I would not use the post for any vital document, a courier would be best, Fedex is fine but expensive, if you prefer a more cost effective courier that's just as fast and reliable there's Skynet, have used them for years without problems. www.skynetworldwide.net

Most supermarkets have the mini butters in Lurpac brand, and I have often seen a selection small jams too in Geant.

In fact there are quite a few different 'styles' of Kaftan, variations exist in different countries with traditional interpretations of the basic Kaftan, there's the Khaleeji style, the Jilbab, the Galabiya and Moroccan style to name a few, the Syrian and Palestinian Kaftans tend to have distinct colours and embroidery too. So quite a lot to choose from actually beside the variations of length, type of sleeve, and cut being fitted or flowing.

There have always been much cheaper alternatives yet I don't remember the last time I was on a "quiet" emirates flight. Are they now losing business? Not on the routes where they have the monopoly, for example they are the only direct non stop carrier to Perth, so the flights are always full, would people use another airline if there was one direct for cheaper, I would think so.

You will find plenty of availability of Chinese food ingredients here even in the regular supermarkets and there's a supermarket in International City and an Asian/Thai supermarket in Karama, near Karama Centre too. http://doindubai.com/2013/04/11/new-chinese-supermarket-and-restaurant-in-international-city/

If you want elegant ones and cotton rather than synthetic then you're better off looking in the souq in Bur Dubai and Meena Bazaar as suggested rather than Dragon Mart, only saw really gaudy styles and colours in Dragon Mart.

Thank you for the recommendation for Dr. Donnatella. Went to her and I really liked her, she has lots of experience, 9 years working in the NHS before she came here. Yes, she is very patient friendly and really knows her stuff, so glad you are happy too!

Concierge used to always clean and press perfectly, used them up to a year ago and was sorry when they could not collect where we are now. I'm sure they would serve Tecom as the do the Marina, JLT and JBR http://www.theconcierge.ae/live/

Has anyone used Hala Taxis, are they reliable or just a bad as the regular Dubai Taxis?, need to be sure of an early booking to the airport soon. From what I understand they go through the same dispatch centre as regular taxis so I guess it depends on if the breakdown in communication that creates taxi unreliability is from the dispatch centre or is driver error. Personally I would book Careem to be safe. Thanks RuthM and Geordieexpat, will book Careem, has a suspicion Hala would be no better!

I never like using the CC at the petrol station because you have to give your PIN number to the attendant, at least at the one I use they don't let you work the machine yourself. No way am I going to do that. Are you using a debit card instead of a cc? Sorry, not sure if some special cc are required to use PIN for transaction, but all the ccs we have (from 3 different countries), we never have to have PINs for them, only swipe and sign. I use cc at Adnoc all the time, and never have to give them PIN though. Yes they do ask for the PINs for debit cars it maybe that the machine readers that are not equipped to swipe without PIN, but the thing is they ask for the PIN and don't let you operate the machine. and whatever card I would not want to give my PIN out.

I wonder if this means DEWA will stop charging 2% on bill payments made by credit card too. Not holding my breath on that one! Do they? Yes, They did the last time I used a credit card to pay my bill. I've just always paid by CC via my phone and never been charged extra. Strange!! I paid in person and it was written on the wall over the payment counter that there is a 2% fee for CC payments, maybe over the phone is different.

Alphonso Mangoes from India, banned in the EU for pest infestations are on sale in Dubai for at least 50% less than usual price. I was puzzled about the outbreak of small flies everywhere recently, wonder if there is a connection! http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/sweet-deal-alphonso-prices-fall-50-in-dubai-2014-05-02-1.547685 Shouldn't a pest ridden product be banned here too though? This post was mentioned on the ARN News this morning! They confirmed that fruit flies were not harmful to humans, just harmful to fruit - and that all fruit goes through tests/screening before being sold in supermarkets. Thanks for that! EW being used to source news as usual! The point is really that if they're seen as a hazard to the crops in the EU they must pose the same risk to farms here regardless of risk to human health, still surprised a pest ridden product is allowed in though! edited by Di@DXB on 08/05/2014 I read in the UK papers that the reason they were banned is because it is the oriental fruit fly which would harm crops over there as it is not an indigenous species but not over here as it already exists here. Makes sense to me. edited by Genie on 08/05/2014 That makes sense then, and does not surprise me!

Saw your post and was hoping it it's not going be like the Miracle Garden where if you take young children you can't even breathe without having a whistle blown at you. Click on the link and it's the Miracle Garden! I was wondering what those domes were. Sounds great, hopefully they won't assume that every child there is a little monster waiting to run amok. Possibly will be the same over-policing of kids then, I don't like Miracle Garden, its so plastic, but hoped this place would provide a real nature experience for a change..

I found a lovely plastic one in Home Box that feels and looks like fabric, its really elegant looking you would not be ashamed to use on the dining table even. I think they had round ones too, was not looking for that shape though. But a good selection of colours and sizes. Thanks girls! Will check out these places you have mentioned tomm. Di@dxb - where is home box?? Never heard of it! Ta x Its in Oasis Centre,, great value and nice home-wares and furniture, decor etc, well worth a visit.

