Hi! First of all, I have a 6 week old baby and would like to exercise outdoors with others in a similar situation. Coffee mornings are fab, but I want to be more active. :) A friend of mine does a weekly outdoor exercise class on the Palm for pre and postnatal ladies. Eg. Walking, and body weight exercises like squats and lunges. It sounds like a nice way to socialize and stay fit throughout pregnancy and tone up postpartum. I'd love to join, but too far for me to travel. Is there anything like this in the Downtown area??? X

Hi Admin! :) First of all I want to say that I really enjoy your weekly coffee meet-ups. I've met some lovely ladies and friendships are blossoming. However... Myself and a few other ladies have noticed that the service at Little More Cafe (Dubai Marina Mall) has been progressively getting worse. We are paying customers and it's almost like we're a nuisance to the staff. Also, the seating arrangments are cramped and awkward, and it's difficult to have conversations. Have you received any other feedback? Will it be possible to change venues? When Cafe Nero reopens will we switch back? Vikki, your host is absolutely wonderful and always does her best to make everyone feel welcome and accommodated. I'm just disappointed with the venue, that's all. Kind Regards x

Hi Abet! The busiest coffee morning for Dec Mums is Little More Cafe, Dubai Marina. Come on down and meet us once you're on maternity leave. Friendships are blossoming! There are other working Dec Mums in the group.. So we meet up for Pilates on Saturdays and also doing a Saturday brunch soon :)

Congratulations on becoming a new Mum!! Yes, I've heard of ANZA, they have coffee mornings for Mum's & toddlers once a month I think... Yeah, they do ANZAC day events etc. I've never been to an event, but I should definitely get more involved with the Aussie community!

Another thought re: 200 calorie coffees... According to the treadmill tracker, I burn around 100 calories every 15 minutes when walking at a speed of 6km/hr on incline. So... As an example, to burn just one coffee, it would take 30 minutes. So... to get past the calorie burning range and into the fat burning range, you'd have to workout harder and/or longer, yes or no?

Beebers - You sound like a super fun person to train with! Very knowledgable when it comes to health and fitness! Are you a PT? Oh yeah, 200 squats are definitely something to build up to, but they are an amazing workout for your butt, hey?! I'm still sore from leg day which was 3 days ago. I do body weight squats only. I know the OP has a bad knee, but perhaps it's something she can keep in mind for the future when it heals. :) Yes - MFP is a pain, but for me it totally worked. It makes you think twice about what you put in your mouth... Especially when you have to go through the trouble of recording it! Suzy - YES - taking photos of everything you eat is also really effective!! Less of a pain than MFP. I did it for a short time, and would put together a collage at the end of each day to have a complete overview of what I ate. You want all those pics to look healthy :)

OK, to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume. Like others have said, MyFitnessPal is an excellent tool for tracking your calories. It really helped me to lose weight. I lost 12kg over a 2 year time frame (dropped 2 dress sizes - from UK size 12 to 8). Yes, I lost the weight gradually, but I've kept it off, which is good quality weight loss. Half the battle of losing weight, is maintenance. Once you've reached your goal weight or dress size, don't slack off, you need to work at it. 4 years later, I still train at the gym 6 days a week and I watch what I eat. (I don't need to use MyFitnessPal anymore as I'm now educated in how many calories are contained in different types of foods). I do love my food though! Don't think of food as the enemy, think of food as your friend, your fuel to get you through each day. Now, I'm 6 months pregnant, and naturally, I'm slowly gaining weight each month. It does freak me out a little as I know how much work it will be to lose the baby weight, but I know I'll be able to do it! What matters more than anything right now is being healthy and giving my baby all the nutrients he needs to grow. For you, you have time constraints to exercise because you work long hours. For me, my obstacle will soon be functioning on lack of sleep, and thinking of ways of incorporating my baby into my workouts. What I was previously doing wrong was a) eating too much b) not exercising regularly enough. I agree that you should consume 5 small meals a day. You should never feel stuffed after a meal, or starving shortly after. Have some healthy snacks on hand, like almonds or a banana to keep those hunger pangs at bay. This keeps your metabolism kicking along nicely. It sounds like you feel too tired to work out when you arrive home from work. Well, how 'bout you jump out of bed early and do a morning workout? How long is your lunch break? Is it possible to fit in a workout during lunch? Is it possible for you to walk to work? When I was training really hard to lose weight, I'd do 2 workouts a day. I'd go for a 30 minute jog before breakfast to get my metabolism kick started. Then my reward was a delicious, nutritious breakfast. I'd already felt like I had accomplished something for the day! Then, after breakfast I'd do a weights workout... Or if I was having a rest day from weights, I'd go for another 45 minute run in the afternoon (before dinner) - more rigorous than the gentle run in the morning. Cardiovascular exercise is great for burning calories, and lifting weights is necessary for toning the muscles. Body weight exercises, like squats and lunges, are good for toning also. I believe running to be a very efficient way to burn calories - especially high intensity interval training - so I hope once your knee heals you'll be able to take up running again. My Doctor has advised me not to run during pregnancy, so I walk everywhere. The thing to keep in mind is, if you're walking instead of running, you'll have to spend twice as long exercising as you're burning calories at a slower rate. To get your heart pumping in the cardio zone try putting your treadmill on an incline. Take the stairs wherever you can, this is an excellent exercise for your butt and thighs. Do 100 squats in a row, then take a short rest and do another 100. Have someone check that your technique is correct though, otherwise if you're not squatting deep enough, you may be working your quads instead of your glutes. You do have to work around injuries. For example, I used to really like doing chest press, but it's too uncomfortable to be lying on my back right now. So what I do instead is, use equipment where I can train my chest whilst sitting or standing upright. Also, I find group exercise classes or having a gym buddy very motivating, rather than working out on my own. Choose an exercise that's fun to do. Hang around health conscious people so their healthy habits rub off on you. Take before and after photos of yourself so you can see the progress you've made. This is one of the best things I ever did to keep me motivated to lose weight. Also, record your measurements once a week - around your tummy, hips, butt and thighs. I plotted this on a graph and could clearly see my weight loss progress. Consistency is key - it's what you do most of the time that matters. Exercise most days, and make sure most of your meals are healthy. Rest days are important too, and reward yourself every so often with a 'cheat meal'. Hope this helps x

