I would have thought Jambase would be better. Noodle House is great food but upmarket fast. If it's your birthday Jumeirah usually do a cake for you. How about Trader Vics at madinat they're good for birthday celebrations and you can have a boogie too!

Another thumbs up for Abda at Spice and Aroma..... Delicious food and what she doesn't know about Indian cooking probably isn't worth knowing. She also runs thai cooking classes at Siamin restaurant in the marina - they were really good too.

Do they have their alcohol licence yet? Last I heard they still did not have it. I'd try Belgium Beer Cafe -that's always good fun and reasonable. Vouchers in entertainer book.

I agree with all you say q_s_j, except that the current owner/LL should be paying the moving fees. It's not the new owners' fault that Suzy and family have to move. The current owner should not have leased the house in the first place if he knew he was selling. Absolutely agree - the previous owner has to dig deep and pay compensation to the tenants. he should never have put the property on the rental market if he was so close to a sale.

When I first came to Dubai they were laying the grass at Emirates Golf Club and it felt like a day trip down Sheik Zayed Road - there were also a couple of camels on the SZR! It took us hours and hours to get to Fujeirah for lunch and it turned into a whole day out!

Another vote for the fabulous Juree. She is Thai and cook mostly organic. My experiences were the same as Claire and I still cook Thai food at least twice a week. Once you learned from Juree you can cook most any Thai dish - authentic style. She also donates the majority of her income to charity and caters for many functions, school faires and sells from home. those were the truly great Dubai days weren't they SS! <em>edited by Clairehdp on 27/06/2011</em>

I agree with Heyjude. If you can wait for another 2 weeks there will be so many empty places available as the schools finish and those of us who are leaving for good pack up and go. Perhaps post on here exactly what you are looking for and people can put you in touch direct with their LL. You end up with a good LL and no agent fees that way. You may well find that you end up in a better/nicer/cheaper place. Desinitely worth doing now before all the new influx arrive and start looking for their new homes. good luck.

You have to be given a years notice. The new owners won't be able to move in until your lease is up. I think I would cut a deal though and get the ll to pay your removal costs etc and agent fees and move but legally you don't have to.......

You've done the hardest bit by holding you hands up and asking for some help. Dr carol smilie at the Dubai London clinic is extremely understanding and will be able to advise you on who would be best to help you. Knowing you need help is the hardest part and you've done that. My friend was anorexic but made a great recovery as soon as she had the courage to ask for help. I admire you and hope you get someone to help you through this. Please let s know how you are progressing xx

I did thai cooking with Juree who is in the Meadows. It was fantastic fun - Juree is absolutely delightful and passionate about healthy option cooking. Met some great people at her classes too and we all ate together after her class. Great thing to do. ......if you use the search facility it will give you lots of recommendations http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=76499 i've also done indian cooking - first with a great friend who is now back in the UK and then I did the cooking course with Abeda from Spice and Aroma. Abeda is fantastic. I loved her classes and again learnt so much about ingredients, the healing powers of herbs and spices and how to cook delicious indian dishes.

We went to the sky bar, the website did say 395, however, when they emailed the confirmation it clearly stated 425. There were a couple of ladies arguing with them about it, but as they had been sent confirmation weren't getting anywhere with them. Oh well....it's still pretty special though!

We went last month and were charged 425 each. wow - If it's on the website at 395 which is what we have always paid I'd be pretty miffed or did you have an extra glass of bubbles? Was it in the sky view bar or somewhere else - do they charge more for the tea with the chocolate fountain maybe?

i'm pretty sure the marriott courtyard green community do that. Emirates golf Club often have events around the pool area - worth a call. Arabian Ranches Polo club might...... Grand Hyatt does. Worth calling Media One hotel as I think they do too. Maybe the Pullman at Mall of emirates do something as they are pretty new might be happy to do a good deal. Barasti have cleaned their pool - they might do something...... Have fun whatever you do - share the info too as it could be useful.

So..in theory... we now can't recommend doctors, maid agencies, removal companies, events etc etc We can't enter into inane banter and chat We can't arrange meet ups We can't post email addressed So what CAN we do? Are you serious? I've clearly missed something. I recommend the same people over and over based on personal experience and in answer to someone looking for recommendations. After all this is a forum for people to ask for information. It will be very quiet on here and their ad revenues will drop if people can't help and recommend or they will just move on to some of the other sites who encourage sharing of info and meet ups. It's a shame but this does happen from time to time on here it's usually a keen new moderator.

