From what I understand as long as she has permission to work for you then yes it is ok. I asked the same question awhile back and that was the answer I got. HTH

The Ramada Dry cleaning which is just outside Mega Mart at the Centre can get things back within 24 hours, but you will pay for it but they do a great job. HTH

What we really like doing is heading to La Cigale, to the Sky-view bar for cocktails and a great view, we typically gor from 7-9 and then we walk or take a taxi in this heat, over the road to Los Spagettos (behind Royal Plaza). It is a great Italian restaurant, but no alcohol, so we sober up over a great meal, then we head home to someone's house for after dinner drinks. It makes for a nice evening out, good drinks, good food, good friends, can't really go wrong.

HI, I spoke with her on the phone a week ago and we arranged a time for her to come and met us and have an interview. Well she never showed and when I texted her to ask if she was coming she said her taxi never showed and she couldn't come that night now. Well then we arranged for her tom come 2 nights later and again she never showed and this time no text as to why not and I didn't text her. She was very nice on the phone. But time keeping and communicating with me her plans, not so good. HTH

To expand, the shop is called Sam's Boutique. They have tons of sewing notions and a fantastic selection of threads for sewing and embroidery.

I use the tailor next to the new Bombay silk on B ring round - just before the underpass/roundabout near the bowling. He has done a really good job with skirts and blouses I have had made. I am picking up some trousers in a couple of weeks. He is just very busy and can take up to 3-4 weeks to get stuff made, but I like the work he does.

I have been to the Four Seasons twice with children and a few other families with their children and it was good there. There is a children's section for food and sweeties and whatever juices the kids might like. And in the tower on the beach is the kids club which has two rooms and my kids love it there. Best part, we have never be charged for the kids. So they may say half price when you book but in reality we have never paid for the kids, only the adults, now my DH speculates because we go for the all you can drink sparkly stuff.

Yes, you are allowed to change school mid-year here. I have had a number of friends who have done it. The only issue may be if you don't give your first school enough notice (like 4-6 weeks) then you have to pay the fees for that next term for that school and the fees for the school you are moving your child too.

I am American but my sons and husband are British passport holders and it took just over a year to get offered a place. It is an excellent school, my sons love it there. There are non-British passport holders there but the school is sponsored by the British Embassy so those passport holders have priority. One thing to do, if you are in the country, is to keep calling, nicely, and going to visit and ask what your chances are. But if none of you are British Passport holders and the waiting list is full of British passport holders then your chances are very slim of getting a place. Have you looked at ASD (American School of Doha)? It has an excellent reputation too. Also to answer the OP's question. We love the school and everyone I speak to loves the school. It is not perfect but then I am not sure anywhere is. The children all have fun, are taught by excellent teachers who are always look to challenge and stretch the children. The facilities are good as well. No matter what your child is in to, sports, arts, music, or academics there will be something for your child. edited by blitster19 on 19/05/2011

Just wanted to add that you need to remember that there were 4 bank holidays (2 for Easter, 1 Royal Wedding and 1 first May bank holiday) right at the time you sent off your passport and it may be that the processing centre in Dusddeldof also had those days off which would delay things. I was waiting for some stuff from Aramex and it was taking forever and when I called the company in the UK they reminded me, and not kindly, of the bank holidays which we tend to forget out here. So they may have been affected by those as well.

The one on Salwa that Saw mentioned is Skate Shack and they have good bikes all Treks and such not sure about price, but they are all 'branded' bikes so I imagine a bit on the pricer side, though I could be wrong and it is worth a look. If you are heading towards the Industrial area from decoration roundabout it would be on your left. There is another small bike shop on TV roundabout on the side coming up from the corniche. I have no idea where to park for it as it is right on one of the corners of the roundabout but I had a friend mention it to me as a place to take a bike that need the tyres fixed. I never got there but it may be worth a look. I imagine you would park behind that parade of shops and to do that if you are coming from the corniche you would turn tight at TV roundabout and then turn right to go behind those shops. I hope that helps!

I know a number of friends whom have brought in the forbidden substance of p*** and no one has gotten caught. These are first hand friends and I have benefited from them bringing in the wonderful stuff. The main rule of thumb seems to be 'Don't be greedy' and 'No Bones'. As long as you follow those two rules you should be fine. Also my understanding from these friends is that if it is a small amount and they do find it they will just confiscate it and no other fuss made. They have brought it in from the Italy, Spain and UK. Hope that helps! edited by blitster19 on 18/04/2011

So my 4 year-old, pre-school immunise notice came in the mail (still loving the fact that our uk mail gets forwarded here to the po box). He needs 5, Dip Booster 1, MMR 2, Pert Booster 1, Polio Booster 1, Tetanus Booster 1. So where can I got to get these done? We use the Hamad medical system for everything else medically needed. Should I go to my Health Clinic and ask there or is there a special immunisation place to go? Thanks in advance.

