Just saw some advertised 1.5 kg for AED95! Is that the usual price? I don't often eat meat at all but having guests over soon who only eat organic, where to buy it that does not cost an arm and a leg? Third Friday of the month there is 20% off at the Organic Cafe Do you know what original price?

Where I live the ants migrate regualry and streams of them pour out of a hole in the wall that I have had filled with cement time after time, but it seems its their migration route and nothing has successfully stoped them except laying a track of powdered chalk across their path. Try chalk it's non toxic for pets and kids and might just do the trick.

Di@DXB, you've missed the point... whether you think underpants are for boys or girls, the point is they're called "under pants"... as in worn UNDERNEATH something... the pants. It's like if they were called "undertrousers" you would assume it is the garment that is worn under the trousers.... But 'panties' are not worn over your clothes so why do they not call them underpanties in the US?

Something that drives me batty is when people call shorts or trousers, pants Pants to the British ( who after all invented English ) are underwear. Imagine the embarrassment of a small English schoolgirl in an international school who was told to "just wear her pants " for games . I cried with shame for hours and it still haunts me. Just to stir the pot... Some of my British friends call underwear "Underpants". This would lead you to think that it is correct calling trousers "pants""... assuming that underpants go under pants. Yes because pants or underpants are the same thing in the UK. Pants are the ladies underwear and underpants are for men. In the US you say panties but you don't wear them over your outwear do you! edited by Di@DXB on 01/05/2013 Underpants were for boys but ooop north we called them knickers not pants Interestingly knickers is a shorted form derived from knickerbockers which was the original form of underwear back in time when it was a long underpant that reached the knee so I guess when they shorted the knickerbockers they abbreviated the word too!

Wikipedia says saloon is also "An Indian term for a barbershop". Interesting, so I guess it could have been worse and the signage could read ladies barbershop :)

It's probably another of those words/phrases from India - "good name", "do the needful", "parking backside" etc. Often words from one language change meaning/usage when adopted by another country/culture. Thinking of fanny pack - can have different connotation in North America to UK edited by marycatherine on 01/05/2013 Interesting theory, but looking at directories of local hairdressers in India I only see the word salon not saloon anywhere and they tend to use the word parlour more often.

I highly recommend Care Fare, their vehicles are reliable and clean, their service is great, and no funny business with 'imaginary' fines or salik. I used their office in Media City and the staff there are really helpful, they gave me a discount on the published price too. They may not be the absolute cheapest but prices are very competitive, I rented from them for a few months when I was between cars, having tried many other really cheap companies I could tell you a good few horror stories. http://www.carfarellc.com/ edited by Di@DXB on 21/04/2013 Really? What happened??? Thanks for the tip! What did'nt happen! The first company I rented from gave me a car that literally fell to bits as I was driving down the SZR! When I went to take it back they appeared to be clearing out their offices, I asked for my cash deposit back, they only dealt in cash not cards, and they suggested I come back the next day. Having a strong sense that they were about to dissapear I said no I need it now, I had sit for 4 hours while one of them went to get the money from somewhere. The next company gave me a car that veered to the left all the time, it was like driving a boat in a windy sea. I asked for a different car and they did not have one available that was any better. The next company delivered a car that had been doused in gasoline all over the interior, I pointed out to them that one cigarette would have incinerated everyone. The next one invented fines that did not apply to my rental and it took raising **** with their head office to get these lifted and to get my deposit back. The next company invented salik charges that I had not racked up and then six months after I had handed the car back swiped my credit card while I was back home for someone elses payment. Now perhaps you can appreciate why I recommend Car Fare!

Just to update those looking for beds. I checked out the Magniflex beds this morning, they have an interesting range of products, their Orthobamboo beds are made with natural material such as cotton mix bamboo fabric with hypoallegenic anti dust mite features as well as fire resistant and 10 year warranty. They seemed excellent quality, very supportive yet comfortable, I am now seriously considering one of these. They are made in Italy and I was told until this Sunday there is a special offer discount on all their beds. more about the OrthoBamboo beds here http://www.neo-living.com/ edited by Di@DXB on 26/04/2013

