Dyslexic people are always encouraged to join up their letters because the movement of forming the complete word, helps the memory with spelling patterns. Its a bit like typing your own name on a computer; your fingers remember where the keys are without you having to think about the position of individual letters.

You really can't think of anything you might have to get in touch with your next door neighbor for? Her tree is over your wall and the shade is killing your grass, she is dumping her garbage on your side, your kids ball goes over the wall..... she is right next door. :( I think that if your main reasons for communicating with me were to complain about my tree, my garbage and to retrieve your kid's ball from my garden, then I too would be a bit aloof.

It's my husband that has the sticky fingers in our house. Go to fill the car up, take out my purse to pay only to find that he has cleaned me out because he "didn't have time" to go to the ATM. Grrrr!

Absolutely. As I said, my nephew went through a phase of doing just that at around the same age. He grew out of it and has shown no further kleptomaniac tendencies.

In April 2013, residency rulings from HMRC will categorise expatriates as either A, B, C or D, to determine their UK tax liabilities, with A being a non-resident and D, a fully fledged UK resident. The residency test was due to come into effect this year but has been delayed for 12 months while a consultation takes place. The measures are expected to be included in the Finance Bill 2013 and take effect from April 6 of the same year. •Test A – a ‘Conclusive non-residence test’ – if certain conditions are met, the individual is definitely non-resident •Test B – a ‘Conclusive residence test’ – if certain conditions are met, the individual is definitely resident •Test C – an ‘Other connection test’ – if the results from tests A and B are inconclusive, the matter is determined by a combination of time spent in and a person’s connectedness to the UK. Test C operates a sliding scale whereby the more a person is connected to the UK, the less time they may spend in the UK during the year. The connecting factors include whether the individual has family, employment and accommodation in the UK, how much time has been spent in the UK in the two previous tax years and whether the individual spends more days in the UK than in any other country. As I understand it the new laws will not bode well with anyone that has property back in the UK or for anyone that educates a child in the UK. To be classed as A you need to have broken all ties with the UK. I would seek legal advice on the implications of having a property in the UK. So, if you want to send a child to university in the UK, could you be eligible for UK fees if you have some level of "connection" under category C? Or maybe a sliding scale of fees in line with your tax liabilities. Is that too much to hope for? friends recently fell foul of this "overseas student" thing but were eventually told that there is a clause in the small print that says if the child is living abroad purely as a result of their parent's employment then they qualify as a UK applicant... I think that only applies if the parent is on a temporary contract.

I am trying to get my kids into an oversubscribed state secondary school in the UK. We are unable to apply from overseas and there are no places available at this point in time. They kids are bright, have no special needs but will be living within the catchment area. If it helps, I am likely to be going over without DH for a year or more. I understand that each council has it's own rules, but they are broadly similar. Does anyone have any suggestions? TIA <em>edited by Chewit on 05/06/2012</em>

We were thinking of Sept 2013, and yes we do have a house in the area. Unfortunately, that would not be enough if we couldn't prove that we lived it. The kids would need to be registered at a local school.

I don't think that there is any relationship between the numbers on my dial and the actual temperature of the room. 18 degrees in one room feels hotter than 25 in another.

I picked up some sale items from the Home centre in the MOE and was charged over double the price at the cash desk. When I complained, she said that the sale had finished yesterday and that the prices marked on the goods no longer applied! Apparently the store was "in the process" of removing sale tags. <em>edited by Chewit on 22/05/2012</em>

Use my specially imported glass cleaning cloths to polish his shoes. TWICE. Well the first cloth was covered in shoe polish, so he obviously couldn't use that one again. Better to use the clean one.

I would avoid iceland on a Friday. We went last week and there were gangs of lads rampaging around; bullying the attendants, jumping queues, snatching peoples floats. Very irritating, but maybe we were unlucky.

When my kids were at that stage, a friend who was a qualified nanny, told me to stop all nappy wearing at the same time. No nappies during the day, at night, while shopping or on long car journeys. She advised me not to cheat or to put one on "just in case". Apparently it is confusing to a child if there are occasions when it is acceptable to let it all out but others when they must hold back. If there are too many accidents, then the child is not ready and it's better to go back to full time nappies. Luckily, my kids were, on the whole, accident free.

