I think no is the short answer, not at that price anyway. This is around what you'd expect to pay for full time live in help under your own sponsorship. The sums don't add up if you're expecting someone else to be responsible for those costs and make a profit. You could talk to agencies about a discounted rate for a full time maid but it will cost a great deal more than if you sponsor someone yourself (somewhere around 4000 AED I would imagine). I'm not certain that it's legal but I think the closest you'll come to the arrangement you're talking about is by using an agency like Explorer. They will sponsor a maid and be responsible for all associated costs on your behalf for a monthly fee of around 2,500 AED (though there is an upfront admin fee too and a deposit) but the family is expected to provide accommodation. However, the proportion of this amount that is paid to the girls as salary is very small and the agency somehow circumnavigate other basic entitlements for maids as they don't even provide holiday and flights home each year. So, basically if you wanted to be an ethical employer it would cost a good deal more each month in supplements. Lots of people sponsor a maid on a live out basis.

I don't think we paid as much as that for our cooler. No deposit needed for Masafi water. It costs 12 AED per bottle. Rather than cost the biggest selling point is convenience I think - no lugging lots of bottles back from the supermarket and it's always chilled. Arguably it's better for the environment too.

My strategy is to buy nearly all fruit n veg from the Farmers Market at Dubai Mall. The strawberries (non-organic from Egypt, Dhs 5/punnet and organic from Al Ain, Dhs 10/punnet) are fab, as are the mulberries, grapefruit, oranges. I buy enough for the week on Friday mornings. I stock up on apples, blueberries, small bananas, baby food bits and brown basmati rice, low fat UHT milk cartons, Arabic pita breads, chocolate at Organics every 3rd saturday (20% off). The rest of the stuff (potatoes, onions, garlic, ginger, lemon, lime, Pakistani red carrots) bought at Union Co-op. Union Co-op has better prices on trash bags and toilet cleaner than C4. I tried (frozen) poultry from Organics but found that it released A LOT of water when cooked, not sure why. Now I buy Perdix or Al Islami frozen chicken parts. I buy red meat from Union Co-op Safa Park (I'm very fussy about how meat tastes and I like the Al Ain beef). Also like the lamb stew meat from Organics. We buy meat for "special occasions" from Park n Shop. I go to C4 once a month, mainly to get C4 nappies, C4 brand basmati rice (10 kg bag), but also any advertised special deals, baking stuff, special cheeses/ chocolate/ C4 brand jam. Both Choithrams and Spinneys are walking distance from my home but I go there with a strict list! Bread, Al Watania eggs, ice cream (Choithrams), cereal boxes from the "reduced to clear" shelf. Where is the Farmers Market at the Dubai Mall please Apricot - it sounds fab! Also, what days is it on? edited by BrownEyedGirl on 18/03/2011

For anyone that wants to know, I enquired about the playgroup on the Palm. It runs on Thursday from 10.30 - 11.30 and is 15 dhs. I haven't tried it out yet but the lady I spoke to sounded nice and I'm sure the facilities will be excellent as it's at the Children's Oasis playcentre.

Sorry to hear about this Homesickk, how frightening. I suppose you ought to have a proper allergy test done to determine the cause. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find good advise on how to go about this. If it is wheat that's the problem then it'll be difficult initially to make the lifestyle changes but it's probably a healthier diet as a result. Ricecakes are a reasonable alternative to bread. Fresh fruit and veg & pulses are still on the menu, as are potatoes. Corn is a good wheat substitute (cereal and flour) and gram flour is wheat free too. Good news that he doesn't have a reaction to diary at least.

the price of berries etc in spinneys/waitrose is ridiculous. i've seen punnets of strawberries in spinneys for 38 AED..... while there are boxes in C4 and Union Co-op for 5... (maybe depending on season) :\: even things like the little bags of carrots, some supermarkets have them for 5/6 and others are 11/12! Strawberries from the States and Holland are expensive everywhere but the punnets from Eygypt are always very reasonably priced, even in Spinneys (when they're available)!

Well, I'm spending far too much! 800 - 1000 each week at least for a family of 4, but I usually shop at Spinney's or Organics. I figured that saving afew dirhams here and there wasn't worth the inconvenience of doing the shop at several different stores, but maybe I should think again! Does it really make a difference? I think Waitrose own brand items are pretty reasonably priced and I often see some goods, the big pots of organic yoghurt for instance, that are more expensive in other stores? Maybe it's just that I'm buying brands or goods that are expensive everywhere, salmon for instance, and I can't bring myself to buy chicken anywhere other than organics!!

Sorry for the thick question. Why is getting in to FS2 harder than getting into the older grades? Surely there are roughly the same amount of children at each grade level? Wow it seems like schools are really busy again. :\: It's because FS2 is basically the first compulsory schooling point. Schools give preference to internal FS1 students and siblings of existing students so outside prospects who didn't do FS1, or did it at nursery, unfortunately have next to no chance. There are schools, like Jebel Ali, that don't offer FS1. HTH.

