Thank you Clairehdp I was thinking the same thing. Do you know how many days/weeks must be valid on her visa for her to be able to exit and enter again? Her visa expires 20th January and I was hoping to send her 10th December- 10th January. I have no idea but remember that you must get her an exit pass sorted in Dubai through the POLO office or she will not be able to leave the Philippines to come back. You need to get this sorted out in Dubai before she leaves for her vacation. Hopefully someone with more up to date info can help you on your question but I think, as long as she has the POLO office papers in order then she can come back into Dubai in order for you to renew her visa. Make sure she travels with copies of her work contract etc etc.

the chef house at the radission blu is good with a crowd. All you can eat and drink - i think around 225 dhs. You can then end up on the Tamanya Terrace with music and a great view of The Palm. Beachcombers at JBH - i'm pretty sure they have a drinks package there with food. Not all you can eat and drink but great atmosphere for a leaving do - the mexican, Loca, at the dubai Marine Resort. They usually have vouchers in the entertainer and deals on drinks there too.

I would go into Rera and ask for an earlier date. Make up some story that perhaps your husband has to be out of the country on a business trip or something but ask if it's possible. I would get my case in first for sure..... Get a file ready of all emails from him and from you, letters, etc that can prove and back up all your case. do you have any e mails from the selling agent arranging property viewings - if you do root them out and show them...... good luck Keep calm, be polite. He does have to give you 12 months notice and if he has sold your tenancy agreement has to be taken over by the new owner. As he has filed a case against you it sounds odd and doesn't sound like he has sold the property - he is perfectly free to sell his property with you in it as tenants but he just has to abide by the law and give you a years notice...... Purely out of interest - what nationality is your LL.

definitely send her on vacation before the end of her visa - remember to go to the POLO office for her exit pass so she can get back in to Dubai too with no problems and then do your renewal. A few years ago now I sent my housemaid home for her holiday but she never came back....... all her stuff was in her room and she was absolutely planning to come back to us but....her husband would not allow her to return to Dubai so none of us know what will happen when they return to their families. It made me realise that sending them back to their home country for their vacation (if that's what they want to do) is better to be done before renewing their visa - that way when they get back to Dubai you can start the renewal process safely and without any chance of losing out.

Just a reminder to all booking their maids holidays back to the Philippines - don't forget to get their exit passes organised before they go from the POLO office otherwise they may have difficulty getting back into Dubai.

I would find the dress, try it on and if you like it order it on line and get it sent to your mums house! that way - you get the dress at the UK price and can wear it when you are over there for the christening! There's no way I would pay the Dubai price tag!

I was totally misinformed!!!! emlsnre - THANK YOU for sending link - and splinters - I called in, and perhaps they did not get it! now pushing for 12 months notice frm contract expiry - concerned LL will pay tricks with lack of maintenance and hiking up rent - stand my ground. THANKS SO MUCH LADIES when you say lack of maintenance - the LL has to provide maintenance - so when you go into the rent committee please make sure you let them know that he is not providing maintenance - they won't like that either. I agree with emlsmre - definitely go in in person if you can. If there are a few of you you have a really strong case for everyone to get another year.

It's best to take what you think makes your house a home. We sent over about half of our house and bought the rest new once we got there. It really depends on who is paying for what. If your company pays for the shipment then ship your stuff, If you have to pay for it then you need to really look at what you have and work out is it worth paying for it to come over (bear in mind too that if you are moving straight into your dubai home you won't be able to wait for beds etc to arrive on a shipment). I bought the kids duvet covers and bits and pieces that were familiar to them so they could sleep in their new beds with their familiar covers but I took those things in my luggage. also depends on how long you are planning to stay in dubai. You can pick up really good priced second hand furniture as people are there for a short contract and sell their stuff when returning back home. anything that the kids are attached to or you feel will make it homely I would take with you. the rest I would buy in dubai.

