Hi, Thanks for the advice. I have been doing what you told me when we walk, I keep the lead very short and make her sit and talk to her. So far it did not prevent her to bark. I think the problem is that my DD who takes care of her a lot and seems to be her favorite in the family allows her to do what she wants. I told her she has to give her discipline, but so far she is not really following my advice. About sniffing people or animal, I am a bit afraid, because she looks so aggressive that I am not sure if I will be able to control her. I will keep trying. thanks!

Hi, this one is for the dog experts, as I am starting to get concerned. We adopted a lovely dog 3 months ago, and when I say she is lovely, this is true, she is great with my kids and she adapted very quickly to our home. But she is kind of anti-social and after she started to get more confidence about her surroundings she started to get really aggressive with other animals and with strangers. She cannot stand any person who comes to our house, she barks, pretends she will attack and once chased a toddler. She never bit anybody, but she scares people. She is only back to her normal self when the person goes... The same with other dogs and cats, she gets crazy when she spots any other animal, doesn't matter if the poor thing is meters away. She barks loudly, show her teeth and is difficult to control. Lately she is doing the same to any person we are unfortunate enough to cross paths during the walk, she barks and gets into attack position, and it scares people. I am concerned someone will complain about her, she is a very calm dog when we are only us, but she needs to understand that she needs to respect other people and animals... Please, anybody can give me some guidance before it gets worse?

DH is the one who cooks in the house, I am helpless. But I know that you only need to put it in the cooker and wait. Mom used to do it while she cooked the beans! :-)

Yes, pressure cooker, sorry for the wrong word. I believe it took around half an hour, but I would have to confirm with him, as I only noticed he was doing it when the cooker started to make noises. I can ask him when he comes home. BTW use the pressure cooker to do is how we do in our home country, I saw my mother and grandma doing that since I can remember. :-)

It doesn't burst. DH prepared a typical desert from my home country this weekend that also need the Caramel for the filling. He boiled the can in the pressure pan and it was ok, the can held it just fine. Only be careful to let it cool before you open it, because the hot filling together with the high pressure can make the filling fly all over and cause an accident.

Hi, Cooler is the A/C in some areas you pay a fee using it or not that can be very high. In Al Furjan you only pay for the electricity to run the A/C, so during cooler months you don't pay anything, unless you switch it on. The gas you have two options here, one is to apply for the gas company, as everything is set, but it is a bit expensive, as you have to pay for the installation and a monthly fee using it or not that is not very cheap as a fixed cost. Second option is to install an external gas canister. So you can buy a gas canister and replace it when it is empty. I don't use either, as my father created a connection for the electric stove instead that is working perfectly, but I don't advise you to do it, as you need someone who really knows what he is doing to be successful. BTW, appliances are cheap here, unless you want "state of art" appliances. The normal ones are pretty cheap. I paid 1000 AED for my stove and 1200 for a fridge. I don't use dishwasher. The washing machine was 600AED in January.

Hi Studiocitymama, As you may seen in other posts, I live in Al Furjan. I love the place, it is 4 months now and we don't regret our move from Marina. The traffic is an issue, but there are work arounds. We've found the perfect timings to leave the house and come back and it hasn't bothered us in anyway. DH leaves the house or before 7 am or after 8:30, in both cases he is in Jebel Ali in 10 to 15 minutes using the normal road. The access to E77 (I think this is the one that goes from Jebel Ali Port and crosses the DIP roundabout is open and can be used. Unfortunately the entry to the are is blocked, so you can use it, but you will have to park your car on the street, as there is no entry to the area until the open the road again. DH tried and said it took the same time, so not worthy, but I see a lot of people doing it, depending on the time and where you are going it may be an option. You are right there are no appliances here, you will have to buy. Be careful with the stove, as here it is gas connection, so electric stoves will not work. There is a good advantage that we don't pay for the cooler, it can be a good saving compared to other areas and so far DEWA bills were very fair price for the size of the house. The area is safe, I see the security guy a lot when I walk my dog. The only issue I see is that the final touches they are doing for parks and communal areas are progressing very slowly and they don't seem to be following any master plan anymore. But overall the houses are spacious, the finishing are good, Nakhel has a very good support and was very fast to fix all the nags of a list I sent to the landlord. The community has a good mix and now that at least half of the houses are occupied it feels pretty much live compared to when I moved. If you need any more info, let me know! Good luck! :-)

