OP I'm sorry you got told off, I know exactly how you feel, you are very correct, he zoomed in on me too. I hope you find a more comfortable shopping area. I have always thought they were worried about people taking up residence in there permanently if it became too comfortable such as having somewhere to sit down - "Keep it moving there!"

I am looking at cape town to spend our summer there which is almost 4 weeks. Anyone been there can share their experience ..traveling with kids! on the other hand we were also looking at Gold Coast, which one would be better to visit ….. If by "our summer" you mean July - Cape can be very cold with snow on mountain tops!

Thanks again Viccy for your post - interesting information - have also been reading up online. The "new" residence visas with the property purchases of $400,000 or more are restricted to new properties on the new developments it seems - which look lovely. But I wonder about resales, whether they hold their value. I do hope to visit the north of the island but am off to UK tomorrow!

Hello! My husband, two boys (11/12) and I will move to Dubai in August from Turkey. We just found out about my husband's job transfer and everything is moving fast. I'm feeling a lot of pressure to get everything in order. This forum has been a great help and so many questions have already been answered. My question is for myself. I have been teaching ESL in a Turkish primary school for the past 7 years. I have a BA in English and a TEFL cert. I'm American but I don't have a license from the states. Where can I begin to look for a job and can I expect to find something similar to what I was doing in Turkey? Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions. See thread "Visiting Dubai/possibly looking to stay" - last post 01/06/15 - might help!

Thanks viccy for the very interesting information. It does sound like a great place to move to. I've not been to the north of the island. Is enterprise by non-locals encouraged/allowed in Mauritius? Are there a lot of regulations such as having to employ a certain number of "locals"? I.ve heard it's not that easy to import goods there - say for a retail business etc? I've have tried "reading up" on these matters.

Do they take 2 year olds on the school buses? A bit too young for a 2 year old to travel alone on any bus! Never mind the worry about accidents! Was it only last year an older child fell asleep on a bus and DIED from heat exposure because he/she was locked in until home time?! That has happened more than once!!

Hello I have lived in the Greens/Views for 3 years In my last apartment I had a ground floor apartment with a very large terrace which at first seemed like a great idea but in reality I rarely utilized it and being on the ground floor the amount of cigarette ends/rubbish and even a half eaten burger that was launched off higher balconies put me off for life. If you don't mind that happening then go for it. They aren't the easiest to find as they are in demand but they do come up every now and then. They are also usually more expensive than their smaller balcony couterparts on higher floors. You may also find some ground floor apartments that face the street/community not pool that have the regular size balcony but you will have to ask the real estate agents as they don't advertise which floor the apartments are on propertyfinder.ae and justrentals.com are a good place to start Sarahlou - you must complain about having things thrown off balconies in your building - Emaar is very strict about that -. In one building someone had a fire from a cigarette being thrown from a flat above.

Can confirm what Blue said. Be aware that teachers salaries are low in Dubai and many schools have constant turn over of people leaving. They do not seem to be highly "rated" generally. Also beware - hot summer temperatures!

Just to add - while driving in Italy be very careful - about 2 years ago my daughter who is based in Antibes was driving in northern Italy - she went to the boat shows there for business and was pulled over by someone fully dressed as police man but he was actually an Eastern European criminal! She was driving a very modest small work van with French plates i.e. - was looking poor!. He took all their money, phones and threw the keys into the bushes - which luckily they managed to find. He told them he was being kind to them!! No-one helped them. They went to the Italian police who said it was quite common. She has not gone back since!

Me and hubby are planning to drive through France to Italy in September. Can anyone recommend charming small hotel or good quality B&B in Provence region with good views for one or two nights? Be very sure to book your place to stay in advance. This area and Cote d'Azur has surprisingly few places one can just "drop in" to stay the night. I have had that experience twice - once driving to Antibes from Geneva and again London to south of France. We ended up miles out of our way looking for some where to stay!

Will you have it put down before it gets too hot and/or you go away for the summer? There used to be a very active lady on EW who worked at an animal shelter.

