Great, thank you! I was thinking of all those actually, but so many different ones! Any NYX one in particular that's nice? I used to love Bourjois mascaras, I hadn't tried a single one I didn't love so I might look if there's one I haven't tried yet. Has anyone tried (or even seen) maybelline "super film" or "hyper curl"? I used to use the Bourjois mascara that was in the all-black tube. At first it's great, but then it gets verrrrry goopy and messy in the tube. One of the mascaras I like to use now is the Maybelline volumizing mascara in a blue tube with pink writing. For 40-odd dirhams it's really good. It is not as black and dramatic as the YSL volumizer mascara I have, but it is usually my go-to because I can apply it without too much care or thought and it goes on great every time and curls my lashes upward.

Oh look, amanso has reincarnated promoting her favorite doctor. Cleopatra, I thought you were highly recommending the doctor who did your veins on another thread? I am bumping this because I would actually love a real review on a doctor that does good work on spider veins. <em>edited by Beebers on 12/04/2015</em>

@Tally THANK YOU for saying that! I am glad to know this sounds too little because I thought it was too! I have a 3BR 2BA house with a yard here in Texas and I would like to have a lateral move at least! I mean we'll be making really good money with almost everything but groceries paid for but I do not think that is enough for housing! I thought I was being greedy! Agree with TB, for sure. DH and I lived in Texas. I would estimate that you are not going to be able to have something comparable here unless your housing is 300,000 AED yearly on up. That is, a 3 bedroom house with a spacious yard, pool, and greenery, etc. I know Texas is hot, but nothing quite compares to the heat here! Not to be discouraging, as we have been here 5 years and love it, and work around the hot months. However we have no children so our life is less complicated.

Hi GP, you will find that admin jobs here pay 3-8000 dhs montlhy, and office manager jobs range 8-14,000. That's just what I've seen. Likely as an American you wouldn't even be considered for an admin job so I wouldn't waste your time applying. You will be considered overqualified or more importantly, too expensive. Hospitality sector for the most part is as you have observed--I have an American friend leaving that sector for a restaurant management position for double the salary, but talk about long hours! Have you registered with a head hunter? On Gulftalent.com there are a slew of Exec PA/Exec Asst to CEO roles that pay anywhere from 15,000-25,000 dhs monthly, or at least there were last year, so possibly consider that? Often they specify they want a Western educated university grad. Alternatively, if you're a go getter and have the gift of gab, try looking into a business development role. I have several girlfriends here that do BD in different sectors and they are paid well.

It's an old scam; it has replaced the "my great aunt such-and-such has died, left me millions, and if you send me $10,000, the money will be released and you can keep half." I've seen people fall for this before in the offshore sector for oil and gas. Dead giveaway is asking you for money for "processing," poor spelling and/or grammar in the email, and promise of a salary higher than you'd expect. Oh...and the fact that you can apply for a job in UK online and be hired automatically...that's kind of dubious.

I opened a current account for salary transfer the Emirates NDB this year. I had been happy using Noor Bank, but the lack of ATM machines and locations were frustrating at times. Regarding your DH's options, I was told by my colleagues to go with the bank our company uses, as salary will be transferred faster. I chose ENBD instead, because that didn't matter to me; I still get paid every month on or about the same day. I also liked the credit cards options better at ENBD, and it will be easy to apply and get approved for a credit through the bank where your salary is getting transferred. Something else to think about is loans. I was told--not sure if it is true--that it is better to get a loan through a bank like HSBC as you will be paying more toward the principal as opposed to using a Sharia Bank. I'm not applying for a loan any time soon so I've not looked into that further. Can only assume it is easier to get an auto loan, for instance, at the bank where salary is transferred, so if it is true about the principal, that is something to consider.

SD, for any visa related issues, I would check with AMER services (residency and foreigner affairs) 8005111. Might be worth your friend asking them what happens to her DL and car insurance once the resident visa has been cancelled--or at least they can point her in the right direction. Alternatively, your friend can hire a car if she has an active driver's license from her home country. I don't think some things automatically work in reverse. Bank accounts for instance--I know plenty of people who have kept old salary transfer accounts and didn't have a resident visa.

