For me two weeks is actually not that long. I went to Vienna and Salzburg for a week 2 years ago and I felt it was so short. Last year I went to Paris for a week and wish I could stay longer. If you are going to cover 3 countries, choose cities that are close to each other so you don't waste your time on travelling unless you do train tour. For example, go to Salzburg, Prague and Munich. Choose quality, not quantity ;) <em>edited by blimey on 07/05/2011</em>

Do a search on the internet for some samples. It's not easy as you have to do a lot of reading and pick what would work and apply to your company. At least you get the idea what your employee handbook should consist of. And read the UAE Labour Law. Good luck!! Consultant charged between USD8K to USD10K for each procedure that they put together for you. And if I am not mistaken about USD450 to USD650 an hour to review the one you created so that they can give you some sort of feedback ;) <em>edited by blimey on 05/05/2011</em>

Thanks I will try to get to D International Art centre on Saturday Are they open all day or closed in the afternoon? They have classes in the afternoon. So I am pretty sure they would be open....just not sure until what time....at least until 4pm, I would think. Their students got their art supplies from their shop. Better quality than the ones I get for DD from Carrefour or Geant. I am however not an artist, so I am not sure their quality compare to DUCTAC. I was just aware that my eyes didnt seem to pop out whenever I look at the prices :)

You can also get them from Dubai International Art Centre located on the street between Jumeirah Town Centre and Mercato. The prices are definitely much more reasonable than the one at DUCTAC ;)

I wasnt pointing at one particular person, just the way the thread turned a couple of pages ago. It went from "wasn\t that lovely"to dogs, hats, nipp les, awful dresses blah blah..not necessary :( really, it was a lovely wedding and anything that might have passed my mind while watching continued on it's merry way, never to be talked about because it was not necessary :) Like every wedding, some people will only see and remember things that make them smile and feel the love in the air and some people would only notice and remember the "flaws" from the bride, groom, bridesmaid, ceremony, food etc. That's what make the world go round, I guess ;) <em>edited by blimey on 03/05/2011</em>

Pippa stole the show... All in all for two young people I thought a very conservative old-fashioned 'do', shame but maybe convention demands it. Disagree with everything except well for the two princesses. Should Pippa wear ghastly dress that most brides made their bridesmaid wear? Personally I think that by letting Pippa wear an equally beautiful dress on her special day showed that KM is a woman who is secure with herself and who love her sister and genuinely want her sister to share her big day. She already got her Prince anyway. Certain event is best kept conservative and old fashioned ;) <em>edited by blimey on 02/05/2011</em>

I don't think love is blind at all.....at the end of the day Camilla and Charles loved each other very much - you can see now how much they loved each other - Diana provided an heir and a spare....... charles continued to see Camilla through his marriage to the young Diana. I loved the whole royal wedding yesterday - Kate Middleton looked serene, in control, sure of her decision - she didn't fluff her lines like Diana did - I hope and believe that this is a marriage to last. good luck to them both and may they live a happy and fulfulling married life with no outside distractions! The reason why I said that "love is blind" is that a lot of people are so consumed with who is more beautiful than who. Camilla, despite her lack of beauty proved to be the love of Charles' life. Princess Diana was beautiful and was love by so many people around the world and yet, she was unable to find one man that would love her for the beautiful person she was during her short life. Prince William did go out with women who are more "stunning" than Kate and even broke up with her once. I guess during that break up, he probably realised that she is the right one for him after all. One of my favourite part of the wedding ceremony was when Prince William and Kate looked at each other and smiled during the address delivered by the Lord Bishop of London.

i didnt want to make it sound like ''comparing his wife to his dead mother" and all that but yes i dont find her prettier .... yes they have had a long courtship and yes hopefully its going to be a perfect fairytale ending .... but i was just talking about the looks .... i read about this poll where apparently she came third alongwith grace kelly as first and princess rania of jordan as 2nd and Diana was forth .... and hence my comment .... i really liked princess Diana and that's all I really like the late Princess Diana too. Everytime I look at Camilla and think of Princess Diana, all I could say is that love is indeed blind. I really like Kate Middleton. She seems like a very simple and yet regal woman. I think Princess Diana would approve of her. I hope she would not change now that she is finally married to her Prince.

it was a great wedding .... everything was perfect but is there anyone else who thinks that Diana was prettier ?? (oops i should hide now ;) ) I wouldn't want to make a comparison between his dead mother and his wife. One thing I noticed was that Charles married a "I am a girl, not yet a woman" but William married a woman. And since it was an 8 years courtship and hopefully, there is no "Camilla" lurking around, hopefully this royal marriage will really be a fairy tale wedding with a happily ever after ending.

