Did you save a copy of all contact and emails? If so print them out and take them to RERA and yes open a case. Yes, I have emails I sent and the email he sent me about what would be checked. The rest was verbal, the visit of the person to check the conditons, etc... What Rera can do? I did not mention but the landlord is in Saudi. I am glad so far he could not rent again, if I can avoid that anybody goes through that I will, he is very greedy and wanted to raise my rent in 50%. When I sent him the law he said I could saty, but created all kind of trouble to renew and for me to pay. i decided to leave because I was not so happy with the building either, so I did not think it was worth to move the next year, as he said it would be non renewable. If he is not in the country and I cannot contact hin, is there anything Rera can do?

I had all crazy and lame excuses to postpone or cancel classes. It seems that all is allowed and they are doing us a big favor. My instructor would be late and cut the class short when she had better things to do. My classes were on Saturday only. Once that I was a minute late she complained like it was an hour late! :-) I tried to complain and what I got was that if I want another instructor I would have to wait a month for another lady who could work Saturdays.. Took me 2 months and a half to complete all classes and tests, even passing on the first try. So I believe that anything here is "normal"...

Hi SeaofLove, I have only one more question for you, because I am really foreseen some trouble by the end of my contract. If I get the rate for the rent increase, prove to the landlord that he doesn't have a case and the landlord keeps saying I must vacant (he knows he is wrong, but playing to see what happens) and I refuse to leave, as it is my right and stay. The contract ends and I haven't signed a new contract, what happens? Is it renewed automatically? If so how I give him the cheques if he is refusing to sign? Do I have to go to Rent Committee and give them the cheques? What is the process in case the LL is really nasty? Another thing, in my current contract I was able to remove the sentence not renewable, as the LL wanted to have it and I said I only sign if it is out of the contract, he accepted, but said that it doesn't mean anything because if he doesn't want to renew he would be in his right, as it is a one year contract and renew is under the Landlord discretion. I had it in my previous contract, but when I mentioned the RC and the RERA index the LL gave up to kick me out, but this time I want to make sure the law is on my side, if the LL plays nasty I can stay anyway?

I really don't think it has to do with the fact of man or woman to be honest. I can tell my case, I came to Dubai and brought my husband and kids, all sponsored by me. When my DH found a job we only cancelled his visa, the kids as still under my sponsorship. We did that because my benefits were better than his, but if we had changed the sponsorship he would be receiving the benefits and I would not. This is not applicable for the housing and car, but for health insurance, school and flights. I have heard that if the couple works for the same company, usually only one gets the benefits, usually the one with the higher package.

Hi, I had the same issue with my phone and I put it inside a box with uncooked rice for 1 full day. The rice absorbs the water and it will dry whatever is preventing it to switch on. I did that with a phone and I could remove the battery, as for the ipod it may not work because you cannot open it, but it is worth a try if you cannot find another option. Don't try to switch it on until it is completely dry, as it can damage it.

Hi Suzimack, Yes I moved to Al furjan a month ago and I am loving it. My kids go to two different schools, as when we moved I could not find seats at the same school and when I found my DD did not want to move. My kids go to EIS jumeirah and Greenfield Community school, both are taking the school buses. The EIS bus take my DD at 7am and GCS bus picks my other DD at 6:50. The buses time are more convinient than when we were living in Marina.

Hi irishmom, I only saw your post today. It is funny that they fixed the dishwasher/oven issue for me without any trouble, it was in the list that I sent to my LL and he sent to Nakhel. They only did not fix the backyard light. My father did it himself and it is working fine now. About the garbage, I have no clue, today they removed some boxes I left outside, but the garbage is still there. As I am only home in the weekends I could not find thi out yet. Have you?

