I know there is a women's salon if you are walking along the marina. Its right by the popsicle shop a little bit after spinneys. Not sure if they do it. If they don't then I haven't heard of any place that does.

If you want to join Doha Mums you can come down to the Park at tower 1 on the pearl from 10-12 on Tuesdays. We do park playgroup for the kids and you can use it as event to join. As far as finding a babysitter sometimes you can use some one maid on thier off day. There are also some services that do babysitting. Not sure which ones though.

We rent directly from LS and never paid a commission. Here is a link to their info. http://www.lskeepmoving.com/LS/Default/Default.aspx As far as having a live out maid. I know people do it so it has to be possible but not sure about how that would work with getting the kids home from schools ect. Great advice about coming with a sense of humor. I sure needed it the first few months here. I know my husbands company puts people up at the Ezdan and you can do short term there. YOu might consider something like that so that you can look for something more permanent. I would take your time and find the right place.

We rent from LS. They rent alot at Sabban Towers I think. We have been happy with how they handle maintenance and stuff too. They also didn't hit us with a crazy bill for Qatar Cool which some people have gotten. We are only expected to pay for what we use (consumption) not the larger service fee.

My husband who is a finance person says its about 20-30 percent difference between furnished and unfurnished. I think it was about 2000-3000 but of course it all depends. Ikea should be opening at the end of january if that helps with furniture. We are all very excited about that! I think after about 2 or 3 years you save by buying furniture. The private beach is next to tower 31 but it is open to all pearl residence. We are in tower 9 which is part of Sabban Towers which includes towers 8,9, and 10. We like Sabban towers because they share a playground, pool and gym and there are lots of kids. Tower 1 and 31 tend to be higher end, a little more expensive but a little nicer. Tower 2 is only for Shell people. All these towers are in Porta Arabia which is the main circle with all the coffee shops and restaurants. There is another circle with towers, not all finished but some are nice. What you can do when you arrive is go into reception and ask for a quick tour and see what you like. We picked our cause of the playground and the area for the boys to ride bikes. Most of the restaurants and coffee shops are between towers 13 and tower 1. There are still alot of empty retail. Currently there is a few playgrounds open. A small one next to tower 1 and 2 small ones next to the other circle. More should be opening soon. There is a nice playground by ZIg Zag Tower and we use that a lot too. I have heard mixed reviws about Zig Zag. They had an issue wiith some windows falling out at one point which I find frightening but I know some people who live there and are very happy. Now that alot of the mall is open and they have a nice playground I am sure its very convient. There are also places at the Saint Regis that just opened although I have heard that it is more costly, very nice though.

Some more figures for you. A 3 bedroom with maid room, fully furnished at the pearl is about 20,000. We have a 2 bedroom not furished for 13,000 with no maids room. Townhomes and 3 bedroom apartments unfurnished run about 18,000. Maid pay runs 1000-2000 a month but Philippine government is requiring their maids get a minimum of 1400 but other nationalities are cheaper. Also if you are looking at being here 5 years it would be better to just buy furniture. It was cheaper to buy for us since we where going to be here at least 2. Top schools like American school, compass, ACS run 60,000+ a year and this is not counting transportation but you 3 year old could go to nursery this year which would be cheaper. You could also work on getting your 3 year old in some where which could be easier and once they are in your 6 year old would have priority. As far as facilities at the pearl most buildings have a private pool, gym and the pearl has a private beach. Is it worth it is really a personal decision. I think you have to do all the math and see what you think you will save

Ya things are expensive here but that is Doha for you. Things just cost more. You can homeschool cheaply though. You could always bring a few things to keep them busy while you work on school placement. My boys are pretty active so we do lots of play time. Right now the weather is nice so we spend lots of time outdoors and at the parks. IN the hotter season we spend lots of time swimming. It sounds like you are going through a rough time making your decision. Its a tough one. There are the positives and negatives to Doha but it kinda of grows on you after a while. I get to spend lots of time with my boys which I love and we are saving money which is awesome.

Yup school fees are expensive and the better schools are hard to get into. I think the most expensive are Compass, ACS and the American School. We started homeschooling last year because the company didn't pay them till this year. We continued because it was just easier. The school traffic can be pretty bad. I find homeschooling in the younger years to be pretty easy. You really don't need to spend that much time on school work. I think at this age people spend an average of 30 -90 minutes a day. My son is 5 and in Kindergarten. We spend about 40 minutes a day. I buy most of my supplies from Rainbow Resources. They ship to Qatar for 20 percent of your order as long as your order is over 500 dollars. I find it is pretty easy to get to 500. They have everything including art supplies. Stuff can be hard to find in Doha. There are some stuff but the school stuff I do find to be more expensive so I ship things in. There are book stores here but not that great and things are expensive. We ship alot of books in becuase my son loves to read. We also borrow alot of books from other homeschoolers. There is a homeschool group in Doha which was helped us out a lot. Its called Doha Home Educators. They have a site and a forum. They also do different activities for the kids which helps and my son has friends through the group. Oh and my kids are 2 and 5.

