I guess it's all depend on how old your kids are and what after school activities that they can go to on a daily basis until after your office hours. Like the other poster was saying, you could just hire a reliable lady driver to pick and drop you kids off but where would the driver drop them off? Some of the kids from DD previous nursery go back to the nursery after their school hours as they are too young to do any after school activities. My colleague has two kids and no maid. Her DH pick them from school and drop them off at home. The elder kid look after the younger one until my colleague go home.

Based on previous years, you could sort of guess depending on your industry. Banks usually wait for Central Bank to announce. Government would always be longer than private sectors. If Ramadan starts on 1st August, then eid would probably be either on 30th or 31st of August. Hence, I would think that government offices would probably close from 29th august to 1st sept (4 days) . For private.....depending on either 30th or 31st, I would say that the eid would stretch to 1st sept.

I'm sure that the London Paris nursery offers 2 languages as well and the Blossom Nursery has some lessons in another language. London Paris does alternate week....1 week english and the next week french. The teacher will speak or address the children only in the language of that week. DD couldn't speak much french as we don't speak french but she understood the teacher very well. A bit disappointed that she would not learn french in her current school till she is in year 5 :(

Well, most nurseries have summer camp but personally, I think it is more like a babysitting service especially for working moms. They hardly go outside as it's too hot. So, they usually do a lot of art and craft activities. Usually the nursery charges per day. I used to pay 200 per day for DD to stay at her nursery from 7.30am to 5.30pm in summer.

I love saucony and asics for running shoes. I use them for my exercise classes as well. I used NIKE cross trainer before.....great for body pump class but when I joined aerobic class, I felt pain on my heels and ankles. No problem with both saucony and asics shoes :)

Cyprus uses EURO and you can change AED directly to EURO here. As there are not that many Thais here, it's a bit difficult to find a place where you can do direct currency exchange from AED to Bath. That's why you have to change AED to USD first. I have that problem previously with Malaysian Ringgit and still have to go through the same (AED to USD to MYR) for telegraphic transfer :(

Omg!!! Forget it, I didn't post for any other reason than to keep kids safe. But people just can't see it. You shouldn't be too sensitive if some people debating this issue. Honestly, ever since I come to Dubai, I do wonder sometimes whether I have become too paranoid for my own good when it comes to men and children. In my country, there is no segregation between "bachelor" and "family" residential areas but here it seems a really big deal. It puzzled me a lot when I first come here as I kept on think....."so, where are the bachelors supposed to live?". I have not been inside MM, so I can't comment on the random ppl that could walk in and out of the area. Anyway, my point is, it's good to debate on stuff sometimes as not everything is black and white and different ppl do see things differently. And it's good to be able to agree to disagree ;) <em>edited by blimey on 29/05/2011</em>

Although I must have been lucky and had no real 'banking' issues with the bank Izzy99 mentioned, they are terribly irritating. I was getting at least 2 calls a day for over a week from them trying to get me to sign up to this and that. Obviously they were trying to get more money out of me. It got so bad I told them that if they didn't stop calling me daily I would report them to the police for harassment. Guess what - they haven't called since! Got 3 calls already so far from 3 different numbers!! Good thing, I have been keeping their numbers.....straight to busy tones ;)

People are quite insensitive and think nothing of asking when you'll be trying for another or stating as a matter of fact that the child needs a sibling. I get asked this all the time, even by people I've just met. I've had three pregnancy losses and everytime I get asked this, it still hurts. Why don't people think? We are grateful for our wonderful son, but still miss the ones who aren't here. It took us almost 6 years after marriage to finally conceive. Both DH and my own family never ask or say anything but relatives and even strangers.....they would ask or even make rude comments. I got ask whether DH and I actually doing "it", how wonderful DH must be as other man would have divorce me already, fertility expert recommendation, etc. I did get sad a lot during those time....but DH never really bother about it. He always say to me, if it's meant to be for us to have a child, we will have one. 5 months after our move to Dubai... wallah!! I guess that's why Dubai has been the longest place we have lived in since our marriage, 11 years ago. These days, I am very good at pressing IGNORE button ;)

