These came up on the Internet. [i'>Flooding blocks roads near Discovery Gardens - 12 Jul 2012 - DUBAI Mosquito menace in Discovery Gardens - 25 Mar 2013 Burst pipe causes traffic chaos near Dubai's Ibn Battuta Mall - 1 Nov 2012[/i'> Which was followed by this one that gave me the biggest shock of all. [i'>27 Nov 2012 - Chiller charge: Dubai's Discovery Gardens to become costly for tenants next year . Developer to .... Residents catch fish on street in flooded city.[/i'> ......but, it was few news taglines appearing together and it was the residents in China who caught fish in their flooded city. Fish would have been quite welcome! However add to this catalogue of plagues- the birds! http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/environment/crow-attacks-terrify-dubai-s-discovery-gardens-residents-1.1196480

I have noticed quite frequent flooding around the cinema area on my trips to the mall over the last year, seems this problem has been unresolved for a while and now resulted in one massive flood. Someone must have been aware of this problem for some time and yet its been left to reach this stage.

We still don't have a clue about what's actually going on. The flooding happened around 10 or something but I noticed there was something amiss only around 1 in the morning when the explosion in the dewa plant neat the Battuta china court woke us up. All this was around the Gardens. Some say there was a fire near DG too, but we really don't know. Hope no one's hurt. Oh my, dewa plant exploding sounds really serious, and the local media don't seem aware of anything yet. Wonder what if anything is being done about it.

Was at a mall on al wasl getting school uniform, but the store was closed; when i asked the shop next door if anyone was working, the salesperson answered"she'll be right back, she just went to change her pad"....euhhh couldn't you just say she's in the ladies room..when you think you heard it all!!! Whatever happened to the days when even a bathroom break would be described as 'temporarily indisposed!" :)

Di, I live here and there's still quite a bit of water. The mall apparently had to close down last night due to an electric short circuit. Would be best to wait it out a bit. Thanks stovetop, hope they are getting things sorted out and everyone is ok around there.

LTC really need to get a little better at appropriate information, was really amazed that none of the staff including the restaurant manager could tell me what any ingredients was in any of their dishes, explaining that the food comes to them ready made so they don't know what's in it! I really don't think that's good enough when lots of people need to avoid certain foods due to allergies or intolerance, So not surprised the FB page doesn't know when or where they are open either.

People are reporting scores of bird attacks in Discovery Gardens http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/environment/crow-attacks-terrify-dubai-s-discovery-gardens-residents-1.1196480 It's happening mainly around the Westzone supermarket area, so maybe avoid walking around that area with your kiddies.

The documentary is about how we, humans, treat animals. How animals that we eat are treated and slaughtered, puppy mills, the way strays are killed, zoos and animal entertainment, the fur business, leather goods, animal testing etc. It is truly shocking. I watched it because I want to be informed and make informed choices about what I eat and buy. Going by what we watched on this there seems to be very little left that we can eat without causing mass harm or suffering. Fruits, vegetables and grains are about all that don't suffer (and there are those who say they do) but then they are mostly genetically modified too. Having watched it what choices do you see for what you will buy in future? I agree Di@DXB, it is indeed something to think about. Being vegetarian (note, not vegan) could be an option. Buying organic eggs and dairy and making sure the animals where it came from are treated well is a start. Making sure that any cosmetics you buy are not tested on animals, even though, testing on animals goes as far as using monkeys to see how head injuries (from sports) will impact the animal! The whole world would need to be vegetarian to stop animal suffering, I'm thankful I do not eat meat, eggs or dairy milk, I do not buy cosmetics that are not Eco and animal friendly, don't wear leather or fur, don't buy pets and have always loathed zoos, circus and caged pets of any kind. But even that is not enough there are the medicines we buy, the cars we drive that are tested on animals and so many things that we don't even know about. This is an immense problem.

Without wishing to appear unsympathetic, there is no way under any personal circumstances (even those described here as the reason) that I would not report a maid or anyone who had stolen from my home and just let them go on their merry way.

