Welp, it's going to be an annoying stint for you in the UAE if you don't learn to not let it bother you so much. I have never been bothered by my colleagues' English being subpar. Most of them speak 2-4 languages which is rather impressive! What does irritate me is when my boss speaks in his native tongue, which I don't understand, in meetings or when he is addressing the whole office. It makes some of my colleagues uncomfortable, too, and further--they want to hone their English skills.

Alismum- I haven't been down to that area for a couple of weeks. Wonder if the market will be open stalls, like they used to have on the corner near Boutique 1/Murjan, or the area by the 6 Emaar towers on Marina Walk?

I am SO happy that the marina is no longer inhospitable to pedestrians or even runners. Some days, the streets are just downright quiet! I have my balcony door open and can't hear a peep at the moment, aside from the construction on Crystal Towers. I don't know that I will use the tram much, but certainly will do it once for the novelty :) it is kind of exciting ETA: I just looked at the route map--yes--will definitely be using it to get to Marina Mall in the really hot months! <em>edited by Beebers on 11/11/2014</em>

Hi Zizia, I have had the Brazilian Cacau brand of keratin straightening twice this year. I like my wavy hair, but with the weather here, and previous color treatments I had done, it was too high maintenance. I was either straightening it, or manipulating it with several products to give it a frizz free wave. That said, I loved the first treatment. My hair was straw-straight for the first 3 shampoos. I could blow it dry in less then 10 minutes, just using my fingers. What was awesome was the fact that I had almost zero hair fall after the treatment, rather than having a comb or brush full of hair. For about 8 weeks, I had zero frizz although my waves came back. I raved about it on this forum. Then, 12 weeks later, when it was frizzy again, I went in for a second treatment. Nothing about the process seemed different to me. If anything, the salon owner performed the process with a much lighter hand with the straightening iron. When she went to blow dry it, I noticed my hair seemed to have a gummy texture. It was tangling a bit as she dried it. I thought it smelled funny, but it always smells of strong chemicals during the process at the salon. When I shampooed it myself 2 days later, the smell was overwhelming. Somewhere between wet dog and perm solution. In fact every time I washed it, it stunk. The aesthetic results were about the same after the second treatment, but I also noticed breakage and flyaways, about an inch off my scalp. This really ticked me off, as my hair has been recovering from breakage due to coloring and I had it in a really good place. Hair fall also increased. I went back to the salon and asked the owner if I should be concerned that my hair fall had quadrupled. She said it is normal in September/October as these months are "worst for hair fall." I am now 12 weeks post second treatment, and won't be doing it again. I have friends that get Brazilian straightening 4-5 times a year, even the versions full of formaldehyde and have no issues. Lucky me! I don't know if it was a bad batch, a bad application, left on too long, or what. I have read here and there on the internet that other women have a great experience the first time, but after the subsequent treatment they experience what I did because there is already a buildup of keratin on the hair which weighs it down and causes it to break. Other members of this forum have recommended a treatment called Kerastraight. Don't quote me, but I seem to remember this is formaldehyde free and gentler. Long post, but hope it helps.

Hi Precious Gem, Again try Addicted to Soaps, their products are all organic and they stock a lot more than what you see on the Website. Or you can try the Organics Food Cafe on SZR near Oasis Centre. Hope this helps ... edited by DubaiDee4c on 10/11/2014 By the way, I am cracking out on the Addicted to Soaps website lol, thanks!!

At a very nice hotel **farted** in my car before he gave it to me last night. The smell was so offensive I could still smell it when I got home last night! If it wasn't so late I would have turned the car around and said something. Should I mention it to the hotel? What would you have done? I would probably be too mortified to say something on the spot but I would linger and avoid getting in the car. Or...if I had too many drinks at the hotel, ask "Dude, did you seriously just fart in my car?? Who does that??" :) Seriously, I think anyone who works in the hospitality management sector would want to know if that happened to a patron. Doubt anyone would lose their job over it.

But it's so much easier to play the discrimination card than to actaully think you may be the issue. Not a day goes by in the American news without stories of "discrimination" playing a hand in termination or not being hired when the individual themselves was the issue. Using American news as an example because in the US you can barely ask people what their gender is in an interview without facing a potential lawsuit.

