What do you need to report? If it was devouring a much loved pet I would understand but a wild bird killing another wild bird is surely just nature..... Or do you think the falcon is a pet and is lost?

I love my homemade valentine cards and hope that this year I get 2 more. there's nothing nicer than the kids making a special valentines card in their art session. I agree with SQ - it's all about expressing love for your family/friends - doesn't need to go into detail about love between 2 sexes......

we stayed a while ago at the hilton fujairah - we booked for 4 nights but checked out after 1. Kids facilities were awful - the beach is not very nice - the best bit about the hotel was we got a lovely room and the staff were superb but it was not for us..... we drove down the coast and booked into the Le Meridien Al Aqah and we go there as often as we can - it's great for the kids - we get a babysitter from the hotel and always have one night on our own in one of their restaurants and end up sitting in the beach bar for after dinner drinks. It's fab - especially for your age group. Have heard good things about the other al Aqah hotels but we always return to Le Meridien. Entertainer book also has vouchers for their restaurants so that helps too!

Most dvd players can be made into multi region. Google multi region codes and then put in the make and model and you will be given a code. You enter the code via the remote control and that makes it multi region - that's presumably what the guy did in the back room for marycatherine.

Are you moving here with your husband's job or are you hoping to get a job here and that be the reason for the move - I only ask as you will probably find it easier to be employed if you are on your husbands sponsorship - that way you become a local hire and it's much cheaper for the company. I would contact the Dubai Community Health Centre - http://www.dubaicommunityhealthcentre.org/ <em>edited by Clairehdp on 20/01/2011</em>

DH is heading to Dubai in the next few days to meet, greet and have an orientation visit. He will be there over the weekend so will have the chance to get out of office attire and look around. We are pretty casual folk during our down-time, but are aware of the cultural requirements and want to make sure we respect those. What do non-Emirati men get around in over there on the weekends in shopping malls etc? Do they wear long pants, enclosed shoes, long sleeved shirts? or Can you get away with long shorts, collared shirts and casual shoes? Any help would be much appreciated. Long shorts, t shirts, polo shirts, flip flops, crocs, havianas etc are all acceptable clothing. If he is meeting work people for dinner then longer trousers and casual shirt would be in order depending on where they are going but if he's meeting at a bar like barest which is on the beach then shorts and tanker are absolutely fine. It's very casual here really but very short shorts and vest type tops are not acceptable unless in the gym, on the beach or running the marathon! <em>edited by Clairehdp on 20/01/2011</em>

We were just at the Meridian Al Aqah a few weekends ago and were not particulary impressed by it. It seemed to be mostly full of guests who going by their wrist bands were on some sort of AI holiday package. We felt it had the feel of a 3 star hotel in Benidorm, despite being anything but cheap. ooooh never seen that before - perhaps they had sold out to a big group.....

Hi ladies. How much would you spend on a party favour bag (goody bag) for a child's birthday party? A three year old party and a one year old party? Would you spend 30 dhs? Thanks for your help. For that age group I would buy them all a lovely bucket and spade set - Geant and Carrefour always have really good sets that are super cheap.

I think they should pay - if they are getting you as a local hire then they are getting a good deal anyway...... did they think you were on your husbands residency - if they did then perhaps that's going to be a problem for them which is why they are saying you have to apply. can you not stay on your DH residency and work with a noc from your DH?

You are being more than generous, Average wage for a Filipino is 1500 with a flight home every one or two years but thats up to you. If she thinks she can find better than I suggest you let her go and find someone as I'm not sure many families would allow boyfriends to stay over. I certainly don't. If your helper gets pregnant and it has and does happen and I speak from experience and they are not married well you know the rest. It;'s not up to you about the flights now - they are entitled to a fligth home every year according to the domestic workers contract that you and your housemaid will sign at immigration.

I am contingency planning and hoping for help. Having spoken to my preferred IB school (Greenfields) and reviewed the application requirements for it & a couple of others, I am realising it is going to be at least 2 or 3 weeks before I have the paperwork together required to present an application. My kids don't even have passports yet! Then I have to budget time to actually get the packages to Dubai... I am worried that my boys are not going to get places for Sept '11 let alone the May '11 term (which apparently is at the mercy of the Dept of Blah Blah Blah). Next step is to review some of the British Curriculum schools. Which schools would you recommend with a British Curriculum? Ideally co-educational (as we are a family of men and I want my boys to be able to communicate respectfully with girls), but will look at either. Thank you so much, you girls are awesome! Just complete the registrations as far as you can and submit them. Not sure what paperwork you need to submit but get your registration in without them. I think you will find that all the popular schools on here are all co-ed - I can only think of 1 girls school and don;t know anything about it. I didn't have to submit any paperwork when I sent in school applications. What age and year groups are you looking at? You might find you will be able to get them into great schools for your time frame as I know some people are leaving around now and will leave around Easter too so some schools are going to have places come up and you are not allowed to transfer from one school in Dubai to another after sometime in January so you might find it easier to be placed when you get here. My kids go to Repton and are doing very well. They are happy and love school. They are in yr 3 and yr 1 and I've been at the school with my little girl starting in Nursery - we are very happy with their progress and we have had super teachers.