You should probably see an accountant for advice in UK when you get back. I think HMRC may need to be informed you have returned to UK and they may/may not ask details about the money you send into UK. However,it might not be advisable to place it "off- shore" permanently.

If you want Switzerland - consider Villar-sur-Ollons which is a ski resort but also has a (sloping!) golf course - lots of walking etc. You can take train directly from Geneva airport to Aigle ( about 1hr 15mn) and then a taxi or small train up to Villar - or you can also go on to the next station - Bex which also has small trains to Villar. Just to add - if you want a taxi from the train station - get out of train quickly - or taxi(s) will be taken!

Just to add to my other post - I have ANOTHER child who was also persuaded to repeat a year at school - he is dyslexic but IQ assessed as high. He had poor short term memory and lacked concentration. But making him repeat a year was the worst thing for him - totally caused him to lose confidence. We were in awe of the teachers at the time and he also thought they must know best - but they didn't. I eventually sent him to a school that had a lot of sport. He got a B.Sc. Degree - not a very good one but has managed to carry on with education and has a Masters from London Business School and works a 12 -14 hour day and has a 6 figure salary! edited by bingo12 on 07/05/2015

Every child is different, ditto generally every teacher and school. Have you thought of having his IQ independently tested? If his IQ is average or above and he does not have any learning difficulties there should be no justification for making him repeat a year. In any case it is better to have extra help with any learning problems rather than repeating a class unless he is young. I am very much against holding children back - I think it is bad for their self confidence. I have a child who was told three times to repeat a class ( she had health problems) - she had her IQ tested at various times and was always rated a little above average ( although the schools said these fee paid testers don't usually tell your child has a low IQ unless it's something drastically wrong!). The first time I agreed for her to repeat the class as she was young but the other times I refused and had to move her to other schools. She eventually got an Honours Degree in French and Business Studies and is having a reasonably successful life. Repeating may actually make a sensitive child less able. edited by bingo12 on 07/05/2015 edited by bingo12 on 07/05/2015

Ok... just when i finally pulled myself up to start exercising... i missed my period... I am 5 days up, and I am almost never a day late... now I am worried if I am pregnant and might miscarry if I continue the workout... as for preg tests... i was checking online blogs and many say it was negative when tested so early and they found out that thy were pregnant later... so what if the same happens to me and I keep exercising and lose my pregnancy .. my DD is almost 5 now and we really wanna have a baby asap... what shall i do ?? .... :( Better safe than sorry! Although preg. women go jogging etc I did know a girl years ago who insisted on sport during her first pregnancy against her mother's advice and had a miscarriage while playing tennis - so we were told. Nor only that she had to have a hysterectomy as well. I'm not saying it was all caused by tennis, of course.

We're in the process of doing this at the moment (probably for the same reasons you are!) and we're using Talbot Surveyors in North London. Our experience has been good so far. FFx I also used Talbot Surveyors for a valuation for a lease extension of a flat - I think the guy's name was Andrew. He did come with his mother but I think he did a good job and was helpful. That was in 2011 for property in W2. You can also find someone in your post code by looking at the RICS web site.

Cheese "straws" variation - use 2 sheets bought puff pastry. Brush one sheet with sweet chilli sauce spread thinly, sprinkle over grated cheese. Place other sheet of pastry over.filling- cut both sheets together into strips to make "straws". Press 2 sides of strips together so filling doesn't come out. Twist the strips into curls. Bake moderately hot over for 10-15 mins.

Having an address in the UK is not the only criteria though, you need to be resident in the UK to appy for a licence there. Non residents are not actually permitted to apply or renew a licence even if they have a UK address. The application cannot be done from abroad anyway neither online or by post, the only way you could apply would be to have someone get a form for you, send it to you to sign and they post it from their address for you, that's technically illegal and I would not risk it. However, one can now be regarded as "resident" in UK for tax purposes if one spends 45 days a year there and even fewer day I understand. I guess if you have to pay tax there they can give you a driving licence..