Hi! How exciting for you both! Dubai is so spread out, to help you narrow down some ideas, do you know roughly what area you'll be living in? Eg. Marina, Downtown? Also, brunches vary greatly - if you're a young 20-something-party-animal (or 30 to 50 year old ;) ) you'll probably love Saffron on The Palm. If you're after something a little more classy, then you'll be amazed by the Al Qasr brunch. The Observatory (on the 52nd floor of the Marriott) has spectacular views of The Palm & Marina. Such a treat to take friends & family there. You could also go along to one of the Expat Woman coffee mornings to make some contacts :)

Di@DXB - Wow, I've never heard of using coconut oil to treat acne before. I did a bit of Googling, and like you said, it does have lots of positive reviews. Question: how do you incorporate the coconut oil into your skincare routine? Do you cleanse with something else first and then apply coconut oil afterwards to moisturize? Or does the coconut oil double as a cleanser and moisturizer? Many thanks x

Our skin varies so much from one person to the next doesn't it?! I've tried so many products... I guess it's a matter of trial and error to figure out what works best for your skin type... Just a few days ago, before I started this thread, I ran out of my SKII cleanser - expensive Japanese brand - that wasn't improving my acne at all and was very drying... Since then, I've changed my skincare routine and my skin has improved slightly... So I bought Olay Total Effects 7 in 1 from the supermarket, and began cleansing morning and night. I do what you said you do Marroosh.. At night cleanse twice to first remove the make-up and secondly to cleanse. I also change my wash cloth regularly. I find Olay to be gentle, creamy, moisturizing and cleansing. Anyone else use this also? Afterwards I've been moisturizing with Human + Kind Family Remedy, which is sold at Boots and the Organic Shop. It contains a number of ingredients, one of which is tea tree oil. So it's got me thinking... Perhaps it's the tea tree oil that's helping my skin? Like I said before, my skin still isn't perfect, so I'm still searching for an amazing cleanser! Once again, thanks for all your suggestions x

Madge, I agree with you whole-heartedly. If all rent across Dubai was paid on a monthly basis it would make rental scams much more difficult... Or at best non-existent? The current system is clearly flawed... However, with the current system the way it is, from a LL's perspective we have much more security and piece of mind if the rent is paid in one annual installment. Otherwise we feel that we put ourselves in the vulnerable position of being scammed again. Once bitten = twice shy. We hope our current tenant wants to live in our apartment for the next few years. All we expect is that she looks after the property and rent is paid on time. We want her to be happy. We won't increase the rent, property maintenance will be completed in a timely manner and service fees paid. Trust and respect - it's a 2 way street :)

