We used it and we got fed up at how it never worked and the customer service was horrible. After over 1 month of complaining and deleting the app, they call and then transfer us to another deptartment which transfers us again and then as expected, they disconnect. They are a joke. same here. i downloaded the app to get 10% off at carrefour - it hasn't worked since i got it 6 months ago. great idea, poor execution.

if you want to bring your child into your delivery room, do it. it's your child, do whatever you want. just be prepared to deal with any consequences is all i would say. for those who are confused about why this woman would not take the advice of her doctor - it's better not to blindly follow anyone, even if they're a professional. i don't always listen to my pediatrician, nor do i always accept advice my OB gives me. it's not a matter of me knowing better than them, its a matter of me understanding that even doctors are people and have differing opinions on things. why do some of you opt for second opinions when one dr tells you that a c section is the way to go but you want a VBAC? there are lots of women who have their families with them when they are giving birth - and as for husbands, my husband was with me during my delivery. it has nothing to do with being "strong enough". let's not undermine other women who make different choices just because we made different ones. wind up post or not - sad to see the sanctimony in some of these posts. precisely why women are labeled as ******* - instead of creating a supportive sisterhood we rejoice in blaming shaming and fingerpointing.

My son joined the centre when it first started as a tutoring centre and saw it developing as a school. Let me know if you need more info. thanks for getting back to me - would love to speak to you about your experience there - mostly as full time students, what are the teachers like? and how engaged are the teachers with the kids? are they mostly just on the computer and get help when they need it? what about for the younger years, like KG?

culturally, we never go to anyone's house empty handed, even if it is with a small token. during ramadan, good iftar gifts to bring as someone else mentioned are dates and chocolates (patchi/bateel big favorites) but also any kind of cakes, pastries, sweets, or appetizer type foods - anything that can easily be shared. ramadan gift giving is mostly food related

butterfly, is there a PTA type organization at the school? or at least a school board? you might be able to connect with other parents regarding carpooling. im sure there are many parents who are coming from long distances - do not be put down by the commute - many parents concerned about their child's education and overall welfare opt to "inconvenience" themselves a bit to ensure their child is happy. also i assure you, a child would rather withstand a 2 hour commute than go to a close by school where they are miserable. if you were to use careem, someone previously had mentioned sheikh zayed road is not safe: truth is, none of the roads here are safe. please be conscious of car seat/booster seat usage.

Take care with landlords in Jumeirah/Umm Suqeim areas. They vary a lot. Ours is rubbish and doesn't like to spend a dirham if he can get away with it! The agents tend to know which are the compounds with good maintenance, so just make sure to ask the question. where are these magical knowledgeable agents of which you speak? i've yet to encounter one...

good on email or not - the best thing to do is check them out in person. we seriously visited around 20 nurseries before we picked one - we went to many highly rated, highly decorated/awarded nurseries that got rave reviews and were absolutely APPALLED by the state of things. chaos, confusion, poor teaching quality. fancy facilities does not a good nursery make. we enrolled our LO in the only one we personally felt comfortable with. even though its like a 35 minute drive from my house, i decided my peace of mind and comfort (and that of my LO) was most important. no matter what people say (or don't say) your opinion and gut feeling is most important. go with that.

Hi Sedai, sorry to hear about the difficulties your child has been facing in school, but glad that you have found such excellent professional help. i don't have any guidance to offer, but can suggest a search on facebook for groups? also perhaps asking your doctor or therapist about any recommendations might yield some positive feedback. good luck to you!

we got ours at jashanmal i think at dubai outlet mall -- its a black kipling diaper bag -- doesn't look like a frumpy diaper bag, and can/does take so much abuse. its super stylish, and has a diaper changing pad and insulating bag and insert that comes with it. it was expensive but so worth it (and at outlet mall we got great discount) i love this bag! the best thing about it is that we can use it for travel as a regular travel bag after we're done having kids.

doctors love c sections here -- doesn't mean you have to. see as many doctors you need to before you find one you feel comfortable with. you are your biggest advocate! don't let anyone bully you into a birth experience you don't want/don't need until the time comes and a c section is medically necessary. good luck!

i flew home at 33 weeks to deliver my son (to NY - a 14 hour flight!!) and man did it suck. hopefully your travel goes smoother and quicker than mine did (felt like i was sitting on the plane for eternity!) i had a letter from my doctor and everything - but remember it is to the discretion of the airline to let you on board despite having all the clearances. i would say look as healthy and fit and not ready to deliver as possible when boarding lol. good luck!

