QS, never mind curt comments. This board, as you may know, is very fickle! You could submit the same post on a different day of the week and illicit completely different responses. One day you're grilled for no apparent reason, and the other, it's CareBears and rainbows to you over your spilled latte. As it goes :)

I'm glad you don't find me preachy about food, I do sometimes wonder if I'm a bit over enthusiastic about a delicious salad ;) I'm not anti-meat at all (I'm cooking some lovely smelling chicken now in fact) although I do whole-heartedly believe in supporting responsible farming methods of animals. Human bodies were designed to be omnivorous, meat just isn't for me. I love salads! And no, you're not. In fact, I am inspired and am going to make myself a bl00dy mary. It's past 5 :) <em>edited by Beebers on 07/01/2015</em>

Beebers, we've cracked it, the elusive elixir of good health! I'm vegan, avoid processed food, eat loads of superfoods and I feel great. I don't eat white bread, milk, butter or beer but I DO eat plenty of chocolate and I exercise a lot. So there you go, whatever else you do load up on the chocolate and exercise and you'll feel great :) :) Agreed, chocolate and exercise for all! Daza, there is no doubt you feel great as your disposition on this forum is always sunny. I am not anti-vegan by any means, and I like the idea. It just doesn't suit me. I don't believe that being vegan is unhealthy, either, it works great for some people. I still do my daily kiwis and apples, and other "good" stuff, but I also eat what I like which happens to be stuff some people frown upon. I really appreciate that you never speak from a stance of superiority and are not preachy about food. We are not defined by our diets.

by 2000 from the 1950s - it takes our bodies longer to start to decopmose after death due to the amount of preservatives we eat...... Sorry, but that's nonsense :) It's another example of how completely incorrect science can get spread by the internet. The preservatives we eat are eliminated from the body, they don't somehow end up preserving *us* :) Did you know that the pregrated cheese in packets has powdered wood pulp in it...... (even the organic ones) And why is that bad for us? The scientific answer is, it's not. At all. It's just ground-up cellulose - plant fibre - which is used to stop the cheese from clumping. That cellulose could come from "traditional" food plants, but that would be a waste of food, which is why wood pulp is used. It's certainly not dangerous in any way, because cellulose passes through us almost completely unabsorbed. Of course, when you say "powdered wood pulp", people immediately think of something like sawdust, which would be completely indigestible. But it's not sawdust. It's just plant fibre. While we're on the subject - the word "organic", in relation to food, is purely a marketing term. It has no scientific basis. And if you think that buying organic food means that you're avoiding pesticides and other stuff like that - nope. edited by VelmaDoo on 07/01/2015 Totally, totally agree. Actually, regarding my GPs, I swear they lived on bologna!!! People talk about the good old days as if there were no other factors affecting their food, and it was "organic-land." There were pesticides used that have since been outlawed (and sold off the 3rd world countries--another topic for another day) which our ancestors ingested. I keep saying, it's activity and of course, genetics. Some people do everything you shouldn't and live a century. Some people do everything right and will pass on very young. The sickest I have ever been was when I was vegan, eating "clean" (somebody, please define that, anyway?) plus superfoods and the like. Now, I eat what I like which happens to be a lot of whole foods as well as a lot of white bread, milk, butter, chocolate and beer. I have the most balanced hormone panel of my life, blood pressure and cholesterol great, I have never felt better, and I largely attribute that a high activity level and moderation of all foods, the "good" and the "bad."

I don't know if that is exclusive to Dubai, but you might get comments that sound much creepier than they are with English as a second language for many people in this region. What I have been irked by is the amount of whatsapp messages I get from strange guys. My number is not know to very many people (always had a separate business mobile) so I don't know if people just search numbers or what. Or if that is even exclusive to Dubai; haven't been back to the States since whatsapp came out. Even have gotten some weird stuff on linkedin of all places. Just set your privacy settings as exclusive as possible and if it bothers you enough, don't go to the sites.

Beebers are they neutered? No they are not. The colder weather has been bringing them around the house recently, we had never even seen them before. When I get back over there, I am hooking up with a friend of mine that works with dog and cat rescue groups to see if there is a neuter/release program. I would be afraid to handle them on my own, honestly.

