Instead of these constant threads about how quiet it is/how many dull threads etc, can't anyone think up some interesting topics. Make it up if you have to!!! (Cucumber seller/mango slicing for the maid etc) Mince stomping, something!

Haven't had the pleasure of meeting seasoned expats yet. :) But noticed a lot of people aren't friendly and that's coming from a New Yorker. ha :) I love New Yorkers, they are lovely in my experience!

I agree it is kind of funny. Also, meeting these "seasoned" Dubai expats, I can tell you: they are 100% annoying! Dollars to donuts, they try to ascertain which percentage you belong to within the first few minutes of meeting you and are not satisfied until they can do this. Shut up and drink your beer, grump.

So treat humans worse than animals just cos they are poor and in a place where you can abuse them? Exactly. So much exploitation happens here, and then the old, tired saying "well it was better than what they had back home." Oh, then that makes it okay to underpay and overwork people, because in their home country, things are much worse.

Have you read Currency Wars, Guinness? Yes, I have ... the trouble we're facing now is that the entire world is sliding backwards economically and it's each country for its own when it comes to currency manipulation. Call it a currency war if you like ... Right, not parallel, but had a feeling you may have read it. And there's a lot more trouble than you speak of, but you know that! Good grief, it's bad. DH and I became big-time Bullish after I think, the first QE in the US, and we were vindicated in our choices with many events that followed, especially the big pipeline deal between China and Russia as well as the BRICS nations' actions. It will be an interesting decade to come.

I am still traumatized from my DD's 9th birthday party last year. She invited all the girls in her class as well as some of their female siblings - about 20 girls to our home for lunch, games, snacks, and cake. I ordered Hardee's and there were loads of other snacks and drinks. I organized lots of different games, with prizes. We had a huge Baskin Robins ice cream cake. I ensured every girl won a prize and had a bag of sweets to take home. After the party (at 6pm), there were still 3 girls left (sisters - one only 3 years old!). I called their father (the local Imam) several times to remind him to come to collect his daughters, only to be told that he was busy, not to interrupt him, and that he come when he was ready. During the "wait" of 5 hours, I heard shuffling and noise in my kitchen, I went in and the eldest of the 3 girls was, with shopping bags in her hands, going through my fridge and cupboards,[b'> filling several shopping bags full of food - fresh, frozen, and canned.[/b'> I was shocked! The father finally arrived to collect his daughters at 11:00pm!! [b'>The girls left, with shopping bags full of food in hand. They left my home with several frozen chickens, a leg of lamb, minced meat, canned tomatoes, tomatoes and beans, fresh milk, fresh fruit and vegetables, and several bottle of olive oil.[/b'> NEVER AGAIN!!! It has been a year, I am still traumatized, and I still can't believe this girl behaved in this manner. What the !?!?!??!

Does it have to be a female? From personal experience, you get pushed harder and get more encouragement from the guys. When I used to train, I hard a hard time retaining female clients. Most of my male friends that were trainers had the opposite issue and said I must have been too hard on them ;) OP really it is whomever you feel most comfortable with. Whether female or male, it should be the right "fit" and you may need to try a few out. If memory serves there is a b woman named Elena (???) that used to be highly recommended on here, I think by a poster named suze63 or something like that. I recall well, because the poster was so happy with her results and this female trainer came to the house. Sorry can't be more helpful.

Well, I guess it would hurt if you eat it on a weekly basis. We have N_K_D maybe once every two months and I doubt that will shut down my thyroid or mess with my hormones. Never bothered me, either. Used to live on NKD! Unless you have a medical condition that requires you to exclude ingredients (celiac, diabetes, shellfish allergy, etc)--there is little scientific proof that merits avoiding certain ingredients or chemicals. We are quite the adaptable and resilient species. I would, if anything, warn people about the amount of fiber of NKD pizza crust's ancestral blends.

The most notable would be having dinner with the late Charlton Heston. I sat next to him at a small charity event and he was so kind. Answered my silly questions about Planet of the Apes and seemed to enjoy responding. He said that for several months after the film's completion, people would say "Hey Charlie!" and start talking to him on the street, whereas he could not figure out who they were even though they were oddly familiar. Eventually he would figure out which "ape" they were. The makeup took so long to put on, they were rarely seen out of it. My cousin is friends with Kevin Spacey. THAT is someone I would like to meet!

Annie, when I was treating spots and dark patches I used Clarins HP White cream in the jar. Besides using an exfoliating cleanser and high sunscreen daytime moisturizer, this cream was the only whitening/lightening product in my regimen, and it worked very well for me. When I stopped using it, some spots came back, but this is typically the way it works. If the spots on your face are dark brown or black, it may not be strong enough for you. My skintone is medium. This cream cost 300-320 dhs a jar. It lasted 2-3 months. Alternatively, you may want to check into laser treatments to treat spots. I don't know what this costs here, but back home, I had a friend that swore getting laser every year and a half worked out more economically that spending money on lightning products. I'm considering that myself!