the biggest thing is to find a doctor you're comfortable with, and then find out where he/she delivers and do a tour of the facilities to make sure you're familiar and comfortable. many doctors deliver at a few places so you have options. follow you're gut when you make a decision about the doctor and about the hospital. it's not just the doctor doing the delivery you have to consider but the quality of the pediatrics department for your baby once they're born.

first - congrats on your pregnancy! secondly - find another doctor, FAST. when i first found out i was pregnant i went to her at welcare hospital - and she was an absolute abomination. horrible bedside manner, not even knowledgeable about her own "specialty" and offered no useful advice to a first time mom. she didn't even know if i was "pregnant" or not and scared me half to death doing all these random tests to test hcg levels and saying mine was too low and the pregnancy was not clearly viable. wtf? i have a 1 yr old son now so she can suck it. needless to say, i switched doctors, and suggest you do the same. she is a total imbecile. NOTE: i do not usually leave such impassioned posts, but seriously, shes totally incompetent and you need to find another doctor. i now go to dr. josza who is excellent.

N2016 You are welcome. It's a very difficult decision to make from afar! But having all your children in one school is a big advantage - and yours are luckily the right age group! I also have children in the Junior school and would recommend the school as a whole without hesitation. You will also possibly find some negative stuff being said about the school (and some seem pretty fired up about it!) - all I guess before our time here - and with a school of this size, that grew quickly, and in this region with a range of expectations of what a school should deliver, it was never going to please every student and every set of parents. I feel it has been through it's 'teething period' and it is delivering a good education to my children. The IB Programme has been showing better and better results year on year and they seem very committed to this trend continuing. As regards 'compounds' - I presume you mean housing developments :-). Villa developments close by would be Silicon Oasis (look at Cedre Villas) , The Villa, Falcon City, Al Barari and Arabian Ranches or Victory Heights also not a long commute. Mirdif in the other direction also not far and has more standalone villas. goodytwoshoes - would be interested to know - how heavily is technology integrated into your daughter's daily learning? is she still taking notes in a notebook? writing things out? is homework done on paper or online? do you know anything regarding the older kids in this matter? maybe i'm old school, but i've noticed much to my dismay that kids here are doing all/most of their work on laptops and tablets. while this is okay for some, it's not something i'd prefer, or at least i'd like as little of it as possible, and more emphasis on pen and paper. maybe i'm crazy? beeniedubai - I don't think it's integrated a lot in her daily learning. She still takes notes in a notebook, she still writes most of her homework exercises. Some are done online on programs like myimaths but mostly she writes. Unless it's a technology related subject such as ICT of course. She doesn't bring a laptop or tablet to school. Some things, like projects, she will write or draw, or sometimes, as a personal preference, prepare on Powerpoint. She has a revision folder that she's using at the moment and it's all hand taken notes. Not sure about the older kids, am sure it's throughout the school though. Hope this helps. very helpful indeed - thank you for responding with your feedback. we're considering schools for the little one (primary school) but most schools are way too focused on electronics and electronic learning over "traditional" learning, and i'm simply not comfortable with that, nor do i believe it's beneficial (outside of an ICT course or as an additional learning resource at home). i appreciate you getting back to me!

you can buy the depo at a pharmacy (no prescription....) for 12.50. you can call up your clinic and have the nurse inject you - mine did it for free. a word to the wise: depo definitely is not for everyone - and if you're thinking of conceiving after coming off depo, keep in mind it could take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years for your body to return to pre-depo condition (fertility wise) while it is SUPER annoying, take the birth control pill if you can (i hate it, cuz i can never remember it) or opt for an IUD. good luck.

i struggled the most with creams/shampoos/lotions for the LO - for example things like aquaphor are not available here! also, we use alot of organic lotions/soaps/oils that aren't readily found here (if at all) so we buy them in bulk every time we go back home. definitely books- clothes if you know where to look , you can get them here for a fair price (although it will still be more expensive than back home) if your toddler has any particular attachment to certain spoons/cups/bottles/sippies/utensils i'd suggest getting those in bulk as well. also, strangely enough, good bedding. like high thread count super soft super awesome sheets for your bed and for the LO. the ones you do find here are exorbitantly priced and not as good as any of the stuff you'd get at marshall's, tj maxx, macys, etc

Did he have proper ID? This happened some years ago when we still lived in Dubai and it was above board then. The guy did show (what my husband and I took to be) genuine photo ID and also showed us a printed sheet on which the questions were printed. The questions we were asked sound pretty much exactly the same as those you mention. that does provide some measure of comfort -- i wonder is there not a less creepy way of conducting an in person census!?

