Beebers: Thank you. I just started going back to the gym, I don't get that hungry sometimes because when I'm running around I tend to forget to eat at times but when I have nothing to do I munch and munch out of boredom. My activity level is pretty high, it's my eating I need to get into check. On that note, Is the movie popcorn here really that bad? :big grin: I get the caramel/cheddar. Okay, well there you go, your eating patterns are not consistent, so your hunger will not be consistent either. Since you just started going back to the gym, your body may not have "picked up on" that activity level increase to the point where your hunger is increasing due to an increased metabolism. I don't mean this in a rude way at all: running around and being busy, doing household chores, these things don't always equal a high activity level that would cause metabolic increase the way purposeful and focused training will. (unless you were so busy you never, ever ate much, then obviously you would lose fat). Might I suggest doing a 3 meal-a-day plan (that you can stick to even on your busy days) and have things around the house that are "forgiving" for the days when you are subject to eat out of boredom? Whatever is in my house, I am subject to eating, so I keep carrots, pickles, apples and grapes on hand for the times when I just need to keep my mouth occupied-- or I wake up in the middle of the night and need something. Can't do much damage with those, and you won't eat what you don't buy and stock. As far as a food being "bad," I no longer classify foods as inherently good or bad (Unless you have health concerns to the point where it behooves you to avoid certain foods). This is just my opinion, but it works for me and just about everyone else I know. I believe you can eat what you want as long as protein makes up about 40% of your daily caloric intake, and you do not exceed the daily calories necessary for you to be in a deficit. So on the days where I want to eat something like that, I do one of two things. 1) Plug it into myfitnesspal app and track it (I guess at the serving size) keeping my numbers for the day intact, although I may be hungry as movie popcorn is not necessarily satisfying and a lot of "empty calories." 2) I eat something like that on a "free day" and don't count a thing. The second option is usually easier for me :) Disclaimer: I am not suggesting that eating movie theater popcorn everyday, or junk food in general, is "healthy." But then again, who does that? <em>edited by Beebers on 29/11/2014</em>

Beebers, you're so knowledgable :) come train us Ewers. I've been told that i need to eat 5/6 times a day but i don't get that hungry to eat all the time, I prefer 3. Is that harming me or hindering my weight loss efforts? InWhySee, I stand convinced that the number of meals per day does not matter, and this is from experiments with my own daily meal schedule and what the science shows. When IT (intermittent fasting) became all the rage, there were sophisticated studies conducted to determine if this method was truly superior to eating multiple meals per day. Both the camp of 5-6 meals a day and the IT camp believed their method boosted metabolism and sped up fat loss more. Well, your metabolism spikes after each meal, yes, as the 5-6 meal camp suggests. However, the spikes of increase are smaller. Whereas, the IT camp (eating 2x a day 6-12 hours apart is one way of IT) had greater metabolic spikes after eating, but also lower decreases in metabolism between meals. So no... it does not matter as it evens out. I think the most important thing is devising a strategy that is conducive to your lifestyle. Not everyone can travel around with 5 meals, store them properly, and have the break time to eat--or like you--they are simply not hungry that often. So something you cannot stick with can't work! Some would tell you to eat more, and you will eventually develop more of an appetite. This can be true; your lack of hunger could be a sign of a slagging metabolism. However, it could also mean you don't have a high activity level. (look into that :) )But for now, just make sure your meals are balanced. Try to have the majority of the meal protein and carbs, with fat being the lowest %. And the number at the end of the day, the caloric total, is where it's at.

No I've never been able to be here whilst she's cleaned... Because we're in such small surroundings, I'd feel a bit awkward about just sitting there whilst she cleaned around me :-/ Is it that silly? Should I be that bothered? Some people feel awkward; if I recall there was a thread on here dedicated that topic. My DH was here the first time to point out a few specific things, but otherwise, we just nip out when she comes to stay out of the way. The service we use is Dubai Housekeeping and we are really pleased with the work as well as the management.

I purchased some chenille yarn from Daiso for a 10mm hook to make a beret and scarf, but I wasn't blown away by the variety in color choices for yarn for a 6-7mm hook for an afghan. I went to Craftland based on some suggestions here...my goodness! 70 dhs for a skein? I think I will buy myself a new laptop rather than crochet a new afghan with those prices--it would work out better. I also saw McGrudy's in Jumeirah suggested but my GPS failed me on that trip. I'm considering ordering some Lion Brand or Red Heart from the US and SNS'ing it.