Love the royal wedding....I am sure I would be sick of it all in a few days. Whether we love, hate or feeling indifference to UK, we have to admit that UK royal wedding is the ONLY wedding that the WHOLE world would want to watch and would fly across the world to be part of it even though you are not British or commonwealth citizens ;)

I'm not sure if this has been said already, but I think that a lot of times a group of a particular nationality may "stick together" at lunch or recess simply because they can all converse in their mother tongue and relate to each other. Not necessarily to exclude other kids. Although my son has always been around people of all different nationalities, he's never been in a situation where the students didn't speak English as a 1st language. So although he is Japanese, he actually doesn't sit with the Japanese group at recess/lunch because he doesn't speak Japanese. He hangs out with the kids that speak English as a first language (which coincidentally is quite a multi-national group). Yeap and this happen at workplaces all the times too. When I first arrive, I tried to integrate with various nationalities but in the end give up as they always speak in their mother tongue and completely left me out in their conversation. So, I just stick to english speaking colleagues or friends ;) No racism just sticking to what they are familiar with.

In DD's class, there are 2 asian boys. In the beginning of the first term, one of the boy had a birthday party. Almost all his classmates and at least one of their parents turned up at the party (swimming pool, playarea and hall). The boy's parents only made an appearance at the hall. The whole time we were at the pool and play area, only their teenage daughter was there. The father talked a bit to the other fathers but the mother only talked to the other asian boy's mother. She wear hijab and I have no idea whether or not she speaks english. Anyway, over the past 2 terms, there are a few more birthdays. All the kids were invited but both of the asian boys have not attended any of the birthday parties. All the kids tend to form their own little group. DD is not in any of the group and definitely not because she is discriminated. The two asian boys....they do play together a lot. Looking at the older kids in the school....it gives me so much joy everyday to see all the children regardless of their nationalities, race and colour play and goof around together before the bell ring. Again, some have their own little group but from what I see, a lot of the time, the close bond between some of the kids is due to their family hang out together outside school hours and have nothing to do with nationalities, race or colour. Personally, I feel that if you can afford it, you should give your kid the best opportunity to learn and explore the new world. There is no point in coddling her in a "safer" environment. Schools are for you to learn....good and bad. Btw, kid that age do talk about things that happening at school ;) <em>edited by blimey on 26/04/2011</em>

So I look forward to my geeky boys being able to look after me in my old age! I'm so happy for them to read a book rather than kick a ball -but somehow their 'sporty' peers look down on them. Well, it's always good fun to watch the likes of Lionel Messi, Tiger Woods, Federer, etc doing what they do best in their sporting arena. However, imagine the world today without people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg ;) I think we should really teach our kids that it is really okay not to be GOOD at everything and not to give much thought about their peers' opinion as long as they are doing what they themselves love and enjoy the most.

You select the maid from the CVs and they will bring the maid within 2 weeks or so. You have to sponsor the maid yourself though.

