289 1114 I am pretty sure that is the #. Can I suggest strongly Clair, that you physically go down there? she must be close by. Have you looked in the smallest places in your neighbourhood? electrical buidings...hiding in neighbours water tank enclosures, garages in cupboards, neighbours who have gone away? posters in all doors and continually knocking on door who do not answer, insisting to please let you check their yard for hidden spots?? or have her hidden somewhere? see if you can get on the radio? call all vets with pictures...at midnight go on your roof and call her and listen. I do hope she calls back :( thanks SueB. I hear what you are saying and will get down there today. I've been that mad woman during the night on the balcony and all around the garden and outside hoping that she'd call me but nothing so far.....

Thinking of you, Claire. Hope she turns up today. How agile is she at that age? Perhaps as someone said, she's found her way into a garden or something and can't seem to get out. Thanks. A sleepiness night for me. Was up and down looking for her hoping she was on the front door step but no sign yet...... She doesn't look an old cat she's in great condition and even the vet commented that she was looking great last time she was there for her shots. There's no way that she would be able to climb the garden wall though but she could get in under the garden gates I think so I'm just hoping that she can get out the same way and find her way back to us. Will be out again after school drop off for day 2 of where are you Millie.

Right ladies - one last call around the garden and out the front and I'm off...... thank you so much for all your good wishes - fingers crossed she'll saunter back with no care in the world as only cats can do! If you are on AR please please keep your eyes peeled for a gorgeous colour point cream and blue british short haired cat with a bright pink colour who should answer to Millie. xx

Sounds as if she got out somehow, i would go now while it is quite for another walk about calling her. Only got back in half an hour ago from being out again with my biscuit shaker and calling her. thought as it's so quiet that it might help but no response to my calls. Feeling really sad as she's my very special cat and a big big part of our family. My little girl doesn't know what life without a cat is - she's really missed her today...... will be out again early tomorrow and hope we can get her back.

Any garages around, she may locked in, hope she turns up soon. Most of the garages here are open ones. Still got some leaflets to give out so hope that those who have garages that are closed will check on them for me tomorrow. I had a cat once who we lost for over 10 days - he got locked in a shed but he came back skin and bone and had lost his meiow - but a bit of tlc and lots of food and he was fine although he never meiowed again!

Who has access to the house and could have left a door/window open? How, when will help give you a time frame. It would be unusual for a house cat to stray too far are you sure no one could have taken her? The thing is - pre-Dubai she was an outdoor cat but when we brought her here it was the summer and she hated the heat - she burnt her paw pads on the marble steps so it put her off going out so she was never ever bothered about going out. the only thing we can think of is that we had a food delivery last night - she was with us right up until the door bell went. None of us can remember seeing her after that. My DH says he did not notice her going out. I've called the restaurant and they have checked with their delivery driver and he didn't notice a cat leaving the villa but.......that's the only time that we know that the door was opened. Usually she never ever worries about the door being open and saunters past without a thought to go out (although we are always careful and if we open the doors we always keep the fly screen across in case she did try to get out). I'm now wondering if the storm yesterday spooked her and made her act strangely and out of character....... just wish I knew where she was and that she is OK......13 years is a long time and she always slept with me - am not looking forward to going to bed without her purring in my ear!

From time to time, Dubai Municipality does a round up of cats. It is not pretty and no one knows where they will be next. If you have a cat that goes out make sure it has a collar and municipality tag on. If you have lost the tag, get another one. Also a good idea to keep you cats in from dinner time on as they usually put out the traps at night when cats roam. Something to chew on. Sue B - do you have a number for the cat people at Dubai Municipality - my gorgeous 13 year old cat has gone missing. she has name tag with phone number on, municipality tag and she's micro chipped but......nothing so far and I've pounded the streets looking for her. Will get on the phone to them tomorrow and see if I can get down there to see if they have her......

