It will be way too hot - even if there were shaded areas, and they're isnt really. Not even in the baby pool. I think we're now past the time of year when babies are comfortable outside. edited by DesertRose1958 on 12/05/2012

I would be feeling like you and I know for a fact I wouldnt have let it go - for the simple reason that when it comes to people queue jumping I am an absolute witch. My sister in law once said to me after one of my moments - I was truly expecting your head to turn 360 degrees on your shoulders. I dont give a hoot about cultural differences either - I'm too big to go un-noticed in a queue and if you dare go in front of me - you had better look out. Oh and if you go in front of someone else - you wont escape my venom either. Today I was accused of being a queue jumper, not that it was said outright, but the tone of the persons voice let it be known thats what he was thinking and I was really hurt that someone would think I'd queue jump. I had mistaken thought a little girl was part of a family that was in front of me cos she kept on leaving the queue and coming back, she didnt even have anything in her hand - cos dad was standing to the side with the jeans he was wanting to pay for. She was keeping his place inline in while he had another look around. So I went to the check out and the next thing I hear is - excuse me she was before you. I was mortified because the tone of his voice was not nice and I really was innocent, anyway all I could mutter in my defence was oh I thought she was part of that other family and I then went on to say in a smiley voice something like - dont you know the British invented queueing :D I felt half daft. And your story reminds me of a time a man lied through his teeth to me that he'd been sitting in the same seats at a magic show from the start of the show. I told him no you weren't - it then became like a pantomime till I bent down and pulled out our tickets from where I'd hidden them in the frame of the chair. The look on his face said it all - how dare you prove me to be a liar in front of people. Yep how bliddy dare me in deed.

I'd do it if I had to; it wouldn't be fun or particularly pleasant but I'd do it. We were always out and about as children growing up in the Middle East regardless of the heat. I've lived to tell the tale (from my air-conditioned living room). It sometimes takes my car that long to cool down at pick-up if we get stuck in traffic. And it'll make the school run in the cooler months so much better. Your children will skip to school then! quote'> You lot were hard core Simone :D

No I wouldnt do it and wouldnt want anyone I know doing it either. Years and years ago here in Oman kids would finish school for the summer at the end of april or first week of May, older kids would be finished a few weeks later. They did do a 5 and half day week though. When I'm on the school run with my grandchildren I wish they could have those days back because even in a car with the ac running I believe that come certain times of the year not even mad dogs and englishman should be out and about doing anything during extreme temps. My grandson has been unwell and off school for two days now and my first thought was - ah no school run for him, good.

Or it comes in a small tub with a very gaily coloured eastern looking label. Oh and I was also thinking curry leaves might be the culprit but I like the smell of them and they really dont linger that long odour wise.

And yes, it does have medicinal qualities - a smelling salt substitute must be one of them. :) lol DR I was reading about this spice earlier and it can also be used as an outdoor snake repellent :) :) I've been googling it as well and its commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine which and old Sri Lankan maid of mine used to swear by. http://www.joyfulbelly.com/Ayurveda/ingredient/Hing/38

Anon, I think you really like Indian food? and if you ask your regular curry-shop, you'll find it is probably in most of your dishes. The powder is used in a lot of Indian cooking, and doesn't smell that bad at all. You only use a tiny amount though. ;) That is interesting to know. If that is the case then, it surely can't smell that bad! The smell and flavour change when its cooked, it really mellows out, but the original smell still hangs around. And you do just use a tiny amount but even taking the lid of the small pot it comes in can leave a lingering aroma. And yes, it does have medicinal qualities - a smelling salt substitute must be one of them. :) edited by DesertRose1958 on 05/05/2012 edited by DesertRose1958 on 05/05/2012

If the lady is Indian or Sri Lankan I'm wondering if its Asafoetida/Hing thats she's using, because if it is then nothing will get rid of the smell of it, its just something that people who use it to cook with, live with. Its awful, truly awful, but I dont mean that in an offensive way at all. I recall a few years ago someone here broke a small tub of it in the supermarket and the shop had to be closed for a week because of it. Wikipedia says its also known as devils dung and stinking gum. Or if she is from the Phillipines then there's one sauce they use thats made of dried shrimps, I think, and that is also awful if you're not used to it.