I am just going to mention something that I think is obvious, and I hope I don't **** anyone off on an already charged topic. Did it ever occur to anybody here this may have something to do not just with the cleaning/hours of work expected....but if the job requirement includes traditional Indian cooking? While some people are really making this a racist issue, or a maid treatment issue, etc. I think it could be a lot more simple than that. Maybe Filipino maids are assuming they will be required to eat/cook a cuisine they just don't like, and do it often. I love Indian food from time to time, but preparing it is another story. I find it delicious in doses, but pungent, and couldn't be around it every day. I feel the same way about other cuisines too, but just going with the Nationality of the OP who is struggling to find a maid. I might be way off base, and not assuming everyone of Indian nationality eats Indian food 24/7, just putting it out there.

The simple answer is because it is allowed here - you see it on LinkedIn, in the papers / on job boards - not just here on the EW jobs forum. In the end it saves you and them wasting time, applying for a job they don't want and you interviewing someone you don't want. [b'>As sadly (look through old forum posts) it works both ways.[/b'> Exactly--a countless number of posts here "looking for a ________ maid." No one gets riled up about that. I don't think it is a racist or discriminatory thing at all. There are certain nationalities I prefer not to work for, but it is a work culture thing. I prefer not to work Saturdays and with a few nationalities that is the norm. How is that racist?

What is the annual fee on the NBD platinum card? Is it 700 dhs? Is the Emirates Islamic equiv better? HC, 700 is the annual fee for the ENBD Platinum, yes, and often they will waive the first year fee. There is miles accrual with that one, but there is another ENBD credit card that has a buy in of 3000 dhs which makes you Emirates Silver status for life--or as long as you have the card, cant remember.

But if it's so difficult to upgrade with miles, which it seems to be, what's the point of being loyal? edited by Geordie expat on 05/04/2015 For me, the lounges are a huge plus. I like to get to the airport early, shop, then relax in the lounge until my flight. Plus, being based in Dubai and traveling a lot, there are direct flights nearly everywhere I need to go.

Hi Diamante, I would recommend Khalil at 0506571215. He sorted a new front door lock for us and was very professional. The charge was 300 dhs, but I don't know if that was the Friday night emergency rate or what. (broke off a key in the door!). I have dealt with others whose names I can't even remember, and would be hard pressed to trust just anyone.

Thanks for letting me know. That is a bit rubbish. My husband was upgraded from Gatwick to Dubai last summer when he had gold membership so I was hoping it was a bit of a regular thing when you reach platinum. How disappointing! I am Platinum and do not expect an upgrade - I pay for it if required - how disappointing? Goodness gracious - what has the world become when you're not upgraded for free...... I'm with you, I also pay for business class when I want it, and agree it is a little silly to expect upgrades no matter what level Skywards membership someone has. I think that Emirates flights used to be overbooked more often before they added more routes and flights per day to certain destinations. Which is why in recent years past more people got upgraded; it was a function of an overbooked flight. My gripe is that it never used to be so difficult to upgrade, and I don't recall that it cost so many miles to do so. My company doesn't always fly me business (not saying "oh poor me!" just saying). However they always purchase the economy fare that allows us to upgrade with our own miles or own money if we wish. This last trip I took, the upgrade cost was much higher than normal, and they couldn't do it in advance, I could only inquire once checked in to see if it was viable. Maybe it is always like this for certain flights? I just don't recall it ever being like this.

I've never been higher than silver, but in 2012-2013 I was upgraded to business on a couple of flights. Both regional, and a couple to New York. I am wondering too, if their policy has changed with this. I think it is true, it is harder to upgrade with miles now. Upward of 50,000 miles on some routes and often--it is not even an option.

Well I don't know if we will cope with expat life because I've never been an expat, [b'>it is a stable relationship else I wouldn't have thought about relocating with my children[/b'>. The children will have regular contact with their fathers, I'm trying my very hardest not to breakdown their relationships but I felt this was an amazing opportunity. I am getting everything in written confirmation from the company for when I present myself to the judge. Whether it's been budgeted or not to come back to the UK it has to happen regardless. AM, in your OP, you said there were no thoughts of getting married until you heard about the visa situation here being problematic (actually, impossible) for unmarried partners. Not trying to sound judgmental, but amazing opportunity or not, I personally wouldn't marry anyone just to be able to move to Dubai. Perhaps see how things play out in the next 6 months? For one, make sure your partner's job works out here and is [i'>stable[/i'> while you sort out the custody issues back home? Your partner can always fly into the UK where you could get married, if that is what you truly want to do? Just some thoughts.

