We had a surfing lesson at the beach for my son's 8th birthday. They provide the boards and a party tent/tables. We brought snacks drinks and cake. It was amazing! http://www.surfingdubai.com/surf-lessons.php

Had my 4th baby in Dubai and refused the BCG. Was totally fine, no one ever said anything about it. Not at the hospital, not when getting her birth certificate, not when applying for her visa, not at school.

Bianca, referring to the thread about names, I really like your name and also Chiara :D Thanks! Always thought it was quite common (there were 3 in each class when growing up) but it seems that it's considered 'unusual and nice' outside my country...

Not sure about that; just looked up 'results clearblue' and some of the test should show a +. A - means negative. It all depends on what kind of test this is... But if it should be a - for positive and you did see a very faint line, than that should mean you are pregnant!

So there were two windows, one had a very clear line and the other a very light line? ETA; is this the clearblue test that shows a + when it's positive and a - when negative or should it just show a line when positive? <em>edited by Bianca72 on 03/09/2011</em>

Hi Kesha, I don't think the nannies as we know them in the Western world are very common in Dubai. Lots of people just hire a maid/nanny which could work out fine. Just try finding someone that loves children and maybe has a degree or experience in child care. For example, I saw a lady in the classifieds who has worked at a nursery. I would also agree on a few days trial so you can watch her interact with your kids... And make sure her English is good. We have been very lucky with our maid, she is fantastic with the kids (and we were not even looking for a nanny) and I trust her completely with them. HTH

We just had a nice little ceremony. We all gave him a last hug, dh dug a hole in our backyard and we put lots of flowers on top of him. It was a very new and difficult experience for our family (first animal that died since we have kids) with questions like; but how will he breathe under the ground and how can he walk on the clouds... Sad and funny at the same time. Just part of life, I guess. I wanted to thank you all again for your sweet words and support...

Thank you all for your kind words, they made me cry. We just came back from the vet where we decided to put him to sleep. Like several of you already mentioned, the vet said that he was probably too old to get over this, he was too weak to even eat. Feel so sad and terrible for making such a decision about a life. But deep down I know it is for the best although it really hurts right now. RIP Sammy (1/7/1994-26/8/2011), we love you...

Not sure what the dhs 12.500 is for and maybe it has something to do with flying to AUS but I have never paid more than dhs 2000 for my cat (that includes everything) and he has traveled with us to 3 continents, 4 countries... But I did all paperwork/vet visits/flight bookings myself.

I just had a closer look at mine, and it seems like the netting is held in place in the frame with some sort of rubber tubing... was yours like this? I'm scared to rip it out in case I won't be able to find the tubing anywhere! I did it myself too (bought the netting at Ace) and used the same tubing that was already in. Just pull it out, put the new netting on (don't cut it), put the tubing back in (use a small screw driver or something like that) and then cut it. Thanks. I can't get the door off the hinges though so I'll have to try doing it while the door's still upright. Did you manage to get yours off? Yes, I did but it wasn't easy. I took out some of the screws so the frame parts could move a little.

Go to the beach early morning, collect loads of shells and in the afternoon, let them decorate a cardboard picture frame (cut out from an old box). Then give them a pile of pictures and let them choose one to put inside. Keeps them occupied the whole day. Also goes with leaves/stones/flowers/beads and little cardboard boxes/flower pots. My (4) kids love those arts and craft projects they sell at Park and Shop. They are not that expensive (around dhs 25) and it keeps them busy for ages. Let each of them pick a new dvd. Great fun buying them and keeps them busy a few hours. Have a dress up/fashion show. Play hide and seek. Mine love treasure hunts (I hide pieces of paper with clues and assignments). The treasure is a small (but exciting) present, like a chocolate egg or cotton candy... HTH

Antibiotics are given to treat bacterial infections, not viral infections. I assume the dr wanted to wait 24 hours to see if any symptoms of a viral infection would show up (which might be the eye discharge, see: Nasopharyngitis) and if not, to give him the antibiotics to treat the fever as a bacterial infection... I think.

If you can't find it anywhere, maybe ask the Park and Shop owner to order it (apparently he is Dutch, hence the frikandellen and kroketten). Or use an online store like www.boodschappenuitholland.nl (will be expensive though...).

