I've used Avenue Windows Fashions - have a good show room in Al Quoz - 043408955. They were good enough to come back after a few years to repair a blind cord.

I would just say - if you have never experience that sort of heat it can come as a big shock! Walking outside can feel like drudging through hot cotton wool as you have high humidity too!

Thinking of Andorra at the moment - a very healthy place they say! Lots of ski-ing - 200km from Barcelona and south of France. Low tax (the whole rest of Europe will be taxing bicycles etc. very soon!), very safe and some nice looking properties too. Also there is Air Andorra - trying to get off the ground but not quite managed it yet! It may be boring though.

I steer clear of my DIL as much as possible. She made me cry when I brought a bottle of Ribena for the grandchildren - harmless enough I hear you say?! She shouted at me "I don't like Ribena! I don't want Ribena!"

Can I just say - everyone get a flu' jab. Used to get very sick after flying but not at all since having flu' jab every year - so far! I understand the flu jab is just for influenza but have you noticed you have less colds and chest infections too? I've had the jab 3 times now and had no cold at all and hardly any cough - I do tend towards asthma though. Even the last jab has worked so far although there was news that it was not right for the latest and strongest flu' in Far East. I think it may not work 100% for everyone but worth a try.

The trouble with these nest eggs one tries to build up in private pensions is one saves for years but in the end even if you have a decent amount the actual income derived can be very low at the moment. And the performance and annual fees vary. Say you save £100,000 by the time you stop working - that may give you an annuity of only about £4000 a year and even less if you take the 25% lump sum that is allowed - or am I mistaken?

If the buyer is paying cash and there is no mortgage - perhaps the buyer would want to use a solicitor. If selling to a cash buyer would both parties go to the Land Dept or somewhere like that? I used a solicitor when I bought an Emaar resale - the sale took place at the Emaar office. The solicitor's fees were very high but it gave me assurance. But if I sell would try to avoid solicitor's fees.

Thanks - did look at the Dubai Courts web site as the Consulate referred me to it but it does say ( checked today) in FAQ they only deal with documents in Arabic and not English. I'm only posting this saga for others to know as sometimes one doesn't always for much time to do these things if docs. need to be sent abroad..

Up date - the British Consulate will NOT witness a signature on a document even though they actually have a page of charges with the heading British Embassy UAE Consular Fees February 2015 - item 5 Witnessing a signature GBP20 AED115. So will be going to solicitor.

Don't forget insurance valuations and a jeweller's estimated value are higher than what you would actually get for that piece of jewellery should you need/want to resell it privately, to a jeweller or at auction and you will pay a higher insurance premium for that higher value.

Yes - I am now onto lawyers - Yamalova want AED2000 to witness one signature I was told when I phoned. Am also asking Davidson solicitors. Have had to scan copy of the page I want to have my signature witnessed first and send it to them in email. Am waiting for reply. (Only going on with this boring thread so everyone can realise what a pain it is to get something like this done!). A chartered accountant is not on the list of who can sign.

Thanks for the advice. I have not heard back from Emeril yet. I have tried something similar to what you describe but with it being a sliding door - after a while the stuck-on foam rubber tape comes loose. It's actually worse now than ever as the original "wadding" that was in the door 's frame where the sliding door went in - has now perished and drops off in clumps!

Just to add - studied the British Consulate web site and sent email asking for an appointment and got back automatic reply saying they are very busy and check with the web site first - which I had done. It also said - once I had done that - could then email again using heading "second request". Did that and got back message that I would get an answer usually within 5 days! Can't wait for that!

As I did not hear of anyone - I phoned Emeril who do maintenance repairs etc. for people in Emaar buildings. I think they may have a sub contractor who does this sort of thing. Anyway someone will look at the job perhaps tomorrow. Will post any more news.

Well - been to my bank this morning and was told they would not witness my signature on a form. I was actually told "Banks in Dubai do not do this" today but Barclays did it once or twice -authenticating copy of my Passport. When they closed I went to NBAD - who are quite good but won't do this. So now looks like I must make consulate appointment and pay AED175 for the service!

Word of caution about 2 years ago(?) one of these discount money transfer companies went bankrupt - it was in the papers but did not pay it much attention, just wondered how a money transfer company could go bankrupt though - leaving people whose money they held at that time in serious difficulties. I suppose it can happen if they do currency exchange as well.

Hi - need to get my signature witnessed on an English language form. I see the British Embassy, from its web site charge quite a lot for that and I think one also needs to make an appointment first too - plus the fag of getting down there! Hope my bank will do it tomorrow - is that a waste of time? Thx.

What will make it easier - 1. living in "New Dubai" areas - nearer to Abu Dhabi and close to direct route 2. if he is young, fit and strong 3. If he can share some of the driving with others and even take a taxi sometimes 4. not too many foggy days - the worst I think for this commute. edited by bingo12 on 26/02/2015

FWIW - in UK you can buy blinds with cords that are supposed to break in the event of a child strangling themselves in it - to release them. Perhaps you can get those same cords in Dubai. I do not know why you got thumbs down for this question as several children in UK have died from this problem.