We just moved house and I am currently sorting out home telephone/wireless internet/sat tv etc. Wow! The service is amazing. These people are obviously trained technicians and not slaves from the subcontinent. It took both the telephone dude and the sat TV people less than 3 minutes to sort us out. I added another 30s to this when I asked them to also install our DVD player. No need to go into any office either. Everything was arranged telephonically (contract details were recorded over the phone too) and payment took place in cash at home. Just make sure you ask neighbours for recommendations. There are so many service prividers and not all them cover all areas. Our new neighbour gave me a number and within 30 minutes of phoning the person, he arrived to deal with all matter telecom. Wireless internet will follow in another 2 days. As for our visas - that was sorted within a week too. This is not Switerland (LOL) but things move compared to Dubai. Start-up costs for gas (cooking) is MYR 50 deposit and then MYR28 for 14kg gas - something to add to cost of living ;-) Public tansport runs smoothly. Again speaking from Penang side of Malaysia, but busses are plenty and cheap and in KL you have many more transport options. Our school charges MYR 1000 (AED 1216) per term to give you an idea of what that might cost you should that be an option. Malaysia is a great destination :) Do a google search for all the fabulous foodbloggers in KL. The people here love to vlog, phlog and flog tee heee - meaning video blogging, photo blogging and food blogging :) Reading the good experience that you have had so far definitely make me feel proud to be both Malaysian and Penangite. Hope this good experience will last for the rest of your stay :)

I have never been to the ones near new dubai area other than Tip & Toes at Palm J. I however prefer to go to Sisters' beauty lounge in dubai mall for my waxing. The rooms are always very private, clean and pretty sure spacious enough for you and the bump and good atmosphere too. I'm from Scotland so I shouldn't really be afraid of the rain but it's probably one of the reasons we moved abroad! It's a cold, driven rain there though! What about the crime rate? Did you feel safe there? I'm starting to feel more positive about the move!:) Rain in Malaysia....different than Scotland. They just come down pouring really heavily and not drizzle all day. Just pour yourself a cup of kopi-O and have some biscuits or fried bananas. Honestly, crime rate in KL is definitely higher than dubai. It's more so in certain areas. It's good to choose areas that are not too isolated and perhaps, a bit more family oriented with community spirit...and gated community is highly recommended. I have not lived in KL for the past 6 year and so many have changed since then from what I saw when I visited last December. Certain well known places have become quieter and certain new places have come up and become livelier. That's why I think it would be more helpful to get recommendation from the ones that are currently living there when it comes to preferred residential areas. another website that you could go to: http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=148 I am a bit bored at work....i thought i give you a link to an estate agent. She has a list of properties that you could look at to give you an idea of what are available. I think you would be looking at bungalow or semi detached types of house. Look at areas like U-Thant, KLCC, Mont Kiara, Bangsar, Kenny Hill, Damansara Height, TTDI and Sri Hartamas. http://www.elaineliang.iagent.my/default.aspx?p=Listings&type=BG <em>edited by blimey on 19/04/2011</em>

Thank you Blimey, DH company's office is currently in KLCC but they are moving out of the centre and we don't know where yet. I guess I was thinking there might be expat areas/ housing compounds/ communities.... proximity to parks/schools? Thank you for the link, I'll have a good look through :) I posted here as I was hoping someone could give me some comparisons between UAE and Malaysia. :) Did you live in KL? Did your children attend Alice Smith? Well, expats is a very small community in KL or any part of Malaysia. So, in KL you would see more integration between locals and expats. Some expats may keep to themselves but most expats that I know of including my DH (I am a Malaysian) go out with their local friends a lot. We didnt have DD back when we lived in KL but for many many years, Alice Smith International school has always been at the top. Unlike here, ...well, I don't know whether it still is....you never see any bickering from expat parents on expat forum about the quality of international schools in Malaysia. Among western expats, I would say that Bangsar, Damansara, Ampang (closer to city center area) and Kenny Hill are the favourite. Most new gated residential area would have children playground as well. There are several parks in KL that you could go to but personally, I think KLCC Park is one of the best park in KL for children to play and for you to jog around. Unfortunately, the residential properties around the park are apartment type. KL have many private hospitals as SeaofLove mentioned. The famous ones would be SJMC, Gleneagles Hospital, Ampang Puteri and Pantai Hospital. There are many private clinics as well. They are very cheap.....I used to pay about AED50 for consultation + medicines which you would get from the clinics itself. Depending on your location, you could ask for recommendation for the expat website. Just do not expect the doctors to be an expat as well ;) <em>edited by blimey on 19/04/2011</em>