Certainly not new in most parts of the world - for many years. However in England ( but I understand not in Scotland) with recent £ 9,000 p.a. university tuition fees, fewer people there are willing to take on the debt this entails - but don't know what numbers are involved. .Also there are so many more degrees offered in "newish" subjects than ever before.so presumably employers ask for these qualifications in the relevant fields.

OP, before you start panicking, of course there are dryers here. You don't need one and in the warmer months clothes dry quicker outside than in a dryer but plenty of people still have them. I dry clothes outside but bed linen and towels in our dryer. We plan on bringing our washer and dryer with us. I have 3 kids and a husband! No way in the world I'm hang drying clothes. You should see how crazy dirty my house is WITH a HIGH CAPACITY washer and dryer - much less NO dryer! lol. I loathe laundry. A maid is sounding better every day! You don't need to bring your washer and dryer here! I have a washer dryer in one machine bought in first place I looked at - Carrefour supermarket! The electric sockets are "English" type. I never use the dryer part of the machine - because weather is so hot most of time you don't want more added heat to your house and electricity is expensive!

Hi - I'm pretty sure that the issue here is bed bugs which are really common in the UAE, especially in high rise apartment blocks. I had an issue with these a couple of years back so did a huge amount of research into these - they were a nightmare to get rid of and eventually had to get pest control in twice to resolve the issue completely. They can be passed via clothing, communal AC vents, suitcases, neighbouring apartments and their preferred habitat is sofas, matresses and soft furnishings. They can be difficult to detect as they embed themselves deep within these furnishings where they lay eggs - they tend to be noctural so typically come out in the dark and when it gets cooler in the evenings. They live exclusively off human blood and usually during the night but you can rarely feel them biting. No serious health issues to worry about for your young one - mainly mild rashes and some itching. But I'd try and deal with the issue early as they are very resilient creatures and can live up to 18 months without feeding off any blood. Also they are rampant at breeding - one pregnant bed bug and spawn up to 5000 bed bugs in the space of a 6 month period and you may have to discard furnishings if they become too heavily infested with these bugs / eggs. If it is bed bugs, try taking your matress off the bed frame and try to give the bedframe a good shake, you should see some bugs hit the floor - they are about 2 or 3mm long - and a red / brown colour. Yes most likely - the dreaded bed bugs!

A warning about this operation - you can completely lose your sense of smell from it. My daughter also had it done twice - once on NHS because she had breathing difficulties and then again in France. The first op. left her nose very crooked - the second done in Antibes to correct this - left her without being able to smell. Of course, smell also affects one's ability to taste food. I told her to sue the second doctor but she never did. .A minor point - the bottom of her nose was cut between nostrils - leaving a small scar.

Sorry to hear of your situation. The agent should have had proof of the maintenance payments being up to date - but that does not mean future maintenance payments are always paid in time by landlords. Have you been to the Emaar offices to clarify why they are doing this etc? Who is it exactly locking you out - the Security man or the Concierge or someone from Emaar Admin. itself? There is an Emaar office on the ground floor of the Links building which is opposite Golf Towers 2 - they try to be helpful. Can you ask Emaar for the property owner's contact details - they will have it so you can try to phone him as your landlord? He may not be aware he owes the money if he lives overseas. You can also find out how much money is owing etc. I think Emaar must know the law in this matter - it might be a mistake.

Scissors! Honestly - I have spent a fortune on my curly hair ( went to Daniel Galvin for years in London) - now I just keep it short, very short - but as it is quite thick it has good "height" - which suits most faces.. Also you can cut it yourself - the curls "hide" any bad cut - or just cut the bad bits off - so liberating!!

If you are complaining a lot then that must tell you that the nursery is just not suitable.. Upsetting to move LO, but in the long term she will be much better off. I absolutely agree - the teacher was outrageous to say those things to you. You will never have any peace of mind with this nursery now. Although Director said the "right things" to you she clearly does not have satisfactory communication with her staff or discipline of them - as they feel free to open their mouth and spout anything that come into their mind to a worried parent about a little child. What could be worse - child abuse? As for the "thumbs down" - just ignore them. Your child will probably be just as happy elsewhere.