[b'>My one question in this situation would be, 'do you know where the rest of his salary is going'[/b'> Perhaps he's just being cautious until he's sure everything is working out ok.[b'> I did pretty much the same as you when I came out here, but until we found our feet, I was quite happy to give up on a lot of things until we were more stable.[/b'> Do you actually know what the household finances and spending add up to? My exact thoughts on both points. Hard to really comment on specifics, as we don't know any details pertaining to how much the OP's DH is putting back each month, or spending on his own incidentals. One one hand, if he is spending 10000 dhs a month on whatnots and handing her 1000, then this is a different ball of wax. On the other hand, he might be a general tightwad, clueless as to how far 1000 dhs goes, or he may have good reasons for wanting to keep the disposable spending at a bare minimum at the moment. Marriage is a partnership no matter who is working, but spending money isn't the only thing that should be shared; sacrifices should also be shared, no? When I wasn't working after first arriving to UAE, DH would give me an allowance, but the amount was decided upon by having a discussion. I didn't see it as an insult because I left my career. Our decision to move was mutual, we have a goal, and budgeting will always be a part of that. When I would get frustrated, I would focus instead on what we were trying to accomplish rather than focus on what I was doing without. It takes emotional maturity and practice. Sounds like OP and her DH need to revisit their goals and approach. That said, I would hope the OP has access to her DH's account(s) for emergencies.

Thank goodness someone raised this. I have always noticed how condescending some native English speakers can be towards non-native ones. They should feel humble and happy that their language is a global business tool and knowing it is seen, always, as an advantage. In every country they may travel to, no matter how much some governments may promote the use of their national language, there will always be someone with whom they can speak without ever having to learn the local language themselves. People are always eager to converse in English and for many it is the difference between that or unemployment. Instead they mock and snigger at the variations that foreigners have come up with in their bid to speak a semblance of English, forgetting that these people have a whole other culture, native tongue and accent to contend with. Cue snide remarks and put-downs, or rolling of eyes and moaning about how the great English language has been butchered. Try speaking a language other than your own, having to make a livelihood out of using it, and being made fun of for your earnest mistakes. But quite surely my solitary post wont change anything. Every once in a while there will be fun to be had at the expense of good names and backsides and pointing out the obvious is just spoiling the fun for everyone - no, the well-versed at least. I agree with you. It's hardly a secret that many native English speakers are not very tolerant of the way people speak English when it their second language...or how Americans speak :)

[b'>All the other posts are quite flippant[/b'> but excessive dreaming can be a sign of anything from pregnancy to a brain tumour. I'd want to know when you first noticed your excessive dreaming, has it gotten worse and if you have any other strange symptoms. All, then? OP asked if anyone else had the same thing, or if it was rare. Since I've experienced this from the time I was a young child, I've talked to plenty of people about it over the years and even had done a research paper on the topic. A lot of people experience this for no other reason than they simply just do.

I've noticed with people in our family that the hotter they are, the more they dream. Try making your room colder at night for a few nights and see if you dream less! I set my thermostat on 18 and it is never cold enough! I prefer an arctic bedroom but something is wrong with our A/C because my side of the bed is always too warm for me. Maybe it needs servicing and thanks for the reminder. I wonder if that would help

Maybe the PCOS is a function of being overweight and she wants a professional to guide her how to do this, taking into consideration certain foods that exacerbate the condition which should be avoided. Sorry OP, I can't help with a nutritionist but if you search on here you can find recommendations. The people I know that have overcome PCOS were told by their GP's to eat a well balanced, varied diet in a normal calorie range and exercise. It worked for them.

Same here, Gritt. It's not that uncommon from what I have read on the internet. Almost every night it is the same thing. Go to bed at 9ish, wake up from a dream between 11:30-1am. Go back to sleep. Wake up in the morning dreaming, too. Some mornings I wake up exhausted. The only time I don't experience this is if I drink alcohol, or stay up really late, but I don't exactly wake up feeling stellar the morning after I do.

Ladies, I've had eczema for a year and have been taking Elocom for it. But it goes away a bit and comes back again. Any suggestions as to what better medication I can take to absolutely get rid of it? Which form of eczema is it? I have discoid, or nimular eczema from time to time, on my legs and arms. If you have similar, what I did may work for you. It was so bad at one point that the itching and discomfort would keep me awake at night. I hadn't had eczema in 30 years so, I booked an appointment with a dermatologist here wondering what it was. He diagnosed me, and told me simply to take Atarax at night when the itching was bad, and to apply dermovate cream or ointment to the patches of eczema at night. These two things gave me instant relief, and all symptoms of eczema seemed to disappear within a few days-- and I was literally covered in it. I prefer to treat my recurrences in this way because it is effective, cheap, and keeps me from having to take a daily med. During a recurrence, I use no lotions other than the Dermovate to spot-treat. HTH

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you are saying, however we do not plan to do any visa run or extend for another 30 days. [b'>We simply need about 35 days instead of 30.[/b'> I've heard visa on arrival into Dubai Airport and exiting a few days after 30 but before 40 is ok - I just don't know how to get this information confirmed. I'm thinking to call Amer Service 4 times and take an average on responses? Then, the way to be sure is this. When your mother goes through and gets her entry stamp at the airport, have her ask the agent just how long she has, 30 or 40 days. If they tell her 30, then why not do a simple visa run to Hatta, Oman? It will cost 50 dhs for the Omani entry/exit and a maximum of 4 hours driving round trip. An extension would cost a LOT more than that, hundreds of dirhams. Mind you, if they tell her 30 days only at the airport, that 30 days starts when they stamp her. That counts as day 1 at that time. So to be safe, you may even want to do a visa run on the 29th day. If you are an hour late on the the 30th day she will gt an overstay fine of 200 dhs. I think it is 200 dhs fine the first overstay day, and 100 dhs fine for each additional.