Izzy, he sounds very cute. I hope you find a home for him. We have between 3-6 Bengals, Maus (long and short hair) and Shirazi/Persian mix strays we feed everyday at the other house. If I had my way, they'd all be in the house but most are feral. Happy to have them in the yard. Besides, our indoor is so needy, constantly talks to us--I don't know how he would do with sharing. The long haired stray Mau is pregnant...DH says noooo way 1 is enough lol

I preheat oven to 180C, wash kale, remove stems, break into pieces. In a bowl, drizzle evenly with olive or sesame oil and toss. Lay out on a baking sheet (I use cooking spray to line the sheets). Season with Sea salt., black pepper, chili, etc. Bake, rotating the trays (usually twice) until crisp, about 12-15 minutes...or up to 20 depending on your oven and how crisp you want it. <em>edited by Beebers on 07/01/2015</em>

I personally believe that the rise in medical conditions is down to two things: 1) advnaces in medical knowledfge / testing / diagnosis - so we are aware of more 2) the amount of cr&p we eat..... by 2000 from the 1950s - it takes our bodies longer to start to decopmose after death due to the amount of preservatives we eat...... Now, as a society we eat more and more premade / processed foods / conveniance foods.... Did you know that the pregrated cheese in packets has powdered wood pulp in it...... (even the organic ones) This could be an entirely different topic. While I agree, "food" has become rather vile in many ways, I stand in the camp that inactivity is the root cause of health issues, not what we are ingesting. Human beings are quite adaptable and resilient in terms of what we can live/survive on. I think the conveniences in life are killing us. My grandparents lived to be nearly 100 and what they ate/drank/smoked was rather shocking by today's standards. But they grew up doing farm work, and labor, and even in retirement would walk across town for a gallon of milk. Their 12 year old car had about 4000 km on it.

Is it simply that more statistics are being done? Are there more diagnoses these days, whereas in our era, there was no autism spectrum, per say? I'd say yes - that's exactly the answer. That's what I thought. And Nomad, you are right, JMC's campaign was very irresponsible in my opinion. DT, I agree, I do not subscribe to the whole "the evil medical community is out to get us" thing. I know some people who have their tin foil hats on so tightly they think it is actually a part of a larger, nefarious, population control thing. At the same time, I think the growing number of "first world" diagnoses, so to speak, and the accompanying prescriptions are not a good direction for the medical community. Other than that I have good faith in medical professionals. (not referring to MMR or autism, but others) For such a hot topic, it is nice to see this thread contain opinions without hurling insults

I have a question. Are the parents who are against immunizations mostly concerned about the possible link to autism? (which Jenny McCarthy seemed to influence a lot, but then again, she has since retracted, no?) Or have the "suspect" additives in the immunizations become more nefarious? I'm asking as I have 2 nephews on the spectrum, and I have been told that autism spectrum diagnosis could reach 1 in 4 by 2050....and I wonder WTH is causing it. So worrying :( DH and I were waxing the other night about how in the 70's and 80's, we were all vaccinated, and many of our parents smoked (with the windows up in cars with no seatbelts), we never wore helmets biking, and lived through the introduction of the fast food and microwave dinners era...and we all seem to be fine. Gen X and such. But it is this next generation that seem to have all of these health issues. A little off track and whatnot, but really what is up? Is it simply that more statistics are being done? Are there more diagnoses these days, whereas in our era, there was no autism spectrum, per say?

Ah. I learn so many new great words here! I think I would prefer to picture LC eating shrooms and posting, still :) Hang in there, Quiksilver. When I feel marooned, which has been several times over the years, I usually pick up a new sport or hobby to dive into. My DH doesn't mind that his office is cluttered with yarn and needles, golf clubs, kettlebells, and other random leftovers from my phases, as long as I support him (happily) by flying by the seat of my pants around the world :) Just because you are back in the UK doesn't mean your days of living abroad are over for good. And, you haven't been transported somewhere where you have to take daily meds to avoid malaria, or can't leave the house. Tomorrow's a mystery, and yesterday is history. For now, how about just kick some ass, take some names, and discover some new things you can do?

I don't doubt your dentist is great, Villa, but plenty of other dentists are also great, they just don't charge exorbitant rates for whatever reason. Dr. Madhu just happens to be recommended on this forum a lot (miracle we can still get appointments with him anymore!) I have friends that go to Sharjah that won't even tell me who their dentists are for fear of exposing treasure and having an empty chest :) I used to feel like you say, you get what you pay for. But the thing is you don't always get what you pay for. Dubai seems chock full of professionals charging exorbitant rates because they [i'>can[/i'>, not because they are [i'>that good[/i'>.

