Mmh, I'm not sure what to make of this... Anyone experienced something similar? I have a maid for 2 years now that I really like. She comes 1x week for half a day, is efficient and reliable. I always tip well and sometimes give her "goodies" like vouchers I won't use or very good condition nice clothes I won't wear anymore. Now she just informed me that she will be away for a few weeks on "emergency medical leave" because her son in the Philippines had an accident. Without me prompting it and for the first time in 2 years, she takes out an envelope with lots of pictures of a nice boy - and then of a boy in a basic hospital horribly burned and obviously in pain. She explained that he had an accident at school where a cable started burning and couldn't escape. She said it in a very calm tone, not emotional or anything but I though everyone copes differently with a situation like that. But on a second look at the pictures I got suspicious: there was a time stamp on the "hospital" pictures which clearly read "2009" while the development date stamp (the little one you always get when developing pictures in a photo shop) on the back of the "happy kid" pictures read 2010. I didn't confront her with that, I just gave back the pictures and sad that I'm sorry for that and wish him all the best... She didn't ask for money or anything, simply took back the pictures and asked me if she should give the key back to me while she's away. I don't know what to make of that. On the one hand I never had any reason not to trust her, nothing ever disappeared (I even tested her from time to time by having counted money laying around and she never took anything) and she was always nice. On the other hand this situation was odd and the pictures somehow didn't feel right... Have you ever experienced a situation like that? Would you confront her with the time stamp topic?

DH company switched to them and so far not happy. They only cover 10 physio sessions in a year. I had a back injury that recurred six weeks after the initial injury and was worse the second time round. Then couldn't get any treatment at all for it. Worried about the maternity now, we are planning for a baby and don't want to switch insurers because of the exemptions. I think the 10 physio sessions per year are a standard in Dubai- our company uses Allianz and they have the same rule. So not sure others would cover more...

Try supermart.ae, they deliver almost everything and I found them to be very reliable in terms of timing. Other than that, if you want a close supermarket, there's Carrefour Express just off the bridge on Al Sufouh Road in the Marina Crown building (direction of JBR, then Uturn) or the Almaya supermarket in Internet City/KV (go out of Palm direction of Al Sufouh Rd, then immediately after tunnel turn right into Internet City, turn left in roundabout following parallel road to Al Sufouh (many speed humps). At traffic light turn left and immediately after turning, go into parking area of Office Park building, go to the end, Almaya has parking).

Very interesting thread.... I'm a very frequent flyer for work and vacation (typically renew EK Gold within 2-3 months of new year). 3-4 years ago, flying EK was my absolute top priority over any other airline because of the good prices, the fantastic service and also the ease of using your points for upgrades. Using points to purchase flights is really not worth it- the real value of the points is in upgrading because the monetary value per point is much higher that way. It always worked and I was a super happy customer. For the past few years however, I definitely realize that on popular routes (eg, LHR, FRA, BKK), all A380 routes, during weekends or popular times it is almost impossible to upgrade in advance via the Skywards hotline or website. Even with my status it's not possible and if I try to upgrade family members or friends that are visiting and have no status themselves, it's even worse. Now, that being said I always get the higher class upgrade on the counter when I pay with miles (and yes, true, on overbooked flights I also get upgraded for free), but the problem is the planneability: you have to pack for lower baggage allowance bec you can't be sure that you'll get the upgrade and then I'm annoyed because I didn't take all the stuff I wanted. You can't avail of the chauffeur service (which frankly, is in my view one of the reasons they make scheduled upgrading so difficult but on the counter upgrading so easy: they probably want to manage their costs with the chauffeur service, which in some cities is quite high..). You have to be at the airport much earlier, just to be sure... I'm really annoyed by this situation and my observation has been it's getting worse and worse: their prices get higher (by now, I have achieved EY's Gold status equivalent bec they're often so much cheaper that there's no way my company would understand why I wanted to fly EK when the service is more than comparable), but their service and their customer care gets worse. I also noticed that the call center agents often get quite impatient on the phone when asked for the upgrade situation- I assume that's because many customers might be complaining about this. EK should be really careful not falling for their own hubris, my company is not the only one that's gradually shifting to other carriers because of the ridiculous increase in prices and lack of customer service.