Hi, My kids never went to this school, and I would not even consider after we went through during a visit in 2011. I was desperate looking for a school after two weeks in Dubai and no luck for my DD. The relocation company helping me called saying Winchester had a seat to go there on the next day. My husband took our daughter and the translated documents and they were treated very bad. The person who saw them ignored the documents and said that my DD would have to repeat a school year, this without any kind of assessment, only because she did not speak English. No support was offered and it was take it or leave it. We decided not to accept and look for another school, luckly we found one a couple of days later. I have some friends with kids there, none of them is very happy about it, but they say it is close to home or reasonable price, but never anything about the quality.

My husband did that in Knowledge Village 6 months ago. All there including the fingerprints. When I did it 2 years ago the fingerprint collection was not available. He even received the card in the Knowledge Village post office two weeks later.

I have all my family as my dependents in Skyward. Every time they fly I get 20% of their miles in my account and they get the full amount on theirs accounts. It is definitely worthy as it helps increasing my miles, however these are not Tier miles, so you can redeem them, but they don't help you to have the tier upgrade (silver or gold). I do all online, once they did not credit my kids miles and I asked online to do it providing the boarding pass.

I guess all depends on who is in charge for the pick up. I used Ahlan twice and the experiences were different each time. The first time I paid for the simple service for my MIL, they were great, no queue wait, a very nice guy helped her with absolutely everything until we met outside. He even called twice to give status. My MIL absolutely loved the service. The second time, around a month later we paid for the more expensive service including the porter, as my sister in law was coming with two small children. It was useless, they barely dragged her and the kids walking and there was no porter with her when we met her, not even the Ahlan person was there. I asked and she said after she got the bags the guy said goodbye and pointed the door. She said it was a waste of money.

My sister in law visited us last year with a visit visa with a toddler and without the father of my niece, as they are divorced. She had no issue at all. No questions were asked in immigration. My niece even has second citizenship that allowed the visa on arrival (different from mt sister in law) and not even then any question was asked.

Hi Sharry, Could you give some details about the cost of a full time maid? I have a live out maid at the moment, but things are really not working out. She still in the beginning of the second contract, as I travel all the time I could not find time to look for a replacement, but I got an ultimatum from my husband who cannot stand her and the complaints about everything, we live too far, the house is big, she doesn't like to cook. The service itself is awful, we have to re-wash all she washes, the cleaning is poor, sometimes I have to clean myself in the weekends, but so far I believe she is a trustworthy person, only reason I am keeping her. So I am looking for options that don't include a lot of time available for interviews, last time it took me a month, most wasting time with candidates who never showed up. Is the salary paid to the maid fair? This was one of the things that made me give up on agencies the last time, for me was not fair to be paying 3000 month + all fees and the poor lady getting 700... so I decided to hire direct and pay a fair salary. If you could give more info I would really appreciate. I sent an email anyway to them, but any info helps.

Hi, I moved two weeks ago, so far no big issues. Nakhel also sent people here for the dishwasher issues and some other small problems with tiles and light bulbs. I installed the lights in the bedrooms and to be honest it was a relief not to have all that dicroic (sorry if it is the wrong word in English) lights everywhere. It is too bright for me, changed to led where I could. The main problem for me is the light of the backyard that is connected to the living room, so far could not find a solution, my team of engineers is trying really hard (DH and father). This week they planted many new trees and I noticed that they put new signs everywhere. There is something between the two phases that the agents call community center, so far it is empty, so I am not sure which will be the purpose of the same.

Hi Star007, I moved to Al Furjan last week. Regarding your post, there are no 2 bed villas or town houses here, the smaller one is a 3 bed Type B. When I was renting my house the guy who was showing me around said that you could get some bargains in the Type B in case you don't care much about the location. When I moved I made sure to not have road view as my DH said he wouldn't like to have people on the road seeing our backyard. Anyway, I heard numbers like 110K in one cheque, but if it is confirmed of not I don't know, as I rented a type A. There are still lots of houses available, but many landlords are not facing the fact that the houses are great, but the location is still under construction, poor accesses, no facilities, the closest market is in another area, etc and want to get the investment back, you can find Type As in dubizzle up to 150K. If you are interested I can give you the number of the guy who helped me.