"My other sadness is the wedding and my family who are so excited. Getting messages and calls and arrangements to discuss gifts, food, etc and I feel so much shame, and disappointment. [b'>They adore him and so I will be seen as being "difficult" for leaving.[/b'> Also, there is a lot of financial insecurity now as I lost my job and was being supported recently by him (hence moving in here) and not sure how I will cope. I will have to leave Dubai to find work, which is exciting in a way but financially very diffiuclt for me as well. Its very sad and painful. I realise that I have been ignoring things that other women would have noticed and refused to accept which makes me realise how much my own self esteem is tied into into this, although I do now feel that I deserve to be treated very very well and do not want to compromise. I suppose I belived that this was all part of 'working hard in a marriage' " [i'>It's not them who would have to spend the rest of their life with him and endure his abuse.....it's you. Sorry, not read the whole thread through. I just want to say that I think to have one child is a really brave decision (that is if it is through choice of course). Whether it's for financial, emotional, physical, traditional reasons, whatever, I sometimes think it takes more courage to fly in the face of expectations and to determine that your family is complete with one child. People are quite insensitive and think nothing of asking when you'll be trying for another or stating as a matter of fact that the child needs a sibling. There are 7 of us and my parents worked really hard to bring all of us up. Government's schools, colleges and scholarship/loans did help.... A LOT!! All of us have good relationship with each other but none of them is my closest friend who I confide to. DH only have 1 brother and although they might be close when they were children, they both found their own best friends when they started school. Now they don't even go out for beer when we are in UK. Hence, both of us never pay attention to anybody who said that we should have another kid so that DD have a friend. For us, THAT is not a good reason at all to have another kid. Considering we both work full time, time is also a factor. Whatever little time that we have left after a long day at work and at weekend is just enough for one child. Furthermore, DD would not be entitled to neither my government nor DH's government scholarship/loans when it's time for her to go to college. It would be our own saving. Being in a neutral country without any help from government and without good remuneration package make us practical as to how many child we could REALLY afford on our own and still be able to save some for our retirement ;)

Is it possible to block your number so that it does not appear on the receiving persons phone (Etisalat or Du). I am not planning on making any prank/nasty calls but I do not always want this to be displayed. If you find out the way, please do not share the "secret" with Substandard Chartered Bank. I have kept all their nuisance numbers so that I don't accidently answer their call ;)

Talking about the feelings of longing women have, it seems even women with children can have that 'missing' feeling... although I am expecting #2 I must admit I was a tad dissapointed that its a second DD. I always knew we'd stop at 2. In fact, I never gave a thought to gender. But this time when the sonographer told me its a girl I admit feeling a sense of loss, almost. For the son I'd never have. For all the blue and checks and sports themes I'd never buy. For my DH, who loves sports and wouldnt get to teach/play the game with a DS. My siblings both have one of each and silly me, I just thought it'd be the same for me. I dont want anyone ELSE to question my gratefulness that I have one healthy DD and hopefully another one on the way, but I hope somone will understand what I am talking about....It seems especially silly in the face of those posters who long for just one, or a second, but you know when you see the women with their broods it could be they too feel incomplete in some way, incredible as it may seem. If ever I go through that "longing" moment, surprisingly it is always for another girl.....one that would look more like me.....for a change ;) (apparently my gene is weak) Strangely, that feeling never come when I am with any of my nephews or any of the little boy or baby boy that I meet. Anyway, I think what you feel is not unusual. <em>edited by blimey on 24/05/2011</em>

Children are only as 'expensive' as you make it. The younger ones have some hand-me-downs,our next big family holiday will be a few weeks camping on the beach in South Oz,our car is an old 4x4 etc. We never had home help in the UAE,nor do we now.We cope just fine. Forget about maid and/or expensive family holiday......how do people cope with 4 kids' schooling fees [b'>HERE[/b'> unless they get package that pay for the school fees or they sent their kids to ......I don't know, Winchester or St Mary schools? They are probably the cheapest schools that we did consider sending DD to. <em>edited by blimey on 24/05/2011</em>