Not sure where your DH office would be, so can't really suggest which location for you to live....Bangsar, Ampang, Damansara, kenny hill. Alice Smith International School has a very good reputation in KL (http://www.alice-smith.edu.my/html/s01_home/home.asp). Sounds like a really awesome plan!!! I used to have a friend (lost touch unfortunately) who is a single father with a young teenage daughter and works in remote areas of South America. Instead of leaving his daughter with his family in Switzerland, he decided that his daughter would learn so much more by travelling with him. They don't lead a normal expat life, more like a nomad life as they have to move a lot and really mingle with the locals. I am not sure what program he uses to ensure his daughter would not be left behind when they finally go back to Switzerland. He however said the things that his daughter learns on a daily basis are just priceless. I don't think 1 year is that long at all but not everybody would be brave enough to actually do it. So good luck with all your travel plans. <em>edited by blimey on 18/04/2011</em>

Once, when I took DD to playground, a woman asked me if I am looking for a new job as she needs a new maid. I just smiled and said, NO and asked her what happened to X's nanny as I do know her son as I have seen him at the playground all the time. DD and her son still play together until now ;) As DD looks more like daddy than me, it is very often for taxi drivers, shopkeepers, other maids or mothers to assume that I am her nanny. When I lived in Shorelines, I used to think that I should dress up in a certain way in order for me to be recognized as the mommy instead of the maid.

[b'>Succession planning and safeguarding your assets [/b'>[u'>[/u'> The UAE law of inheritance is based on the principles of Sharia Law. which differs greatly to the laws that many of us expatriates are used to and to the way in which our total assets are normally distributed upon death away from the UAE. In a Muslim country like the UAE, all courts adhere to Sharia - the primary source of Islamic law. Legal systems in the Gulf are usually quite complicated and those unfamiliar with their workings can find this difficult to understand & accept. So what happens when a non-Muslim expatriate dies out here in the UAE? According to the UAE Civil Code, Federal Law No.2 of 1987 (Article 17/1) stipulates that inheritance shall be subject to the law of the deceased at the time of death. This law was promulgated to stem confusion surrounding inheritance issues for expatriates. Therefore the law of the domicile country of the deceased would apply. Your “Last Will & Testament” is a document that details exactly what you would like to happen to your estate in the event of your death. The professionally drafted document can cover all aspects of your life, from physical assets such as property, investments or cash, to who you would like to look after your children until they are of an age that they can look after themselves. It is worth noting that if you marry, you will have to start again, as marriage automatically revokes a will; however, possibly just as important, a divorce does not. Your Dubai freehold property is still governed by the inheritance laws of sharia and would not be distributed as per your wishes or your Will. The UAE treats movable assets (such as cash, investments, cars, etc) differently to immovable assets (property) for inheritance purposes. Only moveable assets as safeguarded when making a Will. The laws relating to foreign owners of property in the UAE and inheritance still need to be examined closely and the process is ongoing. But as the situation stands, UAE law (sharia) shall apply to immoveable property (real estate) in the UAE held by foreigners. When purchasing real estate in the UAE, it is always advisable to try to do so through a foreign company that may be jointly owned by you, your spouse and/or your children. When an expatriate dies in the UAE, their visas are cancelled and banks are instructed by the courts to freeze all transactions on the accounts of the deceased, including joint accounts. The bank is obliged to freeze the account from such notification until the successors of the deceased are nominated as per Article 379 (4) of the Commercial Transactions Law, UAE Federal Law No. 18 of 1993. Unfreezing of the account can only be carried out by order of the Sharia Courts. This process aims to safeguard any payments that need to be made after an expatriate has died, such as outstanding loans and any debt payments and can take as much as 6-9 months to clear up. With Visas cancelled (and 30 days grace to make visa re-arrangements), and bank accounts frozen, does one even have time to grieve over the loss of their loved one? Many of us do not understand the possible implications of death in the UAE and the financial implications that entail. Simple financial planning can help overcome such obstacles and help create a safety net. It’s not just about safeguarding your assets by making a Will but also the welfare of your family & young children who are dependent on you even when you are not around. It is essentially important therefore to keep separate bank accounts in addition to any joint accounts you may have if you are married, as well as a primary offshore bank accounts as Bank accounts that are maintained outside the UAE are not be governed by the UAE's legal jurisdictions and laws. International Life Insurance is one of the most important steps to succession planning. Beneficiary payouts are paid out of trust held offshore & paid directly to the beneficiary thereby not falling as part of your estate for the purposes of distribution under sharia. Although preparing a will is not something many people relish it is essential in the UAE and in the long term. Succession planning is something that we all should be prepared with. Parents of minors should consider the possibility for temporary and permanent guardianship of their children resident in the UAE. Instructions in relation to this should be made before, and lodged at the embassy of which the parents are nationals. The procedure upon death of an expatriate who has made a Will is to obtain an application for a grant of representation in the deceased’s country of domicile. Once probate is obtained, it must be notarised, and attested at the notary public or the ministry of foreign affairs here before it may be recognised by the UAE courts as authentic and valid. Upon recognition by the government authorities of the deceased’s representatives the trustees or executors would have full power to administer the deceased’s estate in accordance with his wishes. In the case of intestacy, a letter of administration would also have to be obtained from the country of domicile and duly notorised & attested. People are often misinformed that when they die their estate will be passed to their next of kin even without a will. This is certainly not the case as the laws relating to inheritance of an estate are often complicated when there is no will in place. Without a Last Will and Testament (“Will”), these very important decisions will be made by the government. The opinions expressed by the author are his own http://www.arabianbusiness.com/succession-planning-safeguarding-your-assets-392987.html?page=0 [b'>Btw, I am not working for the author of this article. Maybe something that the newbies need to be aware of.[/b'>[i'>[/i'>