Tip for the toys; take a long piece of rope and attach ALL toys to it. On the plane, attach the rope to the seat (you will go crazy picking up toys/trying to find them under the seats every 5 seconds for 11 hours!!!) ETA; buy loads of cheap small toys; new ones are much more exciting (will keep him busy longer) than his own 'old, boring' toys... <em>edited by Bianca72 on 13/07/2011</em>

Would you read this "1,650 million" as one point six-five million or one thousand, six hundred and fifty million? Emirates...the emirate of Dubai...capital or lower case 'e'? 200 dirhams, AED 200 or Dhs 200 which is considered correct please? Thank you for now, there may be more to follow :) - It's one point six-five million (one thousand million would be 1 billion). - emirate, I think... (except when used in United Arab Emirates, as in United States of America) - I think AED is the official way but dhs would be correct too (in unofficial conversation) HTH

Hi KT. Monovision is not a different technique, it can be done with any of the laser treatments. It is meant for people around or over 40 and is used to avoid the need of reading glasses. Read the following link, it explains it all... HTH http://www.usaeyes.org/lasik/faq/lasik-monovision.htm

You have 2 options; you can send her away, then arrange her visa, send it to her and let her come back OR have her visa made first, then send her on a return flight. Second option is more expensive (it's called in country visa) but much more convenient for the maid. It sometimes happens that maids are stuck in Kish (or anywhere else) for days or weeks because the visa procedure takes longer than expected or because they can not find a seat on a plane. I know maids who went to Kish recently so unless the rules changes, Kish is an (easy; no visa required for Iran) option.

We just moved and that was a great opportunity to change our interior drastically. We went from natural (dark wood, whites, oranges) to a vintage dark purple/dirty pink/turquoise/wine red color scheme. I bought 8 dining chairs in these 4 colors (2 each), had my sofa/chair refurbished to dark purple, painted one wall pink, bought a dark red rug and added some decorative stuff in all 4 colors. Love it!

if it's to look after ur baby, why not having your little one at the nursery all day, some of them open around 7.30am and close at 6pm? that's what I'm planning to do, just like back home, no maids. just a suggestion thanks Pepito bit I have a 5 yr old and a 3 yr old. School only goes to 4 at the latest (with after school club) and then i have the worry of holidays, half term and sickness! Oh sorry didnt know that! maybe u can have a look at ads, I think I've seen it in EW classified, some nannies do look for part time work, and they're under their husband visa, so no hassle with the sponsorship good luck pretty sure this is illegal pepito? Can anyone clarify? Yes, illegal!

Would hiring a live IN be an option? If you hire someone on a transferable visa (not visit or tourist; more expensive) and you pay her dhs 1500 a month (maybe give her 2 days off), it would cost you around dhs 2200 a month... visa dhs 5000 salary dhs 18000 flight home/extra month dhs 3000 total dhs 26000 a year ETA; sorry, just saw Anon's post. Don't know what the reason is for not wanting a live in but maybe time to reconsider... We had one and she was very pleasant to have around. 'Invisible', always happy and friendly and very integer... <em>edited by Bianca72 on 19/06/2011</em>

I really like Kids Corner at Festival City. It has lots of things to do for older ones and also a huge part for the tiny ones. Not too expensive. There's a staff member at the door at all times and the kids are not allowed to leave by themselves. My kids are older so I put them in there when I have to do some shopping (because that would be a nightmare with 4...).

SA_Babe, yes i have children, two in fact. A 3 year old and a 6month old. I take them both there regulary, play with them, go with them everywhere there bathrooms, play area and all. My point is is that, we have to be vigilant as parents and not blame a particular establishment for trying to run a business. \ The back door has always been closed and locked everytime i have been there, yes people walk in and out, again i am with my children so dont see it as a problem. No i dont think that the stories in the paper about rape and abuse are false, however do we need to prosecute every man that we come in contact with because of these awful things that happen. They happen in other countries too, not just Dubai! I agree as parents we have to protect our precious babies, but again at what point does it stop??? Do we not allowed men into the play area with there children as there are areas in there that cant be seen? Or not let men into the whole play centre at all??? These men that were there, werent threatening, talking, approaching, or taking pictures of these children so why not leave them be and let them have there coffee in peace???? Bath, bed routine has began ill leave it at that. Each to there own! Totally agree! Yes, awful things happen but it should not have this kind of impact on our everyday live. Just keep an eye on your kids, there is not much more you can do (or prevent). ETA without it getting ridiculous... <em>edited by Bianca72 on 31/05/2011</em>

I thought Dubai was a lot to take... Until we moved to India a couple of weeks ago. We ordered a stainless steel dishwasher but a few weeks ago they delivered a white one. All other appliances are stainless steel so I really want the dishwasher to be the same. So I called the supplier to ask them to exchange it for the one we actually ordered. 'Sorry but we have a no return policy'. End of story.

My ds, who is 8, just got his own laptop a few weeks ago. The Crystal House at Al Hana Center is fabulous! They have loads of the 'real stuff' and can order anything you like but also stock hundreds of different beads in any size, color and shape. And very cheap; I paid dhs 7 for 12 big (2cm) beads. Not crystal though. You really should go and have a look, they also have all the materials you need for making jewellery or anything really.
