[b'>Sun devil your vet clearly has not dealt with the shipping of an animal. The air carriers will not accept sedated pets so please make sure you do not sedate them. [/b'> We brought our elderly cat over and she was fine and did not soil herself. She was calm and well cared for. Hopefully others from the us can let you know who they used. We used a company in the Uk called air pets and we used Dubai doghouse to clear her through at the Dubai end which saves time. Alison at the doghouse was superb -maybe call her and she can allay your fears. There are many many dogs here who have come over with their families and I've not heard of any horror stories. I would check that your vet is fully up to date with the vaccination requirements for coming over to live here - again the Dubai doghouse can help you with that if you need to double check that your vet is fully up to speed on the requirements. But please don't sedate. Your dog will be wagging his tail in the sand before you know it! Good luck on coming over here - exciting times are ahead for you. Claire if you go back and read my latest post I said my vet does NOT recommend sedating a dog for travel. And we live in a military town and my vet has shipped military animals and military family animals all over the world. She has all of her shots and her certificate of health. She is cleared to travel, I'm just worried but looking for calming words of people who have done this with their family pet. I'm sorry it's early here I must have misread! I hope the rest of my info has helped to calm you!

If she has 3 jobs then that's illegal so you're probably best to see her go..... there are lovely maids around it's just finding one that fits with you and your family. We usually only hear about the awful ones but to be perfectly honest - most of the people I know here have good, reliable, trustworthy maids and most have been with them for a number of years too. So, take a deep breath and start interviewing and remember - if they are greedy don't continue with the interview. You will find a gem but you just have to keep on going until you know you've found her. good luck!

If this is the same person who you are trying to sell their car for them and find new employers for their maid - she owes it to you to listen to your advice. If she has a family - what on earth is she thinking about - if they have done a runner then they should never think about coming back into Dubai nor transitting through - as soon as their details are entered into the system they will be flagged....... I would get the personal items for her and fedex them to her if they are so important. What a good friend you are.

Here are some good shepherds pie recipes. The one I make is similar to the first easy one but I add garlic, tabasco, worcestershire sauce, an oxo cube, mushrooms and a chilli paper and a large glug of red wine to enrich the gravy! there are some good alternative ideas too like parsnip mash on the top or sweet potatoe mash.... http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/search.do?keywords=shepherds+pie&filterItem=&filterItem=&filterItem=&filterItem=&filterItem=&filterItem=&filterItem=&filterItem=&filterItem=&filterItem=

@dikane Is it OK to talk about licensed restaurants opening up close to you and saying "inshallah" about it...I thought the usage was like "God willing" and kinda reserved for more, um, worthy things (like the health of someone). And since Muslims can't drink...what's so "inshallah" worthy about a licensed restaurant opening? Sorry for the diversion...and don't mean to be snarky, but really wondering what the usage of inshallah is for? inshallah is used here for absolutely everything - they give you an estimated delivery date and it's followed by inshallah. They announce an opening date and it's always followed by inshallah. Yes it's god willing but I think it's also used as keep your fingers crossed!.....

Shop and ship have a shipment cost calculator so you can get a good idea of what the shipping costs will be before ordering. If it's very heavy then yes - it will cost quite a bit on shop and ship but if not it's usually cheaper and far quicker on s and s.

We book direct with the hotel as we usually book our flights with air miles. Often calling the hotel gives you the best rates but if you need a package to include flights and transfers a travel company/agency will usually come in best.

Same thoughts as Claire, went to a party there last week. Kids had a great time, but have to say the ease in which the kids can walk down the corridor and straight onto the street was fairly stressful. They do have somebody on the door, but if she is dealing with somebody coming in or on the phone I suspect it would be very easy to just walk out unnoticed. We too had lots of kids coming off requiring ice pack and lots of friction burns from the slides I guess, so long sleeves and trousers... Just out of interest - did they have proper ice packs if it was last week or was it ice cubes in a carrier bag still?

The police have been informed. This has been going on for too long. The police said she hadn't stolen them, therefore we can't get a report to give to the embassy to cancel passports. Catch 22! We're tearing our hair out. That's why I was wondering what people's opinion on the 'stolen' situation was. HereWeGo - she works for herself. So if the police have spoken to her where on earth does she say they are? I'd get onto the police again. What would happen if there was an emergency and you needed to fly to your home country - you wouldn't be able to .....nightmare

It sounds more like incompetency however ...... If you can't get them back I would send her a note informing her that if you don't receive them back by midday tomorrow that you will have no option but to go to the police. Get them back and do the process yourself it's easy I do all our visa stuff and at least you have your passports yourself. I hope she is just incompetent and not a villian. Let us know how you get on. edited by Clairehdp on 25/01/2011

We went a few weeks ago and the kids had loads of fun. I did not like the fact that you could walk right in off the street and straight into the play area. At one point we were sitting havIng coffee and I noticed one of the kids in our group heading towards the door. For safety there really should be a lockable gate to stop the kids being able to reach the door to the road! One of our group tripped and came running over with blood pouring from his mouth I was totally underwhelmed at the lack of any help from anyone who worked there. We had to ask for some ice and we were left to deal with it. Surely there should be a medically trained person there as there are bound to be accidents. I asked if they had any gel packs and were told they were waiting for some. I told them that they really needed to go out to the local pharmacy that day and get some gel packs - I wonder if they have any yet? ........ The little boy had bitten into his lip when he tripped and was fine but it bled for a while and it made me a little nervous to see how totally unprepared they were for when something went wrong. Hopefully teething problems which have been sorted now.

