I go to the clinic behind the Shangri La - is it called Al Baada or something like that. Easy parking outside and the window for renewing is to the right as you go in through the main doors. I think you need to take a copy of your lease contract and household bills now - it's always something different to the year before!!!!

I first left the UK as a teacher on a 3 year contract for a foreign Government many years ago. I was also getting a hefty rise in salary and a 15% bonus at the end of the period. You knew the deal, you made the choice. In this case, I don't quite understand the "I never intended to do 3 years"- in that case, OP, you have had a long time to come to terms with the fact that you won't get all the financial benefits that come with a 3 year package! You DO have the choice to move on - it's just that there are conditions. Your choice is clear - leave as is allowed by forfeiting some of the benefits you would get if you did the 3 years OR do the last year. You can't have your cake and eat it! Our voice of reason - well said SM.

I worked for Vidal Sassoon for many many years and some of the team are still working in their salons. There are Vidal Sassoon salons in the City, West end and knightsbridge so very handy and you'll always get a superb cut and colour there. Sushi restaurants in London - Zuma in south Kensington or Nobu in W1.

Morning ladies, Has anyone used the lady dentist in the ranches. DH has been a few times now to get her to fix the mess she made on his 1st visit. She still has one more thing to do but he is nervous about going back again. There will be no charge on his next visit but not sure whether to try somewhere else and pay for the work. Anyone had any good or bad experiences? do a search as I commented on this the other day....

How can you *love* a house that is not your own, in fact how can you love a pile of bricks? Weird concept. Because it's your home! Well i'm not materialistic so my home is where i lay my head, love is not a word that should be used with anothers property or a pile of bricks. An area you have been happy living in and would recommend i can understand, but *love* a house.......oh boy that is just so so wrong. I can't see who is saying they love their bricks - all the comments are why they love living where they live so it's far far more than loving bricks - it's the whole area, the community, the reasons - I love living in this villa but I'm not in love with a villa - I'm in love with my life! and my point to you was that a house is a home - it's what you make it - my housemaid lives in what we would class as a garden shed back in the Philippines - it's her home and she loves it and inside it's cosy and welcoming and it's her home - it's where her family are and they love it because it's their home.. I think you're getting your loves all mixed up!

I love living in Arabian ranches. When we first came here Ar was just being handed over and it was in the middle of nowhere so for that reason we chose jumeirah islands. We loved living on the islands and only moved to be closer to the kids school. Now we are on Ar I love it far far more than Ji! Of course it's so much better now with the new road system but people still think that Ar is far from everywhere but I love the fact that you are 15 -25 minutes from most areas in Dubai!!! I love waking up to the birds singing. I love cycling. I love our book club, drinks and dip nights, cocktails and canapés night, pudding club, indian cooking classes, swimmimg lessons for the kids, Arabian nights rugby, Le Marche, golf club suppers with friends and golf club breakfasts with family. The community pools are lovely so are the play areas and the place is so green and yet 5 minutes away there is beautiful desert for dog walking and amazing photo opportunities and yet 15 minutes straight drive to the beach. Its a plae where you an have lots of impromptu dinners with neighbours. I love strolling down the road with a dish and bottle and staggering back a few hours later having had a wonderful evening with superb food, drink and great company. Ar ticks all boxes for me and I will be very very sad to leave.

What about NKD Pizza? I think they advertise healthier pizzas (wholemeal bases etc). They deliver to the ranches but haven't tried them but I think someone mentioned them on here a while ago and said they were good. they are superb! my only bug with them is they charge for delivery - come on..... deliver to AR for free please!

I always pick up my tickets a few days before. Mind you - I usually do big group bookings but I'm sure you can pick them up a few days before - just take your confirmation with you.

Why would a woman feel the 'need' to put her left leg up? :\: Can't understand why men do it either really, I always guess that perhaps their 'bits' need to be adjusted or something after sitting for a while....... This is soooo funny - so Izzy were you adjusting your bits!!!!!!????? No - was just uncomfy and was trying chilll - was tired and had just want to relax...... foot did actually go all the way to dashboard but was def in that direction.... freaked me out a bit..... I often put the seat back and put both feet up on the dashboard but.......i'm sitting in the other seat!!!!!! You've been here too long!!!!!