You can see a Dr without being resident here - you just have to pay! My Mum needed a dr once when she was over and we were never asked for residency - just made an appointment filled in the registration form and paid the bill! You can get most drugs direct from a pharmacy without a prescription. If you list the drugs you need I am happy to check that they are stocked here for you when I next go into a pharmacy or others - especially from Australia - will be able to tell you if the drug is readily available here. But yes, you can just go in and buy over the counter. This is what I do for my little boys asthma inhaler.

DD was vaccinated against cpox at 7 months, DS was not. When DD was 3 she got cpox, and she had 3 tiny spots on her chest. DS age 1 caught it from her and was hosiptalized, he was so very sick. It brings tears to my eyes, just remembering how ill he was. I didn't get him vaccinated because 'friends' told me I had wasted my time vaccinating DD as she would catch it anyway. I wish I had not listened. edited by Servants Quarters on 17/01/2011 So really they need to let the mums know that the vaccine for cp might not stop them catching it but it will be a very much more milder dose. We were never offered the jab in the UK anyway and my 2 got it mildly when they were both pretty young so it wasn't an issue for me but I think I would have been in the camp of - well if they catch it anyway - why bother - shame it's not made clear to the mums that it's better to do than not.....

You need to make it into a multi region player. there are codes that you need to enter to make it able to read all regions. Worth going onto google and putting in the make of your dvd player and asking about multi region codes then just enter on the remote control and you've got it!

Thanks a lot ladies. Good to know that research was a fraud. So, has anyone given chicken pox vaccine at the same time with MMR or later? In my limited experience, the chickenpox vaccine is worse than useless - is it obligatory here? I know it is in the States. Worse than useless is subjective I guess... As I said, I have a child with a long term illness..for her, chicken pox, rota virus vaccines etc... ARE critical. While they aren't mandatory, the less she is exposed to those illnesses the longer her kidney's will function. So, by vaccinating your children, you could be saving another child. edited by GoddessUli on 17/01/2011 I thought that the children still get chicken pox - just a milder version of it even having had the vaccine. I'm sure a couple of my friends kids got chicken pox and they had had the jab......

Thanks a lot ladies. Good to know that research was a fraud. So, has anyone given chicken pox vaccine at the same time with MMR or later? I wouldn't give another vaccine at teh same time - I think mmr is enough on it's own. You can vaccinate against chicken pox later if you want to....... We never gave ours the chickenpox vaccine - it's not one that is routinely offered in the UK - in fact I only heard about it when moving here. Both my kids have had chicken pox and breezed through it. <em>edited by Clairehdp on 17/01/2011</em>

Just updating ......... she apologised and said she wants to stay with us so I have agreed! Let's see if I come home one day to find she has gone with all my shoes and bags !!! Fingers crossed she turns out to be one of the good maids and it was just an early hiccup xx So she's the one in charge in your house then!!! I would take Wikkid up on her maid - interview her at least - there are plenty of very good housekeepers here who are truthful and honest - this one is no good and she's the one in charge as you've backed down. I would lock everything up and would feel very uncomfortable in my own home if I were you.......

I chose MMR after hours of research and talking to many medical specialists. I chose the mmr over individual jabs too as I couldn't face my kids having 3 seperate jabs - they both hate injections with a passion. both were fine and neither even had a rise in temperature - just bumbled along as normal.

They do this all the time here. My little girl chose a toy - when she went to the till with her pocket money the toy came up on the till at more money than it was marked as - the guy peeled the price tag off - luckily I was lurking in the corner (she wanted to buy it herself and use her own money and get her change!) and pointed out in a very loud voice that he has to sell the toy at the marked up price - if I hadn't been there and insisted he was going to sell it at the price on the till!.....so watch out everyone!

Please also factor in the cost of taking the animal back to your home country with you should you have to leave Dubai. Sadly, many many animals are abandoned because owners have not realised how expensive it is to fly the animals out. Also make sure that all vaccinations needed for your home country are kept up to date too. good luck I hope you find your forever pet.

To be honest - if her taking time out doesn't suit your family situation but it's better for her to go back to her family in the summer when the schools are off - then that's when she has to take her holiday. Has she completed her years service and her holiday is due? If not, then perhaps you can explain to her that this is when she will be able to take her vacation - not in March...... We all have to complete vacation request forms - some are rejected - so....if it really causes you a big problem having her away at this time - then you have to reject her holiday request. The exit pass is so that they can exit Manila to return to Dubai - the Polo office is here - Deira area - talk to your maid she will know all about it and if she doesn't she will be able to ask the maid mafia who know everything! You need to complete this before she travels and it allows her to easily leave Manila to come back to work for you again.

they can go see a dr here and just pay for the consultation which will be around 300 dhs (not 100% sure on the price). Or, as the op says, if they know they need antibiotics and know which ones etc then just pop into any pharmacy here and buy them over the counter - you don't need a prescription.