The landscapers are asking from 3 to 10K! :-) and it is the same case a matchbox size yard... Sorry for the ignorance, but where or what is warsan?

Hi, The alternative road is a sand path at the end of DG. It is not difficult to find and it will lead you to Emirates Road, close to the Green Community roundabout. If you leave from Al Furjan you can only take the E77 that can take you to Sheik Zayed Road, but if you come back from E44 or Emirates road you can enter directly and save a lot of time. My DH works in Jazfa and is taking the access to E77, saves a lot of time. Today I passed by DG traffic lights at 7:10 and all was free.

Hi, Just moved...still having some issues, as the trash bin was not delivered yet, they are promising and promising, but they say there is a waiting list due to the holiday. I installed an electrical cooker here, but I only made it because I have two electricians in the family and they found a loop hole in the electrical installation. I would not recommend doing it without help. I had some issues with Du, as when we requested the change of address the lady could not find in the system (I found it in the website... god knows). It took them two days to find a good soul who could complete the request, but maybe it was only bad luck... I found some snags in the house that only after the power was connected I could find it, so be careful, there were some loose tiles and scratched floor. Apart from that all is well. Today the school buses came without any issue and while I was waiting I saw 5 others, so I think it will not be an issue for most of the kids. The villa is lovely, so far no issues! Alison_T, I am taking the "alternative road", so far no issue with traffic.

Hi, I am moving to Al Furjan Villas tomorrow morning. The information I can give you is that it is a brand new area on the opposite side of Discovery Gardens, it is close by car only from IBN Batuta Mall (no way to go walking). The area is still under development, they are still landscaping the common areas and the future facilities and accesses. At the moment there is only one official access that is from the main road of Discovery. The area is very close to Emirates road and E77, however the access doesn't exist, you have to take a sand road to access it if you want to avoid the traffic from DG. The villas are really lovely and have very nice finishing, most of the houses are called Town houses and are 3 BR. There are some isolated villas that are bigger and can have 3, 5 ou 6 BR, they have very big back yards. So far there are no facilities (pool, gym, etc), at the end of the area there is a building the agent who rented my house said that will be some kind of community center or mini mall (he was not sure). The area is starting to become populated, I have been visiting it for 3 weeks now and a lot of people are moving in, the part I will live has almost all houses occupied, but there are a lot of empty houses still (they say this phase has 800 houses). The only market close by is in the Al Furjan Masakin, some buildings close by, depending where is your villa you can walk. They deliver for free. Apart from that you will only find shops in the begging of DG area and will need a car. If you need any more help let me know! And welcome to Dubai!

Neither EIS or Raffles or even GSC asked me any money for the assessment. I only paid the 500 when my girls were accepted and it was deducted from the first term fee. Actually I also had one of my girls assessed in Star (she did not pass due to the lack of English) and they did not charge me anything. There are schools that don't charge.

Hi, I have one of my girls in EIS Jumeirah. She loves it! They were great with her when we moved and she had zero English, she had all the support and the teacher was very nice. Academically I know that it is not an outstanding school, but the facilities are decent, the school is established (since 1991) and they are very keen to help and discuss any issue. I really feel my DD is learning and I did not feel so much difference from the curriculum in my country, she was in a top level school there. The methods are a bit different, but I have no complain. I have my other girl in GCS, I feel that EIS is a better school, I could not move my DD to EIS yet, but if I have the chance I will. GCS has better facilities, but I don't feel the same level of commitment I feel in EIS. About Raffles, I submitted the application when I moved, but I liked EIS more at the time, I know people who have kids there and they like it, but I read a lot in internet saying otherwise. And good luck, find a school in Dubai is a challenge....

