All you can do is, from a very young age (although it is never too late to start), teach them that nobody should touch their private parts unless Mummy or Daddy is with them, such as at the Doctors, and that if anyone does, they should tell you, even (and [i'>especially[/i'>) if someone tells them it is "just their little secret" or if someone tells them that you won't believe them or that a loved one will get hurt if they tell anyone. Keep an eye open and listen for clues they are trying to tell you something but don't know how, maybe they try to avoid being alone with a certain person for no apparent reason or don't want to go and have an overnight stay, something like that.

My LO is as bright as a button and it's not down to me, haha! She has watched Baby Einsteins, Peppa ***, anything on CBeebies to be honest and no harm done. However, her favourite thing to watch when she was about 9-12 months old was... wait for it.... the CRICKET, haha! Loved it, would stare intently at the screen whilst it was on whilst she would turn away from all the other stuff after a while. I think a bit of TV / DVD is just fine, obviously 'wall paper' TV is not the best, but an odd hour or so, here and there so that Mum can get on with some stuff or have a bit of 'me' time is actually good all round. Happy Mum = Happy Baby as far as I am concerned!

The only other angle I can think of for this (other than him being a selfish so-and-so or doesn't want to listen to questions about when the two of you are going to get married as well), and trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, is that he is thinking that with you being a bridesmaid he is basically going to be on his own all day and night, so what's the point in going. If it is a traditional set up, then he won't even be sitting with you at the meal, you will be on the top table and he will be seated with people he doesn't know... I could understand that he may not want to say that, but may be thinking it. Also, just a thought - Is he of a different culture to you? Would he find the difference difficult, with questions about what 'his culture' do at weddings?

Derien, can't add anything useful as my LO is only 3 (am keeping a close eye on the thread for ideas for when she reaches 7 though...) but just wanted to send you a hug and say what a lucky boy your son is to have such a loving Mum who isn't blind to the problem and is willing to do so much to help him through this time, whether it is hormonal or something else. He will be just fine with a Mum like you! :)

I can't recommend a trainer, but just a thought... your dog is definitely protecting you, bless her but when she starts barking does your husband call to her so she knows it is him and not a stranger? If not, get him to try it, when she starts up, just get him to call out "It's okay so-and-so it's just me ssshhhh shhhhh, it's okay", in a gentle voice that she would recognise, it may just help calm her. It's not a bad thing if she barks when there is someone outside, will certainly deter any burglars, haha, but it is obviously annoying if it is at every little thing. Maybe try the shhh shhh, it's okay, followed by a treat when she stops barking so she learns that being quiet is a good thing. Also - Do you jump when you hear a noise outside? If so, she is probably picking up on your worry and 'voicing' it for you both...

If you don't like taking lenses in and out every day, try the monthly ones, put them in at the beginning of the month and change them at the end! I have been using them for ten years and they are fab. I have quite bad eyesight (-5.25!) and it is great to wake up with perfect vision rather than fumbling for my glasses. CM, do you leave them in for a whole month? Does it not irritate your eyes? I have always wanted to try leaving them in over-night, but too scared to do it. Yes, you don't take them out every night like you do others. They are specially made for that purpose (continual or extended wear I think they are called), to be left in (you can't just leave ordinary lenses in). Have never had a problem with them. I of course have had to take them out occasionally if I have got something in my eye, just like with any contact lens but I don't even know I am wearing them just like with ordinary lenses. They don't suit everyone, if you suffer very badly from very dry eyes then they may not be for you, but I wore them in Dubai with the A/C and desert camping and never had a problem...

I feel your pain, my 3 year old does this sometimes and it drives me nuts! So now, I just ask her if she is a baby or a big girl. When she says 'big girl' I ask her why she is talking like a baby then because only babies speak in such a voice. The once she tried it on and said she was a baby, I explained to her that babies had to go to bed and not play after tea and that babies weren't allowed fish fingers, peas or chocolate buttons... worked like a charm! ;)

I don't know this case so can't comment on that but showing no emotion in not necessarily a show of hiding something, or of guilt. My DH rarely shows emotion, and NEVER in public. He remembers the last time he cried - he was FIVE years old. If he was stuck in front of a TV camera after something awful had happened to him or a loved one, he would simply stand there with a blank face... probably looking guilty!

I had my first (and only!) child in Dubai at Medcare, as nutty said, if I had been back home I would have been in a production line with hassled, overworked midwives. Instead I had a private room, was admitted when my water brokes (not sent home until I was much further into labour) which was wonderful as I was fairly aprehensive about the whole procedure to follow. I had a good few hours of labour, with the Friday Rock show on the radio and the gyne singing along and bouncing on my birthing ball! Wouldn't have had that in the UK...

I would check with his insurance company and if they say it is okay, then get it in writing. Otherwise I wouldn't risk it as it seems to depend on which insurance company it is / which police officer is involved (if there was an accident / incident) / what day of the week it is and what side of bed the powers-that-be got out of bed on that particular day...