Hi Misabela, Yes, when I was pregnant I was also sensitive about many things (noise, smell, light). But when I say here is silent I say it compared to other experiences too. I lived once in an apartment that I had the neighbors from h*** that were night people, very active from 12 am on... Here for me is very silent, so no complaints so far. In Dubai I think I was very lucky so far, no noise from neighbors in any of the 3 places I lived here, last place I had an issue with the garbage disposal place that was very noisy and beside my apartment door, but no loud noise from neighbors. I hope you are enjoying Al Furjan! If you need anything let me know.

Hi, I also live in a type A and I have neighbors beside me in a Type B. I thought that it would be a lot of noise when they moved, but it is still very silent. Usually I hear nothing from there, the only time I heard something was construction noise (I guess some drilling). But I definitely don't hear any day to day noise from the house. They never complained about us either and we have a dog who barks not a lot, but when she does she is very loud. so maybe the isolation here is better... or your neighbors are loud....

Believe it or not, I have been there. We went to one in Green Community, lots of cars most Mitsubishi... DH did not like any. He contacted the Al Futtain yesterday because some cars in the website seemed nice, but you have to schedule an appointment, as the cars can be in any of their sites. Today I told DH, you are on your own... but I still have veto power!!! He is all excited now, let's see if now that he has freedom he decides.

I think you really need to decide on the type of car you want 4x4/sedan/ compact/sports and then you can narrow your search down. Its understandable that its getting frustrating car searching as your seach criteria is just so wide! Maybe you should go out to dinner somewhere you both like and go over the pro's and con's of each type till you come to a compromise. Good luck! Hi Dubai City Chick, I already tried it, I am a "list specialist", we discussed all pros and cons that you can imagine. But DH has a small boy dream that is not very rational. This is what is making the decision so difficult. He understand the points I raise, but the emotional side is too complicated here. We went to see some brand new cars, he liked some, but then says that maybe a second hand would be better, more comfort for less money... I am almost giving up and saying do whatever you want.... edited by brazilianindubai on 05/06/2013

DH will be driving it most of the time, we have a big 4X4 that we chose for the reasons mentioned below as our 1st car. I agree about size and this is one of the things I keep telling DH. He believes SUV is not a "car", he prefers a sedan. He ruled out sports cars (he wanted one BTW), but we agreed that it is not exactly comfortable or safe for small children and it is off the table (Thank god!). I don't like sedans to be honest, we had one once and it was always difficult for me to see the tail or front when I am parking or doing difficult maneuvers (enter narrow parking lots, curves, etc), I am not exactly a very coordinated person... But he is stepping his foot, as he accepted the sports car rule. We are targeting something around 100-120K maximum. We selected some models in dubizzle, but we are never sure.DH liked some A4, but then something "cool" appears in the search and he starts reconsidering and we start all over again. Thanks for the suggestion about taking more than one car to be checked, is it really possible? The owner accepts it? Could you recommend the place?

Hi everybody, I decided to post it because I don't know anymore what to do. DH and I decided to buy a second car, for the last 2 years we did not need one because I was always away for work and did not need a car on daily basis. Now I have a new work commitment and I am working part from home and part from office. DH keeps the car, as he works full time at the office and client visits and needs the car. The problem is that it is almost 3 months we are trying to decide what to buy and we are still without an answer. We don't want to spend much, we agreed on a budget, but we don't seem to agree in anything else. I am a very practical person and I believe we need reliability, so I believe that a new car or maximum 2 years old car still under warranty would be ideal. DH wants some kind of "special car", something that we would never be able to afford in our home country, but in this case it would be older, around 5 years, no warranty and usually more mileage. I try to see his side and I know he is also trying to understand my side, we a married for a very long time and usually we are able to compromise and find a solution. But now it is taking a bit too long and the car is becoming very necessary due to the summer (as I cannot easily take the bus anymore because of the heat and long walk). Any ideas what we should try? Thanks in advance!