Hi I think there are some quite detailed threads about this in the archives but off the top of my head from last year we did our maids visa again in Dubai having moved from Al ain (where it is a lot cheaper) I would suggest around the 7000dhs to 8000dhs for visas, medicals etc.. you lose track because you shell it out gradually, the biggest chunk being 5000dhs to immigration and then the deposit (which I think is calculated on your maids monthly income). Some ladies have quoted more, but I'd say give or take I did if for three threes in abu dhabi and dubai hopefully not too far off. Monthly salary depends on what you and your maid agree, but some nationalities do legally have minimums set.. I think this particularly applies to maids from the phillipines. Salary range is quite controversial on the EW board , but I have seen anywhere from 1500 to 3000. Flights home depend on obviously countries of origin- for example year before last I got a special and it cost me 1300dhs for a return flight to Ethiopia rather than 2000, so off she hopped for a holiday as it suited both of us. I believe legally (this may have changed) its every two years you need to give a vacation but some people choose yearly. We did, sometimes she would negoiate different times which if we both agreed it was fine. First aids course is a great option and my maid also took an online English course with Eton which I paid for, but that was because I could tell she was bored and really wanted to improve her English and her confusion over my English drove me batty. Things like that are things you might personally decide to negoiate and do with her.. for example I gave her two days off on the weekends so I could have some empty house time if DH took DS to swan in my robe and make a cuppa and toast in peace or we could have family time and she could go to her church, visit her mates and her sister. So its quite a variable field the ole maid track and there are a few land mines to look out for sure.;) I was very lucky that I knew the lady before and had seen her in action over a long period of time that I was comfortable to have as a live in. I have to say we are out of the Emirates now and while I understand the care and concern people have over maids, I'd rather have the help of our previous maid then some Au pairs I have observed here in my home country in action. Good luck! Oh yea, forgot but like Miss Piggy we gave money at Xmas too and we gave her a bonus when she took her trips home, again thats up to you I guess.. your not obliged to legally or anything. edited by chance on 24/06/2011 The only thing I would add to this is that it's an annual flight home now or money equivalent and you need to buy a govt health card which is around 300 dhs.

UHT cream would be fine but I have recently discovered the little tubs of Al Marai cream - blue for full fat. They are only about 4 dhs each and no need to whip the double cream as it is already thickened. I use the Almarai cream all the time - it's fantastic - real fresh cream. I agree babapapa the double is so thick it doesn't need whipping. shame they don't sell them in bigger pots. Sugarbeach - this cream is like the Marks and spencer thick double fresh cream

I was busy paying for my treatments at the salon's counter when a well dressed, young (early to mid 30's) British guy walked in and very loudly and arrogantly DEMANDED the poor philipino lady (that was clearky busy with me) to give him vouchers for the salon. He was clearly in a rush but does that give ANYONE the right to talk that way? I wonder what his parents, especially him mom would have thought if she saw him behaving in such a manner! I'm only 26 but felt like wacking him across the ear myself! I have been in the Middle East for almost 4 years now, 3.5 of those in another much smaller country where expats are the minority but still tented to act the same way. Seriously, what is it with people thinking that they've made it in life just because they now have a villa with a maid and swimmining pool?! I'm SO fed up with the way these low lives behave here! There is SO much discrimination and mental abuse here that it's just plain sad. I suppose what rattles me the most is the thought that if these people were back in their home turfs I seriously doubt they would talk the same way they do here! Ok, rant over! :( Did you not pull him up on his rude behaviour? I would have done and do often. It makes you feel so much better and the staff who they are being so rude to are always so grateful to you helping them. I cannot stand rude, arrogant people. Next time - be very polite and just point out that the person is dealing with you and that you feel sure she will help the rude person when she is finished with you. I also have a look that I give these type of people too and an exasperated look with a little shaking of the head that I can't believe a fellow country man can be so rude.....seems to work a treat. Often the person apologises and is all meek and mild! I might start courses on how to silence rude arrogant people! Might make the world a nicer place! Thats one thing I could never do. I would hate to be seen as an interfering busybody. So you would be very happy for this guy to shout over you while you were being served and not say a word...... our souls you're losing your touch!

Our Souls...I would totally need to disagree with you. What Clairehdp is suggesting isn't being a "busybody" but someone sticking up for herself and the person on the counter. In most Western countries if someone queue jumps or butts in they will be politely told to wait in turn by the sales person, here that just doesn't happen for fear of being sacked etc. We need people like Clairehdp to stand up for others. Just my opinion;) And I totally need to disagree with you! :) intervening with someone's behaviour towards another person that you don't personally like .......that IMO is seen as a 'busybody' (to put it politely, I could think of a few other names lol) - yes, there are rude people all around but unless their actions is towards yourself personally, then just stay out! Why does someone want to be the self-appointed moral police and start telling people how to act. You could potentially escalate the issue! Ok, unless there is real serious harm going on of course its a slightly different issue, but especially in Dubai, what is acceptable for me may be perfectly not acceptable for someone else - why do you think (for example) that you are so perfect you need to address other's attitudes towards someone else when you are not involved? I love the breakfasts at AR golf club. The bacon is really good and their sausages are real pork. They also do scrummy banana pancakes with syrup which are delicous - they do them plain to with chocolate sauce if you hve a tricky eater!

word of caution. if you are pricing up electrical stuff remember that summer surprises started yesterday and will go on for 5 weeks (not the usual 10 because of Ramadan) so make sure that you are not writing down those discounted prices because they will be higher for sure in 5 weeks time.