Newsflash: it is not just Dubai that discriminates, or whatever you want to call it. Every place discriminates. It's just that in some countries it is illegal to be upfront about it! Agree there are some real creeper ads in the paper. Well I am sure those countries who have made it illegal did so for a reason. [b'>I don't know what you call it, but to me it is discrimination and very blatant.[/b'> Maybe when there is a law against it then those creeper ads can be done away with . I would not call every instance of preference expressed openly by an employer here discrimination. There are many facets. Regarding looks and submitting photos: Some companies want a certain "look" in order to maintain brand continuity. You see this a lot in front office and sales staff positions. Superficial, yes. Discriminatory? IMO, not necessarily. In other cases where employers specify nationality, sometimes a specific nationality or native speaker of a certain language is the best fit, if not necessary for the position. This has nothing to do with discrimination.

I can empathize with almost everyone's point of view on this thread. Especially Guinness, as I grew up with complete neatnick parents. I would write a novel if I included everything, but I was criticized for leaving fingerprints on lightswitch panels, stepping directly onto a bathmat with wet feet...as a young child. At the age of 21 I didn't even know how to do basic cooking or baking because such things made a mess and my Mom wasn't having it. My DH grew up with housekeepers coming in 3 times a week. Who is the neater one in our home? I would say he is. He was taught to respect and value his things, which I feel is the bottom line. This could be a function of having to work for your things and learn to appreciate them. In Dubai, if it costs us less than 100 dirhams to come in and deep clean our flat every week, why on earth wouldn't we! We both work and I'd rather delegate it. I get satisfaction from cleaning my house, yes, but I also get satisfaction out of working and working out everyday, and spending quality time with my husband. Cleaning still needs to be done daily but that once a week really helps. If I had kids, we would triple the cleaning. End of. There should be no judgments here. If you love cleaning, gold star for you. If you pay for a service you can afford that provides you a different kind of value, go for it.

Regarding de-chloronating water, or getting rid of DBPs, I've read conflicting information. Some say water simply needs to be boiled, some say to boil for 20 minutes. Who boils water for 20 minutes when cooking or making tea/coffee?? I've simply decided that unless I have a condition or health concern which merits looking into it further, it is not worth worrying about. So for cooking rice, or boiling eggs, I boil tap water in my electronic kettle first. For drinking water, I like Arwa.

Can't help with Dragon Mart, but for reference, we had 7 panels of blackout curtains custom made. The pattern we selected was solid color, satin stripes-- not very complex but a very nice material. 4 of these panels were floor to ceiling length, and 3 panels were half length. Estimate was free. Total for 7 panels including installation was 2700 dhs. That is about 385 dhs per curtain panel...so what you are describing sounds expensive.

...but more importantly...why are you FB friends with your maid?! Lol! Nope - I'm not FB friends with her but I very occasionally check on her public profile.. and this was uploaded while I was on holiday.. I am actually FB friends with my ex maid but I must say that I don't like it when she posts pictures of the children that she is looking after.. I won't want my children's pictures on anyone's FB page.. ^^ yeah, this. The reason(s) why this would bother most parents is probably something the maid can't even conceptualize. In her mind, she is likely just sharing her work and the children she adores. This is why you need to have these kind of conversations with staff that come from cultures where oversharing on social media is the norm. I've learned you can't take it for granted that someone operates on a similar bandwidth to you beyond basic respect.

As for maintenance, I would be careful with asking the watchmen or building staff who to use. If they give you some guy's name and mobile #, you have no guarantee of who exactly is coming in your home. Further, if they break something or fix something improperly, you have no recourse. I have had my share of drama with that. Definitely pay the money and call someone like Jim will Fix It or Musthavemaintenance, as sarahlou said, if you are inviting someone into your home as a single woman.

When I first read this, my initial thought was why would you care if she was posting a sexy picture of herself on facebook...or what she is posting on facebook for that matter? Isn't that what most people do on facebook? Look at me, don't I look nice, or look at me and where I am? I don't know that I would want to be friends with my maid on facebook; when I had an account I didn't even friend co-workers. But on second thought, I am a very private person. I wouldn't want someone posting pictures of my home on facebook, or god forbid-- checking in, announcing my exact address to cyberworld. I've had a guest do that and I was ticked off. A friend of mine in another country actually fired his houseboy for taking photos of his entire house and contents and posting them on facebook, which I feel was justified, as they had a strict understanding of this, and theft/home invasions was a real threat for him. If this is your worry, a privacy issue, let her know what your expectations are.