Blimey, where do you find the new to Dubai housemaids? I have the option to fly in a housemaid but I am not too sure I want to employ someone I have not met. My previous Indonesian maid, I hired her through an agency here. She was good when DD was a baby but when DD turned 18 months and have started nursery, she didn't like being with the maid anymore when she was not at nursery as the maid didn't interact much. The current maid, I know her sister as she used to work at the salon that I used to frequent to. Yes, most people wouldn't want to employ someone they have not met. As I mentioned previously, those that come with UAE experience and reference, you have to prepare to pay more than their current salary. And of course, from my experience in interviewing some of them, they do have expectation that I couldn't afford to fulfill sometimes ;) We are not the most generous employer but our maid know that we are quite easy to work with :)

If you hire the maids that already have UAE experience and come with recommendation, you would expect to pay more than those who couldn't provide either one. Our maid is on her 3rd year with us and we give her increment every year. If she doesn't want to continue with us, obviously she would be looking at a higher salary and benefit package. I know a live in maid who has been with a family for many years and is paid AED2500 a month to work about 4 hours a day 5 days a week....just cleaning, ironing and walk the dogs. No childcare whatsoever. Based on my previous and current experience, I prefer to hire a maid that is fresh to UAE. I take my chance ;) <em>edited by blimey on 22/05/2011</em>

Have you looked at Inspire Nursery? In my opinion they are excellent, and I think the fees will fit your budget http://www.inspireallchildren.com/pdf/summer-capm-11.pdf Thanks that would of been ok but their summer camp doesn't start til july 10th! Any others? Also don't really want to go over 600dhs per week per child if at all possible. Last December, while my maid was away on her vacation, my DD stayed at Little Wings nursery after her school hours. They charged me AED15 an hour. If I am not mistaken, they are open at 7.30am to 6pm. They are located between Safa Park and Jumeirah Post Office if that is convenience to you. Their website is under construction at the moment though. http://www.dubaifaqs.com/little-wings-nursery-dubai.php <em>edited by blimey on 20/05/2011</em>

Thought you could only stop a cheque and go to the police for a report if the cheque was lost???? This is what I thought too. Our company had to get a letter in arabic from the company that we issued the cheque to (they lost the cheque!!) and took the letter to the police station to make the report and get clearance. Only after we get the clearance, we are able to issue another cheque to the company. OP - can't you get the cheque back from the person you issued the cheque to?

Thank you Tallybalt but everywhere i look it tells me that the school attended must hold some form of US accreditation not having institutional accreditation has important consequences for students applying keeps being repeated. The IB is recognised but the school we were looking at does not do SAT's, so guessing that one is out. So how are the international curriculum students getting in to US university? Are their schools accredited, if so which schools are these? Do not want to go to a US school. edited by Here & Now on 17/05/2011 For Malaysian students, if we want to enrol US university as a freshman, we have to seat for SAT and TOEFL exams. I did my diploma in a college in Malaysia and then transferred the credits to my university in US. I only have to seat for TOEFL exams. How many credits that you are allowed to transfer would depend on the discretion of the university that you apply to based on the college's transcript and syllabus. http://www.macee.org.my/03_frame.htm <em>edited by blimey on 17/05/2011</em>

First of all, congratulations!! When I was pregnant, I ate often but in small portions. I ate fruits or healthy snack in between my breakfast, lunch and dinner. I did however gain 21kg during my pregnancy and thought I would never lose all those weight. After delivery, I was only 5.5kg heavier than my pre-pregnancy weight. Mostly water apparently. DD was 3.5kg. Do eat. Just eat healthy food and don't use pregnancy as an excuse to indulge on all the unhealthy stuff ;) <em>edited by blimey on 17/05/2011</em>

I have been in Dubai for almost 6 years now and no one that I would really call true friends. Considering all the coffee morning session are on weekdays and weekend are "sacred" family times for most family, I learn to accept that my chance to meet people outside my working hours are really limited. We have a few couples that we enjoy going out with for a meal once in a while as like us, they are also busy with their family and work. So, I am quite happy to just catch up with a few moms from school over coffee once in a while or just a chit chat with the single or childless ladies that I met at the gym.