You will need one of those sharp handy knives with retractable blade so take care when you cut the slits to cover the hand holding the tennis ball, I wear a thick padded oven glove to be on the safe side, or if you can find somewhere to wedge the ball securely while you cut it even better.

I have only used Geant once, so not sure how the prices compare generally, like you I was thinking it would be nice not to lug things home all the time, but found that there isn't the full range of items available online so I still need to go there to get some of the things I want, and the other problem is they sent several wrong items which I could not return. Plus their website is pain to use.

Salad vegetables are grown here too, and quite a lot of organic farms locally too who don't use pesticides, would have thought it as much a risk here as anywhere else.

my Corner sofa feet has sharp metal edges. I need some safety clips sort of things. pls help Tennis balls work well, cut an x slit into one side, not too wide and push the tennis ball over the foot of the chair, safe and cost effective! Looks quite fun too, you can spray paint them to match the chair colour if you like.

I was told today that they are changing the rules regarding sponsoring dependants as in family members, earlier the salary was a min of 7000, but they are going to raise it to 15,000 so this is also something your husband needs to check with his company. It was AED 4000 a month and is being changed to AED 10000.http://m.thenational.ae/uae/labour-law/families-hit-by-new-minimum-monthly-wage-rule-for-visas GN reporting is not changed at all now, still 4k as before. “So far there is no change,” the official told Gulf News. “Transactions are taking place as we speak on the normal Dh4,000 salary requirement,” the official said." http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/visa/new-rule-on-family-visa-sponsorship-clarified-1.1327711

There are three whole pages of very insightful advice and a wealth of real life info on this thread including a post by Admin with some useful links, so I cannot see the occasion for dismissive comments that responses to the OP's question have been [i'>"brief and lacking in info" [/i'> I disagree and actually find that a little offensive towards all those who have genuinely taken the time to help the OP in her research. Wishing the OP all the best with her decision. Well that wasn't what was said, was it?? What I said was that the OP's questions are often brief almost to the point of firing out a quick question and appearing slightly rude and lacking in the info that people need to answer properly e.g. where is your husband working? Answer ; Dubai. Quote "in fact the answers are so brief and lacking in info that I have wondered if this thread is not for real.." Don't see any reference to the OP in that sentence but if that is what you meant then your reply was not clear edited by Di@DXB on 04/05/2014 Agree and your interpretation was incorrect. You did not actually say "[i'>the OP's questions are often brief almost to the point of firing out a quick question and appearing slightly rude and lacking in the info that people need to answer properly" until your response to me above."[/i'> You may have meant it, but I am not psychic!

Doesn't Shariah Law apply anyway here by default in the absence of a non Shariah will? I have only been told that expats need to make a specific will if they don't want shariah to be applied not the other way round, is this right? I get its to increase traffic to the Forum but how will it be a better and more lively place when users think twice before posting, and I also think the introduction of the thumbs has made the Forum a less friendly place too and that runs contrary to the purpose and mission of the Forum as stated by EW in the "Rules'. "What the Information Board is for: Our primary intention for these information boards has been the same for the past ten years… to provide a welcoming,[b'> friendly forum[/b'> for newcomers and residents to share information about living in the region." Twin edged sword in both cases.

For food importation to a free zone you will need a JAFZA or DAFZA licence, virtual freezone licences do not permit food importation. With the JAFZA and DAFZA licenses you will need to clear cargo through customs, pay customs duties etc, to be able to sell the products in the city, so it could be easier and cheaper to have DED licence, you will need local sponsor for this. The DED have an online wizard that help you calculate costs. http://eservices.dubaided.gov.ae/Pages/Anon/Simulate.aspx?cpid=3000&PID=10101&LID=&sname=Estimated_Cost_of_Issue_License hth

Agree that hotel security was completely lacking in the London incidents, however I would not have thought the UAE would issue an official citizens travel advisory based purely on two attacks alone. There may be more that have not been reported in the media.

I'm finding this so ironic when I remember all the people lecturing me about moving here.... Agree, and now conversely its also ironic that the sense of security enjoyed here has lead to these recent tragic incidents in the UK. If this is such a haven, how come there are security guards in stores and you can't take carrier bags into them? And yes it is a " sense" of security... The topic is personal safety not store security, of course there are shoplifters everywhere including Dubai, but in general Dubai is viewed as a "safe" place to live in terms of personal security. I have never in my life anywhere in the world seen so many security guards in stores - why is that? Do so many people steal here ? Or is it all an appearance thing? I don't have access to shoplifting statistics in Dubai. However I think store security is possibly less obvious in the West than it is here so the perception here is that is heavier

Yes that makes sense, nicedaynat. I hadn't realized they had moved from Germany to Liverpool. Re: post code... I know this has already been asked but I can't find the answer. What do you put in postcode field if you live in Dubai? PO Box number? TIIA x I just put in zeros, same for credit card purchases too, that always works ok for me. Thanks Di... out of interest, which field do you put the PO Box number in? Just a normal address field? I did not put a PO Box number on the application form because it must be returned to a physical address by courier, couriers do not deliver to PO boxes, so I put my physical address only on the passport office form.

Was looking everywhere for it last December and never found any, it occasionally appears in Spinneys and Waitrose but I have not seen it for a long time.