With so much unrest in the world let's all be grateful for what we have, some days you don't get to see the seal show, that's life. Which is exactly why the behaviour was so shameful. I never said it was just Qataris, but I did include them with the phrase other Arabs. Yes there were Indians in that part of the queue, but they were the drivers, sent in to hold a spot in the queue. Them when the scrum started, the Arab mothers were lifting their children over the barrier to the drivers in the queue so they could get the tickets, as the tickets were only given out to families. The whole point of the thread was to point out the entire process of getting tickets to the seal show (a minor event) was a shambles. Look at the disaster the Asian Cup Final was. If this country cannot train and educate staff on all levels and put good processes in place and be firm, then something like the World Cup in 2022 is going to be a disaster as well, only this time the eyes of the entire world will be on the country and there will be lots of western journalists here who will not hold back any criticisms. I was in M&S on Saturday and took a few things into the dressing room. The attendant ask me to wait one minute while she checked the room I was gong to use was tidy (something which I thought was good customer service and we know how hard that can be to get here). While she was checking the room (which was the last one at the far end of the dressing rooms) an Arab women came in and started to walk in front of me and make her way down to the attendant. I said 'Excuse me' and gave her a 'look', which she gave me a 'look' back. Then the attendant came down and the Arab women started to show her how many items she had, in an attempt to be served before me. The attendant said 'Sorry madam, but this lady (pointing at me) was here first'. The Arab women said nothing and then just moved to wait behind me. Again another example of how they have no problem cutting in front to people because they feel they can and should. When the attendant stuck firmly to the fact that I had been there first, she complied. Which is why in order for events such as free tickets to something, the Asian cup final and any hope of the World Cup going well, they need to empower and train their staff to implement the rules that get put in place and make sure there are no negative repercussions for the staff when an Arab doesn't like that he/she has to abide by the rules as well. Sorry for going on a bit...

Thanks GinaM. So, hypothetically ;) speaking the part time maid in question will be very understanding and not mind if one were to ask for the letter from her sponsor that she is allowed to do additional work. She also won't mind if asked who is her sponsor? You know for that possible time in the distant future where I may want some part-time help around the house :)

I had some friends who heard on their company grape-vine it was going to happen to them(as he was going to get the sack) so they left the country immediately, before it was cancelled and they couldn't leave. My husband's company do not grant multi-exit visas but we don't mind. In the 2 years he has been here he has never been refused one, and he has left the country 6 times in that 2 years. But then again he has a very good relationship with his sponsor who owns and directly runs the company. It has never bothered us that they don't grant them. It is no hassle for him as the Pro at the office is responsible for getting all the paperwork sorted and he is very good at his job. I can imagine some of you may shudder at the thought of not having one, but in a war or natural disaster type crisis then the British Embassy will be getting us out regardless of exit visa status. Sorry for gong on by Catonclan is right they can cancel your multi-exit visa any time they want and for any reason.

RachelA - I know we say it is illegal and widely done in the same sentence but what is the deal here? Can I have a woman who comes in twice a week to clean and iron whom I don't sponsor? What are the penalties here if they decide to enforce law? Does anyone know anyone this has happened to here in Qatar?

My son is in the play too, and has a small speaking part, and I got him a costume from Amazon and aramexed it in. The costume cost £7.50 plus 41qar to ship in. I then went to Al Rawnaq, button and bows and bought some gold ribbon to trim it all and some gold and black rope for a belt. I went to a tailor for a quote here and buying a pre-made one and trimming it myself has worked out cheaper, plus no trips back and forth to tailor. Just have a look it might give you another option for around the same cost but not having to make trips back and forth to the fabric souq....

Thanks again everyone. It all went really well and just as you described until I went to hand over 2 of the stack of passport photos I brought out to Doha from England. The ones from Europe are to small.... A new question then where can I get American sized passport photos taken here in Doha with a white background? On a side not the Embassy were really good about the issues and I don't have to make another appointment. I just need to drop the photos off at the main gate during consular hours asap, which I thought was great.
