't at any of the schools that you have just mentioned. Sit tight and keep ringing.

Green Community Motorcity. It's lovely and has lots of nice little shops etc. The only downside I would say for Motorcity is the Emicool bills its quite expensive. I have a three bed and the standing charge is just over 500AED per month whether I use it or not!

The best nanny in the world is...........mother. Or...a well trained person who knows what to feed a child and everything from taking a temp to calling for emergency (big list but you know what I mean) a maid, cleans the house and unless she has actually raised her own children in a relatively modern society she will not know how to feed your child but might feed her child plain yogurt. Most of the time you THINK they understand, but they dont but are afraid to admit it. Assume they don't understand and figure out a way to help. Find someone who does speak their language and english and have them write instructions down in the maids language...that should help. Second of all, clean with them until you are sure they know what you want. Showing and doing go alot further than telling and assuming. A blacklist. hmmmm. so Hessy does not do things the way you want them, breaks a few things and throws them out? a little petty theft maybe....you better have a checklist in order to blacklist a maid and tick all the boxes before you ruin someones reputation. Best Thing? Hire an agency maid to clean and be your own nanny. Well said.

Have you tried www.backtobasicsuae.com. Maids load their CV's on there and some even have the odd picture. Personally if mine left now I would only take one who had never worked in Dubai before. I saw their CVs, almost all of them are asking to be paid between 2,000 and 3,000 dirhams. Several don't want to take care of children. A lot want to live in a villa. Almost all of them want to work only for western families. KB75, it was only a suggestion just because it doesn't suit you doesn't mean it won't be good for someone else. Not everyone wants a housemaid to look after kids. It's their CV and its your choice whether you want to interview them. If you look at the classified section most of the maids/nannies there actually specify that they only want to work for western families. This is Dubai people put down what they want. When I was interviewing before I wish I had sight of their CV that way it would have saved me alot of wasted time with certain people.

I found my nanny through the classified section on here but you could also try www.backtobasicsuae.com or even www.dubizzle.com for home help. I suggest when you arrive just line up a loads of interviews. I literally interviewed about 10, some will turn up and some won't. The good thing about backtobasics is that nanny/maid/helper's cv is on their website.