Dr Bahgat at the Medical International Specialist Centre on Al Wasl road is very good. My little boy was tested as it was picked up as a potential problem at school. It was all paid for on insurance. He came out with no problems - just a typical distracted 6 year old boy!!! I liked Dr Bahgat - he chatted more to my little boy and asked him lots of questions - he kept on giving me those knowing looks like all was under control. I know some people don't like his bedside manner but for me - he was great with my little boy and my little boy loved him. I hope he's still there.

take copies of all the correspondence you have from your LL to prove he is playing silly games. We filed our case a few years ago now at the rent committee in the municipality building by the Creek. We had to go and pay the fee and then got all the details typed at the typing desk there into arabic. We just told the typing guys exactly what the LL had said and supplied them with the back up documents. we won our case - it was cut and dried. good luck - sounds like you have a water tight case too.

My nearly 10 year old boy gets as excited about money or a voucher as a chosen gift! there's always something he's saving for and if he gets money or a voucher he can't wait to get to the shops to buy it. I have just started giving vouchers but I always put them in little gift boxes or bags and wrap them so it's exciting to open - I agree an envlelope is pretty uninspiring to a child.

Safer driver might do it for you. You could get them to take you and then they drive your car back home - they could drop the keys with a friend and then pick up the keys from the friend for your pick up - meet you at the airport in your own car with your own car seats and take you home...... worth calling them - we used them and they were great but not for airport runs.

I went in with my maid. I seemed to be the only non-philippino there and everyone was looking at me. I was called to the front by one of the officers and they suggested my housemaid come up too - she was processed quickly - I'm not saying that is right - but that is what happened when I took her and went in myself with her. I seem to remember that she had to return 10 days later to pick up her new passport.

I am so sorry to read about your sister - I can't imagine how you are feeling. My friend came over to Dubai for what was her last holiday (she had terminal cancer). Some of the days she just had to rest and stay in bed and other days she was up to do what she called her bucket list. There were a couple of things she really wanted to do - one was ride a camel and see the stars in the desert. Another was have dinner on the beach and another was to go into the Burj Al Arab. I called everyone in advance and explained how ill she was and that I would not know for sure if she would be up to doing these things. Each and every company I dealt with in Dubai were superb. She did ride a camel and Desert Rangers took her in her own 4 x 4 gently to the camp when she had had enough. She had her bald head decorated with henna tattoo before anyone else came back to the camp. The manager at the Burj Al Arab was fabulous and let us arrive for drinks with just a few hours notice as the original booking I made she was not well enough to go. We all had a gorgeous dinner on the beach - again - we had this booked but had to cancel at short notice but booked again with very little notice. Everyone was kind and caring the hotels made sure we were met and taken in golf buggies. To see her face when she could tick off her wishes was fantastic. Our quiet days by the pool were gorgeous too and just chatting and enjoying each others company was special. Saying goodbye was incredibly hard and she passed away a couple of months later but knowing that she had done what she wanted to do was a comfort. I saw photos the other day of her and smiled remembering her fondly. Big hugs to you for the next week as I am sure there will be some really hard times for you but try to enjoy these special days. I love the smallprints jewellery idea. My heart breaks for you but I'm sure your sister is loving just being there with you

and yes, Clairehdp, every year I have either paid for her to go home for a month or given her the equivalent in cash. I actually think I've done enough now, I can't afford to have a months paid holiday wish I could!! Then you will need to explain to her that she has had her gratuity in allowing her to take her early holiday early rather than at the end of her contract. I would buy her a little basket of goodies for herself and a phone card as her leaving gift.

I am cancelling my maids visa and I have helped her find a new position here in Dubai. She has been with us for 5 years, salary 1900. I know by law I do not have to pay her any gratuity but what do you think would be a fair 'golden handshake'? If she was staying with you you would have to pay her a months paid holiday and a return flight home. If she's been with you for 5 years you have clearly been happy to renew her visa 4 times and presumably have paid her a months holiday and sent her home for a month - if she chose not to go home she was entitled to the equivalent of a ticket home so I would give her a months salary and the equivalent of a return flight home (find the cheapest fare). It's not her fault that you have decided to save the money on a visa and you want the house to yourself. she has probably worked out what she would spend the money on thinking that she was going to stay on with you. the absolute minimum I would pay her would be a months salary. If she was not great you would not have renewed her and presumably would not have helped her stay and work for another family.