I would feel comfortable going. Have you checked for recent reviews on tripadvisor? If you book through an agency like Socotra Eco Tours, which comes highly recommended on the site, I would think they would alert you if it wasn't a good time but maybe that is my naivete. When we go, we would like to go direct from Sharjah to Socotra as opposed to going into San'aa. I am really not familiar with the airline, or its frequency of cancelled flights, but they offer Wed/Sat flights. So we haven't booked yet, because 3 days doesn't seem like enough time to cover all the spots and go out deep sea fishing for a few days. I would want 10 and it will be a while before I get 10 days straight to goof off :) As for danger of kidnapping, I would be more worried if I was traveling the Gulf of Aden in a large yacht rather than doing a camping trip. Socotra is quite isolated. Not to come across as blase, but driving on Sheikh Zayed Road can be quite dangerous, and yet I do that often. I try to keep that in mind when I worry about travel to "hot spots."

Dumond has some shoe styles that would fit you. I wear a 42 and sometimes go down to a 41 there. There is one above the Ice Rink in Dubai Mall. Average pricing is 280-400 dhs a pair. Vince Camuto is also similar price range and sizing. I am 5'9" and for work trousers, I find the length, quality, and pricing all to be great at Banana Republic. I think I paid 270 dhs for a pair of fully lined pinstripe pants and they have held up really well. Banana is also at Dubai Mall. I have bought some heels from New Look before, the quality was pretty low, but they do have a lot of larger sizes and I don't mind if they don't hold up terribly well if it is a trendy style anyway. But they do not always fit nicely in a 42 and up, and tend to run wide in the larger sizes, so the fit is not good. For 100-200 dhs though, that is to be expected.

ST90, after going back through your posts and reading between the lines, I think I have an idea what is going on. With women and weight loss there are a few classic scenarios, and I don't mean this in a condescending way. Whereas men seem to do better with sticking to a program and diet until they are told to change something, women tend to try and take on too much at once, analyze the whole process too much and want to change things up too much and too often. My theory is that you planned too aggressive of an attack to lose weight. Meaning, you cut your calories too low and added too much exercise from the start. You essentially trained your body to need 5 days of exercise and too few calories to lose fat. At first it works and you will lose some weight. Not only did this probably slow your metabolism down, but any "slips ups" and you will stop losing fat. No one is perfect all of the time. Just a guess, it looks like you are eating about 1200 calories a day. That is fine if you weigh 120 lbs. When I want to lose fat, I multiply my bodyweight in pounds by 10-12, and that is what I would recommend for almost anyone, with about 40% of those calories coming from protein. I think you have a diet that is setting you up to fail and it sounds more like punishment than nourishment. Maybe you don't order out or drink alcohol, but I suspect every few days you go overboard on your portions because your body must be starving. Regarding your exercise, it sounds like you do not have a specific plan and there is too much variance with no purpose. The idea is to create an effect on the body. Some cardio here, some weights here, and some full body exercises there is just hodge podge that may be getting your heart rate up and burning calories, but doing little else. Couple that with not eating enough calories or protein, and not sticking to something long enough before changing things up, and you are just spinning your wheels. Losing weight cannot be put in a neat equation like 90% diet 10% exercise. That is just not true if your workouts are not right for you. You need professional guidance, but further, you need to trust the process long enough to follow through even when you don't think it is working, or not happening fast enough for your desires. Edited to add: losing excess fat will greatly improve all of your health markers, and I would not be surprised if your vitamin absorption improved simply from losing fat. Fat is not just inactive tissue, it draws a lot from the body to maintain its existence and impedes other functions, especially hormonal passageways. <em>edited by Beebers on 17/11/2014</em>

You guys are really attacking her daily diet whereas the problem is clearly not that alone. And at the end of the day, it is a calories in versus calories out scenario. Your average person does not spike their insulin to the point of fat storage from eating a breakfast like the OP's. Let's get a grip. OP, if there is nothing wrong with your thyroid then it boils down to the fact that you need to push yourself more physically. Worry far less about how you eat and worry more about exercising regularly, consistently, and hard enough. It sucks to keep toeing the line when you aren't seeing results, and I understand wanting to research gastric bypass or band. However, all that is going to do is control your portion intake, and it does not sound like that is your problem. So in this case, opting for surgery may cause an irreversible scenario that still does not benefit you in the end. First course of action is work harder physically, have you developed a strategy for this, foremost? <em>edited by Beebers on 17/11/2014</em>