It's less than 2000 dirhams a month for full time... It works out at about AED 8320 a month working an 8 hour day, there are big companies in Dubai who pay a lot less than that for working much longer hours. how do you get that? AED 48 per hour x 8 hours a day = AED 384 a day AED 384 a day x 5 working days a week = AED 1920 a week AED 1920 a week x 52 weeks in a year = AED 99840 a year AED 99840 a year / 12 months = AED 8320 a month I think that's the way you do it... although I could be wrong, maths was never my strong point!! :D obviously am being very blonde today :) Not necessarily, I may be waaaaayy off my calculations, wouldn't be the first time! I am sure some clever EW bunny who knows about these things can clear it up... anyone?! Am I wrongly thinking this is a well paid job when it is really a pittance, you've got me thinking now...! :D

It's £8.35 an hour which is way more than minimum wage in the UK (£6.08), so I suppose depending on what it was doing, it's not so bad. There are lots of minimum wage / need your own car jobs in the UK and look at the price of petrol there compared to Dubai...

Blimey, lucky woman! We currently live very close to Manchester and rent a house, run a car, have LO in nursery for a couple of mornings a week, pay the utility bills and feed ourselves for less than £3000 a month... If we had £5000 to spend a month we would be in heaven! Since she doesn't have rent, utility bills or school fees she must be living the high life to get through that amount, poor diddums is all I can say!

Am I supposed to feel guilty for giving my LO multivitamins?! ;) Wish I could use the "like it or lump it" technique with my LO :( Some moms are lucky to have a non fussy eater! Absolutely NOT!!! No guilt for any Mummy out there, every one of them does their best for their kids!!!!!!!!!!!! ;) Horses for courses and all that! OP asked a question and I answered it that's all...! But having said that, my LO would be fussy if given half a chance, all she would eat is fish fingers and peas if given a choice... she just isn't given that choice... just as I wasn't when I was little... eat this or have nothing. I started early, right from weaning and that's how it has been since! As I said, I'm a big 'ol meany!! ;) edited by Cheeky Monkey on 09/10/2011

If you can afford it, then I would definitely pay a little more and buy one. They are smashing, reliable cars, great in the desert, better than many bigger engined counterparts and hold their resale value pretty well. It was the first car I ever drove in the UAE and fell inlove with its little 'big' heart!

there is a poem. called "someone else" for the life of me, I cannot fine it. If someone has it please post... in the meantime I will continue searching. This one? Have you ever wished you were someone else? Someone other than yourself. Have you ever wanted to get away? To be someone else for a day. Does it seem like your lane is always jammed? and everything you do is always dammed? Do you always seem to catch the red light? and you never seem to do anything right. Do you try to make everyone happy, not sad? but someone always ends up mad.? If I changed my name Would you treat me the same? If I changed my face How would I see this place? If I changed my beliefs Would my mind be anymore deep? If I was someone else Would I wish I was myself?

kyliejoy, can't offer a home sadly as I'm not in the country, but just wanted to add my voice to those who know what a fab job you are doing (we met a loooong time ago for a few dog walks in the desert when my rescue's were pups) and bump up these babies. Take no notice of the uneducated minority who do not realise that you are actually [i'>reducing[/i'> the feral population by taking in and spaying these little ones and getting them into homes. Speaking on behalf of all the 'bin cats' I have had in my life (8 to date), THANK YOU!!

2 months back I bought 2 bottles of drops that you have to drink with water 3 times a day and 6 ampules for injection. One bottle for lymphatic drainage and the other improves metabolism. It helped me very much, in the first month I lost around 10 KG. You can eat what ever you want and at any time, your metabolism is still burning every thing! Yikes, what on earth is in it?! Sounds dangerous!

We all know what type of person did such an act, but unfortunately until he is caught nothing can be done. In fact even if he is caught i doubt anything will happen. These are the same specimen who throw kittens in highways. In short they are cowards who dont have guts to face anyone even half their size so they pick on cats and sleep peacefully thinking they haev achieved something on their own All serial killers started by torturing and killing pets and little animals ...... I wonder if someone will get the idea, and follow up on these kind of actions, stopping a serial killer in his beginning and give him treatment, is way much better than waiting until he make his first human killings..... I say him, as so much studies shows serial killers (the male ones) they always started with do this horrible things to pets and little animals, as it escalates eventually to kill humans......... Oh God. that is very scary. Some serial killers do start that way, but not usually by shooting, more strangulation or by using a knife. However in Dubai I don't think it's a matter of someone practising on animals before they move onto people, it's a matter of bored kids / adults with no regard for the life of animals. It is simply amusement for them. Either that or Dubai is shortly to become the serial killer capital of the world given how many animal shootings in different areas in Dubai there have been in the last decade or so.... but I'm fairly sure that's not the case.