If u have plain rice left over, fry an onion, set side, then fry a good amount of tomato paste (maybe 1/3rd cup per 2 cups rice) with garlic, then add the rice and a tablespoon of zaatar. Fry till browned. Then to complete it fold the rice into an omlette. It's seriously good. Taught to me by a hapanese houseguest many moons ago. Thanks Ginnee, sounds interesting! Is the zaatar a powder?

There's the monthly Souq today at Times Square from midday to 7pm, mostly arts and crafts of course but some activities for the kids there, such as the 3d theatre and toy panda rides, often some of the vendors have kiddies activities on their tables too like painting. At least it could be something to do that is free to enter and spend a while in a cool and interesting place for you and the kids.

How was the cheese Di? How does camel milk rate on the cholesterol scale, is it high because fat content is high? Also is camel milk/cheese lactose suitable for lactose intolerant people? (must google...) Cheese was a little dry and salty but I soaked it in water in the fridge for a while and it came out much better but at that price will not be buying it again. The milk is suitable for the lactose intolerant and the cholesterol is less. It's low fat and higher in protein, vitamins and iron than cow's milk. It does take a while to get used to the taste for some people. There's a very good book available at Booksplus called The Camel Milk System, it explains all the benefits f the milk, it's really amazing all the things it is beneficial for. Def worth a read. edited by Di@DXB on 11/07/2013

Got some in Union for 39 dirhams and it was totally vile - massively salty with an unpleasant, dry, powdery texture. Will stick to my hallumi Does anyone know if you can get camel yoghurt here? Never seen camel yogurt, tried to make some once but it did not work, camel milk does not ferment easily, however I made some camel milk ice cream last night and it was delish!

I have no problem giving coins to cashiers, I always keep 20 dirhams in my neat little 'Coin Bazooka' gadget and any extra goes into my purse to give as change. I find this works well, all my loose change is organised and I know exactly what I have to spare.

The Consulate does not seem to deal with visa enquires. It depends on your residence status in the UAE, if you are a resident here you need to go to VSF Global visa processing centre in Dubai http://www.vfs-uk-ae.com/ If you are here on a visit visa then you need to follow the proceedure as given here http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/countries/ For any questions you can call their call centre and they should be able to help. http://www.vfs-uk-ae.com/callcentre.html

Places that arent open for sitting down are usually available for take aways. The government gave business owners the option to pay for an extra ramadan permit this year to do take aways. Many more business will take this option this year in order not to lose profit since the rent keeps going up. Guess we will see lots of families hiding out in their cars eating take aways. Lol! As far as I know eating in your car amounts to eating in public as well. Not sure it's recommended as an ok thing to do in Ramadan. Its not recommended but if your hungry+thirsty and far from home what other option do you have? To my knowledge the only options are to find a place where you can eat in or go home. Eating in public can result in problems for adults at least.

We sent 150 kilos to Eurpoe last year with UN Cargo, they were a lot cheaper than any other company we could find, they ship to the US as well. What we found was in the end the boxes went with Fedex but at a much better rate than if we had gone direct to Fedex ourselves. Give them a try http://www.uncargo.com/ I have to mention they do not appear very organisied or professional at first impression and I was a little worried but everything did get there ok in the end. They turned up in an unmarked half truck and the guys did not speak english so I really wondered who was taking all the stuff!

The really high thread count sheets will be super expensive here, I always bring some 1000 TC sheets over once a year when I travel. Next best you can find about a 180 TC in most of the stores such as Homes R Us and even Geant supermatket, for which you will pay about a couple of hundred dhs for a queen size. hth

Hi, I have a big table and chairs we need to sell this week. I have advertised them on here and dubizzle but no interest. Problem is it is expensive, it is a marina table 3 meters long and 8 big chairs from the Warehouse we got made especially (thinking we were going to be here for years more). I am stumped as to where to go and we don't have much time. We don't want to put it into storage but we just might have to. Cash converters on SZR There aren't many places to sell home stuff here except flea markets and the above places They will take on a consignment basis only atm, also they will not take Ikea stuff.
