The London eye is a great thing to do - amazing views of the city. Take a duck tour. - they drive around the city and thence you onto the Thames - very informative bad great fun. Champagne and smoked salmon in Harrodsburg food hall - got to be done! Then go upstairs for a delicious ice crem in their ice cream parlour. As DB says so much to see and do - London is a beautiful city. I would add to her excellent list the following A trip to Chinatown for fabulous Chinese food As far as restaurants go these are ones I have been to recently and would highly recommend The woleseley The ivy The savoy grill Michael Nadra in chiswick Afternoon tea is gorgeous at browns hotel. Fortune and mason is a gorgeous store to visit take tea in the fountain restaurant. DB - I'd forgotten about spoon - I loved it there - will try and go there again soon. Enjoy your trip

not an exit strategy as such but ive stopped saving here.. all my savings are offshore so if the poo hits the fan and we need to leave we will.. destintion will most probably be back to the UK for a short period then we will look at another country. The job situation in the UK is grim and I dont fancy being a branch manager for Pound Stretcher ! Oh, Pound Stretcher folded, didn't you hear? Only the pound shop is left! Jess - keep up! It's a recession there are now 99p stores!

The job situation in the UK is grim and I dont fancy being a branch manager for Pound Stretcher ! We are in the uk and the job market is not as grim as people have you believe. My nephew has just landed himself a corker of a job straight out of college ( he's a hard grafter mind you and knocked on many doors to get it! ) and my husband is head hunted on a regular basis. All our friends are in good jobs and a number of our neighbours have either just had promotions or moved jobs. It's nowhere near as awful as you read in te papers. We had an opportunity to come back to Dubai a few months ago and - after much deliberation because we really loved it there - we are also loving it here in the uk too and have chosen to stay here! I was very wary about returning to the uk but it's been a fantastic experience for us and our kids who are loving being at school in the uk, enjoying the outdoors and finding out about their culture in their home country. So if you did have to leave in a hurry I can assure you that it's not a terrible place to be! The Olympic euphoria is still here too which is great now were looking forward to Halloween and a big bonfire night - life is good although a bit cooler!

Actually OP, beyond the issue of housework and apples, and shopping, the important issue is parenting responsibilities. Regardless of who works or stays at home, or who pays the bills, the parents really should share parenting 50/50. Irrespective, the children really need time with both parents. They dont know that your salary doesnt pay the mortgage, they just see their mummy working very hard and meeting all of their needs too. Do they get to spend much time with their dad and does he help out with their various activities etc? I agree hilsbils in an ideal world a 50/50 parenting split would be fabulous but often with the hours the guys work it's pretty impossible. I know in my house we can't get anywhere near that ratio but.....my dh is happy to be the bad guy if things get tough. Having said that ....when he's in the country he is also the good guy too! He's the giver of pocket money based on the weeks behaviour so that works well but most times I have to deal with the homework and discipline issues as he's not here. I forget homework but now mine are a bit older I'm very comfortable writing in their book that it was missed and we will make it up. It's amazing when this happens how little ones suddenly remember their homework themselves!!!!!! My dh travels so much but when he is home he is fantastic with the kids and sometimes going to a museum or reading with him is better than turning in a piece of homework that can be done another time. I'm envious of those who can get a 50/50 parenting ratio lucky you. What I find hard is having to deal with something on the spot - you do what you think is right at the time and when I chat through the situation with my husband and i always ask if he would have done the same - most times its a yes but sometimes he might come up with a different way to handle the situation - he's great and always supports me but I would love for him to be here more so he could handle situations in hs way too as I think 2 people's view is always better. We do our best don't we! edited by Clairehdp on 23/09/2012

Don't beat yourself up - your dh and your child could also have remembered. I know we all like to think we are super women but...from time to time we get something wrong and.....the world still spins..... It's not the end of the world. You don't say how old your child s - if he/she is young then it doesn't matter the teachers know little kids get tired and need down time. If your child is older then it's time they take some responsibility themselves. I think you need a little chat with dh about shared parenting!!!......

Just a word of warning - if you are looking to employ a couple you need to make sure they are married ( ask for proof and check that carefully too) some couples say they are married - rhey are not and you can get into trouble if they are living with you.

We also had some lightweight down duvets from ikea and they are great. According to the catalogue they are still available i would never buy a synthetic duvet so was surprised to read they were not selling down duvets anymore as i recently bought new ones but in spain. Ive checked the catalogue for uae and there are plenty of down duvets for sale. This is the one we had - lightweight and perfect for the dubai hot nights http://www.ikea.com/ae/en/catalog/products/90131445/

I didn't realise that some schools mix up the classes every year - to be honest - with the turnover of people in Dubai I don't think that's necessary. At the school we were at they were changed going into year 1 and then again going into year 3. At the school we are at now in the UK the children stay in the same classes until year 3 so my little girls class has been mixed up and spread out as they go from 2 classes per year group to 3 classes per year group. I'm not a fan of changing every year but changing ever couple of years is good and gives the children social skills on how to form new friendships. I agree with others - it's the parents that find it harder than the kids! I love cocopops view that it extends your social circle! love it!

I lost a diamond from one of my rings. It has 4 diamonds and I got it at the gold and diamond park. I took it to a very good jeweller in the UK and asked them to replace the diamond with the same ccc diamond as the others. In the UK replacing the one diamond cost the same as what I paid for the whole ring! So..... definitely get it replaced at g and d park. Mine was insured so it was fine but.....if I had been paying myself I would most definitely have waited and replaced it on a Dubai trip.