As far as I remember I enter the country with a work permit that was issued when I was still in my home country and was the first step for the residence visa. You enter the country presenting it and it is used with the other documents, medical, etc to request the final residence visa. The labor card was a card I received with my residence visa stamped from immigration. Mine is from free zone and has my information and that I am hired by free zone. My husband has a mainland one that is different, but was given to him after the residence visa was stamped. Sorry about the guessing on wives working permission, but this came from Dubai faqs, that wives can work with NOC, but there are some rules. My husband never considered working without his own visa, so I don't know what would be the rules in this case.

Hi, I had problems with one of my daughters ID, I applied at the same day at the same place with the same quality pictures (same camera printed in the same place). My little one got it in 2 weeks, the old one after 2 months didn't. After these 2 months we got an SMS saying that her picture had bad quality and I had 15 days to go to the office in Al barsha and replace the photo. I am travelling during the week and my DH did not have the time to do it in working hours, so we lost the deadline. My husband applied again, new photo now and she got it in 2 weeks. Btw, the PoBox rule doesn't seem to be valid, at least not in my case. We applied for all of us, all with the same PO Box and my DH was lucky to get it from the post office in media city. Mine and my DDs we have to go all the way to central post office. :(

Hi, As my previous post mentioned I sponsored my husband. He was under my visa for 9 months when he got a job and has now his own visa. The visa for husbands follows the same rules of the wives, to be very honest they even use a word in the visa to say that work is not allowed that some friends said it is more or less like a "housewife"' so I am pretty sure the rules are the same. Working is mostly not allowed to who is sponsored by spouse, there are some exceptions that a NOC letter can be issued, I believe some part time jobs like secretary and things like this. You can find information in the immigration website in and Dubai faqs. You can also talk to your PRO, usually they know the rules and exceptions.

The E-gate card expires, that's why I got it in my Emirates ID, as I had 2 years to renew the visa. There is also a possibility not mentioned here, if your husband is Gold member of Emirates you can have the e-gate in the Emirates card for free for as long he remains gold.

I think it is a separate process. I had my Emirates ID for more than 6 months when I started traveling every week and decided to do the E-gate. The person who took my application (extremely helpful by the way) suggested that I used the Emirates Id, as it would be cheaper and I could use one card. I think you have to get your Emirates ID first and them the E-gate.

Hi, I got mine last year and paid 150AED. You have an option to chose between having a card printed or having it added to your Emirates ID. The cost mentioned was to have it in the Emirates ID as it is cheaper, the separate card you pay extra. I made mine in Terminal 1 on the arrivals, it is just after the stairs before you get to the Immigration lines. It took me 5 minutes to have it ready and I could use it to exit the terminal. My company pays for that, also my husbands, but you have to ask. You can also do it in the Immigration offices, I saw a counter in the Jebel Ali office last time I went there.

Hi Queen bee, Thanks a lot to find time to update us with your experience so far. I signed and will be moving to a type A close to the first entry some time next week. About the school bus, one of the schools I have my kids going said they already have kids there, so no issue, the other said they will fit her in the DG bus until there is more demand. The news about some access from E44 are great, as it will make my DH life easier, he also drives a 4x4.

I noticed that the space for the cooker is 2 cm less than the standard, I will have to buy a cooker anyway, so not so much problems here. You have mentioned the commute back from Al Khail road, is there an exit or you have to go through DG anyway? We are trying to find alternative routes, if you have one, please share!:-)

I pay exactly 2k. It was what she asked at the time and I accepted because she had recommendations. All my friends pay less than that, most around 1200 1500. She has the weekends off, all holidays off and if I don't need her sometimes she works 6 hours a day. I gave her 30 days of vacation in one year and paid her trip to Sri Lanka to visit her family. When I was close to the renewing time she asked me for a raise of 350, I told her I could not afford, actually it was for both, it would be much for my budget and she has a lot to improve, the service is not exactly what I expected and she doesn't react well to feedback. She said she would leave, I said ok and that she had until the end of the visa, around 2 months. After some time she asked me when we would renew because she wanted to stay, I guess or she could not find a better salary or she noticed that the conditions in another house would not be as positive as where she is. To end the story I end up renewing the visa for lack of option. So I don't think too many people can afford more than 2000, there are cases of course, but most of the maids consider 2000 a good salary, so don't feel bad, keeping a maid is very expensive, all the extra costs, visa, tickets, etc make us not have so much flexibility to offer better salaries and I believe that the money counts, but also the other things like the work conditions, hours, vacation, benefits, how the family treats her, so she has to see the full picture.