We also love the place, since we've moved I finally feel at home here. Good luck! I know there are a lot of Type B for sale, you will definitely find one soon.

Hi 2dogs, I was wondering if you had moved already, last weekend a couple moved to a villa very close to mine with dogs and I was wondering if it was you! :-) You are right about the size of the villas, Type B has more spacious bedrooms and the shared bathroom, also one of the balconies is also bigger.Type A has the family room upstairs that I love the most about the house. About traffic, most of the days it is not so bad, DH goes to Jebel Ali and sometimes he leaves the house about 8:30 and in 15 minutes he is at work. But I had an awful experience once coming back from a business trip when I was stuck in traffic to cross the exit bridge for 45 minutes... but most of time it is reasonable. I used to live in Marina and got stuck in traffic sometimes there too.

All Villas have private garden, all townhouses have the same size is around 40 sq meters, for us is more than enough. Most of the villas that are closed waiting to be rented still not have landscaping, so in most of cases you will need to pay to do it. I had a very simple work done as we did not know hoe long we are staying. There are some villas for rent/sale that have grass and some plants, this was arranged by the landlord probably to get a better value for the rent. There are independent villas also, 3, 5 and 6 bedrooms, the gardens are bigger for these, but the rents also. I believe the independent villas with 3 bedrooms are renting from 180K on, 5 and 6 around 230K as far as I have seen in dubizzle and newspaper. The gardens are big, you have garden in front back and sides of the villa in these cases.

Hi, I moved to Al Furjan last January. The area has improved a lot since them, the landscaping is almost done (some parks are yet to be finished) and it is a nice place to live, walk your dog, etc. I walk my dog twice a day, there are plenty of places for the dog to stroll and it is very pleasant to do so. The villas are spacious, I live in a Type A, but even the Type B is pretty good. The traffic is the main issue to be honest, the only official exit is through Discovery Gardens and it can be bad in the mornings and evenings. What we do is to leave the house around 7 and come back before 6. Usually the traffic is fine. You can also leave close to 9 am if you can, usually the traffic has improved by this time. There are some non official roads, but they are not officially open. I believe that at least one will be open soon. There aren't many shopping areas close by, there is a small market that delivers close by, and there is a small shopping area that will have a Geant Market and stores to open early 2014, it will be very close to Al Furjan entry. Currently the closest shops are in the beginning of Discovery area and IBN Batuta Mall. Please let me know if you need more information. There are some ladies in this forum also living here.

I just contacted Emirates and the rule is the following: Children between 5 and 12 years will mandatory be in unaccompanied minor category. An adult ticket will be charged. Children between 12 and 18 years old are considered "adults" for the ticket, the unaccompanied minor service can be requested or not by the parents. Children with special needs will always need a paying adult accompanying them, even if the service is requested. There are some restrictions for Canada flights (Air Canada doesn't provide this service, so Emirates only offers the service for flights to Toronto, no connection flights). Also some restrictions for Italian kids entering Italy (additional documentation requested). Thanks a lot for all the answers, I am almost convinced that it is doable.

Hi, I am looking for some advise here. I have two daughters and I would like them to spend the summer in my home country with the grandparents. Unfortunately this year neither myself or DH can travel, as we are stuck due some work commitments. It is not a possibility the grandparents picking them up, as the ticket is very expensive (quoted today around 2700 USD). We had a neighbor once that used to send her kids by Emirates to visit family by themselves, the ages were very close to my kids and it was always ok. My kids are 9 and 11 years old, it is a very long flight 14 hours. Is it crazy to consider this option? My main concern is more when they get to our home country, as it is not exactly a very organized country. I talked to some friends who work to Emirates and they say that the service for unaccompanied kids is good, but they only used for teenagers. Plan B would be them stay stuck in the house the whole summer, as I will be working and will probably get maximum a couple of days off during the summer. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi, I had pre (eclampsia) during my first pregnancy, around week 30 my blood pressure started to be high and my doctor started to monitor it very closely. I had to take medication until the end of pregnancy, but got to term. I had a c-section because my blood pressure was very high when week 37 started and my DD was in sitting position, my doctor decided that wait would not be wise and she was born that week very healthy. One of the things I noticed was that my blood pressure started to get high when I started putting weight, it was slow until 24 weeks (got around 2 kgs) but suddenly I started getting very swollen (I guess it is not the correct word, sorry about that) and in one month I put 7 kgs (no change in life style or food intake), after that the blood pressure started to be an issue. I did not face it during my second pregnancy, my doctor said it would be unlikely to have it twice, but not impossible, so I got the blood pressure monitored very closely too, I even had daily measures to make sure, but it was never an issue, actually it was the opposite, my blood pressure was always very low. This is very serious, so don't take it lightly, the situation can change in a matter of hours and you may need medical intervention, so please be careful and follow whatever advice the doctor gives you.