My cat went missing (long story, he was taken by our former driver). FF and vets told me to immediately walk the area/perimeter around your house and compound, take a few worn shirts (unwashed with your scent and leave one in front of your house/garden and also rub it along walls/ garden, places close by...anywhere where she can catch your scent. Keep calling her name and do repeat every few hours/days. Your little one will be disoriented and in need of a homing beacon. Do it now. Do not let days go by, best chance for her to come back is when the trail is fresh. Put out food around your home and some water out. Give pictures to all cat/vet clinics in Dubai in case she gets brought in and write to 7days with a picture. Really feel for you. I hope you find her. Good luck!! Thanks so much. I called our vets and they tell me that as soon as an animal is brought in they call all the other vets to see if they have been reported as missing. If she still has her collar on she has my number and also her municipality tag........so I hope that she still has her collar on - she's also microchipped. Will be calling municipality tomorrow.

I've been outside twice and had a look around. Nothing, sorry. Do you need any help tomorrow? I'll be home from work at 4 and can walk round then? Talk to the maids as well - if there is a reward they will be very vigilant and keep their eyes open... thanks so much - I've just got back in after walking around with the iams shaking them and calling her name. Saw quite a few people walking around and have given out more leaflets. Have dropped pictures in most of our road and will hit the rest and street 1 tomorrow. Lifeguard at the pool has a picture for the noticeboard and the guards at the entrance have pictures and contact details. Met some maids whilst out too and have passed them the leaflet....... Had a call just now from a lovely lady in Victory Heights who thought it might be Millie - sent her a photo and it's not - so another pussycat is missing in Victory Heights...... Thanks so much for being so vigilant.......fingers crossed she will find us and be OK. Seems so strange without her here with me this evening.

Isn't it their age - I have a 7 year old and he's always coming up to tell me about what someone said or did - I just tell him I'm not interested - but I'm not a teacher and I suppose you can't say that in case it's a bullying problem....... When we are in a group I've noticed that most of the kids in that age group and backwards and forwards with he said and she said and he did and she did....... I thought it was just a growning up phase..... Are you not able to tell the constant tell talers from the ocassional ones. I don't envy you and this is one of the reasons why I never trained to be a teacher! I hope others can give you some good advice - I'm just relieved there are people like you who train to teach our kids and save us all from hearing all the telling of tales!!!!!

What is there to be concerned about moving to a lovely place with lots of nice people - sounds like a very good plan to me! my concern is, i'll want to live there but then have to choose an extra 2 hours of dh vs a great neighborhood. (I don't think he'd be pleased to know I'm willing to sacrifice our time together.) Is he planning to commute to AD? AR is not a bad location for commuting to AD - you can go out the back road which is a good clear road rather than do the Emirates Road bash down to SZR - it most certainly won't add in 2 extra hours - maybe you're baseing that on when the old roundabout was there - I too would never go to AR then but that was a couple of years ago - now it's plain sailing. If you want a villa and your dh is commuting to AD I would go for Jum Islands Meadows/Springs The Lakes Green Community Green Community Motor City AR Victory Heights

GGP, sorry, no, apart from going past them nearly every day, but I've never been inside JI. As you'll have gathered, I'm a fan of the Meadows, but I don't think you're going to get your dream bathroom there! I believe our landlord owns quite a few houses in Meadows 9 and possibly other Meadows, if you want, I'll try and find his details and get back to you. my husband is a big fan of the meadows. do you think if i wanted one of those meadows places i could re do the bathroom to my own specs? and maybe re do the kitchen? we plan on being in dubai for a good long while. (till we can afford to buy a nice house in London) when we first came here my husband too was a huge fan of the meadows until we started viewing other places - some of the meadows villas we viewed were in a shocking state. The problem here is that you are only really safe in your rental property for a year - you can fight with the rent committee and stay for a maximum of 3 years but it's stressful and it absolutely depends on your landlord. The problem now is that no one is really safe here regarding job security and even the landlords have found themselves needing to sell/move back in etc. There is no way on this earth that I would spend one dirham on remodelling someone elses house without getting a longer term lease. At least that way you know that if you spend a large amount of money on the property then you will be able to stay. the only issue with that is that if prices drop further you could find in a year to twos time that you are paying high rent while the other poperties rent has come down...... I'd find the best you can for what you want and enjoiy it for what it's worth knowing that the money that you make and save here will be spent on a property no one can take back from you and you have your drearm house wherever that may be when you leave here. anything you do in a property must be with the written approval of the landlord.

thanks.. how much would a taxi cost from Dubai Marina to Dragon mart? It's probably almost equivalent to an airport run from dubai marina - it's not as far as airport but out a little on the Hatta road. The metro doesn't go out there - not really sure whether getting to a metro station would help much. I suppose you could go from mall of the emirates but I don't think it would save you much money by the time you all pay to go on the metro....