Within 4 months of moving to UAE I gained a stone. No mystery here, either, I know exactly why. Overall, the biggest factor for me was that DH and I were newlyweds, and we were kind of in "vacation mode" when we first moved here. I was not working at first, we did a lot of wining and dining, and leisure. Once I gained 20 lbs, it was a big wake up call that this is not vacation, this is my life, so I needed to create a core regimen that would compliment the way I wanted to look and feel. I can't lean on the heat or the food offerings here as an excuse, I came from a similar climate and as we know, American food, well. Once I lost the weight, to keep fit, my solution was 1. Create a strong exercise regimen and schedule, which is a centerpiece of my life as it was before. Pay whatever I have to in order to really enjoy my workout experience. 2. Say "no" a lot more than "yes" to social invites centered around food or alcohol, and choose friends with similar interests like keeping fit 3. Stick to a nutrition plan and don't indulge on school nights. If I have a business dinner during the week, I just skip the wine and order chicken and veggies. When it's nice out, I almost never order groceries or water, I take the walk myself.

Ummuhammed, hopefully now you can just put this behind you and there won't be too much of a ripple effect if the man is still to be employed by your husband. Sometimes we just fall into these situations. Seems like a good idea, you try to do the hospitable thing, and it backfires. I don't want to go into a grand amount of detail, but we ended up hosting a business associate of my husband for what was nearly a month. A month.....!! My friends were like, how could you let that happen?? They didn't understand I was stuck. DH and I laugh about it now, and he has promised me to ask "the right questions" beforehand when we are posed in a similar situation in the future-- because you can never take for granted even the most elementary things. You don't expect to have to say "Hi, can you not use my hairbrush?" or "we flush the toilets in this house" or "could you not go through my drawers and wear my jewelry? thanks." I am not saying it is a laughing matter due to the nature of the children involved, but best to move on and not wrack your brain as to why you couldn't see eye to eye, or what you did wrong. Sounds like you are a saint and hopefully your DH shows his appreciation for you being such a trooper.

The 3 week frustration--eek :) Just stay the.course, there is probably nothing wrong at all! I will wager your body is adjusting to the new caloric monitoring and steady exercise, and "figuring out" what to do with the energy intake vs. output. Some of us are better at storing fat than others. Maybe not the best example, but imagine trying to push a train on the tracks which is at a dead stop. Once you get it going, and it leaves the station, bingo. Coasts along.

It may just be a matter of time and nothing more. If you are doing what you say you're doing (and eating) for 4, 6, 12 weeks--and you literally look or feel no different (clothes are not looser, muscle definition not showing, don't weigh less), then I would seek professional help. Perhaps your exercise would have to increase in volume or intensity at that point, or your "cheat" meals or high calorie days would need to be re-evaluated. Usually one of the aforementioned is all that is needed, so don't freak out and up the ante in your exercise AND tweak the calories. Most people just don't give their consistency enough time to take effect and show before they try to tweak their program. I largely fault magazine headlines like "lose your belly in 30 days!" and the like. Consistency ALWAYS wins! <em>edited by Beebers on 29/10/2014</em>

Fire the new employee and ship him and his ill-behaved family back to where they came from. If this behaviour is deemed normal in the privacy of their home one can only guess how the professional attitude will be. It may not be far off. You're in for a lot of trouble with this family and in this country as a sponsor you carry lots of responsibility. Get rid. Yes yes yes. UMM, your home is not a hotel, nor a psych ward. Please don't expose your any kids to this drama, nor take on any more stress yourself. Cut your losses now and do not strengthen your tie to this family anymore. You owe them nothing at all, and a charitable attitude will get you nothing in this case besides heartache.

Online or in "real" life, anonymous or not, I think it is odd to speak to people in a way that you wouldn't in real life just because people can't see your face or know your name. Your words are part of your essence, they are never meaningless. The thumbs up/down feature here probably makes for less negative responses, whereas people can just thumb-down to disagree rather than writing a reply saying so, and same with the thumbs up. Y

That's disappointing : ( So who can I go to for advice on which face wash to buy? I'd rather receive an opinion from someone who has used and perhaps even had success with one than pay AED 300 for a 15 minute appointment with a specialist who will only recommend their clinics "preferred" brand, anyway. My problem is cheek spots. I don't get spots anywhere else on my face, just cheeks. And they're not whiteheads, [b'>they're sore red things that are under my skin and that I can't pop[/b'>. I've spent a fortune on all sorts of lotions and potions from BioDerma, Skin Ceuticals, La Roche Posay, Proactiv...and whilst they've helped, my skin has never cleared up completely, but perhaps it's because the face wash I use has always just been some random one I've got from the supermarket. Maybe I should buy a face wash from one of these brands...even if they are all AED 100+. Has anyone had any experience with a face wash from any of these brands? In that case, I would go to a dermatologist if it were me, I would want to know if it was a condition like cystic acne, rosacea, whatever, rather than just buying more products and hoping for a bandaid to fix a knife wound. While you may be using something that is causing an allergy, it sounds deeper than that.