I love that so many parents here are so very passionate about their children's education. Personally, I feel education is only as successful as the supportive parents behind the child and the school, respectively. As a parent who has had children in the Dubai system and now in the UK private system I can confirm that (IMO) it all boils down to the teachers.......as far as I can see - it makes no difference if you have the biggest pool or the swankiest performing arts centre - at the end of the day it is the teaching staff teaching your children that make the difference. I personally couldn't give a stuff about the best of this or the best of that - I just want to know that what happens behind the classroom door is the best it can be and....so far....we've had superb teachers both in dubai and in the UK.....long may that continue! edited by Clairehdp on 01/09/2012

If it's a very new law the chances are that some of the immigration offices won't stick to it. I remember when they changed the law re philipinos having to leave dubai and come back in I was just about to embark on a new sponsorship. I always used the Jebel Ali immigration and found them all to be really helpful. I went in and started the sponsorship process and it was absolutely fine - at no point did she have to leave the country. They placed a stamp over her tourist visa that said something like status change and the process was completed as soon as her medical was done. I paid the extra for an urgent medical (wasn't alot more) just so I could have the results the same day and was able to complete the sponsorship the next day! there's also a ladies line so you can go in - get the typing done by the guys there and have the whole process done easily. I would kick off the process, take your maid to the Satwa clinic for her medical and complete the process yourself at Jebel Ali. It takes a while for a new law to filter through so you might just be lucky. It makes me smile when I hear how long PROs take to process visas!

there are lots of units in Dragonmart that sell these type of lights. Definitley worth a trip down there and strolling around to find what you want and then haggle! I got some really beautiful ones from a garden furniture store right at the very end of Dragonmart - they were a much higher quality but were loads cheaper than the ones you can buy in the madinat. There are lots to choose from and I'm sure you'll find just what you want there for the price you want to pay.

If you have some spare hours why not join Sailability and help special needs/disabled children to learn to sail. That way you will get out onto the water but you get the opportunity to help a child enjoy the wonder of being out on the water. They are always looking for sailing volunteers. You coud take your instructor course and teach the children. It was one of the best things I did - I looked forward to my wednesday mrnins and spending my time with such awesome people. Very rewarding for everyone. Contact disc and ask to speak to the Sailability coordinator. They will be starting up soon for the new season.

Ok. I checked out the classified section and all drivers need visa. We need a service that will provide us with a driver thst already has a visa and a car.Does anyone know if taxi companies in dubai offer this service? I would not use dubi taxis fr my little ones school run. If you need a driving service then you may have to look at employing and sponsoring your own driver . I would, if I were you, start changing the baby's sleep waking her a little bit earlier every day from now so that when you get to Dubai with the time difference you can take her nd do the school run yourself. I know you say it's not what you want to do but honestly it will be better for you all as you will meet other mums quickly and your kids will probably settle quicker if you can take them into their new school yourself rather than an unknown taxi driver. Good luck I'm sure it will work out fior you once you get here and see that us mums all have to spend so much time in our cars with our babies and kds and they all adapt and get used to it without too many issues. It's just the way it is in Dubai. edited by Clairehdp on 21/08/2012

My little boy had it really bad and the heat and being in the water o much didn't help. It jut seemed to get worse and worse. I eventually took him o a dermatologist who recommended removing the worst ones but he got very distressed and I couldn't put him through it. I saw a different dermatologist who offered 2 options one was the removal but I told him I'd not go through that again, the other was aldara cream. I took the aldara cream option. I wished I had used it as soon as he caught it because it was amazing. Within 2 weeks of using the cream he was clear with no scarring. Aldara is super expensive but it was covered on our insurance. When my little girl caught it I used the cream straightaway and he too was clear in a few weds. The feling in the uk s to eave and let it run it's course but when it gets so sore and painful I think the cream route is the way to go. My little boy had it really really bad. Thanks that's really helpful. My Son only has the early signs so I'll see if I can find the Aldara cream. Would be interested to know what 'super expensive' is though as I'm not sure our insurance will cover it! I think it was around 600 dhs and because he had so many I needed at least 2 boxes. They come in tiny little sachets.

I've had the worst disasters with Yorkshire puddings over the years. Even my friends from Yorkshire failed to get me making them! It became a mission for me to find a recipe that would turn out huge fluffy delicious Yorkshire puddings. I am very happy to tell you that I am now a member of the very smug group of women that can make the best yoekshires with my eyes closed! All thanks to my hero Nigella!! Her recipe uses more eggs than any other recipe I've ever used and you whisk the eggs getting loads of air in them and I promise you they come out beautifully every single time! I even make tiny ones as canapés with rare roast beef and horseradish! Here's the recipe for you - let me know if you use it what you think. http://www.nigella.com/kitchen-queries/view/701 I now make one big one in a big tin, muffin size ones and bite size ones it doesn't matter what size they just come out brilliantly! edited by Clairehdp on 19/08/2012

It will be far better for all of you if you do the school run. You say you are moving in September so your little one will presumably have a time difference so you may well find that he/she won't sleep til 10 am school time. You will find that you will meet people very quickly if you do the school run. Your little one will just have to adjust to the new routine. His/her routine is going to be shaken up with the move anyway so move the goalposts to fit in with the new schedule. It will be far more stressful for you with trying to coordinate a private school pick up.

both my children attended TCG - it was fantastic and they thrived and loved every minute there. I moved my children after KG1 there so they didn't stay to finish KG2. If they are planning to go to Greenfield community School from TCG that's fine to stay for KG2 but I would not keep them there for KG2 if you want them to join a different school. I had 2 offers of places at 2 good schools (I only applied to 2!) but after KG1 from TCG not after KG2.