GeordieBird, You hit the nail on the head, off course am not ready to go. As i said previously, i love it here hence why i moved in the first place. Am not ready to throw it all in because i want to enjoy my time here, which unfortunately i haven't so far. God, i have tried every avenue there is in terms of finding a new job, i think its just my luck. [b'> I find Dubai works more in connections and i don't have a lot either. [/b'> I agree i think the work has put me down in terms of confidence whether that is personally or professionally. Thank you for taking your time to send me your thoughts, much appreciated. Dubai (along with any other city) does work in connections in some roles and some sectors but not all. If you were in sales or do business development, you would build a large network as a function of your role, and probably get job offers while you are working. I have never had a formal interview here. If you are in an office, it is not as easy. When I had an office based role, I kept every business card I got, and kept in touch with people. If you are competent, people will see that and keep you in mind. If you develop a good relationship with these contacts, it doesn't hurt to let them know you are looking. Just need to be careful with that of course. Sometimes the best route as a PA is just paying your dues and once you've got a good resume built up in UAE, higher paying PA jobs will open up, or Office Manager jobs as well. Good luck

My friend has bother her lower and upper lids done in Belgium. They look amazing. I had fillers but they only seemed to puff out the area not remove all the lines or dark patches, mine weren't too bad though. I will go down the surgery option in 10 years or so :-) Oh really? I know the results vary. For now concealer is doing the trick, it's just that I "need" it every day. I've lost some weight recently, and my circles are really prominent. :( Truthfully I am very hesitant to do anything. I am in bad need of getting my nose fixed (deviated septum) and I am worried it will change it. It's not perfect, but I don't want a different one! OP btw, I wasn't saying fillers or cosmetic surgery is "the" answer, but dark circles are really hard to get rid of. If they are due to some of the reasons I mentioned in my other post, you'll definitely see improvement if your environment or lifestyle sees a change. Report back if you have luck with the grapeseed oil! I've never seen a huge benefit from skin care but I'm happy to be corrected!

Dark circles can become prominent as we age. Skin tone and genetics play a role as well. As some of the elastin and hyaluronic acid breaks down in the skin, and less collagen is produced (after age 28) the skin around the tear troughs also thins out. For the most part, there are no topical agents that can help this, nor so called lightening creams because the skin is becoming more transparent--not becoming darker. As far as procedures, fillers do wonders, and if you check out before and after photos on realself.com, it is almost enough to make me consider it. (Having issues myself lately). Factors such as not drinking enough water, smoking, lack of sleep, vitamin B deficiencies, and alcohol consumption also exacerbate dark circle prominence. When removing eye makeup, also take care to choose a removing agent that requires less rubbing. I usually go for the waterproof removers for this reason.

Thanks again ladies. Appreciated. I guess I am just worried about those melancholy feelings that Beebra mentioned. Any particular tips Beeber? Would so love to prevent him having those feelings!xx Rockabye, I am not trying to paint a glum or sad picture by any means and like Ruby said, you can't predict anything. Number of siblings is not indicative of happiness or that they will even get along or be close or happier for it. When my older siblings were young, my mother had a lot of help from my father, as well as other couples with friends the same age. Play dates, vacations, the whole 9 yards. When I came along, my father worked 6 days a week + owned a business, and I was around my mother 24/7 which just seemed to be too much for her. Older siblings were dating and driving, and I was a pest wanting what I guess are the normal things. Play with dolls, go to the zoo, make a mess baking cookies, whatever. My Mom would take me to work with her in the summers, or to her coffee/grape dates or send me off to the neighbors to see if they had chores I could help with :) I would go off on my bike for the day trying to find friends, but there were not many kids in my neighborhood. I highly doubt this is the norm, and that is why I say it is an environment thing that lead to my feelings of isolation and loneliness. Not every child with a big age gap with their siblings or who is an only child feels this way!! My friends today that were only children are highly well adjusted across the board! The fact that you are conscious of it and maybe a little worried about says to me your LO will be just fine! x

