I'm one of the babysplash instructors :-) There are 3 weeks remaining of our current term & afew spots left on Sunday (Lakes) or Thursday (Meadows) so you're welcome to join now on a pro rata basis. Next term will start in September - we pretty much follow the academic year. Existing swimmers get priority enrollment over the next few weeks & then we open the classes to the general public. Registration can be done at either Fitness First registration desk depending on which location you want to swim at. HTH.

Salon Ink gets good recommendations from EW too. My friend had a fantastic pixie cut done with Yvonne (I think) & people were stopping her in the street asking where she had it done.

I have really thick hair (like a carpet) & was recently very impressed with Kerry Ann at Hairworks Ibn Battuta. She fixed a disaster from Ted Morgan.

I used Ted Morgan for a long time but agree with the other poster that they have gone down hill lately. On my last visit they refunded the cost of the cut as I was really unhappy. Hair works was recommended to me & I was very impressed. Kerry Ann fixed my hair in half an hour.

Don't sign up with AISS - they're very badly organised & mostly the quality of their teaching is dire. Often they use brand newly qualified teachers with no water experience. They are also the most expensive swim school at 95 AED per lesson. I remember the post you're referring to OP - there was some negative feedback about the baby swim classes at Wafi I think. Babysplash & Dawn venturas have been well recommended on EW.

How old is your LO? There are lots of advantages to continuing at nursery for FS1 - continuity, less formal, usually cheaper. No don't bank on a place at JAPS (or anywhere). Early years places are very in demand & you need to have some alternatives even if that means your child doing FS1 & moving for reception. Good luck.

Why do posters have to be so mean! So often when women are in need of advice or support they are made to feel inadequate. It's so unnecessary. Personally speaking I wouldn't have been able to leave my LO's before a year (mostly owing to breast feeding but there was a healthy dose of neurosis too). I can't imagine not having any social time without them. Every once in a while we have no problem getting a trusted sitter to have the kids for the evening. It's not healthy not to, surely! I believe the opinions expressed on EW are sometimes VERY skewed. As most of us do I have a wide circle of friends and acquaintances & ALL of them have a reasonable social life & are happy to leave their children in the care of trusted others from time to time. Even friends that are much more cautious parents than I. Time together without children is really important! This wasn't a real problem for me during the infant stage as quite frankly I preferred not to spend any more time wih DH then than was absolutely necessary! Thankfully it's very different now :-) He was off for a night out with friends at the weekend. He looked so smart & smelled delicious & it reminded me that I needed to make a date with him soon. Hope you work out a plan TDB. edited by BrownEyedGirl on 05/05/2013

This side of the end of term you could sign them up for squad level training. Over the holidays a summer intensive with one of the big swim schools will offer training/instruction at the required level. Try Speedo or Desert Sports Services. Avoid AISS like the plague!!

Yes, debts are owed by an individual. However, if the tenant experiences financial problems and leaves the property, creditors will have no compunction about seeking redress there regardless of who may be living at the address. Our last tenant was really intimidated by bailiffs wanting to take goods and chattels relating to another individuals debt.

It's ridiculous isn't it! To all those Don't customers you may want to check that you're paying the right amount for your services each month. We recently discovered that they reduced the cost of our home services package in August 2010 but failed to notify us so we have effectively overpaid by around 6,000 AED. They are refusing to refund or credit the amount so I will haven to complain to the TRA to try to get it sorted.

DS was over 2.5 but even then it was far too early. He had always been a fab sleeper but started to wake nurerous times a night. DD hated her moses basket when she was tiny & was climbing out of her cot at 10 months! She moved into a big bed soon after, absolutely loved it & slept better than ever from then on.

There was a very sad post afew weeks back with a link to a blog written by a bereaved mother. Her 3 year old daughter died after getting trapped under a chest of drawers. There was a picture of the piece of furniture & it looked so innocuous but the weight of its contents became unstable when the little girl opened the drawer. She was urging parents to secure all household furniture to the wall. Such an awful tragedy.

No, no one in Dubai teaches ISR. I too was excited when I saw this video some years ago. I did a lot of further research (as I am an infant aquatics instructor) and sadly it is a forcible training programme. The video has no sound. If you look carefully the baby is really crying hard! ISR is 10 minutes a day, every day for between 4-6 weeks and come what may the instructor will perfunctorily drill your LO in these self rescue skills. I have seen countless distressing videos of infants crying hard they are almost sick with fear & discomfort but the teacher presses on regardless. It is very hard to watch! I am an instructor for Babyplash & we use a gentle approach for water familiarization. We use cuing to prepare LO's for dipping (water submersion) and teach important self rescue skills with singing, toys & games. When they have developed good breath control we start to challenge them more them more, but always at the child's pace! If you introduce a child to the water in this way at an early age you can generally expect them to really love it! It can be more difficult to introduce older tots as they feel anxiety about their environment more acutely. Of course all children are different though and some young infants will dislike water & some will love it no matter how late they are introduced. edited by BrownEyedGirl on 08/03/2013

I couldn't disagree with you more Appeltiser. I am a Babysplash instuctor in Lakes/Meadows but the closest venue to you OP is probably the Dubai Ladies Club - Natalie is a fantastic teacher. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children & we teach important self rescue skills. The benefits of introducing your child to swimming lessons also include improved physical & social development. They are also great fun! Studies have shown that physical activity improves cognitive abilities & swimming is one area where we can start very young. We are just continuing to develop a natural affinity that began in the womb. The earlier you start the better so that we can easily make the transition from reflex to learned behaviour in the water. Starting in 2009, Griffith University embarked on a large, four year long Early Years Swimming Research Project with 45 swim schools in Australia, New Zealand and the United States. It was the largest study of its kind, and the preliminary results showed that children under the age of five involved in swimming lessons are more advanced in both their cognitive and physical development than their non-swimming peers. In 2011, researchers in Melbourne reported intellectual and physical benefits from early swimming lessons, with a scientist determining that children who were taught to swim by five years of age had statistically higher IQs. The research also showed significant physical benefits such as that moving in high water resistance strengthened the children’s muscles more rapidly than playing on the floor, because swimming activates more large muscle groups. Recent studies have also shown the amount of a person’s movement and exercise affects the size and memory capacity of their ‘hippocampus’. This is the area of the brain primarily associated with memory and learning, showing that through active early movement a child’s brain develops. Swimming is one of the key movement activities that can assist in stimulating brain development, and the bonus is that you can start you baby early. Sorry to go on and on but I am very passionate about this! edited by BrownEyedGirl on 01/06/2013

I guess that's why they have dramatically raised the minimum down payment that you have to put down now. DH and I were thinking of buying until we found out that as of Jan 2013, you have to put down 50% minimum! With house prices the way they are, who would put down 50%! I mean we were thinking of doing it just for an investment because rent prices are so good in the Marina, but unless you were thinking of living here long term and want a place here to call home, can invest money much better elsewhere. Just insane 50%! I thought this had been scrapped?

I was really sceptical about using the pill but my doctor said it would help with short cycle heavy bleeding. I tried Cerazette owing to a miscommunication with her, which I HATED. Difficult decision! I think your idea to introduce some nursery care for your LO is a good one. Your carer will get a little break & your LO will have some a change of scenery, social experience & sensory/stimulating input. I imagine the proximity will be a comfort too - having LO nearby & being able to pop in on your break. Personally I wouldn't worry sbout sickness. You can't protect them forever & ultimately it makes them more robust. He'll be fine :-)