Thanks a lot to everyone for your answers! Esp. starsouthern's tip about the contracts is a good way to check out if they're serious about the prices! Will try that... @EnolaGay- had the same issue when leaving our last flat. The agent claimed he wanted just some pics of the view from our balcony, which I allowed, but later I find my furniture, some artistic shots of my plant arrangements and even pictures of my computer screen on their website... Had a good go at them and they finally took down the pictures they took behind my back, but was quite paranoid afterwards and didn't allow any agent to take pictures anymore.

Ladies, maybe I'm too suspicious, but I wanted to get your view on this: I'm looking into 3BR+maid villas at the moment and found a whole bunch of these in AR for 100k/year... had a look at them and at least during a normal viewing I couldn't make out anything immediately wrong with them. They were in good condition. Nevertheless, the price strikes me as far too low for Arabian Ranches (most others go for around 140-160k), so I wanted to see if anyone has heard anything about any "problem villas" (eg, burst pipes, history of issues etc) being on the market there...? Thanks a lot!

It depends on how much hassle you're willing to take for a cheaper ticket. Something that always works out much cheaper than starting your trip from Dubai is starting it from another Middle East destination, eg. Dubai-Houston: book one-way ticket DXB-Cairo (Fly Dubai etc.), then round-trip Cairo-Houston via Dubai (you will fly Cairo-DXB-Houston-DXB and then don't use the last lag DXB-Cairo). Price differences starting from destinations other than Dubai are huge since EK uses the revenues from local passengers to subsidize their low international fares for transit passengers.

Second the Almarai lactofree milk, it's great and in coffee you can't really taste the difference (though it's a bit sweeter I find, so no need for sugar :) ). Lulu's has great soymilk chocolate desserts etc.- they have a good selection of lactose (and also gluten-)free stuff in general.

Could they mean "Morning Dress" - top hat and tails for the men, very smart dresses and hats for the women, worn at both the ceremony and the reception? That would be "White Tie", the most formal form and very unusual for weddings (except maybe royal ones)... Does the invitation state "Black Tie" or "Black Tie optional"? If it's optional, short cocktail dresses would be fine. If it's Black Tie, it means tux and bowtie for men and long dress for ladies. However, a tux is normally only worn after 5pm for dinner and dance afterwards, not in the afternoon. Hence, if it's really a posh event, it certainly involves changing clothes after the ceremony and having Black Tie dress-code for the evening. Normally a Black Tie in the evening means quite a sophisticated ceremony as well, so it could be that hat for ladies is expected, so would definitely check back with the maid of honor or one of the bridesmaids about the bride's expectation.

Hey ladies, just wanted to share that Deepa's has a sale going on. Bought some really nice business shirt fabrics this morning for 12 AED/yard. Same quality as Regal cost around 60 AED/yard. And they had amazing Italian linen for summer shirts and trousers for 35 AED/yard as well. Question here: How much do you haggle in Satwa when stuff is already on sale? I mean, isn't it cheap to start negotiating when something's already 50% off or is that expected by the guys? I got another 50 AED or so in the end (they rounded down my bill) and was happy with it, but I was wondering whether I should've even started negotiating down the separate fabrics I bought...

I recently bought an old photo camera (late 19th or early 20th century), which is very pretty but unfortunately not in a very good condition. It needs restoring (eg, the leather casing is falling apart, the folds of the lens need updoing...). Is there anyone in Dubai who can do things like that? It's a genuine antique so I don't want to spoil it by someone who doesn't know what he's doing... Thanks for any tips!!

Interesting discussion. I do recruiting interviews for my company (esp. with university graduates) and we very often rent suites in hotels to conduct the interviews. This has something to do with practicality: we don't have offices in all the cities we're recruiting in and we need to fly there to interview candidates, so we need a hotel room anyways. And we can't interview in a lobby or restaurant because it's loud, it's not a confidential space and the candidate could claim that he couldn't concentrate (eg, on solving a case study) because of the disturbing environment. A suite usually has a door to the bedroom which can be closed and then a dining-room/living-room type of room with table and chairs where we conduct the interviews. I've interviewed both men and women and it has never been an issue. By the way- in the US as one of the more sensitive recruiting markets when it comes to these topics, first round interviews in hotel suites are total standard.