[b'>Eager guard sparks mall bomb scare Tuesday 17 May, 2011 [/b'> A security officer sparked a bomb alert when he heard a loud noise in the car park at Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates and thought it was an explosion. An official in the Criminal Investigation Department in Dubai Police told 7DAYS yesterday that the bomb squad was called in with sniffer dogs and the parking area was sealed off after the guard sparked panic. However, the noise turned out to be either a car backfiring or a vehicle crash. The police officer said: “Our command room received a call from the mall about a bomb threat on Saturday afternoon claiming that a security guard heard a loud noise and he thought it was a bomb so we rushed to the mall immediately. “A special bomb detection unit and patrols from CID rushed to the mall and evacuated the mall’s parking area. We used also used sniffer dogs to check for any explosives but we found nothing.” The official said a number of shoppers gathered to watch the cops comb the area and rumours began spreading about a bomb threat. “We eventually discovered that the security guard heard a big noise and thought it was an explosion but we suspect it was an accident with cars crashing or a vehicle backfiring. “The guard informed mall management who called us without checking out the allegations further,” the official added. The parking area was re-opened after the area was deemed free of any threat. The alert came as football legend Diego Maradona was in the mall meeting fans. As someone who is very unfit and does no excercise I'm really curious as to how this running thing works. When I have tried to do it, I start panting and getting out of breath after about 30 seconds. What are you supposed to do then...stop I assume? How do I get over that mental barrier? If I ever do, then I might see you on the beach Izzy (I'll most likely be the one eating an ice cream though!) :) I was unfit too...the FIRST time is always the hardest. When I started more than a year ago, I have to stop so many times because my heart monitor kept on beeping due to the heart rate went way too high. Personally, I think the strategy is to choose a place that you like to run at and the right music to listen to. When I get tired, I don't stop....I just walk. When I feel better, I start running again. The more often you do it, you will notice that you do run more than you walk. Keeping track of your timing can be motivating too. So far, I can only do 2 rounds of Safa....I really need to push for 3 but the heat is killing me at the moment. <em>edited by blimey on 16/05/2011</em>

Guinness really! Lol Granted the one making 3000 has been with the family 7-8 years and the others 2+. The one on 3000 was very quick to tell him he wouldn't be able to pay her the same wages and did not seem to expect it either. Perhaps she did as she turned us down! Forgive my ignorance on the topic but we pay $10 per hour for part time in the US 1700 per month sounds great to us. :) However once I tell DH that most are on $1500 he will be pleased. It's AED1500 not USD1500. If you are going to pay them USD1700, don't know why they would turn down your offer :\: That's &gt; AED5000!!! Only office staff would get that much.

My maid has no ME experience or previous sponsor's reference. We paid her 1400 pm when she started with us in 2009 and now we pay her 1800. We have always been upfront with her when it's time to renew the contract as to what we could give her and what we could not. She is not perfect but we have no REAL issue with her. She takes good care of DD when she is not at school and cooks wonderful dinner for us when we get home from work. Personally, I think that whoever you hire whether they have reference or not will have risks tagged to her. We opt to hire ones who are fresh to ME or UAE as they have less demand and expectation. So far, we have been very lucky with both our previous and current maid. Anyway, good luck with your search. Hope you will get lucky too.

You can find them on Dubizzle. I did it last year for a few months but had to stop due to the driver's work situation.

Are you talking to ladies who've been asked if they're their own child's grandmother? That's me in the corner ;) She's now 16 and I'm 55. Am I allowed to join this group, or am I to be excluded from everything because I'm actually too old for all of you? :) Your wisdom to prepare us in dealing with teenage daughters would definitely be appreciated ;)

Like any jobseeker, she would weight her responsibilities to her remuneration. Location is also important due to travel cost factor. It's not impossible, of course, to hire one that is already here but I honestly think you would have better chance hiring one without previous dubai experience. They have less expectation and demand and just want to find a job with a good family ;)