rpsdubai is a newly opened primary school with an early years nursery in the new part of Arabian Ranches. Have you tried there? It's very new. If there is nothing available within Arabian Ranches itself, look at nurseries and schools in nearby Motorcity, sports city or studio city? For example, Building Blocks Nursery, Emirates British Nursery or Wonder Years Nursery. Seashells Nursery in Al Barsha also has an excellent reputation. If you are looking at British curriculum schools, perhaps try Gems Metropole in Motorcity, Nord Anglia on Hessa Street, Al Safa Community School Al Barsha or Kings Al Barsha on Um Suqueim, Victory Heights Primary in Sports City. These are all within reasonable distance of Arabian Ranches. Good luck, it's a stressful time trying to get your kids into a school your happy with. You DD is still quite young so you have time to get here and have a good look around to decide which ones you want to pay money to get on a waiting list for. Instead of a scatter gun approach, go for the ones you are keen on until you have the opportunity to visit them. Also people move all the time so spaces do crop up. Once you are accepted into a school, keep on the waiting list of any other schools you really want to get into as spaces do come up from time to time and make sure you go visit them so they know you are still keen. We moved from one school to my first choice within a few months but we were particularly lucky. i don't know about the other nurseries mentioned, but wonder years nursery is a feeder nursery for Victory heights school- which is pretty popular. if you're worried about school placements (which you should be, because this is Dubai after all) it might behoove you to check them out. Wonder years and Victory heights are both close by to you in the ranches. good luck!

i personally don't know anything about this nursery - although have heard of it and read generally positive things about it. don't be disheartened if your neighbors have their kids in different nurseries - this could be for many different reasons. some people have kids in nurseries close by to their places of work, or need a nursery with certain timings, others want it for their education style/atmosphere/fit. check out the nursery yourself. go a few times - on different days at different times over a few weeks to observe all the staff and students in different scenarios. go with your gut feeling.

If children are working ahead and are academically strong, why are they in tutoring? If results are being gained from outside tutors, then how can that be an accurate reflection? Why tutor a child who is academically strong and ahead? If academically rigorous work is being given out and yet tutoring is still taking place, how does that help a student? What does a year ahead mean if in order to achieve that, you have to seek tutoring from outside the school? countess, i think you need to get a better handle on why parents send their kids to tutoring in this country and why there is such a culture of tutoring here: not every child who goes to tutoring goes because they are struggling. It's true! Parents in Dubai send their kids to tutors because they feel insecure about what they themselves managed to accomplish and are living through their children. Plus, it keeps kids busy when parents are hung over from the night before. LOL !

OP- welcome to Dubai ! It is certainly a harrowing decision to be made, even more so from afar. Props to you! Nord Anglia has gotten so many fabulous reviews from many parents. I personally tutor many children that go there, and they are unequivocally bright eyed, bushy-tailed and excited to learn. they are also writing things down on pen and paper, which is refreshing since alot of schools have kids just doing things on laptops and ipads. I also personally tutor alot of children from Repton. They are less bright-eyed and bushy tailed than the students i teach from Nord, but it could just be because my Repton students are much older, and my students from Nord are younger. Regardless, the students from Repton are doing work that is also quite academically rigorous - i was impressed/surprised. i would say they are definitely ahead of their year. they are also not heavily focused on technology, and writing and learning and note taking "the old fashioned way" is still quite emphasized. aside from that - if you're thinking of putting your younger 2 at Nord and the older one at Repton, keep in mind that they are on the opposite ends of town (pretty much) and that school runs would be disastrous. as someone else mentioned, traffic is an absolute nightmare. if you can keep them all in one place, or at least very close to each other, it would DEFINITELY be a huge help for you. good luck!

big blue - your honest insights are greatly appreciated. you and i had discussed BELC a few months back and i had gone to see it based on your recommendations. it was total chaos when i went (which is not okay when there are so many little children there) and several people gave me different answers to different questions i had. the facilities are nice, but it came off as a very hectic and haphazard environment, and there didn't seem to be any clear or consistent communication among the staff. i wanted to send the LO there because it was so close to us and was hoping it would be a good option near home, but after my experience we have decided to enroll him at Little Land in Umm Suqueim - which was our first choice, just quite a trek from Silicon Oasis. I wish you the best of luck for the rest of the year and hope that you are at least able to ride the remainder of the term out with some comfort.