Six Senses Zighy Bay is amazing, but I would suggest to go there for 2 days as 1 day is rather short with the drive. Qasr al Sarab is really fun, as is Al Maha (though the latter is very pricey). Desert Islands (Sir Bany Yas Island) is also very cool, esp. with the boat ride there, but it's a bit far. The new St. Regis Saadiyat Island is very nice, have been there recently for 1 night and it's perfect for that. Check for some GCC resident specials, they are usually really good (eg the Chedi or the Shangri La Bar Al Jissa Resort in Oman- but again, that's a 2 day trip I'd say because of the flight). Haven't been to Banyan Tree RAK, but it's next on my list :) Enjoy!!

Update on Azores: After 6 (!) more calls which all ended with "ok, I send someone tomorrow" and noone ever showing up or calling, I'm definitely fed up. If this guy doesn't think 1500 AED is a business worth pursuing, fine. I am working and don't have time to make chasing people like him my full-time occupation. Out of the many unreliable, unprofessional services in Dubai, this is certainly up there... It's not about being charming or not even nice... it's about given a damn and doing your job instead of saying "yes yes" and then not showing up or even bothering to call and reschedule. Can definitely not recommend Azores unless you have nothing else to do and are willing wait for your home furnishings forever.

@Sue R- as said, not sure about non-corporate prices, but I would guess it's around 100 AED per trip or maybe hour, roundtrip to Abu Dhabi incl. some waiting hrs around 800 AED. You could maybe arrange for a fixed price if you use them say every work day of the month or so...

Our company uses some chauffeur services, you could try those, but I don't know their standard prices since we have a corporate account with them... Arshad Transportation 050-9484814 - very friendly and reliable drivers, specify which car you need (sedan vs. bigger cars, they use eg Prado). Top Luxury 04-2858880- drivers are a bit hit and miss in terms of driving style, but overall very reliable. For both companies you should tell them when you book where you want to go, if you want them to wait for you or whether they should come back at a certain time to pick you up etc. They try to find out beforehand how to get to your location (if it's non-standard like a hotel or so) but it also always helps to have a google map printed just in case (esp. the first time if you plan on using them regularly to go to the same place).

Wanted to share my really disappointing experience with Azores Furniture Co. on Al Hudheiba Rd in Satwa (opp. Al Maya supermarket). Went there last Saturday to have my outdoor cushions redone. Didn't know them but passed by the store, went in and they had some nice outdoor fabric I liked for a reasonable price (9 cushions for couch incl. filling for around 1300 AED). Double-checked the price with other stores that had the same fabric book and everyone was within this price range but some charged significantly more for the filling, so went back to Azores to place my order. The guy was nice and friendly though not at all in a haggling mood but since they were the cheapest anyways, I didn't bother. I left the measurements with them, but they insisted that they wanted to come to our place and pick up the cushions I have in and then produce copies because they said that sometimes the measurements clients give them are not really accurate. That sounded good and they wanted to pick up and deliver everything without extra charge so I agreed. They told me that they would contact me Sunday or Monday for the pickup. And- nothing happened for a week! Yesterday I called them to find out what's going on. After multiple attempts, I get through and the guy on the phone tells me after 5 seconds when I started to introduce who I am and why I'm calling that he's busy and has customers in the store and can't talk. I told him my question is really short and if he could just let me finish my sentence. But after I start "so far noone has contacted me about the pickup of my cushions" he interrupts me and says "sorry, I'm busy, I will call you later", takes down my number and hangs up. No answer, no reply, no acknowledgment that he understood my complaint (English is good, so no issue there). And of course- he again didn't call for the entire day. I'm fed up now and will chose another place from the ones I visited for comparison, even if they're a bit more pricey, at least I hope they actually care about my business and do their job rather than just ignoring me. :(