We have always lived in the same house. We have a local landlord who owns several compounds. He has dropped the rent twice in 4 years; once at our request and once for no specified reason. That was a nice surprise :)

It maybe depends on which shop you are in and how much you are spending, but I have also come home from Satwa recently with nothing but a very bad mood. The tailors are also a lot less flexible; walk out and they don't care. I buy ready made now. :(

Just to revive the original question, there was a fantastic article in the Sunday Times this week about how internet dating agencies have increased "homogamy"in relationships (people marrying versions of themselves). The internet gives people access to a much larger number of potential partners than traditional dating methods, this allows people to be very specific about their requirements. Apparently, there is are statistically fewer divorces among couple who have met in this way. Academics said that "Opposites attract, then they attack"...."the greater the differences, the greater the drain on their marital energy". It is believed that there are five traits. The more of these traits that are shared, the greater the emotional closeness. The traits are: 1 - sense of humour 2 - intelligence 3 - same interests 4 - moral code 5 - having grown up in the same area Interesting.

I had a letter from my son's secondary school this week, listing the vaccinations that he is due to have. I checked the Daman policy wording and vaccinations are definitely not covered. Does anyone know if the free clinics apply to children over 11 years old? We have never had health cards. TIA <em>edited by Chewit on 13/02/2012</em>

I usually just ask them to fill up the car, but they sometimes ask for a higher amount than is on the meter. Some idiots must fall for it, or they wouldn't still be trying it on. It is also worth checking that the meter is on zero before they start pumping. They have been known to help themselves to some and then tack it on to the start of the next customer's sale.

good call smiles, adult acne usually has some other underlying condition, but not always..... PCOS certainly can be a problem.. Mine is caused by PCOS, but the dermatologist still prescribed Curacne. I wondered if Dianette might not be a better long term solution. Unfortunately it played havoc with my moods last time I tried it.

just as an aside .. I cannot find Curacne in the BNF...(British National Formulary) So do you know what it is? Roacutane is actually Isotretinoin...! Yes, Curacne is Isotretinoin. Didn't they develop that to [i'>help [/i'>with depression? <em>edited by Chewit on 09/02/2012</em>

I am about to start on a course of Curacne (as soon as my blood tests are back). I wondered though, how can these drugs help your underlying problem? Presumably your hormones will not be altered so the condition will return. I think that I will ask the doctor next time I go in. Also, I am curious to know how long your treatment will last. I have been put on for 4 months, which seems a long time. TIA

I wonder how our parents managed to feed us with only 2 tv channels back in the day? Or how their parents got them to eat with no tv at all? We ate in the kitchen where there was not a T.V. there were 4 of us. We ate what our mother cooked. There were no choices and if we didnt eat we sat for an hour at the table then it was removed and we gt nothing until the next meal. If we didnt eat at that meal, it was removed and again, nothing until the next meal...we sometimes went to bed hungary :)...we are all alive and healthy with eclectic taste in food most of the time. Our mothers never ran after us to eat. We ate if we were hungary. Our mothers were not too concerned because they knew hungar would win over in the end lol.....so, stop fixating on what your kids eat, then, they might just surprise you if you ignore them, and eat! Similar when I grew up. I was just wondering, because it seems such an essential thing nowadays, and people seem to not be able to parent without the tv anymore.... We have no TV in our house, I can't be bothered with the fights. it has been 3 years now, and the kids have hardly noticed. We do have the facilities to watch DVD's and downloads, which we love to sit down and watch as a family on a Thursday evening. Popcorn, dimmed lights, the works.

I understand your pain! The Entertainer did a really good one last year, but didn't publish one this year. I did, however, find a Sunday start diary in C4. It is normal handbag size but I don't find that the layout is particularly good. I also tried to get hold of an EW diary, with no success. Not sure how good they are.

I was furious when one of the Moms at school told her 5 yr old daughter the TRUTH....DS came home with a load of questions because this girl had blabbed it all out. I told her mother that it was not appropriate....she disagreed and told me where to shove it. Anyway, TG for C-Sect scars, that got me a good escape for a while. What is inappropriate about the truth? This is not religion, it is biology. The subject is only dark and dirty if parents treat it that way.