Geez, I could have written that, I wonder if it is a gene some people inherit, or what. First, pat yourself on the back (!!!!) and thank God you got a clean break with no kids by him, court cases, broken bones, financial debt, and you are very fortunate he is not stalking you; that is usually the next step. Second, quit talking to his mother! You are doing yourself no favors and she is contributing to your guilt. In this case, you need to "break up" with the whole family; keep in mind she would love to see you back with her son, so do not trust her or confide in her, nothing. Thirdly, sounds like you have a great guy in your life....allllll the more reason to respect him as he is respecting you, and cut off all contact with your ex's family. I hope you are truly out of the woods and your ex leaves you alone. These guys often threaten suicide after you leave them, or may even try to harm you. I moved 19 times in 10 years, across an ocean, and across another sea, and my ex still found me. I was going to do something about it, but seems he is back in jail again, so I am good for a while. Cut it al off while the getting is good. I hope he doesn't find anyone, the poor girl will only be miserable unless he seeks counseling. Good luck! <em>edited by Beebers on 04/01/2015</em>

I don't know if this is helpful, and am precluding this with the admission that I have no children. That doesn't mean DH and I haven't thought about it long and hard. We are currently 99% sure we will notAlthough I am over 35, the age was never a worry, but if we decided to start a family, we would want 2 children, so I understand the "schedule" you are aiming for. My DH has a brother who is 2 years older, and he feels he would want our children (if we had them) to have a sibling somewhat close in age. On the other hand, I am a trailing caboose and it was more like being an only child than it was being the third child. I did not enjoy it, and it was a struggle at times for my parents. I am not close with my siblings, either, although I'm working on it. Thus our collective experiences make us feel that we would want 2 with a small age gap, if we did it at all. That is unique to us; I don't want to be misunderstood, as I have friends that had the best childhoods they could ask for as only children, and know plenty of people that only want or have one child. But, Singarosa, all the planning in the world doesn't guarantee that things will turn out as you plan, you know? Drawing from my own experience, a happy mother that is having a child when she is ready, and with a solid financial situation, is the best case scenario for all. I like the recommendation that you take a time out :)

Dr. Madhu is the only dentist I've seen here for basic cleanings + I had a root canal with him. He charged me 1600, same as OP, assuming I had 3 canals. The first session didn't sort it. I wound up having a 4th canal, too, which he sorted on a 2nd session, but I was still having pain after the local anesthetic wore off. He put a temporary filler on, again, and told me to come back. The 3rd session, was done without numbing so he could poke around and let my pain dictate where to look, (sucked!) and thankfully, he found a 5th canal. There was no extra charge, so perhaps he has adjusted his prices. I feel this is justified, as it is a lot more work. Crowns, same quote, they started at 800 and went up to 2000, which I believe is for full porcelain. Quite a deal if you ask me. In fact, I'm embarrassed to admit--I still haven't gotten the crown and need to get it taken care of this month while I still have a tooth :(

Bonbon, unless you have a condition such as high blood pressure, where a doctor has told you to avoid salt, you don't have to. It's not unhealthy. But, the calories in any nuts can add up quickly, healthy or not. It may be better for you to eat a bag of crisps a day if that's what you really want! A small bag of crisps Same calories as a 1/4 cup of nuts in most cases. If that is what you want to eat, pair it with a chicken breast or something. A lot of "healthy" foods can leave you feeling hungry soon after. Whenever I eat fruit & yogurt, or sushi...I'm hungry in no time lol. Hunger is not necessarily a bad thing. What I do, personally, is have a jar of pickles (salt kick) and a bag of baby carrots (sweet crunchy kick) in my fridge at all times for when my stomach won't shut up, and it is distracting. You cannot do much damage with those two. If you can, track your calories with an app like myfitnesspal or if you don't have a smartphone/tablet for apps, you can go to their website, myfitnesspal.com from your PC. I suggest this, because it is an easy way to track your calories, by inputting what you eat, rather than reading individual labels or trying to track in your head. Plus, you key will be consistency, and the tool is very helpful. A few months back, I switched up my meal plan, and found that white beans was better for me as opposed to rice with my chicken, because it keeps me satisfied longer. Experiment a little, maybe your wholegrain bread sandwich or the tuna lunch doesn't have enough fiber to fill you up.