Hi, Al Furjan is still a very recent area, so don't expect much on the short time. IBN Batuta mall is 10 minutes away by car without traffic. The same about the Discovery Gardens shops and markets. Close by there is only a mini market in the Masakin complex (beside the villas), but it is very small, only for emergencies. The area has some parks, close to my house there is one that is good and a lot of kids play around it. But there are still some under construction, the closest one to my house (a block away) still has 3 deep excavations in the middle, not sure if they will be a lake or playground.... The area is looking much better than when I moved 3 months ago, but it is still work in progress. The access is still an issue, the only real access is by Discovery Gardens and there is a lot of traffic in the morning and afternoon. There are some other access but you can take it by your own risk, as they are not official and usually involves some sand....

hi, I live in a townhouse, not independent villa. I don't pay chiller here, as far as I know the a/c is on top of the villa, so no extra charge, it will be charged as electricity on your Dewa bill. Townhouses are smaller than villas, so far all my bills including housing fees were around 1000 AED. I hope it helps!

Hi an update and another advice... I decided to cancel her visa, but I am not sure how to proceed. She is a live out maid, what adds to the complication, I cannot force her to leave, because I cannot go to her house, force her to pack and go. To be honest I don't want to do it either. She is living in Dubai for 7 years now, she lives with her daughters, the 3 of them share the rent, so it is important that she stays, I doubt she will do something crazy, I think that like me she wants a way out, she has some kind of illusion that she will find someone like her former employer and any other house would be better because she could take 2 months of vacation (she keeps telling me that all her friends spend 2 months in the summer away) or it would be closer to her house (to be honest here is far for her, but it was her option, she had another job offer at the time I hired her and she preferred to work for us). Anyway, I only want her out of our house, but I don't want to destroy her life sending her back. I can cancel her visa or even give her some time to find another job, when I hired her it was her situation, she was still in the country looking for a job. the previous employer cancelled the visa when I confirmed I was going to hire her, as they were leaving soon. what should I do? I know that most of you will tell me to be harsh, but end of the day she never did anything so bad, she is not hard working and she thinks I am a push over, but she never stole or did anything really harmful to any of us. Has anyone been in the same situation with a leave out maid?

Hi, I sponsor my maid, I processed her visa in Al Jafilya immigration that has ladies section. I had no issue at all, no questions asked. I have the requirements to sponsor, at the time I hired her only I had, as my husband wasn't working yet at the time. I recommend that you go to an office with ladies only section, it was really fast, around 20 minutes to complete all the process and there were several ladies also with maids, so I believe they are pretty used to do it. if you have the requirements, salary, house under the requirements and your visa is stamped with a job that can do it, I see no issue.

I am not expecting her to have a week here or there... I can give the month, but she cannot decide when, specially without talking to me and in the middle of the contract... that is the issue, not duration of the leave. I guess it is more a moral issue that about her right.... Quinn10.. you are so right!!! Unfortunately we sometimes we endure things for lack of option, but I will solve it! Enough is enough....

I know that she lives with her daughters, both work in Dubai, and she said they bought her ticket because they all will travel together. What for me makes sense, I could have bought it for her months ago when they did it to get the "good price". My problem was that she did not discuss it with me, she assumed I would accept everything and give her the money. Probably her daughters said it would be ok. My only concern to post an ad is that she looks for jobs in here! :-) She will know I am looking for a replacement. I don't know how long it will take to find someone, I am concern that if she knows the situation will get worse.