Hi there, My DH & I became LL's in Dubai for the first time last year. We went through an agent to find a tenant for us. Ideally, if the tentant could manage it, we wanted the rent paid in one lump sum. However, he was new to Dubai etc, and negotiated to pay the rent quarterly. From our side that's brilliant, as back home rent is often paid monthly or fortnightly. The first cheque went through fine. Three months later when we deposited the second cheque, it bounced. We contacted our agent. She tried to contact the tenant, but he wasn't answering his mobile. She phoned his work, no answer there either. She went to his place of employment, and spoke to a security guard who said that the business had closed down months ago. So, she went to the apartment and he wasn't there either... It was then, and only then that we went to the police station. The policeman could see on his database that the tenant had left the country. We then asked if we could access our apartment since the tenant had fled. No. Absolutely not. We needed to give the tenant time to pay his rent. We needed to follow the correct protocols and get an eviction notice put on the door etc. This all took some time... After a few weeks, Someone (Mr. B) phoned us, wondering what the heck was going on. He was so confused, asking why he was getting evicted... Turns out, our tenant had advertised our property on Dubizzle for a really low price, and collected a year's worth of rent from Mr. B. The tenant had forged documents that looked liked we'd given him power of attorney to rent out our property. BTW our tentant had done this rental scam to around 50 other properties. Long story short, it took 6 long months to gain access to our apartment again. We lost 6 months worth of rent and paid thousands of dirhams in legal fees. Our trust was broken for some time, but... We now have a new tenant in our apartment, and she has been fantastic. Our trust has been renewed. :)

Yeah, I noticed that there was a price increase from when we were there in Dec 2013 to when we went again in June 2014. We booked a non-window seat, but it was dead quiet when we went (12pm) and they gave us a window seat at no extra charge.

@ Britgirldubai - How fun & fabulous to set up your nursery! Wise move to do your shopping before Eid kicked in also! After last Thursday's coffee morning my DH & I bought our crib & dresser/change table from Mamas and Papas. Love it! BUT.. the mattress we wanted wasn't in stock, so the sales lady talked us into buying another one. For the moment we've kept the outer plastic on - may return it as we're not so sure it's firm enough for a new born. Will go to Mothercare today to compare with their high end mattress, as I've heard it's very good. Other than that, make sure it fits nice and snugly (no big gaps around the edges) :) x

Bbarmani - Myself & 2 other ladies from EW go to Zen Yoga in Media City. Typically we go on Tues evening (6:30pm) for prenatal yoga.. Very relaxing and energizing. On Saturday (12:15pm) we go to prenatal Pilates, which has more of a cardio focus. It's quite challenging, but fun! It is a very popular studio, so you have to book your spot in advance. :) This Sat we plan to meet for breakfast at 9:30, then go to Pilates afterwards. Let me know if you (or anyone else) want to join us. Are you able to make it to the coffee morning on Thurs? As I can give you the details then :)

I LOVE coffee, so I always get excited when I find a place that serves up a GREAT cup of Joe! I've lived in Dubai for a few years and I've finally found my favourite coffee shop. Raw Coffee in Al Quoz. The place was a little hard to find as it's nestled in between warehouses. But it was worth it as the cafe latte was the standard you get in Australia. Those baristas have been trained well! (I do like Tom & Serg also, but find the temperature of the coffee a touch cold, so I drink it too fast!) Kudos to Raw Coffee! It really depends on the barista, but some coffee shops are consistently good. :) These are my top 10!: 1. Raw Coffee (Al Quoz) 2. Tom & Serg (Al Quoz) 2. Barista Coffee (MoE) - equal 2nd ;) 3. Cafe Nero (Dubai Mall & Marina Mall) 4. Paul's (Dubai Mall & Mercato) 5. Limetree Cafe (Jumeirah Beach Rd) 6. Eataly (Dubai Mall) 7. mOre Cafe (MoE) 8. Jamaica Blue (Ibn Battuta Mall) -> haven't been to JB for a while though.. 9. The Archive (Safa Park - great place to go in cooler months when markets are on) 10. The Pantry Cafe (Opp Safa Park - they used to have a coffee happy hour.. Not sure if they still do??) edited by CrepeSuzette on 22/09/2014

Hi there, I'm borderline GD so I have to be careful I don't eat too many carbs also. One of my fave breakfast recipes is kale frittata: I found this one online..: in google type in 'Kale Frittata my kitchen in the Rockies' and it should come up. You can play around with the recipe by substituting kale for baby spinach, or bacon/salmon instead of salami or cheddar cheese instead of Parmesan. Something else I like to make is porridge made with pre-cooked quinoa and skim milk (instead of oats).. As quinoa is quite high in protein.. Topped with chia seeds and flaked almonds. :) HTH