Poor OP, she comes on here for advice, trying to help another human being whom she sees being treated badly and she gets jumped on. Maybe she would love to tell this woman to stuff her job on principal but not everyone has that luxury to just throw a job away, especially in the current climate, and maybe she is doing as much as she can... Good luck Helma, I hope you manage to help this lady, and if you can't, at least you tried.

We lived in Satwa ten years ago and sadly this was happening then. It is not really surprising that this is happening when some kids are brought up to treat maids etc like their lives are worth nothing, so there really is no hope for the animals is there? Until there is respect for humans, there will be no respect for animals. Thinking about Mickey and hoping for a fast recovery. xx Let's not bring the maid culture into this. My dog was shot many years ago in the "civilized" USA and there is not a maid in sight where I come from... Sorry, badly worded perhaps. Maybe I should have just said "some kids are brought up to treat other people like their lives are worth nothing". I used 'maids etc' as we are talking about Dubai and in Dubai maids etc are often the ones to bear the brunt of badly brought up kids who see their parents treat the home help like slaves and so the rot sets in very early. But I guess, these same kids see their parents treat everyone like they are beneath them, pushing into queues, trying to force other drivers out of the way, screaming at people who annoy them in some way, so what hope for these kids who can get hold of guns easily. Animals are just something to be used, abused and thrown away when they have no more use.

HAK, once again, I totally understand where you are coming from, but people must be responsible for themselves... Should we have someone standing next to the sweet / crisp section in the supermarket checking people's blood pressure and telling fat people they are going to die if they pick up another bag of M&M's and to step away from the butter Mr Heart-attack-waiting-to-happen? No of course not (even though in reality it would probably be a good idea), can you imagine the outrage at the 'nanny state' if that were to happen...

HAK, I understand what you are saying, but... I have my eyes checked at one place but buy my lenses elsewhere as they are cheaper. Same brand, same diameters etc, but if I had to pay to have my eyes checked again I wouldn't save money and if I bought them from the optician I trust to check my eyes then I would pay more for the SAME lenses... The thing is the second optician doesn't know I've had my eyes checked so I'm glad they don't all insist on doing a test! Also, it's not really his problem whether I choose to wear the wrong lenses or not, it's up to the individual and their common sense isn't it? Not sure that totally makes sense but you get my drift.

Mama_toto, what did you prefer between Thailand and Singapore? Cheeky Monkey - Mt Helena sounds very isolated but exotic, I would love that! St Helena is just an amazing place, think a small group of 1950's English hamlets, but with arid cactus growing areas, lush banana tree growing areas and stark, sheer, terrifyingly scary cliffs, all with their own micro-climates in an area 4.5 miles by 10 miles... Stick it in the middle of nowhere, a 7 day boat ride from Cape Town and there you have it... a little slice of hard-up paradise!! :)

The island of St Helena in the South Atlantic. It stole my heart and although it was a hard place to live, the total and utter opposite of Dubai, I would go back in a flash. The first car I drove in Dubai in 2001 was a 2 door Pajero (after years of driving a Clio in the UK!) belonging to the man who became DH, so I have a real soft spot for them. His was an old one that was even fab in the desert, better than a lot of the bigger engined fancier ones. Even with the battering it got as it was driven in the desert a lot, it never gave up. As his was old the AC wasn't fab, but I think the newer ones are better.

Just re-read your post and saw it was for your daughter, so you may be willing to spend a bit more. In which case... Trampoline / slide / swing if you have a garden Dolls house or similar with lots of little people in it to stretch her make-believe imagination (ELC has some nice things, the 'Boot' is a big favourite of my LO). A portable DVD player so she can enjoy some quiet time with a DVD.

Do you mean as in Emirates Airline's own clinic? If it is then I gues that must be a fairly new thing as when I worked for them (and was single) they dished out contraception like sweeties (and the depo jab as that is what I used to get), but I think they thought better that than a load of pregnant trolley dollies... If they start insisting on letters from husbands then sadly there is likely to be a few sudden leavers! It's not a new rule, it came in a couple of years ago, and it is a law thing not an Emirates Clinic thing. What could be happening is the law is actually now being enforced so people (docs and pharmacists) are having to comply. It was discussed a lot on here at the time - was seen as AUH making a statement....! Ah, thanks for that, probably explains it, can't see EK voluntarily instigating a rule that could mean they lose some of their crew to unwanted pregnancy!

Hi Ladies thought the newbies to Dubai would like to know that when you approach your doctor for the first time to ask for contraceptives, you will need to either take hubbie with or take the form they give you home and go back at a later date - you need his written permission!! The Mysteries of the Middle East! How bizarre! :\: Do you know if that a new rule? Do the pharmacy ask for a letter now as well, seeing as you don't need a prescription for them? May I ask which doctor told you that, so everyone can avoid them?!

Have you got a villa that I can rent from you?:) Sorry, only got the one that we lived in for a few years before we left Dubai with DH's job... :) that's why we look after it so well - it was our home, not a cash cow, and wanted a family in it that would treat it like their home too.
