Whether it is more or less expensive all depends on what you want to do, not sure I can really compare in the general sense but I can give you examples. Also depends how much disposable income you are left with after Tax. For 18month LOs, there should be lots of organised coffee mornings and play groups in village halls. I never went but believe they are quite cheap. Or you could organise your own playdates once you are settled and made some nice mum friends. Parks and woodland walks in the spring or autumn are free (the latter depends on local knowledge), as are the parks and beaches in Dubai - both weather permitting. Ballet. I paid £58 per term last year. Here, I pay AED 780 (£130) per term - that's more than double. Swimming lessons, I paid £120 per term. Swimming in UK, you have to pay to go to the public pools, about £4 each. Here it's generally free either at school or at the apartment/villa community pool. Legoland or Alton Towers is about £37, child gets a discounted price. I thought music lessons are expensive and difficult to find out about in the UK, unless it is done through the school. E.g. where we lived, I don't know of music centres as they have here - with dedicated music rooms and teachers. For picnics, would suggest you join the National Trust and you can visit all those lovely stately homes and gardens. Claire, we're really going to miss you around here. I hope the move goes smoothly and that your kids make the transition without too many problems. Surrey is lovely - so close to the coast and so close to London! The best of both worlds! The opportunities are endless for children here in the UK. There are an unbelievable amount of clubs for children fencing, judo, ballet, swimming you name it we’ve got it. My children do lots of things at school taekwondo, swimming archery, dance, drama to name but a few. Out of school they do piano, martial arts, football and gymnastics. All activities are taught to a high standard, My 9 year old son has just been scouted for Arsenal football club he would never of had this opportunity had we stayed in Dubai. I find that their piano lessons are expensive but all the others are free or minimal money. My sons local football club is £ 2 per week for 2 training sessions and a match on a Sunday. All the activities at school are FOC. I pay £5 per week for a private martial Arts lesson at home. Dance is £48 per term. If you have younger children there are lots of things you can do from memory there’s boogie babies, kinder music and gymborie. There are also Mothers groups all over the country. During the summer there are summer camps for 3 – 16 year olds prices range from £3 a day to £15 per day depending what camp you choose. We live outdoors bike rides, sledging in the snow, picnics by the river, fishing, visiting the big Parks in London, going for long walks in the country, taking the children to all the Theme Parks, going to the seaside, feeding the ducks at the lakes. There’s sooooo much to do for fee here I am sure you will be very happy. edited by tally-ho on 01/07/2011 sounding good tally ho - now I can't wait! Frenchy - you will find lots of mums groups once you know where you are living. Often the local churches have halls that are rented out for play groups. I used to take mine when they were little to a lovely group of mums who met at the local baptist church hall (you didn't have to be religious!) The Drs surgeries also usually have lists of mums groups who meet or they will have a health visitor who will be able to give you info on groups. There are also council run swimming pools where you can sign up for summer camps and swim lessons. Or - just find a lovely park nearby and you'll find lots of mummies there with their kids - I bet you make friends really quickly. good luck!

another really great holiday would be to charter a yacht with crew and sail around the Grenadine Islands - happy hour at Basils Bar on Mustique, amazing home made ice cream on Bequai, cocktails in the bar on Petit St Vincent, fresh lobster cooked over a fire on the beach but delivered to your yacht at Tobago Cays - and a caribbean jump up on whichever island you hear the music!!!!

How much do you want to spend? I was wondering about a movie ticket each? You could stamp your DSs handprint on the back and write something like below. You could wrap it around a chocolate bar or something with a blue ribbon. Just explain to the mums "I'm sure you're sick of all the rubbish in party bags, hope this helps over the long Summer break". I would have asked to see the Manager and most definitley not have shouted at the poor waiter who only served the food - had no hand in cooking it. Uncooked chicken is dangerous especially for little ones so the chef needs to know - but there are ways of doing this and sounds like she just needs some manners and a chill pill......

