Doctor gave me antibiotics as said with dust and so many people arriving from all over the world is better to treat chest infections. Also gave me cough medicine, nasal spray and a decongestant. Joys of private medical!!!! Very efficient! Only waited 5 minutes. X

I think they have recently change the system at Al Ahli and you now need an appointment. There is now one number for appointments (that i don't have with me as on my desk at work) which you call for all departments. I was recommended by our work hospital expert to always take the first or the last appointment to avoid a long wait and to be pretty assertive! I'm going tomorrow for cough/chest infection to a female GP (who is Serbian I think, who a colleague recommended). She is in the internal medicine department. Al Ahli is pretty close to West Bay but don't know anywhere closer - for my medical insurance Al Ahli is easier as just show my insurance card rather than having to claim back.

Hello! You might have already found somewhere by now, but try the Al Jazi compounds in Gharraffa - they are pretty near DESS and al jazi 2 is brand new with fabulous facilities and villas the size you're looking for. We are on one of the compounds near Burger King roundabout and LOVE the location, but despite being half full our landlord won't let out anymore villas in our compound. There are several compounds either side of Arab League nations street between burger king and Dahl Al Hallam (??) roundabout - by the childrens park so worth driving round. I'm slightly biased as husband in real estate but if newwould recommend using an agent or 2 to show you stuff in the specific area you're looking in - can remove stress and you might be able to recharge the agents fees as part of your relocation deal!!!! xxx

We really liked Al Fardan 3 and 4, which are both very near to Park House in Abu Hamour. Think 16k per month unfurnished/18k furnished. We ended up choosing DESS, so live the other end of town now. B

Hello! I think Dan Lou's suggestion is great and simillar to what we've sorted out. We've been really lucky and found a fabulous English teacher/qualified childminder who collects our daughter from nursery 3 days a week and looks after her until 4pm. We met her through Dohamums.... We are in the process of finding a live in nanny/maid, but we'll still keep my daughter with our childminder as it is such a great arrangement and I'm happy having my daughter with another family and with someone who's had great experience too. As well as the note at school, you could post on Dohamums and see if there are any stay at home mums, ex teachers etc who would like some additional money and help you out. We came with my job, so my husband didn't start working for first month or so, so he could settle us properly because is pretty full on with 2 new jobs, new schools, houses etc so if you can stagger your start dates it might help. xxx

There are loads available after exxon moved out -apparently landlord looking for another corporate but is filling up with non - corporate tenants. The villas are all the same and are described as 3 beds plus an upstairs office - we use this as a 4th bedroom as same size and they've put a bed in for us - 2 ensuite baths upstairs and a family bathroom. There is a tiny maid's room and shower room off the kitchen, but we use this as a utility room I think the kitchen is the only let down as a bit tired.

Ok - my DH's directions from BK roundabout! If you're coming towards BK roundabout, down khalifa street, go right at roundabout (down arab league street) towards markhiya st and take and then it is the first proper right off that road. Take the immediate left - 10metres immediate sharp left and go to end of that road. Turn left, round bend and entrance on left. It is 2 mins from starfish lane 1 and by al markhiya gardens compond. Happy to show you round ours (altho' a bit bare as our stuff still at customs!). B x

Hello! Have now been at Al-Malki for a couple of weeks, so wanted to update this thread as worried it might put off people from moving to what I think is a lovely compound. Great location for starfish 1, DESS and landmark. Exxon were here and have now moved out so only 10 of the 50 villas are occupied, altho filling up and think another corporate coming. It's a small, well maintained compound with good facilities - big pool, shady playground for little ones, tennis and squash court. Definitely kind of compound where kids can scoot and ride bikes around safely - just needs a few more kids for my toddler to hang out with!! Maintenance could not be more responsive and friendly. If anyone wants more info happy to speak. B x

Just to add my experience, which so far pretty smooth - but think company doing a lot in background! I went from job offer to starting work in 12 weeks - could have been quicker but 40 days in UK to get your police clearance that then has to be attested. It was 10 days from be submitting all my attested documents to getting work visa. I then started work 4th Jan and got RP on Monday this week - but did medical stuff on my first day, finger printing a few days later and was then summoned back to have fingerprints redone on sunday. Company starting process for me to sponsor husband and daughter.... And am slightly scared by post below.... HTH X

Hello everyone, Hope ok for me to join on thread as have a 2 year old arrived a week ago in Doha. We did go for a compound as my little girl is very active and wanted to be able to play outside and chose gharrafa/markhiya as near to DESS and my work - also v near lovely kids playground and we move in tomorrow. We looked at a few nurseries when we came in nov for a look round - we loved the starfish lane set up but long waiting lists for the 2 existing ones - so were really pleased that there is a starfish lane opening early feb and still has places, so we got a place there (altho is al waab, so we will a few months of a commute) - there's an open day 25th jan. Would be great to meet up with the 2 year olds when you guys get out here. Becky xx Ps - our stuff is being shipped as we speak through crown.... We went fully furnished and left our furniture at home, so now worried about bed being uncomfortable!! We decided not to ship all in case at end of probation we get sent home or we totally hate it!!! A week in and we're so pleased about our decision to come but do know is v early days!!!! edited by Becster on 11/01/2012

Hello! I'm brand new to Doha so please don't rely on this!! I think Al Malki is new - we looked at lots of the villas on the compound and none had been lived in. - we really loved it. We chatted to one of the residents who said no problem with noise at any time of day - and certainly no big construction noise like some we'd visited! We're planning to rent here and move in in a week as location is perfect for us - near DESS and my office and we liked the feel of it. I might well be posting here soon that this was a bad decision!! Let me know if you'd like any more info after we've moved in. Xx

Hello! We're moving out in January and I have similar questions about finding a nanny, but I've never seen anyone answer a nanny/maid question on this forum. I'm not sure why. Will continue to investigate and will let you know if I find anything useful out!!!! Becky

Thanks so much for the replies already, and budget looks right. Thanks too for the warning about the school. edited by Becster on 27/10/2011