The best and most useful toy that we had for LO at that age was an activity A frame for nappy changing and batting practice. There are lots out there but ours was particularly good because the links were removable so that the hanging toys could be changed to keep baby stimulated. We got alot of use from the bumbo for both LO's. edited by BrownEyedGirl on 13/03/2011

He sounds like a piece of work! I think that in the absence of a signed agreement then the default position is that the LL is responsible for maintenance. Quote this RERA guidance and threaten to go to them if he doesn't pay in full: - 'Landlord shall, during validity of the tenancy contract, be liable for undertaking maintenance of the property and shall rectify any defects or faults that affect tenant's intended benefit from the property.' (Article 16, Law 26, 2007) Generally the minimum tenancy period that you can expect is 3 years, even if the contract is non renewable. Good luck!

I'm sorry to say that I'm almost certain you won't even get onto the wait list with those schools, but it's worth a phonecall. What about The Children's Garden? They are a (very well regarded) nursery but take children up to the age 5 so your LO could do FS2 there at least. You would stand a better chance of getting a place at a good school after FS2, which is the most difficult entry point. Good luck. edited by BrownEyedGirl on 13/03/2011

From memory I can't think of anything that would stop a wheelchair user from accessing the show. It's all on one level and the seating is very well spaced. The toilet is upstairs though. Give them a call if you need further details, they're very nice and helpful. It's well worth a watch, I can highly recommend it!

I guess social etiquette is a minefield in such a multicultural place but I think we've established that it's universally unacceptable to charge guests when you're entertaining them in your own home! I just couldn't imagine the embarrassment of asking guests for money let alone the actual deed of collection. What about if you invite friends out to celebrate a birthday at a bar? I was embarrassed when a lovely girlfriend invited me for birthday drinks and then insisted on paying the tab for everyone at the end of the night. When we did the same for DH's birthday everyone just paid their share at the end of the night.

I'm reading it at the moment, and surprisingly it's a real page turner! Some fascinating snipits that spring to mind: - Microsoft were incentivised to join internet city with a 50 year free lease. Slavery wasn't abolished in this region until the late 60's. Once the UAE was formed many went on to become Emirati citizens. Sheikh Mohammed is the most prolific purchaser of thorougbred horses in the world. Highly recommended!

I had a call from Du earlier telling me I owed them money. Unfortunately the 'gentleman' refused to give me any details as to why I owed them money or for what address but insisted I had to co-operate with him and visit a service centre in person. When I said I refused to visit anywhere without being told why it was thought I owed money he told me "I am getting angry with you". Lucky it was a phone conversation otherwise he may have been digesting teeth. edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 15/02/2011 Hmmm, interesting. I had an SMS from a company called Al Wasl International on Saturday telling me I owed Du 1199dhs and I had to pay within three days or face legal action. I've called Du twice and both times they've said I don't owe them anything, and the account number mentioned on the text was one I closed years ago. They said they wouldn't have closed it if there was a balance outstanding. I'm waiting for this Al Wasl outfit to call me back tomorrow. Something tells me I haven't heard the end of it but are they just trying to dredge up every last fil they can at the moment? These guys have been bugging us regularly over the past few months! It was getting ridiculous - I even had a phone call just the day after a bill became due threatening us with being cut off!? I normally go to the Du store in person and pay at the beginning of the month which suits me as I make an international transfer at the same time. Although it means that the payment is a little late this has worked for us since we arrived here! I got thoroughly fed up with having to make additional payments and contacted Du direct and complained. They've since stopped calling me, and having gone back to my original payment schedule, my services haven't been interrupted either!

After a prolonged period of arguments, strife and unhappiness (the best part of 4 years!) my DH is a changed man this year and I LIKE it! He actually remembered Valentines day today and woke me after a little lie in with a red rose, a card and a lovely little hand painted Arabic dish. For the second time in the history of our 14 year relationship he's cooking me dinner tonight and there's a chilled bottle of bubbles in the fridge too. I'm feeling pretty happy! :) Glad things are turning around for you. It must be a relief. I guess any long term relationship is a roller coaster. DH got me an iphone4. Very happy. Probably not very romantic but I am well pleased :) I am feeling quite bad though, I didn't even get him a card! doh!!!:\: Ooh, I'm jealous as I lost my iphone last week! :( What a lovely gift! x

We live in Springs 3 and really like it. It's within walking distance of Spinney's and this is so much easier now they have opened the other entrance! There's a lovely network of lakes which is great for the children and quite picturesque. We're paying 120 in 3 cheques for a 3E. I think that most properties with a lake view are type 2 or 1 which are larger 3/4 beds which come with maids room & family room. Have you been introduced to dubizzle - it's the best place to search for property. Good luck with finding somewhere and your move. :)

Weird I know but have you tried putting him to bed earlier? I always used to find that the earlier I put DS to sleep the later he would wake. They do say sleep begets sleep.