I told her that I am unhappy, I worked from home these last two weeks and had some crazy discussions with her about cleaning, I had to show her how nasty her cleaning was, as she kept saying she cleans a lot... I had to get to the point to show her that she had mopped without cleaning first and I put my hand on the floor to show how dirty it was (dog fur and dust everywhere on the wet floor she "cleaned" a minute ago). She said that it was very clean.... Today I told her clearly that she doesn't respect me and I was very upset. Told her to leave for the day and that we talk next week. I think she is going, she said she can bring the ticket, she even told me the price. So I doubt that she is not going...

Thanks for the replies, I am relieved that I am not overreacting... Her contract is up on December... I renewed for complete lack of option, I was traveling a lot last year and could not find a replacement at the time and thought that was better to stay with the devil that you know... Anyway, I know it is unacceptable that she yells, it was the first time I saw my DH having a conversation with her, it was when he saw her yelling at the kids. She claims she is not happy here, she says I don't pay enough and she wants a raise (I pay enough, at least by EW forum), she even said she would leave last year when the contract finished, then she changed her mind, and told me "I am happy here!", probably reality was not as sweet as in here, but she takes it for granted. I am starting to look for a maid immediately, and I will not pay her ticket, I will book a ticket, if she wants to take it, she takes it, if she wants to throw it away it is her problem, I am not obligated to pay for something she decided behind my back...

The number of the guy is 052416416, his name is Ali, he as far as I understand, stays the whole day around Al Furjan, he shares the commission with the agents that really have the villas for rent, but I did all the viewing with him, he showed me 15 villas! :-) I selected 3 i liked the most and he told me the ones that could get the price i wanted and number of checks. After that I went to the real agent that had the villa and gave the deposit and signed the contract with the landlord. All was ok, the documentation was all ok, provided in advance. I put some changes to the contract, I even received the deed title to register in Ejari, so I think it is safe. The landlord even opened a ticket with Nakheel to fix some problems in the villa after I moved based on a list I sent with the snags. I liked the guy because he had all the options and knew who could negotiate and who would not low the price. About the dog door... I think I am too new in the having a dog! :-) I keep the door open for her. Not sure when it is too hot, but so far so good. BTW, are your dogs small? You have to be careful with the fences in the backyard, they are really low, 1,20m. If your dogs are big you have to think about a solution for it.

I can give you the phone of the guy who rented for us if it doesn't work. I am in Quortaj style villas, a Type A in the very beginning as I have a live out maid and wanted to be close to the bus stop. I don't have a dog door, did not even consider, as it would be a modification to the house and I still want my deposit back! :-) Best of luck for you and let me know how it went or if you need anything!

Hi 2 dogs, I live in Al Furjan since January and I really like it. About your questions, here are my answeres: 1) Dewa- The average for me is 1000 a month including my housing fees. actually the housing fees are almost 60% of the amount. I changed all the dicroic lamps to led, I guess this helps... 2) it is very safe, there is security around the area all day in motorcycles. The only issue so far for me is that some homeless people are camping in the doorstep of some empty houses, so far harmless. DH doesn't like because they use our tap in the garage. But apart from that and the lots of workers around, I don't see any issue. And it is not desert, far from it, I walk in the mornings and take the dog to walk in the evening and I always meet people. 3) I have a dog, my neighbor has many dogs and cats, there are many around, I am surprised you haven't seen, they are very popular around here. 4) Taxis you will need o order, but they come here on time. I am using Dubai taxi and one of the drivers who picked me up once, I had no issue so far. 5) It is very lit at night, actually it is a bit too much, There is a lit tree close to my window that sometimes makes it difficult to sleep! :) They are finishing the parks lighting, but most of the areas are very very lit. 6) Bad points are traffic, still only one real access, they just closed the back access that was opened last month, I guess a lot of people were not respecting the speed limits for the area and still there is a lot of construction, but I have faith it is temporary. The cooker is an issue, but you have options, I installed an electric one with help. There are many houses that install the external gas connection. You can always pay for the gas installation, but it is pretty expensive. 7) I am paying 2 cheques, I asked for it and for me was not negotiable less than it. There are so many Dubai Style houses available, I am pretty sure you can find a good soul that will accept 3, there is a lot of offer still, many houses empty, specially the Dubai ones. And negotiate the rent, I got mine for a very good price, much less than what they are asking today in the newspaper. And you can find a lot of variations, Last week I saw type B in the newspaper between 155 and 135k. I hope you find your house, it is a very nice area and improved a lot during the last 3 months.