Take things that make your house a home. Photos, pictures, ornaments. We did exactly the same and left our house in the UK so we had a base to come back to in the hot summer and furnished it sparingly - we shipped our dining room table and chairs, the kids bedding so they had the same duvet covers which made their new bedrooms look like thier bedrooms in the UK. It's lovely being surrounded by your special pictures and nick nacks. where are you in the UK?

Thanks, Claire. Do your remember how long after your Dad's death you went to her? If you don't mind my asking? i think it must have been 4/5 months after. I thought I was doing OK but then realised that I wasn't....she was superb and got me back on track. She keeps in touch with you on e mail too which is really nice. I wish now I had gone to her sooner but I thought I would doing well. i hope you are OK. did you lose your Mum? I seem to remember she was suffering from ill health. It's very hard to grieve when you are in a different country and all those who knew your parent are in a different country. What I liked about Sabina is that she confirmed for me that how I felt was a normal part of grief and a stage you have to go through - she's caring, gentle and an amazing listener.

We used alison at the Dubai Doghouse - she was superb and really knows her stuff. .http://www.dubaidoghouse.com/contact.html Not sure about how you would transfer her from UK to France and back again. It's a big thing bringing them in and out - can you not find someone there who could look after her for you. Failing that - I use a super cattery when we go away for our cats - about 35 mins from Heathrow - if you're interested in this I can give you their details......

I was a volunteer with sailability at the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club. they teach special needs children to sail. You don't have to be a sailor (but it helps!) as there are lots of shoreside activities you can help the children do. I used to do a Wednesday morning but if you contact them I think they do have some sessions in the afternoons now too. A great team of ladies (and a few guys too) and a super group of lovely children and their carers. I loved my Wednesdays I think I got just as much out of it as the children did! A win/win situation working with like minded people. there is nothing better than seeing these children get into a boat and feel free with the wind in their faces. They will be winding up the season soon because of the heat but you might be able to go to one of their sessions and see if you think you can help. they start up again Sept/October when the schools all go back. contact details are on their website. http://www.dosc.ae/sailability-volunteering/

Clairehdp - a very positive post from you and I'm really pleased you are happy with your move back to the UK but you have to appreciate that you are in a far better financial position than many posters on EW. You do not have to work, you have a home in the sun in Spain you visit 2 or 3 times a year so you can escape the cold and rain most have suffered through in the Uk this winter, you can afford to educate your children in lovely private schools and you can afford to holiday back in Dubai. This is a very different life from that many others would have to experience. We made the years that we were in Dubai work for us - we had fun when there but we saved hard and are reaping the benefits of not doing brunches every Friday! We don't go to Spain in the winter we enjoyed the rain and the snow in the UK! I didn't have to work in Dubai - but I did and I did voluntary work too....

I would be devastated if I had to go back to the UK...even the thought of it brings me out in a sweat, so I've never understood the homesickness some people (including friends of mine) have felt. Surely it makes sense financially to stay the extra couple of years? I felt the same as you suze63 about going back to the UK - the reality (for me) though is soooo much better than I could ever have imagined - I think I read too much of the Daily Mail!