Hi all. Well been in Dubai now for nearly 6months. All was well but now feeling very homesick, hubby works away 5 days a week. Children at school. Just feel could of stayed in home country seen as only see hubby at weekends. Have made friends for coffee mornings but still not the same. Need to work to get me out meeting people but has to fit in with children as i drop/collect them from school. Just feeling lonely, weepy. Gave up a lot to come here to be family again but begining to feel its all a mistake. Please tell me that you can make good friends here and that it gets better.:( Sounds like you really do need to do some nice things for yourself. book yourself in for a relaxing massage and a pampering session at the Polo Club. The Ladies Ranches group is close to Motor city and they organise lots of interesting things to do (so I hear - I've not been). there's a wonderful lady on Arabian ranches, Abda who does indian cooking and you will meet some lovely people there and learn a new skill - they say the way to a mans heart is through his stomach!!!!!! Do you read? It would be good to join a book club - that gets you out at least once a month just for you and no one else to talk to others and enjoy a few glasses of wine! How about you and your husband try the quizz night at the golf club on Arabian Ranches - might be nice to do something together. If you like comedy why not book a couple of seats at the next Laughter Factory and go out together and laugh your socks off. I hope things start to feel better for you but its really important to put yourself first for a few weeks and get yourself feeling happier and relaxed and I'm sure things will start to click into place - sounds to me like you really really need some ME time.

Jumeirah Jane:[/b'> Are your kids at Repton? If so, are you happy with it? I noted Clairhp has her children there in approximately the same grades as mine would be and is happy with it. I think I am going to cross Jumeirah IB and GEMs WA off our list. I have been thinking about the fees - 20,000D higher per child than a lot of the other schools. We could do a lot with that extra money - there might be more educational value in using it to take the children travelling to some other countries during school breaks for example. You wonder what the value proposition is for that much extra, you know? Is it all just about Brand??? So... on to investigating the British Curriculum schools further edited by Buy me a Pony on 22/01/2011 Yes i would stay well clear of those two IB schools. ClaireHDP uses her own name on a public forum and is well known, not so sure she could say anything else, it is becoming quite repetative. I think Greenfields would be a good choice. I've always used my own name - why wouldn't I? I'm not sure that I'm well known!!!! Don't know many EWs in real life..... and sorry if it's becoming repetative but...... my kids are really happy at school and they seem to be doing well - we have had great teachers so yes.....I am happy. Just saying re the name thing that you are selective what you post, ie you never posted about your rant a while back about your first formal complaint re not having an IT teacher did you? "Seem" to be doing well, that's quite ambiguous? There are some great teachers i would agree with that, lets hope they stay. Seem to be doing well - yes as far as I can see they are - and I do compare with what their friends are doing in the UK and I'm happy - as far as the IT teacher was concerned it was a one off lesson but I was annoyed that we weren't told - first time for a moan - not bad and not something I felt was soooooo awful that it needed to be put out there. I would like the school to finish their building works and I've said this on here but.....as far as my kids going to a school they like and doing well with great teachers I am happy that I made the right decision for my kids...... plenty of other schools to look at if you're not happy.

Our school starts the new term the middle of April so a may start date is missing the start of he term you might find it easier to place them in at the term start date. I can't believe the khda would agree to children being off if there are places at school that they could go to as new to Dubai students. We lived in a Nakheel property and did the snagging ourselves. We were not given an hours time limit - that's just crazy. There are snags that only come up once you are in the property and using it. We completed the moving in snags and marked clearly that this was not complete and we submitted further snags as an when they appeared. For example when the rains started and the water poured in through the roof they sent a team in to rectify what was a major fault in most of the roofs but was not evident until we had a big dump of water. This was in the good days so perhaps they are offering minimal snagging now times are hard but it doesn't seem right to me. If people have already moved in perhaps they can give you a heads up of what to look out for.

Just had the family here over xmas and were told by our insurer that they were covered to drive our car. they had International licences NOT UAE licences. We also checked with RTA Nikki is right - the insurance company basically say as long as they have your approval they can drive - the RTA are very flakey about the whole thing - it's the Police who deal with all offences and if an accident occurs that's when you could find yourself in big trouble...... Why can't they just have a rule so that everyone knows exactly what is right and what is wrong.....

Jebel Ali Resort is really nice - a real get away from it all feel about it - lovely beach, lots of garden and 3 nice pools. It's cheaper during the week. I agree that the Sheraton is one of the cheaper deals - so too is the Hilton Jumeirah. worth just calling them and asking for their rates. They often do a rate which includes lunch too which sometimes works out as a good deal.