Are you serious - you have to pull up the garden? How ridiculous! Boomerang I don't know anyone who hasn't got their deposit back...... I'd be hugely peed off if we didn't get our deposit back. I would also be hugely peeved if I had to dig up the garden - what a crazy clause.

Most of the restaurants will still serve outside with fans/coolers. It's just whether you want to - I personally think it's very uncomfortable and would far prefer to be inside now.

I have been living in JI for many years now. I really cant fault it. Yes there are some issues regarding landscape maintenance, but the overall advantages are huge. We are minutes away from SZR on one side and the Meadows/Springs village on the other. Its quiet, exclusive and yet so central. We are minutes away from Ibn Batuta, Marina Mall and JBR. We have a great club house with a gym, tennis courts and a bar license. There are lovely parks for kids and the walk around the lakes has to be experienced to be believed. To me its the most beautiful development in Dubai. JMHO I thought exactly that Dame until we moved..........I think as we drive through the gates we put on our rose coloured spectacles in JI! I now realise how very far out JI really is. I now see and spend time in so many more places in Dubai as we are far more central to everything. I love the new clubhouse but boy did they take their time opening that!

Some agents charge a nominal fee for renewal - say 500 dhs......should say something about renewal on your contract if it doesn't - I wouldn't pay and insist on renewing with the LL direct. remember - first year renewal - no rent increase (just in case they try it on.....) <em>edited by Clairehdp on 14/06/2011</em>

My little boy does rugby at Jess AR - it's Arabian Knights - he loves it. there is also a lot of football clubs that use the Jess playing fields too. Brownies and Rainbows I think Not sure about ballet - maybe someone else can help with that but my little girl does her ballet at school.

It's by sharing these things with everyone that people know they have rights and that the government departments do try to help expats here if they can and if they feel we are being unfairly treated. I hope they sort this out for you and you end up with a good LL for the future - they do exist it's just the bad ones tar it for all.

Thanks Ladies Icedqueen - Do you have to work for a freezone company or etc to get EGate renewed there? No. You can do any of your visa related stuff there as well. They close at 5pm though. There is 1 counter for egate not always manned so you have to ask them. We've been going there for years and there are never any queue's when we go. Take your old card in case they ask for it but the last time it took less than 5 minutes for me. He just asked me if it was a renewal and printed a new one for me using the information on my passport. I always go there too they are so helpful you can park easily and it's never busy!!!!

Hi dubaidella and others :), this is how the story continued today... I went to Empower in the morning, and called the agent after I was done (as agreed yesterday, after we inspected the apartment and I gave them the keys), so that she can call the LL and we can meet. Well, OF COURSE as you already knew yesterday :D my LL didn't show up. The agent told me that the LL wants to inspect the apartment one more time and we can maybe meet later tonight... I lost it completely, and decided that this bullying will STOP HERE. I made a U-turn (as I was driving home from Empower) and drove straight to RERA. I was SUPER upset and stormed in... I had a little "chat" with the officials and they promised to sort things out for me. 15 minutes later RERA officials had called my LL and he agreed to bring my deposit check & my RERA ordered court fees (ALL OF IT, NOT ONLY 50% AS THEY SUGGESTED YESTERDAY) to RERA office tomorrow so I can collect them from there. I am feeling happy now, but as I know what an €%&#"?`&%€€ my LL is, I am not yet celebrating. Who knows what his plan will be tomorrow? So... I am getting ALL my RERA fees now for sure, but let's hope I will get the deposit as well. SO dubaidella, tomorrow I will let you know if I need you in court as my support :D! But let's keep our fingers crossed and hope I get my money tomorrow and this nightmare will end!!!!!!! fingers crossed for you. Rera will not like that he has not followed through on their ruling. I did suggest to you going there and lodging the keys with them - shame you didn't do that as you could have saved yourself yet another stressful day..... Let us know how it goes...

