Hi RM I hope you are doing OK. Think its best if you call immigration on this one - they are very helpful - specifically you can ask them if you can send your passport here for all of the visa transfers to be done and then sent back to you. That may work.

Does nobody have any advice? We can also give general advice. For example:- You must now speak in abbreviated terms in every sentence. Your child will go to DESS or JESS and follow this by going to JC. You will go to MOE to C4 and then go backhome to AR by SZR. You must however know that some things must not be abbreviated. If your child is going to Dubai College this will not be DC and you will go to Ibn Battuta or Dubai Mall (never IBM and DM) and your roads will be Um Suqeim St and All Khail not USS or AKR.

When they tell you there is nobody in the country to sign a cheque you can remind them that we live in an advanced technological world and that you will happily accept a bank transfer from wherever the LL is instead :)

As there are lots of incoming newbies I thought it would be helpful for us to impart our EW advice. Please continue. - if your DM (dear maid) does something outwith your usual customs (for example stamping on your mince or requesting mangoes to be sliced and brought to her) please post this so we can analyse and provide the best advice - do not post two sentences which coincidentally happen to rhyme. You have been warned - from time to time you may feel the need to ask WHO Alex is and why he cannot polish his own shoes. Don't bother asking, there is no answer to this riddle - there may be some occasions where posters vanish only to resurface at a later date with a similar yet cryptically different name. Do not question the circumstances of these mysterious happenings. - the references to The Cucumber Seller are purely circumstantial and do not in any way relate to a real cucumber seller. Even if he is wearing very crisp clothing.

Just ask yourself what you have to lose - obviously assuming you have the financial means to relocate and rent etc. Your friends ad family will be queuing up to visit so in terms of two years away from them it will fly by. What you have to gain on the other hand:- A chance to live the lives you want to live every weekend. For some that is brunches, boat parties etc. But you don't need to live like that if you don't have the means to. Evening picnics on the beach watching kite surfers, camping in the desert with a 2nd hand tent and an omelette paratha for breakfast from a streetside cafe on the way home, barbecues with good friends - all very very cheap ways of having a great time here. Bear in mind that most people take a year to feel truly settled and you won't want to go home after two years ;). Oh and I disagree with previous posters re children, obv yes life is more expensive with school fees etc but in terms of cultural diversity and awareness and having friends from all corners of the world, the UAE is an amazing place for your children to grow up. Good luck with your decision :)

Hi fat much If the exit is closed you can come off at the business bay exit but don't turn into the road with the traffic lights, come down past Dubai mall metro. Although those roads are all a bit confusing and to get to building 3 I am not sure - may be easier to park in dxb mall and walk over?

You should seriously consider reporting anyone receiving gas to ET - that is incredibly dangerous.

Welcome!! You'll make friends in no time don't worry. Especially at school - you'll find lots of people in similar circumstances so don't feel shy about putting yourself out there (so to speak)! Don't ever feel lonely as EW is always here for some virtual chit chat. :)

Shzee before you got married did you know you'd be with the in laws for so long? Is is this a cultural situation you knew about beforehand? Or is it just that DH is so frightened of the toxic MIL - this situation needs to change Is it possible for you to start looking for suitable affordable places and suggest them to DH? I would be concerned about his 'next year' promises. As they sound vague and you need to be looking now!

It will be interesting to hear how this one turns out. I don't agree that this would be considered maternity leave, it is not. It is more like how a company would deal with an employee on doctors orders for any other ailment, should it be considered differently because it is pregnancy related? Please update us op on what MOL advise!

I must have been here too long because I think the roads are [i'>totally[/i'> logical. lol. See if this helps. Dubai has multiple parallel roads as follows, which essentially go in the same direction. Starting from the outer areas:- Parallel in a "Sharjah-Dubai-AD" direction (and reverse) Emirates Rd (old Bypass Road) then Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (old Emirates Rd) then Al Khail Road then Sheikh Zayed Road then Al Wasl Road then Beach Road then the Sea A small selection of the roads crossing these in a "beach to the desert" direction are: Rebat St then Ras Al Khor Rd then Al Ain Rd then Um Suqeim St then Hessa St then Lahbab St At each place where the two sets of roads intersect, there will be a spaghetti junction where you can turn in any direction. When you get into the town/residential areas they are mostly all laid out in a grid section and if you get lost just try and work out if the sea is on your right or left, and if you are facing Abu Dhabi direction or Sharjah direction. It's helpful to think of AD as South, and Sharjah as North. I've never had a GPS and also don't really get lost as I think if you can remember the above you can usually just come off at the next intersection and turn round. Don't worry, you'll soon find your way around. *Disclaimer, unless you are in the back area of JLT/Jumeirah Park/etc as there is no chance*

Hi Appletiser, that changed a few years ago. OP, go to this link. https://indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa/info1.jsp Select the country as UAE, then Dubai, then UK for nationality and take it from there. Although it is great news if this has changed but the last time we did one it was March and it was definitely still required then.

It is not done at the embassy it is done here http://www.blsindiavisa-uae.com/ Please be aware of the different passport photo size for the Indian visa process...these should be 1 inch x 1 inch not standard photo size (and yes it will be rejected for this and any other typo etc!)

The car should have followed you and stopped on the side to assess any damage. CCTV in the area will show that you pulled over but they had driven off so you should be ok. Just keep a note of the day/time/details while they are still fresh in your mind.

Stiches in Village Mall in Jumeirah have a good reputation but you'll pay much more than you would for your standard side-street Satwa tailor.

I can see both sides of this argument - i never had help at home and would have felt guilty/selfish getting a babysitter for some 'me time' (for some reason currently unknown, now I would run at top speed to the nearest salon and take whatever time i could get lol) so I used to be guilty of doing this. However now conversely if I went to a salon now I would probably be a bit irritated if there was a child there. A great concept would be a salon with a little soft play area for children on the side with a nanny - mums can have their me time without feeling guilty or requiring to get help in, and the children would be safe and happy.

You can ask some gardening landscape companies to give you a quote as well, as presumably if you buy it from Ace you'd have to install it yourselves?! Get a few different quotes but remember to haggle!

you are not allowed friends. Unless you meet them at a coffee morning organised by EW. Until then you must imagine what the person looks like and you must only talk to them on EW. This is a top EW rule and must be obeyed at all times.

I agree with Marroosh. There are sites which go through your email contact list and compare it to the email contact list of everyone else on your list. When they see the same people each list they would automatically notify the both parties of everyone on the other party's list to see if there are any connections. I don't think anyone has been stalking you.

I think you should look at it from the point of view of how it would work if you were home all day with your LO. Would you have time to cook, clean and look after your LO? Yes, mostly you would, give or take the odd exception (a particularly challenging day/LO sick etc). Therefore it is not unreasonable to ask her to do the same.

2 of the days are likely to be the weekend when you would have been off anyway, but we can probably expect some fireworks (maybe in the Festival City area) and although the City is a little quieter with many people away on hols, you can expect the airports and hotels to be busy with people coming in from Gulf countries for Eid and lots of celebrations and lively things going on. :)