Hi and welcome. I have a 2 and 5 year old and live at the pearl. Newton is fairly close to the Pearl and I have a few friends whose kids go there and they are happy. I have heard both positive and negative stories about the school but don't have personal experience with it. Other schools that aren't to far to the pearl are Compass and ACS. We homeschool but wanted to say welcome anyway.

We have been at Sabban towers for over a year now and have been really happy. My boys love the playground and enjoy playing with the other kids in the evening. I think because of the way it is set up with the communal area we find that it has more of a community feel and we do know a number of our neighbors. My boys are almost 2 and 5 and they have a number of friends.

Thanks a bunch! I will check out the school sales. Thats a great idea! We go through so may books if the shipping is to high I just can't afford it. Right now I have a stash that I picked up in Thailand which should last me for another 6-8 weeks but after that I need more. I will look at amazon too. Rachel I have been to the Doha Mums one but I don't think its exactly what I am looking for. I tell you since my son started reading I have missed the library at home so much! It makes me sad because I know he would be so excited by all the books he could read.

This sounds weird but I would play around with your water. Try different brands. I would actually try drinking one the European ones for a few days and see if that helps. Also try not drinking water in the morning. That was what finally fixed me. I also found that I do better with some brands over others. My stomach didn't tolerate the ones that came from desalinated water very well.

I have breastfeed all over doha and have for the last 10 months. My son is 18 months and we are still breastfeeding all over the place although since he is older not as much. I do use a nursing cover but I wouldn't say you have to. I have actually seen a women in abaya nurse a baby with no cover at al ahli. You don't see alot of people nursing but its perfectly acceptable. According to Muslim law its a babies right to nurse until they are 2 so really no issue.

I have been using Karwa and they have been fine. Showed up on time or early when I pre booked them. This last week though its been a nightmare. Monday pick up at MIA park 1/2 hour late Wednesday pick up at pearl 1/2 hour late Wednesday pick up at zoo 45 minutes late Yesterday pick up at pearl 1/2 hour late Yesterday pick up at Sherton park gave up after 45 minutes The only time they have picked me up is when I have called repeatedly to see where the driver was. They claimed they had a new system and I should call before the taxi was due so last night I called 15 minutes early but they still never even showed up.

First off I would make sure you are eating enough yourself. I noticed at that age that my supply really dropped if I wasn't getting enough calories. You mentioned you were going to the gym. Have you lost significant weight. THat can also hurt your supply. Also avoid mint tea. They never tell you that one but I found that out during nursing my second son. Honestly if you are committed to breastfeeding I would avoid formula if at all possible. Every time you give your baby a bottle of formula you are telling your body to produce a little less. So slowly your body will produce less and less. You could try pumping and supplementing with formula. THis way you are giving your baby more and not hurting your supply. I would also meet with a lacation consultant in the area and see if they have any advice. Also to check the latch. Also how frequently are you nursing. I have always feed on demand and that has worked but it is a lot during those first months. Also I find keeping the baby close at night is idea so you can get extra nursing in at night to help the intake. Here is some info on low milk supply that might help. Love Kellymom as a resources. http://kellymom.com/bf/supply/low-supply.html Also there is a breastfeeding support group on Doha Mums that is meeting on Tuesday that might help. Take care, Melissa

Yup thats what you need to do. THe kids and I came in on visit visas. Then after a month still didn't have residency but renewed visit visa. Then after 2 months still no residency because of ramadan so we had to do the visa run to Bahrain. Basically go to Bahrain. Get new visit visa and go home. Should finally get residency this month. Goood luck!

I was talking to someone today who said that there are autism services being provided at the learning center. That might be some place to start. I know its really overwhelming at this point. One thing to focus on is that your son is still very young. Diagnosis is the first step and you can begin working on getting him help. Between the age of 3 and 5 children make tremendous progress so its really hard to say what type of school situation your son will need.

and to answer my own question. There are indoor playgrounds at most of the buildings. The ones at building 4 and 5 were the best I saw as far as play equipment. Most of them are an empty room. The best though is an actuall outdoor play equipement in Tower 6.

Yup we get a pretty decent shipping allowance. So far I was thinking lots of books, toys, and games to keep the boys busy. I am also going to get the next years homeschool supplies. I am already cloth diapering here so I will bring what supplies I have but might try and purchase a few extra things. I will join Doha mums once I get into town. THat sounds like a great idea!

We are moving in 6 weeks to Doha with our 2 boys (4 years and 5 months). Any tips for must haves that I should make sure I pack. Also anyone with experience on how delayed vaccination works in Doha. Is there alot of support for home schoolers?