A few years back, I found out that I was pregnant by the time the bank offered me my job. DH and I decided that we should be honest about it. So, I told the big boss that I just found out that I was pregnant. He told me not to worry about it and sign the contract. A month after I started the job, I realised that my direct manager was not aware about my condition. So I told her. Her response was......so? Anyway, I was lucky that all my sickness during the pregnancy happened at night and my job was not affected. Personally, I think it's better to be honest from the very beginning.

Well honestly, I am not surprised that she absconded from the company. From the 2200 that you pay the company monthly, she only get between 750 - 900. Anyway, shouldn't the company provide you with her replacement? My neighbour got someone new from the agency after sending back the previous one who cause her problems.

Blimey, your maid’s recipe sounds delicious and easy to cook.. I am gonna try that on a weekend for my fiancé :D He always laughs at me because I am such a looser when it comes to cooking so maybe for once, I will cook something nice for him! And busybee2, you reminded me of that expensive steamer I once purchased, but never used! Good luck...hope your fiance will like it too. Btw, my maid also put some bok choy and baby corn with the chicken. I bought steamer a few months back. Only used it once so far. DH is not a fan of fish or seafood. His major flaw :(

Last night my maid cooked a very nice chicken meal...not boiled though. She wrapped the chicken breast in aluminium foil with soy sauce + honey + ginger + a bit of crushed chillies and cooked the chicken in the oven. DH and I thought that's pretty healthy and yummy ;) <em>edited by blimey on 11/04/2011</em>

We moved to Jumeirah 1 last Sept paying 125K for 3 very good size rooms and 1 maid's room. All with en suite bathrooms and 1 additional toilet. A large space for living and dining room and a big extra family room. We however get a very small garden....good for easy maintenance but not good for kid's birthday party :( The villa is not perfect but love the spaciousness and layout. Not sure how much we would hv to pay when we renew though.

A few years back, I used Monster.com service. Worth every penny I paid as I got call for several interviews after that and was offered two jobs within the same period of time. Good luck! <em>edited by blimey on 10/04/2011</em>

When it comes to maids, I think the Philippines government constantly changes their rules but don't update their website to reflect that. My maid went back for her holiday last December. Instead of registering with POLO here in dubai, she decided to do it in her home town instead. Her friend who did it in July told her what to do & what to bring but by December, it was different requirement already. If that is the new rules, maybe the best way to send maid home when they could not provide training certificate would be via KL/Spore.

You can try contacting the following: http://www.homelypetz.com/#/who-are-we/4531801339 http://www.dubaipetsitting.com/ I found it a bit too pricey even though I am sure my cat would prefer this arrangement. I left my cat at European Vet while I was away. AED50 a day include of food ;)