Which fruits? I am really happy with what I get from Geant, but I stick to bananas, pineapples, apples, and kiwis. They are kind of foolproof for me. I think it is a cultural thing, I spent many years in Colombia and they dont queue and no one gets upset, they just all so seem know who goes next etc but like us British we love to form queues even when there is no need we all just stand behind in a line....its amazing the difference with something like this and how some cultures like order and are quite pedantic about it.... Yes, it was like this in Mexico, a free-for-all. :) Yet, I noticed the elderly were given respect and special regard, if there was some semblance of a queue. Regarding the metro: Some expats come from countries where getting on the train is a fight to death with no regard for those trying to exit, and packing in like sardines is totally normal. While some expats adopt the "when in Rome" attitude, plenty of people take their habits and culture with them and have no intention of trying to adapt to those around them. What I can't understand is the complete lack of awareness of surroundings in, for example, MOE on a somewhat busy day. Do people not realize they are basically walking road blocks? Are they in a different dimension? I feel sometimes, like I am the only person trying to get out of other people's way. One day, I wondered what would happen if I didn't move. omg....was like the shoulder-checking Olympics. In what culture is this normal? Even in tourist ridden areas with self consumed people--places like Las Vegas, Disneyland--never experience so many people just wandering without a care.

The woman with her trolley waiting in front of us for the lift were so close to the doors that when it arrived the various people inside with trolleys & prams could barely get out! Reminded me of my Dubai a metro experiences... [b'>People pushing themselves on before letting anyone get out and actually make some space[/b'>. I heard it is NUTS these days. I am glad that I do not *have* to take the metro. I would lose it.

I was trying to catch an elevator in my office building two days ago, and this lovely lady stared straight at me as the doors were closing. As I tried to get in, balancing laptop bag, lunch bag, and trays up cupcakes for a birthday party...she didn't move a muscle. Tried to balance it all with the doors closing in on me, ending up dropping laptop bag (crash) and the cupcake tray. She looked down on me as I picked up my things, then pressed the "door closing" button. I was in shock.....really, too shocked to even say something nasty, witty, or what-have-you. I will never understand the disconnect with some people.

Fairy Dust: We beat the same drum. Always nodding when reading your posts :) CrepeSuzette: So do you :) I've been a trainer intermittently over the years but not at present. Sounds like you are walking the walk! Ilovecandy: There was a time when I was reaching the numbers MFP was telling me I would in "5 weeks," but that was when I was eating in a caloric deficit and running 5km/day with no weight training for a 2 month stint last year. Put some on when I started weight training. Glycogen, interstitial fat, increased bone density, water, etc and then the scale was irrelevant. It is a motivating feature though, for some! Polly: Those '5' were my own personal history, and I could go on. Eventually ya quit beating your head against the wall Coffeebean: Hi!! :) Schnuppi: I hope our answers are not discouraging to you--most if not all of us have been in your shoes and that is why some of the tough love--we are just telling you the truth. Reading again through the recommendations, it might look like a lot to take in all at once, but you don't have to do it all. In fact those that try to drastically change overnight have high failure rates. The good thing is you are at zero. What do I mean? Not exercising, not counting your calories, not being consistent--the only place for you to go is up! Pick one action that is in line with your goal. Just one. Like: 1. I will count my calories for 3 days in a row, so I at least know where I am at. (How do you know what to change if you don't establish a baseline?) 2. I will do some push-ups every morning when I wake up until I can do 10. If I cannot even do one, I will still try every day until I can do 10. 3. I will walk to pick up that dozen of eggs rather than call delivery. 4. I will go stand up and walk around various times during the day rather than stay seated at my desk 5. I will park further away from the entrance than normal at the mall 6. I will lie on a mat and do leg/bum lifts while I watch tv Pick something, anything, and make it a habit. It will do mental wonders and you'll feel better the next time you focus on the weight you want to lose, because, you are doing something about it. edited by Beebers on 16/10/2014

Polly: At first, I called it "my fitness pest" because I am not technically inclined and it aggravated me. Within a week, it was second nature. Now, I rarely use it. May not be worth it to you, but I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to lose weight. Calories are the name of the game, and like suzy said, many people forget half of what they eat, nor know the caloric content. Sakhifa: Yes, in a few cases it leads to a fixation that would be considered mentally unhealthy or even an eating disorder. What are they calling it these days, Orthorexia? Basically, the food police. It's not the norm though, and for people worried about becoming obsessed, it's unlikely. This is directed at no one in particular: If you have the time to piddle around on facebook, EW, or read celeb gossip, you have the 5-10 minutes to waste on myfitnesspal. Promise. What you [b'>don't[/b'> have time for is 1. Being unhappy with the way you look. 2. Complaining to your friends or family. 3. Spending an hour on the internet researching conditions (i.e. thyroid) you probably DON'T have. Ask someone who truly has one. Some people can barely get out of bed. 4. Researching detoxes. You have a liver, that's what it does. Detoxes have a placebo effect if any. 5.Researching the miracle supplement you can take to do work for you. It won't. edited by Beebers on 16/10/2014