I totally empathise, some people take advantage of your kindness and you need to sift out your real friends from the users. A couple of my "friends" here years ago without cars used to do exaclty the same thing to me, expecting to be ferried everywhere door to door whenever we all met up and asking to be picked up from home and kept me waiting in the street for half and hour or more without a sorry, no wonder they never took taxis the meter would have clocked up 50 dirhams before they got in. The last straw came when one of them called me up at 10pm on a Thursday night and said she needed to go to Sharjah to pick up an item there. Seems you have had your 'last straw' moment and need to change things around too. I found the solution was when we planned to socialise I just told them I would meet them at the event or place and they would have to make their own way there. I then used to leave saying I had to go somewhere else and could not take them home either. It did not take long for them to gradually dissapear, do the same and you will see who your real friends are! edited by Di@DXB on 26/04/2013

Would welcome any other recommendations and ones to avoid! Intercoil made overseas may be good but I once had an Intercoil made here and never again, worst matress I have ever slept on. I woke up with pains in my hips and numbness in my arms every morning.

In addtion to your homeopathic treatment camel milk is excellent for the skin, especially for Psoriasis. Treatment of skin aliments with camel milk has been documented for centuries. Since Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition camel milk's high amounts of immunglobulins, vitamins and minerals help relieve the itching as well as reduce scaling after an attack. You can drink it and dab some fresh camel milk on your skin too, it's anti-inflamatory and healing. It's also important to avoid chemicals irritants in your skin cleansing products and shampoos. Use organic and chemical free products.

So true about indicating your intention to move resulting in being prevented by selfish people who think they own the road. Driving is manners and that says it all. Yesterday I was stopped behind a school bus that had its red sign out and flashing while it was droping kids off and an idiot behind overtook me and the bus as the children were stepping out across the road, thankfully they were not hit. He then drove off at high speed, I tried to catch his plate number but he went off too fast. Idiots like that should have their licences taken away.

There's some useful info in this article, basically the rule is “Under no circumstances can a free zone company in Dubai operate outside its jurisdiction unless it has a branch licensed by DED. The same applies to companies in any free zone in the UAE. Alternatively, such companies may appoint an intermediary to sell their products or services in Dubai, but the intermediary should have a DED licence,” http://www.emirates247.com/business/corporate/free-zone-firms-need-ded-licence-to-operate-in-dubai-2012-11-20-1.483832

Thanks TDB - very reasonable pricing. Will definitely have a look. Di@DXB - our current mattress is Sealy Posturepedics. Had it for about 14-15 years and it's still in great condition (we turn it every month) - we've been really happy with it. Where did you seen them in Dubai? We are looking for a new bed for our teenage son. The Sealy shop I know of is opposite Karama Central Post Office. They quoted me 6k for a standard King size posturepedic divan, it seems the best deal to me so far for what I need, am going to check out other places so if I find anything that compares or better will let you know.

I happend to pass a store today in MOE level one at the C4 end, they had some more upmarket souvenirs including lovely prints, wall hanging and other items. I did not get the name of the store but its on the inside corridor above C4. just round the corner from Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf cafe. Also there I believe there is a camel milk chocolate outlet somewhere in MOE. There's another souvenir shop as well on the first corridor over C4, they have tons of the usual souvenirs things such as coffee pots, and ornaments, and there's the pink camel shop near there too for camel t shirts, accesories etc all pink so would be good for the girls. Seems all my ideas revolve around camels sorry! hth

http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/environment/uae-earthquake-rumour-denied-1.1172350 And for further reassurance the USGS do not predict earthquakes globally anyway they have probability mapping for the US alone. Outside of the US they only report on them and describe areas of seismic activity. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) - the supposed source of the rumour - also denied the claim on their official twitter feed. http://www.usgs.gov/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=120&id=1658&artlang=en http://earthquake.usgs.gov/ edited by Di@DXB on 21/04/2013

It's a false rumour, there is no USGS report and the authorities have already advised everyone to ignore it. No one can predict an earthquake on a specific date. If that were the case we would have known about the recent ones beforehand as well!

I do all the things an Elite person would do such as "Enjoy high cultural activities such as visiting museums and listening to classical music Went to private school and elite universities Socialise with people who do a wide variety of jobs" Yet they class me Techincal Middle Class on account of my finances. I guess we've been lucky - in over 2 years here we've never had any rude or very smelly drivers (a couple have whiffed slightly but given their domestic arrangements it's hardly their fault..)...we did have one hilarious one driving through Deira once who fell asleep every time we stopped at lights - I only noticed cos he was snoring so loud LOL !! Yes I called the police and they said I had to go to the station to file a report and since I was already on crutches at the time I could not persue it further, so I complained to DT and all I ever heard back was the driver had been disciplined.