I suppose it depends how you define "alone?" If you are single and have friends here that celebrate, see what they are up to. If you are married and DH will be away, celebrate when he gets back or before he leaves. When I have spent Christmas truly alone, I usually play a Christmas music CD while I bake cookies in my pajamas most the day. Then, go to the mall and buy myself a present. A "want" thing, not a "need" thing. After Skyping with DH and family, I'll drink some egg nog and watch a Christmas themed movie of choice. My favorite is Love Actually and Frosty the Snowman. Whatever you do, don't treat it like it is no big deal if it IS a big day for you.

I reverse park too!!! I was always taught by my father to do this as you never know when you have to make a quick exit. If you ever go to a military barrack in the UK 99% of cars will be facing forward for exactly the same reason. I have to admit though, it does make me cross when people can't do it. that's hilarious--my father taught me the same thing! He also taught me never to pull up closely to someone at a stoplight, to give myself enough room to go around. I still do the latter if I feel I am in a shifty neighborhood, although no fears of being carjacked in Dubai :)

We got lucky in our rental. This January we will sign our 3rd lease and even with a 10% increase, we are still way below market. Hopefully that means we have another several years here; our LL seems to have no desire to kick good tenants out under the guise of "moving in" for higher rent. I am glad our previous LL pulled that, as that 1 bed flat is currently renting for the same price as our 2 bed now. I have become really happy with this location, and the flat itself, but one day I am sure I am in for a rude awakening!

Sounds like the supplier was right ;) I've certainly learned a lot from him!

Does anyone know if it's possible to do the renewal if you've already done a couple of visa runs? We're still waiting for my husband's visa... When I was staying in Abu Dhabi, I did a visa run to Oman prior to doing the extension. But that was in AD, it was 600 dhs, and that was 2010. I do not know if it is different. All I know for sure is it can only be done by extension one time.

 that's hilarious they are a nice group of team. i actually like working with them and I don't think they do it on purpose. but i can't handle it because i always feel weird, awkward and like i don't belong there. My colleagues are fab, actually, it's just the boss. And part of it, I am fairly sure, is that he doesn't like Westerners. He thinks only his own country people are competent, smart, etc. and often we are subject to monologues and diatribes on the topic. He tries to exclude the rest of us when he can because he thinks we are imbeciles. I actually heard him through our (paper thin!) adjoining wall tell a fellow employee that you can't trust white expats to work hard, and few of us have masters degrees or PhDs and our only skill is speaking English, so hiring us for "too much" salary is a necessary evil. Talk about a wide brush to paint with. What a chip!

All roads round the Marina & JBR closed between 5pm & 7pm http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/traffic-transport/dubai-tram-marina-and-jbr-closed-for-inauguration-1.1410955 Hmmm....just got home from walking the gamut, and cars are traveling on the road parallel to the tram in the JBR/Al Fattan area. That's my 6:30 report! However, pedestrians can only cross at major signals this evening, not at those minor crosswalks in between. AM--I know, that would be really cool :)

i hate it when they do that. they call me in for a meeting and they are all speaking their native language. i usually stand up and leave without saying a word. i still do it and i told them a million times what's the point of me being there if i can't understand you. they apologise but they still do it. Wow, they apologize? I have come to just ignore it, but when it bothers me on the wrong day, I string together a sentence of the few words I know in their language, like "What has happened? Do you want bread? I am strong" :) That usually does it! :) Seriously sometimes I feel like I was hired just to be the proofreader or the dictionary. My boss forwarded me an email once, asking "What does this mean? IS this bad??" The supplier called him a D-bag. I was dying!!!! <em>edited by Beebers on 11/11/2014</em>

My mother has been on a morbid streak since I was young, letting me know that each of us siblings will get an equal inheritance when they pass on. They have literally thought of every detail. I try to lighten things up, like asking that my Mom leave all her junk to my sister, as I don't want to rummage through 50 years' worth of antique collecting. Always gets a chuckle, but she insists how serious this is to them. I'm sure it is because of a major inheritance feud that occurred when one of my grandparents passed. Too personal to entail here, but what occurred was downright disgusting. Anyway, whatever they want to do is their choice, and they take comfort in doing things this way and dispersing their lives' work equally. If I had children, which I don't and won't, it would be a tough call if one of my children was a compulsive gambler, for example. I would hate to enable that. But it's kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't? If you have children of equal success, splitting things equally should cause no drama. If they don't have equal success, and you split equally/non-equally, someone might still have resentment. I wonder sometimes if this is why people leave everything to a charity of their choosing.