@BBCB- you're right about the morale. But after 2 hrs (!) of arguing and him threatening to sue me pro rata for rent if we don't hand back the keys immediately, I just figured that going to the rents committee is easier. Also, the flat is in really excellent condition but it's obviously not new. Law 26/2007 stipulates that "Tenant shall be obliged, upon expiry of tenancy, to return the premises to landlord in the same condition as handed over to him at the time of contracting [u'>except shortages resulting from normal use [/u'>or for reasons beyond his control." Now the question is what is meant by normal use, but I'm pretty convinced that having a few pictures and mirrors on the wall falls within that range. All the holes were filled and painted so I don't really see what else I could do. I do not feel obliged to put the flat in a "selling" condition which is what he now wants me to do in order to avoid himself having to do so on his own expense.

I just checked the DMRC website: Are these fees for real? I mean, 3.5% of annual rent is HORRENDOUS :s [b'>DMRC Fees & Documents[/b'> Plaintiff to pay 3.5% of annual rent with a minimum of AED 350 and a maximum ceiling of AED 20,000 Other fees may be levied by DMRC on plaintiff for summoning experts, payment of expert’s fee, fee for deposit of rent with DMRC etc You may have to separately pay for a newspaper advertisement in a local newspaper, in case the defendant fails to show up for a committee hearing.

Thanks ladies!! I couldn't take pictures- wanted to do it today but he didn't show up/doesn't want to let me in the flat anymore. But I have receipts from maid, handiman (jimwillfixit - so a reputable company, no cheap guy from the street) and have logs of all emails, sms and calls. I only wait for him to name his price tonight (which I'm convinced will be ridiculous) and will then file the complaint. @Phoebecat7- thanks for the offer ;-) And I'm sorry you had to go through this as well. It's such a waste of time and energy, really! @ Clairehdp- yes, will do. I also love his logic: "I have 20M AED worth of properties in Dubai, this one is 2M AED - so why do you quivel over 6000 AED with me? Give me a break." -- :\:

Update: I got a longer lunch break from my employer to come for the inspection at 12pm. Tried calling the landlord, SMS, email ever since 8.15am this morning- no reaction. I showed up at 12pm. Noone there. He calls me later, declaring that "I don't want you to be there at the inspection because I bring a painter and I don't want you to snoop around and interfere". When I started saying that I thought there was an agreement" he explodes "why are you so keen on these petty 6000 AED anyways? I will do the inspection, I don't want you there, and I will call you in the evening to inform you about how much you need to pay". This is SO going to the rents committee....!!

Thanks Phoebecat7, that's very helpful! So there might be light at the end of the tunnel... will check with the municipality tomorrow morning. It's really such a shame- we took good care of the flat, had a lot of repairs done which actually enhanced the value of the property, and now at the end the guy tries to screw us over because he's eager to sell the flat and the new prospective owner knows how to exploit that... It's really disappointing.

Ladies, I need some urgent advise on a very ugly landlord issue - hope someone can help us. We were supposed to hand over our flat today. Lived in it for a year, it's really in a very very good condition. We had a professional company do touch ups (filling holes, painting etc). Landlord showed up today to the handover together with a real estate agent AND the prospective BUYER of the flat! Landlord was happy with the flat, its condition etc. Then real estate agent walked around and constantly asked hte new buyer "are you happy with this? Shouldn't they repaint?" etc. Had landlord showed up alone (as it hte normal procedure for any flat I've had in Dubai so far), we would've been done in 10 minutes. But the new prospective owner was like "yeah, would be great if they could paint it" etc. So what ended up happening is that our landlord said "well, for me it is ok, but I think maybe there are some snags in the walls and I gave it to you in a new condition so you have to return it new". So essentially he refused to give us back the deposit because the NEW PROSPECTIVE owner wants it painted although he himself thought the flat was ok (he's desparately trying to sell the flat). We had a 2 hr discussion about this and in the end were forced to turn over the keys without getting back the deposit because he threatened significantly. He wants to go back to the flat tomorrow, assess "the snags" (really, there are none visible!) and then give us a quote for how much he thinks is needed to put it in an acceptable condition. I don't know what to do. I can't be there tomorrow for the new inspection because I need to work but I'm obviously afraid the guy will come up with a ridiculous amount or refuse to give us back the deposit in order to appease the prospective buyer of the flat. Any advise?? Thanks so much!!!