We moved from UK to Jumeirah Islands and were among the first people to move in there. It was absolutley lovely - very well maintained and we loved it! we even fought with rent committee case to stay. We are now on Arabian Ranches and it is far, far nicer imo to JI. On reflection I wish now that we had not fought to stay there. the villas on JI are gorgeous but it does depend on which cluster you are on. We had very little problems but I know many many people who were there who had problem after problem. I used to think that JI was so handy for everything but now we are on AR I can't believe how much closer to everything we are here. Now they have opened the new flyover in the past few weeks it's a 12/15 minute drive to Internet City - it can take the same time to get to IC from JI. If I had my time again I would choose AR over JI any day. The build quality of the villas in AR is far far superior to JI. There's no construction either as the development is finished. the roads all around are good and free flowing - I still can't believe when I go back to JI that they are still digging up all the roads into both entrances - the Ibn Battuta entrance is a nightmare and the back way out by Springs is apalling. It's a little oasis in the middle of construction ****. I think The Villa is too far for you - your husband would struggle to come back to see the kids. If I were you I would seriously look at AR, Victory Heights and the Green Community at Motor City. What curriculum are you looking at for schools - Repton and DIA are completely different curriculums - sounds to me like your relo consultant is throwing stuff at you. I would have an early morning meeting and reiterate exactly what you need. Or..... put it on here and we will point you to the right places...... I have some free time late morning if you want me to drive you around AR/Victory Heights. Happy to take you to Repton too as that's where my kids go...... Realised I haven't mentioned that we've got the golf club on AR and the polo club just outside - both great places for family brunches, fabulous breakfasts, great food and drink and a quizz night - very very social - you'll meet so many people very quickly here and so will your kids. My little boy takes golf lessons too - it's just so so much easier than being on JI. kids can do football coaching at Jess playing fields - my little boy also plays rugby for Arabian Knights and they meet on the playing fields at Jess on a Saturday - it's just a very easy place to live and the kids are safe and have so much to do on their doorstep. <em>edited by Clairehdp on 14/06/2011</em>

Baileys and chocolate cheesecake - yum! The smooth, creamy liqueur gives this celebration cheesecake the wow factor. Top with grated chocolate and a dusting of cocoa. Ingredients 100g/3½oz butter 250g/8¾oz digestive biscuits, crushed 600g/1lb 5oz Philadelphia cream cheese 25ml/1fl oz Baileys 100ml/3½oz icing sugar 300ml/10½oz double cream, whipped 100g/3½oz grated chocolate To garnish 200ml/7¼oz double cream, whipped cocoa powder, to dust Preparation method 1.Melt the butter in a pan and add the crushed digestive biscuits. Mix well until the biscuits have absorbed all the butter. 2.Remove from the heat and press into the bottom of a lined 18cm/7in springform tin. Place in the refrigerator and allow to set for one hour. 3.Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Lightly whip the cream cheese then beat in the Bailey's and icing sugar. Fold in the whipped cream and grated chocolate. When smooth, spoon evenly onto the biscuits. 4.Refrigerate and allow to set for a further two hours. Once set, remove and decorate with whipped cream and cocoa powder dusted over the top. Serve.

Fromage Frais Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce by Delia Smith This is absolutely gorgeous and easy and very light. Serves 8 Ingredients For the filling: 12 oz (350 g) fromage frais (8 per cent) 12 oz (350 g) full-fat curd cheese 3 large eggs 6 oz (175 g) caster sugar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract For the topping: 1½ lb (700 g) strawberries, hulled 2 level tablespoons caster sugar For the base: 6 oz (175 g) sweet oat biscuits 2 oz (50 g) butter, melted 2 oz (50 g) coarsely chopped toasted hazelnuts Pre-heat the oven to gas mark 2, 300°F (150°C). Equipment You will also need a 9 inch (23 cm) springform cake tin. This recipe is taken from Delia Smith's Summer Collection. Method Begin by crushing the biscuits in a food processor, or by putting them in a plastic bag and rolling them with a rolling pin, then mix them with the melted butter and stir in the hazelnuts. Now press the mixture into the base of the tin and pop it into the fridge to firm up while the filling is made. For this combine, in a large bowl, the curd cheese, fromage frais, eggs, sugar and vanilla, using an electric hand whisk to beat everything together until silky smooth. Now pour this mixture over the biscuit base and place on the centre shelf of the oven to cook for 30 minutes. At the end of the cooking time, turn off the oven, but leave the cheesecake in the cooling oven to set until it's completely cold (I find that this is the best method as it prevents cracking). Remove the cheesecake from the oven and from the tin, transfer it to a plate, cover and chill till needed. For the topping, weigh out 8 oz (225 g) of the strawberries into a bowl, sprinkle them with the caster sugar and leave to soak for 30 minutes. After that, pile these strawberries and the sugar into a food processor and purée, then pass the purée through a nylon sieve to remove the seeds. To serve the cheesecake, arrange the remaining strawberries all over the surface, then spoon some of the purée over them and hand the rest of the purée separately

the only legal way is to hire through an agency or sponsor a full time maid. there are lots of recommendations on here for part time agencies. I have used Howdra and was very happy with them.