I guess firstly I'll state the obvious: the law is the law, and cohabiting is illegal whether you are a local or an expat. You're not really going to be doing that, though, you are simply having a visitor--but again, laws are the same for visitors as well. It can be confusing when you know what the laws are, but also know plenty of people that abide otherwise. Unmarried celebrity couples featured in magazines posting pics of their hols, obviously staying in the same hotel room are just one example of the mixed messages about Dubai. No one would be any the wiser of who visits you unless you cause a giant disturbance resulting in a call to the police who show up at your home, or if you guys behave badly in public while intoxicated. It's rare but it can happen. Sorry to jump from A to Z and "go there," but it's a reality--if you were to get pregnant and need care here while unmarried, that is a real issue. It could be considered a grey area because everyone knows someone who has a partner they are not married to that visits them here, or even lives together. Considering it is against the law and these forums are monitored, I don't think anyone is going to jump in and say "Oh yes we do it all the time, no issue" but the reality is many do. Not sure if I have helped or added to your quandry

[b'>Can't believe I'm up at this unearthly hour![/b'> Hilarious! :) Yeah, I was SO excited the other night when DH broke the key off in our lock. It had been sticking a bit and should have had it serviced prior, but things get away when you're busy I guess. They came out in 30 mins and charged us 300 dhs. I was really surprised at how quick, professional, and efficient the tech was. Almost scary lol. Hope they can help! Good luck with your cat :)

Just to add another perspective, I am not an only child, but have a good age gap between myself and my siblings. The myths that rubyslippers mentioned are sweeping generalizations--although I definitely exhibited a couple of those myths. Truthfully, I spent much more time around adults rather than my peers from a young age, and this affected me both positively and negatively. I was never really "allowed" to be a child and at the time, I was really craving that experience but couldn't articulate or understand why I felt isolated and often melancholy; square peg in a round hole if you will. Looking back, it's plain as day, of course. OP, I guess what I am trying to say is that, IMO, there is no "nature" to an only child, it's a nurture and environmental thing.

We had 2 of these Kangen water machines back in the US at my work. The boss wanted to try them out and we were encourage to use it ourselves as well. It was a bit of a rage in the health and fitness industry for a while--along with IV ozone therapy for diehards or those seeking alternative treatment for kidney disease and other serious illnesses. Wade Lightheart is a huge proponent of the Kangen water, too. Anyway, the water tastes, well, interesting. They suggest starting with like an 8 or 8.5 and working your way up to 9 pH. The first time I tried 9 it just made me ill. I did use the acid setting for "beauty" purposes, and I guess it tightened my pores, but truly a lot of the "evidence" is anectdotal. I procured the machines from a gentleman with the surname of Morningstar if I am not mistaken and the company was Kangen Water Enagic. Believe the systems were $4000 a pop 6 years ago. One of the big red flags for me was the pressure to become a distributor upon purchasing the systems. There were some folks in our circle that were noticing an improvement in health markers, but at the time, there were so many variables going on that we couldn't really chalk it up to the water. Many of the spokespeople follow a partial juicing plan or other "healthy" eating plans which can largely account for good health. Plus...homeostasis is something the body works very hard at. You just can't "alkalinize" your system through foods or liquid you ingest. We stabilize at 4.5-5.5 and that's just that! Good luck in your research. It is difficult to find unbiased info on Kangen water on the internet, and I can think of a lot of other good things to spend $4,000 USD on...if it still costs that.

Not to take away what the other lovely ladies have said, but I'm closer to 40 than 30, and DH and I thought about it and..we don't really want to be parents. we enjoy our life as is. At one point, I worried I would regret it, but now am very comfortable in our decision not to. Nothing wrong either way. i know if we got pregnant, we'd never regret it and probably couldn't imagine another life without. But we simply don't want that, which at times, raises some judgment our way. End of the day, it's your life. Do what you want and what you can afford.