Blimey I've never heard of al minhad so no flue where that is in relation to Arabian ranches. We are in the ranches and it fantastic for kids and inredubky social for the adults too. Superb community facilities covered baby pools super playgrounds and lovely bike rides around the development. Close to great shopping too and most places will deliver takeaway food. Re putting your kids in a different year to what they should be in this is not allowed by the ministry of education unless they give special permission and they would need to be geniuses! I think a couple of schools here do it but mst do not.. Remember if you are coming from Australia that the school year is different and your kids may have to repeat the year here again hopefully an Australian mum who has been through this will be able to guide you better than I can we are British and the kids go to a British school.

Oh Claire - we are doing the same thing - leaving so staying in hotel for last 4 nights. We wanted to stay at Al Qasr, but couldn't find any deals on the internet. We have now booked into the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray on the Palm for sbout AED915 I think. Has anyone had experience with this hotel - is it ok? We can cancel up till the 27th so maybe we could consider Al Qasr. Any opinions on which would be better? the deal we got was for min 5 nights - you say you only need 4 nights but you know what.....I'd book 5 - get the deal and stay in Al Qasr - you've got all those restaurants to choose from - you can nip into wild wadi if you fancy it - stroll around the souk - chill out in the Talise spa...... and..... we could all meet for the first time for cocktails and toast what an amazing time we have had in Dubai before we leave! I would do a booking and then cancel your other one. You can use the restaurants in Zabeel Saray for a night if you want to experience it but in my opinion - Al Qasr is the nicest. We are staying in the villas there. Can't wait! I thought Dubailand was the huge amusement thingy on the emirates road that has never been built You are right - it is supposed to be the huge area where all the theme parks were supposed to be but....... it also encompasses the following which are all residential areas full of expats Arabian ranches Green Community Motor City Victory Heights Al Waha Layan Motor City Al Barari The Villa Falcon city and I think that Silicon Oasis with Cedre villas is just on the edge too. They are all nice villas. With regards to schooling - there is a new Gems school opening in Silicon Oasis - maybe you could get places there although I think it's getting pretty busy. Due to open this September. Gems wellington academy I think they are calling it. Welcome - I hope you enjoy it as much as we have.

Our 10th is coming up in less than 10 days. We were planning a big family getaway with in laws and my sisters. I was going to wear my dress and do professional photographs et all. We are all so tired from work and schoo, and having visitors for 2 months that we decided to cancel the whole thing. We might go for a quite weekend getaway and call it a day. Do what you want to do not what others expect. Aaaaaah that's nice! Book into Al Qasr - get a babysitter and go and have a lovely romantic dinner. xxxxx

So jealous, Claire, my idea of heaven, but husbad doesn't believe in staying in Dubai - I tried to persuade him to go to Al Qasr for our wedding anniversary, but no :) we have to stay while we close off everything - packers will have been in , villa will be empty but we need to do the final bills etc so we're staying for 10 nights - really looking forward to it - having a big final brunch and will get to have some lovely family time and a holiday before we go! it's my favourite hotel in Dubai.

what a nightmare for you - I would get my Mum to see her Dr and get a medical certificate. To be honest - at her age she's far better off staying well away from here. Get her over in November/December when it's soooo much nicer here than in the UK. I would be sending BA an e mail - their customer services are usually pretty good and hopefully they will see that the right thing to do is to re-book your mum for a later date. Tell them her recovery from her surgery is taking longer than expected and hopefully they will help you. Hope your Mum feels better soon.

sounds to me like he's come back - maybe he's a bit lonely - people have moved on in 18 months and getting back with you is an easy option. I would say no - you've not heard from him in 18 months - he wasn't that sorry then was he........ Seriously - be strong - hold your head up high and move on - think about it - he's back and it's easy to pick up the phone for him and go back like nothing ever happened. He'll do it again - I'll put money on it.

Isn't it amazing that we have to ask, "when was that..?" Things change in seconds around here and the answers are never consistent. Makes me nuts. Claire, which avenue did your friend take? The Cancel route or the transfer route? She continued but........ the girl is STILL in the Phillippines - madness really because the rules changed during their visa process and as she really like the girl she's stuck by her - and she is supposed to be coming over soon - should have been the other day but she's still not here...... I managed to get my friend a great new girl in Dubai which is great and my friend is sticking by this girl and will get her a new family when she does eventually arrive here but........ if my friend sees this I'm sure her advice would be - move on - don't bother - listen to your DH......

Her employer cancelled her visa in Abu Dhabi, and he gave her the documents showing that her visa was cancelled and we applied for her visa here in Dubai.