We give ours a TV, DVD and the Pinoy package through Du. It only costs about any extra 60-70aed a month and includes a few entertainment channels, pinnoy channels, sport and news. same here

UPDATE Visited Empower and heard the same story again (can't give me the bill today). I called my LL there and then, and like a miracle, he picked up the phone. The Empower people had a chat with him and explained the situation. I will be getting my final bill tomorrow morning and then I will handover the apartment. I agree it with you fully Hello.Again.Kitty - court order should not be negotiable. 100% agree, but unfortunately there has been a lot of other issues in this whole mess that "should have not been negotiable"... But he still keeps on pushing me further and further... To mover and a sheikha - I did go to RERA. Our court case lasted 4 months. I had a waterproof case, all kind of evidence you can possibly imagine against my LL. Pictures, documents, maintenance reports, written statement (all translated into Arabic). The judges didn't even look at my evidence, and in every single hearing there was a new judge and new people. RERA did send an inspector to my home that told me after the inspection that I shouldn't worry, I will win the case, they know my LL and that he is a trouble maker. All will be OK, and my misery will end! .... And I went back to court smiling, to receive this final judgement... There was again a new judge, who had never even heard of this statement that was given to me by RERA inspector. The case dragged and dragged, and my LL was given a chance after chance to fix what he was supposed to do before I even moved in to my apartment. During this time I had to listen to verbal abuse & threats and in every single court hearing my LL would drag his whole family to the hearing - all of them claiming that I am a liar. Me vs. 15 people (who I never had met and they knew nothing about me or my problems, but they were still allowed to participate and abuse me in front of the judge). My LL knows exactly what he has done. I am not the first or the last tenant he has done this to. He knows I'm right, but he also knows there is nothing I can do. So going to RERA will not solve a tenant's problem. Sometimes they do help, but in my case, I only ended up spending 10K of my own money, spent endless hours gathering evidence and having everything translated, suffered verbal abuse and humiliation etc etc. Would I go to RERA again? No. And my LL knows this, and that's why he is "offering" to pay only 50% of what court ordered him to pay. He knows how much trouble it will be for me to file a case against him again. And I know he will drag his whole family to the court hearing again, and somehow at the end of the day I will still have to pay and this whole case will turn against me. This is how things work in Dubai. Sad but true, but what can I do? I have made the decision to live here. As much as my Scandinavian heart is exploding because of this abuse and injustice, and I would definitely like to show this man how I really feel about him and his family, I have no other choice but to back off. So all you people, who end up in trouble with your LLs, unless you are just wanting to get your deposit back, I wouldn't file a case in RERA. sounds like you've had a really crappy time - poor you. You would not have to file another case against him - he's had a ruling and he's not following it. Rera will get on to him to pay......If it was me I'd lodge the keys at Rera so he collects from there after paying the money he's been ordered by the court to pay you. He must not be allowed to get away with this apalling behaviour. I'm so sorry you've been treated this way. we had a very good experience with the rent committee and everyone I know who have been there and filed a case have been treated very well.

ive searched and searched but nobody has an indoor pool open to the public, of course if you want to become a member of various spas and resorts you can use the pool... also googled the Hamdan sports complex on the 611 but cant find a "contact us" number or email...? Looks like swimming is on hold until the winter months :-( What a waste of an amazing facility. Maybe try calling Dubai Municipality and see if they can give you a contact number for the sports complex. How about seeing if one of the schools would open up their indoor pool for a swim session maybe once a week or something. If you get a gruop together it might work pretty well.