Your building's management will clean the outside window in high rises but not those onto balconies. They should do that every 2 months at least. Mostly exterior windows on high rises can only be cleaned with special cradles and work men specialized in doing that.

They were not well rated on EW a long time ago. Do you not have a "building owner/management company" like Emaar that have their maintenance company like Emeril? - which I am not recommending but who can get job done for less I should think. Actually I think Emaar will also give some other names for jobs like this.

There is no problem being Jewish in the GCC. Would I go around telling every Tom, D!ck and Harry? No. To me religion is personal and no one else's business. I have worked with several Jewish people - the only hiccup they have faced to my knowledge is that sometimes they have had to complete documents which asked about religion. Some have fibbed and written Christian others have put Buddhist etc. Christians, Jews, and Muslims are all considered "people of the book" in Islam. You will not find any synagogues here. Also, if you have visited Israel and have a visa stamp in your passport, get a new one. It probably wouldn't be a problem but it might raise eyebrows or cause delays at immigration. edited by marycatherine on 25/01/2015 edited by marycatherine on 26/01/2015

Where prices have fallen in London according to a Chesterton's survey are Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster. These areas are very expensive - which have fallen back. The outer suburbs have generally continued to increase.

No one has mentioned there are some "do it yourself" web sites that you can list your property on such as Sarah Beeney's Tepilo, eMoov and Sellingmyhome.co.uk . They do not all list on the big portals such as Rightmove though. You need to have someone there at the property to view it. I think most people in Dubai looking to buy a property especially a resale in London probably do start with the likes of rightmove and primelocation - also zoopla. Don't forget that in London one can get completely priced out of the market in a few years should you ever wish to live there again.

Thanks so very much to everyone for your kind and helpful replies. I did see the baby yesterday via skype and she was quite cheerful and pleased to be chatted to - rocking herself in her bounsy chair! I could not see any eczema on her face or hands - all the rest of her body was covered. Her head seemed OK but she has very little hair. Her mother said she had been prescribed some homeopathic cream and told me some of the ingredients but I can only remember rose water - which I think is calming. I am going to see the baby tomorrow and have bought 3 tubes of E45 Itch Relief cream ( Urea Lauromacrogols) says - "Relief from itching of eczema" and is for everyone including babies - so hope it helps. Slakhana and Maple thanks very much for mentioning Stellatopia and Aveeno - will try to find them. Thanks again to everyone

Congratulations on your engagement Sadly I don’t think you are going to find all of your wishes -a beautiful country/manor house -grounds with gardens and a preferably a lake -tables for a lunch or dinner -all within your budget around £20 a head and no more than £50 I think what you and your fiancé need to do is to sit down and decide how to prioritize your spending on what elements of the day are most important to you: -is it necessary to invite 100 people? – this is a big cost. Many people do not invite children to weddings (although this can be cultural). Or could you have a meal with the wedding party only and then an evening reception/party at someone’s home or a hall. -If the venue is most important to you would you be prepared to compromise on food and just serve canapés (like Will and Kate) or afternoon tea? Remember that the priced menus are just the start and often there are service, drinks and cake charges on top. -are you flexible on dates? Midweek in November/February could be cheaper than peak summer Friday-Sunday weddings for a smaller hotel. Some smaller village hotels and country Inns might offer a good price if you keep things very simple -many people have mentioned church and community halls – if you find one in a pretty village many have gardens (although they may lack the grandeur of a country house). You could get caterers to provide food and buy your own drinks – or perhaps you have relatives that could help out making food. My cousin did her wedding as a pot-luck supper in a village hall. The downside is that saving the money on paid staff means you have to organize your own set-up, clean up and wash-up. -or have a smaller wedding here in Dubai and then a party in the UK - could you rent a country cottage or use someone's home? Good luck with your wedding planning I think if you rent someone else's "country cottage" you need their permission first! I was once asked to do this by family friend and was worried about whether the French plumbing would stand up to the occasion - so I asked for E1,000 for the event. They went elsewhere!

Kensington Roof Gardens - have you ever been there? - really lovely. So central and easy to get to. It does wedding ceremonies and food in package of £75 per person also quoting £55 per person for food and £22 for house wine. These prices show in Brides Magazine 2012. See www.roofgardens.virgin.com . There is an indoor area but the gardens - 1 1/2 acres are the thing - of course if it rains.... but that applies to any outdoor venue. Perhaps some guest wouldn't mind paying for themselves?!

Congratulations - hope you will be very happy! I second what daffers said - take a look at www.hitched.co.uk/weddingplanner/london/ a helpful site. I also think you are underestimating the cost. No chance of any London friends ( who have had their own lavish weddings) hosting the meal for your guests at their homes - after your ceremony elsewhere? Kew looks quite nice for a wedding but don't know what the costs are.

Many thanks for the replies - tried it last night. I also found the small pad did not stay in place and the smell was rather strong! I used an elastoplast strip but I think that is wrong as they have little holes that allow the skin to breath and I think the point of duct tape is that it doesn't! Wart is killed off by not getting oxygen?! Will report on result if I carry on with it!

In some countries I think it has always been a bit of a shopping cultural tradition that you can "try before you buy" food such as fruit by tasting it first - whereas in others that is regarded as a "no no".