DT - You are right to be concerned. Your instincts are correct. You should tell the Mother. Anyone posting anything about someone's children online needs to have that Parent's permission. If she does than so be it. Nobody should post pictures of children online without a Parents' concern regardless of wether they are a coach, teacher or housekeeper - simple. I can appreciate you being concerned about what is fair and unfair to the account holder but we are talking about children and an online presence. I for one am fanatical about my children's online presence. I know I would appreciate the opportunity to properly address the situation if someone were to post photos of my children online without my permission. ;) What about other parents? I post photos of my children's teams at sports tournaments etc and have never asked permission of the other parents. I've never had permission asked of me either but know others have posted similar photos with my children in them. I agree that if someone is employed in a role that brings them in to contact with children they should not put photos of them online without permission but where do you draw the line? I think the issue that DT is concerned about is that the parents of the children might be totally oblivious to the photos being online and possibly were not asked permission, and the fact that the maid has zero privacy settings which could also indicate location as another poster said. There was another thread on this topic where a maid was posting photos of herself in a home she was working in, and family photos of the employer were in the background. The general consensus was that it was not cool. It is 99% likely, IMO, that this maid simply likes the children and taking care of them is her life. She wants to share what she is doing day in and day out, and means nothing nefarious by posting the photos. Some people are "oversharers" on FB and don't think about what they are doing sometimes. A former assistant of mine took some photos of herself at her desk and posted them online--one was a close up head shot with her computer screen behind her, fully visible, which contained sensitive company information--I'm not kidding. Certain professions, we would hope, come with some sense of discretion whether it is a maid, driver, PA, etc but unfortunately sometimes you need to spell things out.

No words make me irrationally angry. Angry is a strong word and it is hard to get that reaction from me. If I would be, it would be insulting words used in a context, in a situation where it is at a tipping point. The person is the one I would be angry with, not the words themselves. I *think* that falls in the category of rational. I couldn't imagine living life being irked by certain words every time I heard/saw them for no rational reason. I was raised by someone like that and it took me a long time to realize that I too would become miserable if I experienced life through the same vantage point.

[b'>I tried the baking soda and cider vinegar[/b'> instead of shampoo and condition a few months ago. I didn't like the result: my hair felt brittle and dry afterwards and very "fly away" and I didn't like the smell of the vinegar. I have gone back to my regular shampoo and conditioner. I do use caster oil on my hair regularly as a treatment before I shampoo - I apply and leave for the day before shampooing. I also use Argon oil on my hair after washing. Same, same. Yuck. :) I followed the instructions to a tee and smelled of vinegar for days anyway. There was a "no poo" thread on here in the past year-- seem to remember another poster being passionate about it and had some good tips, maybe search for that? Personally, I use a sulfate free shampoo and leave in conditioner every 3 days. I don't use any special filters, bottled water, or anything like that. I found that my hair fall was the worst when I went longer in between shampooing, and also when I color treated/bleached it. Since I quit highlighting and coloring it all together 2 years ago, I have virtually no hair fall.

Also just a tip, if you are reporting a plate, make sure you get the make/model of the car as well as the letter at the start of the number I called the other day to report two drivers who I thought had crashed in front of me and stopped, or had a burst tyre or something. But no, they had decided to have a fight (by car) so were doing that whole thing of driving, stopping in front of each other, swerving to block the other one across multiple lanes, etc. This was at 7.20 am on a major high speed highway during school/rush hour traffic! (No idea of nationalities by the way!). Anyway, the man on the phone was very patient with me but as he looked up each number as I didn't have the make/model/Letter - he was saying, was it a Lexus? me: uhhhhhh, was it a Mitsubishi? me: uhhhhhh until eventually he had to give up :) So they got off with it! Next time.... Gad you posted this. I read this before I left the house, and some schmuck ran a red light when I was walking through the crosswalk and missed me by a meter! I'm calling it in now, that really ticked me off.

What Cheeky Monkey said. I know logs can be annoying for people at first, but a little math goes a long way when you're trying to count calories. The benefits outweigh the cost

Try The Cobbler, they are in the DIFC and Dubai Mall. I believe they do bag repairs. I have used Loving My Bag before for a repair of a bag and honestly they made absolutely no difference, I wasnt happy with the service. I didn't know they did bags, but certainly heard they are really good.. The cobbler shop across from LuLu in Barsha is N Dust, and if they can't repair your bag, there is a store a few doors down called..."Threads" something or other, they may recommend Heard good things also about the Bag Spa [url=http://www.mybagspa.com/page.php?id=how_we_work&country=1'>link[/url'> but no personal experience.