Ohh thanks ladies very interesting, Id be a very happy lady indeed for 100k or more even :) Some places do seem to be priced highly if you ask me. I'm looking in Surrey Farnham,Liphook,Frensham ect areas. I am watching them and have been for a few months, worth a visist when I'm back and maybe will make a silly offer :) Ooooooh that's exactly where we are!!!!!!! Unless the rules have changed, eye tests for children (up to 14?) have to be done in a hospital not an opticians. Well that explains why my friends all seem to go to Moorfields! thanks I didn't know that.

If he has a renewable contract then he can renew. Has he sent something in writing and can he prove that? I would pop down to the rent committee and ask them for their advice. go in person with his tenancy contract. I think you can lodge your rent cheque with the rent committee - so when he re-surfaces he cal tell the LL that his signed renewed contract is with the rent comm together with his rent cheque.

If he owes you money from the RERA case I would absolutely be up at RERA with my keys and copies of the pictures etc and e mails you have sent. Leave them with RERA who will inform him to come to the office to collect the keys and bring your deposit cheque. I bet one call from RERA and he'll come out from his hidey hole....... Dont let him bully you - the Rera guys are really good and fair and if they've ruled against him once they won't like that he's messing you about again...... good luck and please let us know how you get on.....

Hi all my 7 year old has to get his eyes tested any ideas where to go to get this done... Does arabian ranches clinic do this? Also does arabian ranches clinic have a dentist? TIA don't know about eye tests but be warned about the dentist in AR clinic..... I took my little girl there to have a very wobbly baby tooth pulled as it was causing her some pain - we were there for max 5 minutes - no big deal the dentist pulled the tooth in seconds and we left but.....when I came to pay they charged 500 dhs plus over 200 dhs for the tooth pull!!!!! I nearly passed out and then they told me that all new patients have to pay a 500dhs joining/first assessment fee.......nothing was mentioned when I booked the appointment - I would have pulled it myself if I'd known! Friends of mine take their kids to the moorfields eye hospital in healthcare city for their eye tests - they are supposed to be amazing......if you have been told to have your childs eyes tested I think I would go that route rather than a regular optician in a shopping centre - no bad experience or anything it's just those I know with kids who need glasses rave about the team at Moorfields. <em>edited by Clairehdp on 12/06/2011</em>

I thought actually - you're right.......sometimes we get so bogged down on the problem and look for all different solutions that we forget they are just kids......and sometimes just a day out doing something to take everyone's minds off what is kicking off and a snuggle and cuddle on the sofa is all that's needed to get some calm back in all our lives. It's sometimes in those quiet moments that things are said that make everything more clearer. It's when I get the most out of my little boy. Sometimes we are looking at so many complicated ways to handle a situation that the easy solution gets forgotten. I read her post a couple of times and that's my interpretation of it......

For coffee - Raw in the Dubai Garden Centre - it's won awards and the guys really know their beans! For coffee and cake - Circle in Beach Park Plaza on beach road. Their carrot cake knocks the Lime Tree off top spot in my opinion. It's served with a warm topping......amazing. they also do the most wonderful bagels. It's a beautiful cafe - one of my favourites.

We are buying and selling at the moment. On our house we have accepted an offer 5k less than the asking price and on one of the houses we are interested in we offered 250k less than the asking price and it was accepted!!!!! On another we offered 100k less and it;'s been rejected - we have offered more and are waiting to hear........ If you are going for new build find out when their financial year is - if you are offering and can complete by their year end get stuff thrown in - free carpets, free white goods etc etc. We were advised by the agents to make a silly off - so we did!!!!! Your agent should be able to guide you - they will know what the local area prices are - go onto rightmove.co.uk and check out other houses in the area. there's also a site (can't remember the name) where you can go on and look to see what houses in the area sold for. You can even search on the post code and road and you'll get a really good feel for what houses are selling for now and what they sold for over the last 5 years or so..... good luck!

Thanks Claire. Think I'll book it. We had a sneak look inside it today as we went to the Noodle House, it looks fab. I had the roasted chicken with foie gras stuffing which was amazing and then the frozen scandinavian berries with a hot white chocolate sauce - it was sublime and as good - if not better than when I had it in London last month! Have you been to the Aquarium at the Dubai Creek Yacht and Golf Club KWSV? Anyone been to The Ivy yet? What do you think? Thinking of taking DH there for his birthday. Oooh yes - went to a pre-opening - superb service and the food was divine. Lots of dishes the same as the London Ivy. Definitely book it!