I like most everything you said, CrepeSuzette :) Only things I would add is that the number of meals and meal frequency are not directly linked to metabolism the way the fitness industry would like us to believe. A lot of that was hyperbolized in order to mass market protein shakes and promote books, and specific programs. Conversely, intermittent fasting is not superior either, as some proponents of IT have also tried to claim their method is superior for boosting metabolism. Eating boosts metabolism, full stop. The longer you go between meals, the lower the "dip" in between, and the higher the metabolic boost when you do eat. It all comes down to which method is convenient and can be turned into [b'>regimentation and consistency.[/b'> I personally do 5 like you. My meals increase in size/calories/carbs as the day goes on, because I feel higher energy and more mental clarity "pecking" throughout the day, and after I train in the evening, I love a big plate of meat and potatoes :) Meal frequency should be tailored for the individual regarding sustainability long terms and reasons mentioned above. Those who should be most concerned with this factor are those with insulin resistance, diabetes, hyper/hypoglycemia, and so on. One more thing....100 squats in a row is about all I can handle, and I consider myself advanced in fitness with decent knees. The OP might croak if she tries that, good knees or not. You must be the Squatenator if that's a breeze ;)

It honestly takes seconds, to open up an app on your phone, find a food with similar properties and add it to your calorie counter for the day. I'm sorry, but in your posts I just see excuses and a lack of motivation and will to actually do anything at all. Sitting on an exercise bike a 'few' times a week will do NOTHING! It has to be a complete lifestyle change. Having a ropey knee is no excuse either! Doesn't stop you doing things with hand weights, planks, resistance exercises at all. If YOU want to make a difference, then YOU have to want it badly enough. Thank you, Fairy Dust!! No one wants to hear the truth.

DD, I understand; that doesn't always go over well. I will try the porosity test, thanks very much for taking the time to explain how to do so. On that shampoo/conditioner, right, they only list the buzzword ingredients which fall halfway through to the bottom of the list :) I am actually happy with the products, and they don't contain the 3 no-nos you listed below. Since I exercise a lot but don't wash my hair everyday, maybe I need to be doing so nightly. That might sound gross, but it really doesn't "need" it every day-- or so I thought. I will try to list the ingredients if I remember but don't want to trouble you too much. Also, this voucher I have is good for Brazilian Keratin or this Organic treatment which is supposed to be chemical free. I will research the latter to see what it really is--maybe I will just forgo it. thanks again :)

I think you can post your blog here; others have in recent days to advertise their Dubai lifestyle blogs.

Not sure if this is true, or true for all, but one of my stylists told me that August/September/October are the worst for hair loss in Dubai-- due to the humidity. DD4, I would be interested in reading your blog. I have had hair fall for years, and worse in Dubai. Frankly, I don't know how I still have so much. But I would like to keep what I have. Yes--Americans feel obligated to send a gift because of being invited. Enter the subject of 1000s of Dear Abby letters :) I have encountered this many times though, where you are only contacted by a family when events come up that guests are expected to bring gifts...and it is tacky. She says no no, not at all. If you feel bad doing nothing, just send them a card maybe? edited by Beebers on 14/10/2014

I am a little confused, the family lives here? If they are having the events in Goa, it could be because they cannot afford to have them in Dubai and it would be financially and logistically impossible to have a large family back in Goa commute to Dubai and afford the accommodation on top of it. First Communion or Confirmation is considered equally as big an occasion as a wedding in this culture. If you were invited to their marriage, this was probably why you were invited to their child's communion. This is from a Goan I work with :) She is a genuinely lovely girl with a huge heart as are several other Goans I have met. I don't think anyone is trying to get money from you

There is just no way to tell how much the OP weighs, or how much she is eating, so recommendations for meals, calorie counts etc are useless. According to Lean Bodies Consulting (and others), who are a good example of sound nutritional experts that coach hundreds of women on how to lose weight in a healthy and non restrictive manner, here is a general formula for you. I've used it as a base, along with many others I know, and it works. Multiply your weight in pounds X 14 or 15 for maintenance daily calorie intake. Eat that number of calories to maintain what body fat you have. *if you do not exercise, use 13.5-14. Multiply your weight in pounds X 10, 11, or 12 for a number of daily calories that should put you in a deficit. This means you should be losing fat eating this number. *Begin with multiplying by 12. If that caloric intake does not work after staying true to it, and giving it time, multiply by 11 and try that, and so on. Let's say the OP eats just what she said and calculate on the higher end 1. Caramel Macchiato (venti size 20 oz) is [b'>300 calories[/b'> 2. Chinese Chicken salad (full portion Cheesecake Factory--about as big a salad as you can get on planet earth) [b'> 962 calories[/b'> 3. Lite dinner--let's go with 6 oz chicken breast, 1 cup veggies, 15g butter, and a dinner roll. [b'>436 calories[/b'> That's roughly 1700 calories. If this accurately reflects the daily diet of the OP, at least in caloric intake, and she weighs 80kgs, she is undereating. If she weighs 60kgs, she is overeating. It's all math. Anyone who wants to can take personal responsibility and figure it out. But, adding exercise to your life changes everything.