But after seeing photos of some brunches, I think there are a few I would never want to go to. One particular photo comes to mind of a woman hiking up her hemline and posing with the chef...was just surprised the venue itself was advertising that on their FB page. I'm no pearl-clutcher, trust me, but if I want that kind of environment for that price, well, places in Vegas come to mind, and they serve better food!

Didn't I read on this forum that African Greys can live up to 50 years? That is a HUGE commitment for you, the owner. I don't know much about breeders here, but please think carefully before you begin growing your own flock of birds. They can live for more than 70 years! Our late, dear family friend outlived hers. He's older now then she was when she passed, and he still perfectly mimics her voice. Bittersweet. Anyway, OP, irrespective of any moral or ethical reasons not to buy a parrot here, the climate is not what I would call conducive. They shouldn't be exposed to direct A/C and they thrive in a higher humidity environment that is kept at a constant. I understand you already have a baby male, but, just sayin...I hope you don't plan to seek a female to breed. I would think a poor African Grey is miserable here!

Hi Bonbon, congratulations again on your upcoming wedding! I think the best thing you can do for free is follow a program like some of those offered on bodybuilding.com: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/jamie-eason-livefit-trainer.html It's got everything you need all in one, free, place. Some other posters may be able to suggest other free programs; I like Jamie Eason's because it is healthy, sensible, and not too restrictive. The only thing that I don't feel is necessary is many of the supplements. If a protein shake meal replacement is recommended, fine, but this site is also a supplement superstore...so it behooves their paid reps and athletes to recommend supplements that can be bought there. Thus, the stress on the extras. Something else...the danger about asking advice on a forum like this is 1) you're not talking to experts (save 1 or 2, but most don't give out free advice or specific plans) 2) you will probably receive too much information and the temptation is to take some advice from some, and other advice from others. The problem with the latter is that many plans work, when followed to a tee. If you are following half of one plan, and mantras of another, that doesn't usually work. Last thing, don't worry about where your major fat deposits are, that should not determine the kinds of exercises you do, or avoid doing. That is nonsense, although a lot of "experts" (think Tracey Andersen) perpetuate this garbage. You [i'>can[/i'> make your legs smaller by never, ever training them. It is called muscle atrophy. But the end result is not a good look, and to get that body moving and burning fat, you need your legs. That's at least 40% of your body's overall power! If you start a program, work out your legs a lot, but cheat on the diet, or don't stick with the program long enough...you *could* experience some bigger thighs. This is due to no fat loss and muscles full of glycogen. That's what most women think of when they say "I bulk too easily" when they really mean "I didn't stick with the program long enough to see the fat loss, or didn't follow it properly." Since you intend to lose 17% bodyfat in 6 months, I can only assume you are planning to be very dedicated. That is no easy feat. Good luck!

I've only been to Iranian hospital when I had emergency abdominal issues and they were fantastic. I was admitted to A & E with horrible pains and fever, and they took me in right away and started doing blood work and tests. Then, got referred to their specialists for scans and ultrasound. (It was a burst cyst). I can't really say enough good things about them, but I've also heard good things about all the aforementioned options. I hope you feel better soon! I'm no desktop doctor, but I have experienced what you are describing to a tee (bloating, lots of pain, shoulder) and it was numerous smal gall stones. They can drive the liver enzymes way up when it has to overcompensate; mine were almost 300. The good news is, if it is the case, there are a lot of treatment options and it is rather common although quite an ordeal! Hope you get it sorted soon, what a way to bring in the New Year :( Feel better and let us know how you get on

Lol, Lola, missed that. That was what they measured at the clinic when I went back. They did an assessment of how many hairs per square inch pre vs. post treatment. I ended up moving and decided I wasn't keen to do it again if it was not permanent. Amanso, I want to believe you, but you keep changing your story on how long he has been your doctor :) Appletiser, have you ever considered an epilator? I bought one for underarms last week, and am really pleased. 100% efficient! It just doesn't work on my legs.

How does anyone hit that caterpillar, seriously? Hope it is not permanent. I'll be putting my calls in, that's for sure.