Yeah I moved back! Really didn't know what o expect and mostly thought I would hate it as I adored Dubai but ....I have to say its fantastic! The kids settled back in a nano second. I'm so proud of the way they embraced such a different life so easily. They love their school and both are doing great. The choice of schools and colleges here are amazing - something for everyone and so many opportunities to do so many different things. I'm amazed at how much sport my children do in all weathers. We have 2 dogs now so we are out and about in all weathers. We have a great selection of all weather wear and spend so much more time outdoors compared to Dubai which surprises me! We've met some lovely new friends and have loved reconnecting with old friends and being back close to family is special. We chose to return home having lost both our dads within a few months of each other and flelt we were needed . It was the right thing to do and my mum who was absolutely broken without my dad is now doing well and comes and stays with us and loves seeing her grandchildren. My husband still spends alot of time working in Dubai and we go back very regularly on holidays to see our lovely Dubai friends and for the kids to see their old school friends. We also have a steady flow of visitors especially over the summer so life is really good. I am a member of a beautiful spa which is my little bit of Dubai! Having had the experience of living in both places I have to say ( and I can't believe I am saying it! ) but the Uk is coming out on top for us at the moment! Today we have beautiful sunshine, the blossom trees are blooming, the daffodils are out and it looks like we are definitely in Spring now. Coming from Dubai we are still loving rain, puddles and most definitely the snow! It's so hard to take the decision to come home. Ours was one that came out of the blue due to the grief we were dealing with. We had the chance to return to dubai a few months ago but seeing how settled and happy our kids are we chose to stay here and visit Dubai as often as we can. We may return there in te future with my dh work but I know that decision will be far harder to make than it was to come out before.. Treat yourself to a pamper day ( so much cheaper there than in the uk!) Make the most of being in such an amazing place. Visit some of the amazing places close by. If you think you only have 2 more years there - embrace it and make itt work for you. Homesickness is horrid and I hope my post doesn't make it worse for you but I wanted to let you know that if you really want to come back - it's actually a very nice place to be with plenty of opportunities.

I would say hold out for FS2. If your other child gets offered a place then your daughter should get sibling priority so put her top of the wait list. You will find that people have their names on many lists at multiple schools and I would be very surprised if a place doesn't become available. My little girl moved schools and the new school was adamant that she would need to go into nursery although the other school had a different curriculum and different cut off date so she was in a different year group. I had a very long chat with the year head and she told me that you never get the early years back - the learning through play is such a fun environment - I went with their recommendation and I am so happy that she went back into nursery - it gave her a really good grounding and she has flown and is very confident with her school work. Your little one will have quite a bit adjusting to her new environment so I would be in the hold out camp. Just be firm, polite and keep calling them to make sure they don't forget about you! good luck!

I'm not surprised she wanted to leave. OP regarding her day off you say 'When I finally gave it to her' - so how long did she have to wait for a day off????? Friday is the usual day to give as a day off - they get to meet up with their friends/family and go to church together. As others have said - she would feel lonely and isolated if she had a day off different to her friends. If we had something on and needed our housemaid on a Friday I would give her plenty of notice and often her cousin would come to our villa so they could still spend time together. If she worked part of a Friday (very rare) I would either pay her extra or give her extra time off. As it was a rare occurance she often chose the more money route.

how about speaking to one of the big desert companies and see if they can put on a private bbq in the desert with some camel trekking or sand boarding or something like that for you. Desert Rangers did a custom made trip for us a few years back when we had a terminally ill guest who wanted to go out to the desert but wasn't sure if she would be able to do the full dune bashing etc that they do on the desert programmes. They were absolutely superb at putting together a special programme for us.

hello everyone, DH went to the Dubai rental committee today and filed a case against the landlord. He was told that the Landlord was wrong in every aspect. We have a court date and I'll keep you posted on the results. Thank you again. Good luck. We did the same a few years ago now and won our case and I know many people who have done the same. Tenants are protected and if the rent committee advised you to file - you should be absolutely fine. It's actually a very interesting part of Dubai life!

How old are your children and where will you/DH be working? Maybe people on here will be able to give you useful advice. Are you aware that school places for some age groups are particularly hard to find at the moment? Most schools term ends for the current academic year by 28 June. Are you looking at putting them into school for the last 6 weeks of the year or looking for September? I guess it could be a very long hot summer here if they dont know anyone. Ramadan will be from around 10 July to 10 August. Many expat families leave Dubai for a significant portion of the July-August long summer break. There is a lady in Dubai who just works helping families to find school places but I can't remember her name. I am sure someone will post her details. Good Luck with your move! edited by plum2 on 18/04/2013 It's Fiona Coutts 050 544 8916