The two you are looking for are not stocked in pharmacies here. Reason being, they contain the specific form of progesterone in the "day after pill"

At the risk of sounding like a psycho, my only "must-do's" are shopping and sharpening my knives! I wanted to golf tomorrow but looks like it is going to be massively windy. All the claritin in the world can't save me in this case.

Hi Barlas, just wanted to add that eczema is not something that can be gotten rid of, only treated, as no one knows the root cause. He is not close to the Marina per say, but I went to Dr. El Hoshy 2 years back in Jumeirah. Not sure if he is still there, and when he was here, it was intermittent. He prescribed me Dermovate cream and Atarax tablets to be taken at night (both can be bought OTC) when I was having flare ups. I have used the cream on my chest and neck, but I would be hesitant to tell someone to use it on their face. It can cause hyperpigmentation (temporary or in rare cases permanent) and also cause photosensitivity. The topical and the oral meds keep things at bay but do not prevent recurrences. I wish there was something permanent, and hope you find some relief. Something you may want to ask your dermatologist evening primrose oil. The University of Maryland conducted a promising study on EPO and there is strong evidence to suggest symptomatic relief. I am not a huge believer in supplements, but I wondered if there is a correlation between the fact that I have stopped EPO and my flare-ups are worse than ever. Also, I've not been to see her, but Julianne Richter gets great recommendations on this forum.

I fly Emirates whenever possible, to accrue miles. However, I am looking at a 9 hour flight later this month, and am almost considering getting a business class ticket on a less expensive airline rather than fly Emirates coach. It is such a different experience to fly business class. I'm not speaking of luxury but more or less the leg room you get, and not feeling like **** when you land after a long flight but have to go straight to work.

You are reaching that stage when you've been gone longer than a holiday, so the move is finally hitting home! It is harder too as you are not working and are stuck at home. I would seriously look at getting your own transport, as it will make the move here a lot easier, especially as you are not living anywhere near any major malls or even the metro. But I am in my 7th year now, it does get easier, and once you start meeting friends and going to coffee morning etc - you will ok and time will start flying by! :) Excellent advice

Simple yet interesting question. For me, a "happy" feeling is fleeting and doesn't last. That doesn't mean I'm unhappy in its absence, but rather I am content in my life as a whole. The things I am not satisfied with I either work to improve if they bother me enough, or say "oh well" if the dissatisfaction doesn't eat at me. I have highs and lows like most everybody else. Sometimes they last a minute, sometimes a day. Depends what happened. I also think that one doesn't have to feel happy all the time. To me, that's a farce. If something irks me, I let it irk me and move on. If I feel negatively about something recurrently, I will analyze it and see what I need to do to change my outlook. If something terrible happens, I grieve as long as I need to. I don't turn a switch on and tell myself that I must be choose to be happy right that moment if I am not. And I am *happy* with that.

Friday night I believe is live music night--but eh--may be Thursday/

I would ignore the talk about others not having had problems being pregnant before getting married. It can work out for 99 people but you might be the one it ends up going wrong for. So get a test, if you're pregnant get married ASAP and not here in Dubai. [b'>At the end of the day it's illegal, whether your doctor is western or not it doesn't matter[/b'>. Don't think it will work itself out. On this note--don't know from personal experience, but doesn't one have to register for ante-natal care and delivery with the same doctor? You may not get your first choice of Obstetrician. Also, OP, if you had planned to receive ante-natal care and deliver in UAE, irrespective of legality of being unmarried, check the fine print on your pregnancy coverage. God forbid there are complications, certain policies have outrageous co-pays and often, unreasonably low caps on what they will cover. There is something about a waiting period as well I think--some policies only start coverage for maternity once you have been on the policy for 10 months or longer. There is often another clause about underwriting for the newborn which is not always transparent. If there is national health care in your home country, that is another reason to look into delivery elsewhere depending on your insurance coverage. Sorry for the half baked insurance info--been a while since I researched it. Wishing you the best and no stress during this time, just pointing out some other considerations that you might not have considered x