Isn't there also a tax issue to be considered? In other European countries, I know that a property in your home country which is not let out can be considered as home base in that country, meaning the tax authorities could argue that you technically still live in that country, meaning you could be tax liable. Heard about a few colleagues who faced that argument from the tax authorities and had to prove their status as non-tax liable non-residents...

Edna.welthorpe is correct, you can't reclaim VAT on services. However, if you buy eg, your wedding dress in the UK and then bring it with you to the UAE (mind the timeframe for export for goods, not sure how many months you have...) with the correct forms filled out, then you would be able to claim back the VAT on it. Same is true for all goods that you purchased (groom's suit, wedding band etc.)...

Did Shellac at Gallina's, limited range of colors, but lasted 2 weeks absolutely immaculately and that with me working on a laptop all the time which usually means the tips in French manicure last a maximum of 2 days (if that). Not much service/ pampering/ wellness atmosphere in the salon, but very efficient. Agree however with previous posts- it's definitely quite bad for the nails as they use UV light to dry the polish and that really drys out the nails. Once you have it, you can't really remove it yourself but need to have it removed in a salon. All in all- I'd do it again for special occasions or extended events, but I find it a bit too radical for the nails to do it as a regular manicure..

I've done it for a couple of months in their studio in JLT. I liked the atmosphere (you're alone with the trainer, cool room, no other people, not much talking during exercises) and the fact that you really made progress (in terms of measuring the amount of weights you're able to do until your muscles fail). Lots of my colleagues used to do it because it requires little time (20 min is about right). What I didn't like: no cardio, no warm up phase (so in my mind, a higher risk for injuries with the weights) and no real feeling of having worked out (you honestly don't sweat). I would say if you're trying to get/stay fit, it's probably not so ideal bec there's no cardio training, it somehow requires a general fitness you already have to have. If you're looking for a short, effective way of muscle build-up/training, then it could be good. However, it's quite expensive for that.

I'm very surprised about the positive reviews of the hotel here. I love the Jumeirah properties, esp. Al Qasr and Mina Al Salam- they're tasteful, everything fits and it's pure luxury. Zabeel Saray however is such a design disaster and wanna-be nouveau riche place that I really couldn't believe it to be a Jumeirah project. Nothing fits together, the colors in the lobby are clashing but not in a positive way, there's no common design pattern. Worst is the breakfast restaurant - a cheap knock-off combination of wanna-be Versailles (mirrors) and Roman Palace with absolutely no taste at all. Vases that look as if they were bought for 2 AED in Karama on the tables clash with supermodern black and white salt and pepper combination which again don't fit the "old" theme that the restaurant is desperately trying to pull off. It's awful, I was so disappointed. I took a friend there for breakfast, thinking it would be like the other Jumeirah properties and I was so embarassed when we walked in... The pool area/ outside terrace looks nice, but inside the cobalt blue lights in the hallway which don't accentuate anything but just add to the confused style and esp. the faked fresco painting on top of the stairs just look pitiful. Can't fault the service, as always with Jumeirah, and I'm very much looking forward to the opening of the new Vietnamese-French colonial restaurant which sounds great from a cuisine-perspective. But in terms of design, colors, attention to detail in its presentation this hotel is absolutely at the bottom of the 5-stars in Dubai.

They're fantastic, I'm very pleased with our hifi rack/cupboard, a kitchen counter and the touch up/repair of some antique furniture. Reliable, fast and very profesional.

Jumeirah Carpentry is amazing, we had a kitchen counter and a hifi rack custom-made, everything went smooth and easy. They're very professional, come around to take measures and discuss your ideas. I would recommend also to invest the time and go to their showroom in Al Quoz to check out the samples of woods to decide which one to take. I also used them to repair some antique furniture I have and they did a very good job in doing it up. Jumeirah Carpentry Mr. Aslam 050-6527994 maslam01@eim.ae 04-3383231, 04-3451456