The Deal is that to obtain the municipality tag you have to get the jab annually, however, you can enter the uk so long as the vaccine is valid in the passport. Emailed DEFRA to check, got confirmation so the vet was actually incorrect in his belief. We got the three year vaccine so are good for re entry until 2012. It doesn't matter what DEFRA says...........the animal has to get clearance from UAE to get on the plane. And as per UAE law.......it's annual vaccinations. Ridiculous but, aren't so many things? Exactly - this is what I have been told - it makes no difference to what the UK people tell you - so just keep the vaccs up to date and don't go 1 day over and all will be fine. It's to do with them leaving here - not arriving anywhere else.....so emlsnre as you have decided to comply with the UAE local requirements you will be absolutely fine. I have friends who have left here and were not aware of the local requirements and their pets have had to remain here with friends before being allowed to fly out. another crazy little Dubai ism!

Which of the two is better for 3 year olds? My friend has a 5 year old, so would the Mina a Salaam be better (as he would be free)? Dare I ask, but would Spice Island be better with young ones? Thank you:) I love Spice Island and the kids have so much fun there and they love decorating the cakes but it's sooooo different to the Al Qasr and Mina a salaam brunch - can't really compare - over all 3 I would choose Al Qasr but that's my favourite one anyway and the one we are going to for our last Dubai brunch before returning to UK for ever!

Yes - the vet is right which is bizarre because from the UK we were told the rabies jab is good for 2 years but the agent we used for clearing here in Dubai made a point of telling me to set a date in my diary to get the rabies shot every single year before the year is up - one day over and it all reverts back to tests and delayed departure.....thank god I used her! These new rules don't come into effect until Jan next year though.... There are rabies vaccines available that last for one year, and then there are some that last for 3 years. In Dubai the rule is to have the rabies vaccination done every year, regardless of the fact that the current vaccine is valid for 2 years. Its a bit silly, but what can you do? The problem is that many people are not aware that you have to re vacc every year here and it can be devastating to find out too late.....

That's really interesting, I was having a panic last week. I brought my lads out here last august from the uk, so had the rnatt tests etc and all jabs. However, took them for the annual booster and the vet told me that because they hadn't been vaccinated this year for rabies I would need to have them jabbed and then blood tested and wait six months before they could leave. I explained to him that actually the vaccines they had did not expire until 2012 and the passport validated this, he was adamant I would need to go through the whole process again. I know its really hard especially as you’ve lived there so long. Your kids will love it here my youngest only really lived in Dubai but he really enjoys living in England. So Im sure yours will be the same. I would love to meet up. Where are you going to be living? Well - not one to do the simple thing and move back - we are in the process of buying a new house!!!!! So plan is to move back to our house in Hampshire, pack that up and get into the new house before the container arrives!!!!! that house is in Surrey - so - if it all goes well that's our plan...... will contact you towards end July and see if we can get together! xx

Ah, yes - Beyblades. That's a name that's cropped up recently. Moustique, it's his birthday soon so I want to surprise him (with the wrong thing LOL!). Maybe he does need to choose himself. Take him in and just follow him around the toy shop my 8 year old points out everything to me that he'd love so then you'll know. For real kudos get him beyblades too!!!!

Go for the starter kit and see if he really gets hooked then you can add to it. I thought Bakugan were coming to an end my boy is now into beyblades so don't spend a fortune as he'll want beyblades next and the bakugan will be forgotten!!!

The last day was ok because it was crazy trying to collect both kids at the same time and saying goodbye to so many people in the corridors the day before was the hardest one for me as it all hit me and I felt really really sad to be leaving the school, the villa , my friends and Dubai....... Or maybe domestic working visa has different rules. I don't really know, but just thought NI was worth mentioning to keep in mind. Someone (either you or her) has to pay it. Yep your right someone has to pay ni so still needs to be factored in .