In your case I belive you can ask the information number, probably they will ask you to return to the place you collected the fingerprints and photo. They probably gave you a deadline to do it too.

Hi We moved to a villa from an apartment a few years ago and have never looked back. Admittedly we were in a villa prior to the apartment and absolutely hated apartment living as we loved having outdoor space etc and found it a lot quieter than our apartment. We also enjoyed not having to endure others cooking smells when we got into our corridor (although I think we were just unlucky in that respect). Depending on size of villa etc you will pay more in terms of DEWA etc and if you have a garden a few hundred a month to keep it maintained by a gardener. I am afraid I dont know the exact difference in cost of DEWA but we live in a larger 3 bedroomed springs villa and I think (sorry hubbie pays !) we pay around 2000aed a month. We have been in this villa for 2 years and have had no major maintenance issues. We made sure that the landlord covers those anyway when signing up. Not sure if we have just been lucky as I have heard horror stories re maintenance so be very careful. Good luck with making your choice. We absolutely love villa living and make the most our garden. We couldn't make the move back to an apartment now. In fact, tonight will be sitting outside with our chiminea on if it's nice and cold. :) We are moving to a similar villa next month and can't wait. Hi Sunglow, I believe I am more scared about living in a very quiet place far from most of things, today I can go to the market, pharmacy, etc walking and there is a lot going around, I live in Marina, have a lovely view. I have kids too and they are very excited about the move because they never had the experience, but me and my husband are still a bit concerned about so much change.

What about practical life, increase in bills, maintenance, etc? I am about to sign, but I am still having second thoughts, I really need some advice from who did it to add to my pros and cons list. Can anybody share some experiences? Thanks

Hi lou86, The villas are located accross the street from the last compound of Discovery Gardens, facing Emirates Road, but unfortunately without any access apart from the Discovery Gardens exit. There is nothing that you can find at walking distance, there are some buildings on the same side of the road called Masakin Al Furjan that have a mini market and some facilities, I understood from a previous post that you can use it paying some fee. Hope it helps, I have been there driving around these last past days trying to find a good location for a good price, as there are hundreds of houses for rent, the work to finish streets, parks, etc seems to be picking up, today I even saw a playground in a park almost ready that wasn't there 3 days ago. I am still waiting for the school bus to take a decision.

Thanks Queen bee. Only one last question if you don't mind. I tried to find out if there is district cooling or not, I visited some villas with two agents and the answers were completely different, one said no, only Dewa, the other said yes. This is very important for my decision as it would add to the rent. Do you have any idea?

Hi all, First happy new year! I would like to get some impressions about how difficult is to adapt from living in an apartment to the life in a villa. I lived in apartments my whole life and have no clue if we will adapt or not. Could you share some thoughts and the differences in the cost? I am living in a 3 br apartment and planning to move to a 3 br villa, small garden, no pool. Thanks!

Yes, I am aware of the traffic, this is one of my DH main concerns too, this and the possible issue with the school bus are in our list of cons. We liked the area because it is not that far from the city and the prices are still affordable, the house is great, the size, finishings, etc. We are still considering, we have lived our whole life in apartments... Not sure we will adapt.

Queen bee, thanks for your reply, I am also checking a type A close to something they say it will be a park. Can I ask you how much you are paying for the rent? My husband is concerned about the school bus, no idea if it is your case, but do your kids take school bus? Thanks!