In the pharmacies, shelf space is limited. Thus the staff are trained to push the high margin items, especially if it is not a big chain pharmacy and individually owned. If they push a certain skin care brand that you've never heard of, or is "brand new" you can bet it is likely the store owner's private label brand. ETA: if staff are following you around, for the most part, it is because of loss prevention training. You don't want to be caught chattering with other employees and then find out at the end of the shift you've had items stolen on your watch. Beauty items are small and easy to "lift." <em>edited by Beebers on 27/10/2014</em>

Here is some food for thought from someone who worked for years in beauty/fragrances both on commission and not on commission. 1. There is always a sales goal whether paid commission or not. That's coming from the store owner or management. So the temptation is there to recommend a more expensive product which is not necessarily better from the other options in the same category to meet your goals. 2. Retail does not pay much, especially here. So, most of the time, if they are saying a product works, they are just trusting the marketing material or the vendor rep. Chances are they have never tried an item which is expensive unless the vendors gave samples. As far as I know, only vendors to Sephora shower the staff with freebies, and that was back in the US and may have changed. 3. Unless someone has my type of skin or concern, chances are they have no idea what would work well for me. I am not going to ask a 20 year old with oily skin what to use to fix my crepey eyes 4. Sometimes the vendors pressure the store to upsell with their items if the numbers are trending bad. So the manager may say "Hey, we really need to push X brand, their numbers are down and we need to provide better brand support which they were promised. As an incentive, sometimes the brand reps will offer a prize for whomever sells the most of one of their key items in a fiscal month. I remember when Guerlain first came out with their mascara in the gold tube (can't think of the name) and their rep offered us $500 worth of free Guerlain for whomever sold the most in our store. I was honest "Hey, we have a contest...but actually the mascara is really good." lol it worked :)

Yes your phone will pick up the WiFi when you're at home Right. In the settings on your phone, just make sure you have both the wifi and the data in the "on" position. I have an HTC, not sure what you do, but I think smartphones are mostly the same. It will pull off wifi when that option is available, and only pull off the data when wifi is not available.

AM, that is a good idea to buy the pre-paid data packages for du. With Etisilat, I just punch in a code to subscribe every week and it pulls from the credits on my phone. I have a du data card for my iPad (haven't used it in ages) and if memory serves, the 50 dhs option for 100MB was the best deal. The 20MB did not get far. If you get the 50 dhs/100MB package, it automatically expires in 30 days or upon using all the 100MB, whichever occurs first. I'm in the marina also, and have a combo package with du for the house, with wifi. Had they told you when you signed up that they didn't offer wifi in this area, or am I misunderstanding you?

Whatsapp info for dummies required please :) So I put whatsapp on my phone to receive some photos from the England, but there's no wifi connection here and when my family sent me photos it drained all my credit (around 30 Dirhams worth). For those that use it, do you buy a seperate data package per month (or pay as you go data)? or do you keep the wifi on all the time. Should I turn off the mobile data on the phone when using it?. My phones not big enough to access internet, just a cheapo one really, and I don't use it enough to want to pay a monthly internet charge. I thought Whatsapp was free, what am I doing wrong? edited by Alismum on 27/10/2014 Hi AM, I don't know which carrier you use, but here is what I do with Etisalat. I pay as I go for data, and buy a weekly data package. It is 20 dhs. This gives 100 MB credit. I get a ton of photos and this is always enough. If you have Etisalat and want to do this I can give you step by step instructions. On my phone settings, I keep both the data and the wifi switched on. When there is wifi present, it always will pull off that rather than my data.

It's complete garbage. Over 100,000 views of this thread though. Welp, Dr. Oz has a lot of viewers too, doesn't he. If he is still even on the air....don't know. It's indicative of how many people want to take a magic pill and wake up thin and fabulous days later. Always have said (and usually thumbed down for it) take the time you spend researching BS supplements, and spend it busting your a$$ in the gym. Might be pleasantly suprised
