I hope you have a great day at the museum! Thanks, just debating if it's better to take the Metro or the car, apparentley you can take the green line to Al Fahidi station and it should be nearby :). I believe you can, the only trouble taking the car is that finding parking in the area is a bit of a nightmare.

I've been here for quite a long time too, but haven't gone yet but some of DH's cousins went not too long ago and told us it was free but I could be totally wrong though. Let me know if it's as interesting as it seems if you get to go!

Crazy, I was naughty and I did caramelize the onions first before I put them in it. it really makes a difference :) I'm half tempted to pass along a few other good 'tea' or party munchable recipes lol

I suppose some people just have to have something to gripe about :) EW has been immensely helpful to a lot of women, no matter how 'overdone' some threads may be, for some people it's just faster to type up a new thread to ask about something important than to slog through all the old posts, or use a not always handy search function.

If all else fails......here's some ideas I fetched online: -Leave something stinky in a bag by the door( you have a dog, don't you? *wink wink*) . The smell will make them move away. It will bother you for a while but they won't sit by your door ( and you will probably be the talk of the corridor for a while....LOL) - Buy one of those "ding dong!" electronic sensors. It will keep ringing at the slightest movement. They will figure out they're causing it and move away. (probably the best solution) - Can you decorate your doorway with some pots and plants? So buy a few large ones, leaving no room for them to sit near it. Plant something "thorny" like Cactus. Even fake ones, as there might not be much light for real plants. - Download some Halloween songs and screams. (I have a whole playlist we used to leave playing at home when we would go trick or treating, from Psycho themes to AAAAAAAAHs to BOOOOOOOOs) , ya know, "scary stuff". It will hopefully scare them away, leave it playing loud when you are not at home. Might scare the kids too but hey, you're in your home. - If all else fails, borrow a bigger dog from a friend (or maybe two.... or three) and come home with them a few times....... Good luck (AM i EVIL? MWAHAHAHAHA!) :D That is brilliant especially big noisy dogs that bark even if someone is just walking past the door! and I'm sure you have a wee gap under your door as most apartments here seem to, jab the maids in the back side with a stick or something till they get the point!

crazyleochic, i read this post this morning and loved the idea of your quiche using potato instead of pastry (because DH doesnt like pastry, i cant be bothered to make it anyway and the potato sounded much more interesting and healthier) so i made it and want to thank you, it is really great. I put thinly sliced tomato in mine then eggs, onions and lots of cheese. Nadia, have a go if you have time, its yummy! :D I'm really glad you enjoyed the recipe :) it just kinda happened out of the blue for me one day as I'd wanted to try my hand at making quiche but had no experience making pastry and once my DH tried it, it's since become a weekly thing! BTW caramelized onions seem to be pretty awesome to add in :)

Old fashioned girls sleep over party? Borrow/rent/buy a big screen for a couple of great girlie movies to be watched while in their PJs in sleeping bags munching junk food, popcorn, nachos, hotdogs, chocolate etc. Buy a candy floss machine + let them make their own or chocolate fountain. A bit of freedom from watching adults for sure. I just ran this idea by my 11 year old niece + she said she'd like this. I like your idea KT, and why not let them build a huge blanket fort/tent too that can be so much fun!

it happens to me too, either when I've had one too many cups of coffee or when I've taken madicine that has a strong sedative in it and I'm resisting the urge to sleep due to said sedative.

they usually want to hold the passports so that they're sure you don't abscond your visa though it is illegal for them to do so. Unfortunately it's quite a common practice here, I had one HR guy pestering me for mine (and I was on my husband's visa) :\: I wasn't giving it up for anything.

You could throw a noisy tea party with some friends who are particularly good at being loud and obnoxious around that time. :) I think you're well withing your rights to say something, enough is enough. I've been in that situation too, my DH works 6 days a week, and he'd be home on Friday trying to catch up on sleep and wouldn't be able to because all the kids on that floor would be playing in the hallway, so he'd wind up grumpy the rest of the day.

Loving the ideas....can't really make a dozen things since their is little time between nursing the baby and running after a toddler, school runs etc...most of you know what its like!! On the sweet end, have decided to do one of Nigella's esspresso and walnut cakes....always looks very fancy and tastes fab with coffee so would make for a sweet ending. Doing watermelon, mint and feta cheese skewers....they look lovely with almost no effort! Perhaps will get some petit fours - anyone know where to get some nice ones around the Springs/Meadows area? I would love to do some kind of pie/quiche but I have to admit that I don't know how. Can I pick one up ready made or order?? Am happy to make sandwiches but need some ideas for fillings. Oh and did I mention that there will also be five kids between the ages 7-2yrs!! Thinking of just doing some sticky drumsticks and some pasta for them since that is close to dinner time for most kids. What do you ladies think? making a quiche is insanely easy in my oppinion, though I've usually just gone with a potato crust because I'm horrible at making pastry and DH won't buy it ready made. Just get a pie tin/brownie pan/smallish cake pan and oil it a bit, preheat your oven to 175-180. Now the potato you can do two different ways, you can either slice it really thin and layer it on the bottom and sides (which is what I used to do as I didn't have a grater) or you can grate the potato and spread it all on the pan put a little salt over the potato (and I tend to use some curry powder too but that's up to you) and bake it for about 20 minuets or until the potato is just starting to crisp up, mix up 5-7 eggs with a bit of milk salt and pepper and pour over the potato crust, add whatever you'd like into it, cooked chicken, cheese, tomatoes, whatever you like, and bake for about 30-40 minuets till the egg is fully cooked and voila! potato crusted quiche :)