There are some clusters on JI that are not great but we lived on a good cluster (and there are many of those!) we were not right on the water either so were not bothered by some of the mozzie and smelly stagnant water issues either. It was lovely when we lived there - I visited back a few weeks ago and it was looking a bit tired. I can't believe that the roads around springs and meadows and JI are still 2 years down the line still such a mess...... Emirates Rd I think is a safer road than SZR - I now hardly ever have to drive on SZR and feel far safer on Emirates Road and Al Khail Road. It also helps that the huge amount of construction lorries are so much less these days so the roads are not bunged up with cement mixing lorries. We are not on Arabian Ranches and I far far prefer to JI - but that's my personal feeling. GGP you will have to come over and spend time driving around and getting a feel for where you like and take a look at lots of villas - you will know when you have found where you want to be. Happy hunting.

GGP sounds to me like you need to look at Jumeirah Islands - 4 and 5 bed villas in new dubai area - just off sheik Zayed road, across from the marina and close to both Ibn Battuta and Mall of the Emirates. They have walk in showers and large bath tubs. Some layouts have just showers in the en suites and others have full bath tubs. All have private pool.

Is there anything else we should see or do on the Palm? TIA I;m pretty sure there are vouchers in the entertainer for this. I wouldn't pay to go back in there - it's nice but there's a limit to how many aquariums you can see!

There are lots of summer school programmes but they are usually more activity focussed - not sure I've even heard of one where the kids do school work. I would sign them up to have fun at one of the summer camps and perhaps do some work with them at home yourself to help them catch up. There are loads of resources on the internet now that are useful. I'm sure if you speak to the school they are going to join that they would be able to point you in the right direction of work, websites and books to cover with them. If I were you I would probably concentrate on them making new friends, getting swimming lessons and just focussing on a small amount of work on some fun sites during the summer break. After all - they are only young and need to have fun!

You need to transfer her sponsorship onto yours - the previous sponsor will need to sign a NOC letter and go to immigration with you to transfer all the documents over. Otherwise, if caught - you could get a 100k dhs fine and your housemaid will be deported. Also, are you sure they are married - have you seen their marriage certificate. If they are not married then again this is illegal. If you do not sponsor this housemaid yourself she is working for you illegally. She will know that and so will the lady holding her passport.......

We have lost 2 very special grandads recently so my 2 have had to face the shock and upset of this early on. One grandad was ill and we went over and visited and spent time in the hospice and the children knew that he was very sick and he would be leaving to go to heaven. The other Grandpa (my Dad) passed away unexpectedly so the shock for us all was enormous. I explained to the kids that he had gone to join Grandad up in heaven. My little girl (5) was very pragmatic and asked if he'd be with her dead hamsters and the dead cat George...... my little boy (6) needed some quiet time to take it in but then came down and asked if there was a pub in heaven that Grandpa Ted could go to!!!!!! We told them on both occasions that there is a new star in the sky and both say goodnight to their Grandad and Grandpa Teds star every night. We have had the 'are you going to die too?' questions but I always just say 'oh goodness me not yet - we've got tons of stuff to do together' and just carry on with whatever we are doing at the time - it is usually in the car on a journey! I have found that the first pet death (George the cat) was the one that prompted so many questions but - at the same time - showed me how very pragmatic kids can be - when I sat them down to tell them that George had been killed on the road my little girl wanted to know was that the boy one or the girl one - when I said the boy one she stood up - looked at her brother and said - yay - the girls won!!!!!!!! My little boy was sad and wanted to know exactly how it happened and what would happen and where would he go etc etc and when he had it straight in his head he wanted to know why - on that day - did George just not run a bit faster....!!!!!! I think you handled your questions from your 4 year old perfectly well - just go with the flow - I think they just need reassuring that you are there for them......

SunDevil - pets cannot be sedated during flights but an alternative is to buy a "calming collar". They cost about $15 and have active ingredients for 30 days that release pheromones and relax the pet. If you put the calming collar on your dog a week or so before travel, it should to some degree calm her on the flight. I don't think they are allowed to wear collars though either in case it gets caught on the crate - I'm almost certain that we had to remove our cats collar for this reason.