Thanks for the suggestions! We prepared some dips, salad and there are a lot of meat free appetizers. Let´s see how it goes! I´ve found out that they were vegetarians only today! Last case scenario I will order something close by.

Hi, We went last year in November for 6 days. I have 2 girls, 8 and 10 and we felt relatively safe. In Cairo the trip was not very eventful, we took a night train to Luxor and had tour guides with us all the time. In Luxor it is a bit annoying the hassle, people follow you all the time offering information, trips, stuff. My DH was very annoyed. I recommend you have some tour guide with you, they keep the hassle at bay and you can enjoy the views. I am only wondering if May will not be too hot for the kids. November was quite ok, but it was still very hot during the day and not much shadow in the sites.

I could go onto next breed she is looking at buying.. but I won't ! If you are buying a dog as a statement piece, like a new car or a handbag.. then I understand, dont agree but I understand. If you are looking for a new member of the family, then pass by a shelter and try not to get smittened by at least 1 of the many dogs that they have in line to be put down! I can assure you a "mongrel" or a "mut" will cost you significantly less vet bills and can be as rewarding as a "pure bred" "pedigreed" dog! edited by shabbydiva on 15/04/2013 I could not agree more. I had a pure breed dog many years ago who survived only 3 years, as he suffered from some of the breed diseases... when we lost him it was a lot of suffering for him and for us. After a lot of thinking we adopted a lovely lady in K9 two weeks ago, and it is amazing how a very scared dog in only a few days can become a real family member. She is the most polite and behaved dog that I have ever seen, she is already completely crazy about my daughter and I have never seen my DD so happy before! Cross breed cannot be the most fancy dogs in the world by they for sure can be great and loyal friends, when a pure breed most of the time depend on luck and honest breeders.

Hi, I would like to thank you ladies for the advice. I called Apple and the very helpful lady open a ticket and told me to send it to one of the authorized service for evaluation, as if the problem was not caused by me they would consider extend the warranty and replace it. I got a call yesterday that they approved the replacement. :-)

Hi, I complained using the email in their website in 3 different occasions, all of them regarding the Privilege Club. The answers took long time and the first time they answered the complaint never solved the problem. I insisted and in the end I got a good solution. I never tried to complain on board or fill the complaint form that you can find in the plane, I really doubt they really deliver it somewhere, the email is slow, but they eventualy solve it. Make sure you keep evidence of the trip (booking confirmation and ticket). Good luck!

Hi Misabella, I doubt that 90% of the villas are rented. I look from my window and only in my block I can see 6 unoccupied villas. There are many more around, even in "premium" locations. Maybe some owners are trying to get better prices after the occupancy is high. Anyway, I am living here for almost 2 months and nothing to complain, we are all loving it.

I was reading the threads and I was thinking about something that happened last year with my DD, the school sent a camping trip request, the price wasn't cheap, but we could afford it if we wanted to. I talked to my DH and we thought that DD (9 years old at the time) was not mature enough to sleep 3 nights out, so we decided to wait one more year, as the trip happens every year to the same place. We received an email from the teacher saying that although the trip was "optional" he was sending that email urging us to reconsider because there would be "school activities" during the trip and after they came back an activity that would be graded would take place and my DD would not be able to participate and her overall grade would be affected. I am wondering how come a school can have grades for activities during optional trips. I understand that if the parents can afford and agree that the trip is age relevant it is always great to have the experience, but you cannot have the child missing grades only because the parents cannot afford the trip or don't consider the trip adequate to the age. End of story I complained at school and got the answer that she would not take the tests related to the trip and this would not be taken in consideration in her case. In the end almost half of her class mates did not go, some probably for the same reasons as ours and some because they could not afford it. I have nothing against trips, doesn't matter if they are expensive or not, but schools cannot force any parent to pay for a trip, unless the trip is very cheap or included in the fees, they cannot have a trip included in the academic activities for grades, this is not fair to the kids.