I'm 5'3 and always wear flats as I like being petite :D Just to counter balance the taller > shorter theme of this thread ;) Wear what you like and what you think looks good, don't dress in what you think you should or shouldn't wear. I'm right there with you at 5'3 dairylea! I think in it's own way it's fun and kinda cute being short (sucks finding jeans short enough) though I think tall women in skinny jeans and heels look great too. Just dress how you like, what's comfortable and makes you happy.

I read somewhere that the U.S. are planning to use MRI technology to scan your shoes so you won't have to take them off anymore at the airport. oh plesae I doubt they'd be able to pull something like that off really.

one big problem is the scanners aren't particularly safe health-wise. I've had more than one doctor tell me that the radiation in them is too high, I don't feel like getting cancer in ten years just so the rest of the world is assured that I'm not carrying anything dangerous. We went through Chicago's airport just last month and I refused to go through the scanner and took the metal detector + 'enhanced' pat-down.

I was taking a personal day from high school, and was still asleep when my nutty mother came in and declared 'We're at war!' and walked back out without saying anything else. I got up a ten or fifteen minuets later and sat watching the news in the living room in absolute shock.

totally agree with QF on this one, parents need to take responsibility for these things regardless of the babysitter's actions. Children need to be taught to understand that vitamins are medicines, and not candy thought he design of children's vitamins bothers me a bit too. They're made to look and taste like candy, which makes them all the more of a problem. Parents need to put these things out of sight completely, somewhere that's closed and locked.

Vikings fan here... we purchased the NFL package online. You can use a cord and hook up your laptop to the tv, the website archives all games so it is really nice to watch them whenever you want instead of getting up in the middle of the night to watch a game. Do they have a package for college football?

I haven't really found anywhere here to actually get to watch American football unfortunately. The only option I've found is to find websites that stream games live or radio stations websites in the states that play the games in audio etc.

whenever I've attempted to, Amazon simply wouldn't ship food items here unfortunately, though you can get away with quite a bit when you bring stuff with you. Though if you live close to the Marina area, I go back stateside in November if there are any favorites you're needing by then I'd be more than happy to add a few extra items to the luggage for you. :)

if you're a Dr. Pepper fan, pack that it's expensive here! possibly your favorite shampoo depending on the brand. I love Aussie hair care stuff, and cant find it here so I stock up each trip. Ranch dressing (if you love it and can't live without it), your favorite makeup/skincare stuff etc. Though if you get here and realize there's stuff you forgot and are kicking yourself, I go back stateside in November. It shouldn't be a problem for me to bring things back for you.

awww thanks ladies i am excited to get help and ideas from all ofyou, i will be looking at the sites you shared too. i really want to make my hubby something special, that reminds him of home, he is really picky, and my cooking "just isnt the same as grandmas," poor guy, too bad lol, but i want to do my best and try to make it special, i wish there were raw penuts her for "boiled penuts," if any of you see them will you le me know... i have never had them, but he talks about them all the time. oohhh and francieB, he loves his P.O.R.K. me too yum yum! i was thinking pork chops mashed potatoes, cornbread and veggies, i have to make due, with what i can find here in the uae... are there any black eyed peas around, lol, honestly i dont even know what to look for. can you think of a healthy souther recipie? i am not into fried foods really, except i am at some point going to attempt beignets... I'm pretty sure you can find black eyed peas here, but they're labeled as something else, I know I've seen the dried ones in most markets where you can by the dried lentils etc, and I think I've seen them canned but I can't place my finger on just where... maybe one of the co-op stores but not sure which one. The greens would certainly be a really healthy part of the meal. You could always try some of Alton Brown's recipes, technically he's from the south :) and his show's are pretty informative with pretty good ideas.

No children, not married, usually happyish until we have an argument and then he never backs down. I suppose I will have to swallow my pride and talk to him. or just smack him round the head with a cast iron frying pan until you knock some sense in :D Edited as i cant spell edited by Princess_I on 08/09/2011 I second your idea Princess!