Okay, I'll tell you from my experience. My mother was a doctor for the military (we're from Texas). I got married and moved to London--- then I had to start using their medical facilities. YUCK! YUCK! YUCK! The NHS hospitals (and even the private hospitals) are a horror. I had to have my son privately here in London after the NHS lost my records around 7 times during my pregnancy. During the pregnancy, I started bleeding (at 16 weeks) and they told me I had miscarried. I demanded an ultra sound and on the screen was my happy little bubbly baby--heart still beating. They never figured out why I was bleeding and even sent me home (still bleeding). I ended up delivering at 37 weeks (c-section) AND I had pre-eclampsia! Waiting that long and not figuring out I had such a serious condition was past irresponsible. It was absolutely third world. If I hadn't demanded a c-section the morning I did no one would have realized I had pre-eclampsia. London is not a great place for medicine. Not even Harley Street is that great. The medical practices are out of date. If my mother hadn't been a doctor I wouldn't know to go and call up her friends and ask them for advice regarding the next steps. My son is currently speech delayed, I've combined his treatment with Private and NHS help and let me tell you, I've got the best in the country and I've still had to quit work to help my son because the medical services here are out of date and overstretched. Having said all of this, I do have another American friend here who is undergoing cancer treatment here, but I think it's more out of necessity because she may not have insurance in America anymore (Her husband works here for one of these banks)...So perhaps their UK Insurance is paying for a private room at an NHS hospital. Also, the hospitals themselves are generally are a huge mess. Blagh. I think you will probably be eating your words once you move to Dubai. The NHS in the UK is FAR superior to ANY medical facility in the UAE. Did you know that most Arabs go to the UK/US or Europe for medical treatment? How can you give the OP advice when you have never lived in the UAE? I never compared the UK NHS to any medical care in the middle east. I was comparing everything to America. (re-read). I have no clue on how i'm going to deal with life in the UAE but I know how awful it's been here in London. Not sure how you can compare everything to America though as I thought you had to pay or have insurance for every little procedure done in the US - I worked for a US company and the health package costs for our US employees was mind blowing. Probably a case of you pays your money - you takes your choice. At least the NHS is free.

I think at 12 I would check out the books and i've read the girl with the dragon tatoo and I don't think it's suitable for a 12 year old. Out of interest - did your sister read it?

I think if I had anything very serious I would most definitely go to the UK for a 2nd opinion - you wait until you get here - there are not loads and loads of great drs and hospitals here - only a few who seem to be getting it right. My sister has gone through years of treatment with 2 of her closest friends and they have had amazing treatment and care. My Dad was treated like a king in 2 NHS hospitals last year and was treated and cured of a highly rare condition. I had a similar experience to you with my first little boy threatened miscarriage but I was admitted and scanned and assured everything was fine. they decided to put me on a high risk pregnancy programme and I was checked regularly and towards the end of my pregnancy I had to attend a special unit to have a trace - I was beautifully looked after and was happy to do whatever they recommended I did - I felt absolutely fit and well but at 37 weeks a blood test showed up something that pointed to pre-eclampsia with no outward warning signs (ie I had no headaches, no blurred vision, no swelling etc etc) so I was admitted and my little boy was delivered the next morning - all nhs and absolutely no complaints whatsoever - I could not fault my care from my dr surgery, antenatal care with my midwife, my hospital care, delivery and after care with the midwives and health visitor. I went on to have another baby the following year and had the same amazing care so it wasn't a one off experience. I think with everything - there are good apples and bad apples but it's sad to tar the NHS with the bad brush. We are very lucky to have such a service and others are lucky to be able to benefit too. A friend here had her cancer treatment at the American Hospital and she was very happy with her care - she's a picture of health now. The Royal Marsden Hospital in London is one of the best cancer hospitals in the UK - if not the best - it might be worth contacting them Natalie and talking to them. Many people travel from all over the world to see their specialists. Natalie8 - I hope the info on here helps you with your difficult decision. I also know, from friends who have had cancer that having confidence in your doctors and those who are treating you helps enormously. Good luck to you and I hope you continue to do well in your recovery.