Don't forget you will also have to pay employers National Insurance contributions for her too. No always, The last girl I had paid her own NI and tax herself. Yeah we had a lovely philipino lady who we employed as a carer for my mother in law and she paid her own ni and tax it was super easy - she was wonderful and came highly recommended through a friend.

we have just booked the one at Mina a Salam - kids under 10 completely free throughout the summer and adults with Entertainer vouchers - couldnt be better :) Oooh didnt know about the kids thing where did you see this. One thing to consider taking your helper from here is that the homes are not built with maids quarters and you have to pay at least the minimum wage for her which means she will be aid a whole lt more than she earns over her. There are many who have au pairs to help with Childcare so this is an option for you. If your helper has family and friends in Dubai it would probably be better for her to stay here as there probably won't be many of her fellow countrymen to get together with and she may well end up very lonely. Where are you going to be in the Uk. Some of us might know people we can put you in touch with for help with everything. We are relocating back in a couple of weeks and I've re-engaged my cleaner, my ironing lady, my babysitter and my gardener so life will not be too different! There are cleaning companies like Molly maids who work in the Uk. Good luck and let us know where you are heading too as we may well be able to help you with recommendations.

I can't answer all your questions as I'm not on the villa but is not 'far out'. There is a big new spinneys approx 6 minutes drive away and Mirdif city centre with a huge carrefour amongst other great shops and restaurants and multi screen cinema plus kids activity centres is a 10/15 minute drive away. Festival city is also close by and 20 minutes you are at Dubai all/ souk al Bahar and that whole area of Dubai. 20 mins from the beach too. It is looking really nice in the first phase as the landscaping has been done. Don't think community facilities are there yet but there's a lovely community spirit there. Your shipping company should give you a list f what can/can't be put into the container. We took nothing as I'm sure that's what we were told and anyway everything gets sooooooo hot you really wouldn't want foodstuffs in there. Plus you need to buy stuff when you get Herr and are waiting for the container to arrive. I'd use the room fr more personal items so that your villa/apartment really feels like your home.

LOL....sounds like a plan Oh, and whilst you're visiting the Natural History Museum in South Ken, you might as well take them to the Science Museum and maybe even the Victoria & Albert Museum. Also, Horrids (Harrods Dept Store) in Knightsbridge, just to say you've been there.. Maybe get a bit of a picnic from the Food Hall and come back with a green and gold carrier bag :) Sorry, you've got me going now - Food Halls of London Not To Be Missed: So, we have Harrods in Knightsbridge, Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly (actually, I understand Afternoon Tea at the Fountain Restaurant is a goody!) and Selfridge's Oxford Street. Gosh, I'm almost homesick ;) love all of those places and it's my old stomping ground but I'd not take my kids shopping and most definitely not do a london afternoon tea with little ones. The things mine have loved doing are Imperial War Museum, Natural History Museum, Tate Gallery, Science Museum, big bus tour which includes a boat on the thames and the london eye. we ran out of time but I'd recommend doing the London Duck Tour - http://www.londonducktours.co.uk/

Do those of you who pay these amounts - 6/7/8000 etc pay this yourself ? ( ie as opposed to your company paying).. Yes we pay all our own bills. I think many people do now - it's not like it used to be where so many companies picked up all the utility bills.

If you're taking a place at Repton I would highly recommend looking to live closer to the school. We moved to Arabian Ranches and the school run is a doddle. We lived in Jumeirah Islands before and although the school run was OK you just can't compare it to the quick and easy nip down emirates road. Since you were last here There are some gorgeous developments that are now open and would give you a newer property and a really great easy school run - ie Victory Heights, Green Community Motor City, The Villa, City of Arabia, Cedre Villas. I would never move back to the Meadows/JI area with kids going to school at Repton (even though I loved it there). AR is far more central and since the roundabout has been replaced it's a breeze to get to most places. We see far more of Dubai from AR than anywhere and if you end up with kids in 2 different schools especially if the other is Mirdif then that would make Meadows even worse for you. Just one thing - you could consider the bus for your yr 7 - the Repton bus goes from all over now.