I thought it was just me who didnt do cards except for my children and grandchildren because I begrudge the money for them so much. So yes alismum, a cake and a phone card is great and I had thought of a 30dhm phone card to allow for the price of the birthday card. So no birthday card and a 50dhms phone card is great.

Loube, try zappos, they do wide shoes and wide wide shoes in all different sizes. I'm really wanting to go to have a pair made as well - for once a pair of shoes that are just what I want. I'm quite fancying a slingback with a little heel, not a kitten heel, just a little heel - oh and scooped out down at the start of the toes. What is it they call it - toe cleavage. :D I dont really wear high heels so I'm not hankering after a pair - just classy sexy mid heeled sling backs with toe cleavage.

awesome ladies, I will try them, and thanks for links. So, do these green mangos that seem so incredibly popular as they are...do they ripen into what I would think was a 'proper' mango, or is this the best time to harvest and use? Oh yes - they ripen into the most fantastic mangos and I'll only eat green mango if it doesnt come from the mango trees in my garden. :D Leave them where they are!!!!!!! :) ps - they will probably grow to be those fantastic pakistani mangos. edited by DesertRose1958 on 18/04/2012

Me, in fact it goes between a size 11 or 12ww depending on the make of the shoe. I order from Zappos or Designershoes.com in the States and never ever ever have a problem with getting the shoes. I just have them sent to my shop and ship address. And the great thing is that with Zappos they have a 365 day return policy so anything that doesnt fit I just keep till a friend is going to the states and she returns them for me. However, I believe there is a place in dubai that will make shoes for a person and their facebook page indicates they're resonably priced. I'm going to visit them soon because I really do want a pair of shoes that I love rather than shoes that I bought because they're nice. For the life of me though I cant recall the name of the company.

Having seen some of the most 'disaster waiting to happen' things in hospital carparks over the last 6 months, quite aside from spitting and the like, that just doesnt surprise me in the least. As for, do they sometimes spit because you are a woman? I feel that sometimes, yes they do. You can generally get an impression of malice and deliberation...eye contact, a smirk. Just the other day a checkout lady (and I am aware of how silly/petty this sounds) made me move the entire load of grocerys (one handed) up the converyor belt manually, then looked me in the eye after I had paid and used the conveyor belt for the local behind me in the que. They had a jolly good laugh at my expense, and left me just staggered really. There are very clever ways to make a person feel unwelcome/unwanted, or to thumb a nose at your supposed prosperity, but I am unsure what benefit they really achieve with it. that saddens me because I know where you are now living. But saying that I experienced something similair a few weeks back. I was in C4 and asked for a whole lamb to be cut up. I was told to go back in half an hour but I went back 20 minutes later only to see the bloke drop 3 peices of the meat on the floor - then pick them up and put them back on the bundle. I stood there thinking would it be really precious to say something or should I just keep an eye on the bag they are going in and wash it when I get home. I decided on the latter until the Egyptian guy brought me the meat and smirked when he saw who it was for. I was gobsmacked and asked him - which bag did the meat go in and he said - no understand I get manager. I wanted to laugh at that stage. The meat manager was called and I told him what happened - went as far as saying that I no longer knew what bag the meat was in. He was shaking with rage and offered more meat. I just said no and left. Then another time I had a monthly shop - about 4 trollys and the packer went and spoke to a couple he knew. I couldnt pack it all on my own and one of the security guards came to help. I tuened round and caught site of the packer and his friends sniggering and laughing. Well he laughed on the other side of his face when I walked away and left the lot - about 500 rials of shopping. The security guy said please dont do it, and the checkout guy was ready to go for the original packer because the whole shop had to be undone and put back on the shelf. My money was still in my purse. Sadly these things happen nowadays and I really do think its an indication of how people feel about a the likes of Iraq. Its human nature, not nice human nature, and I dont believe for a minute it doesnt happen everywhere in the world. Next time though try and stand up for yourself a bit - they will be ashamed. Oh and yes - I think some people do deliberately gochle at people just like spongemonkey described. I'm sorry it happened to you, I really am. xxxxxxx

My point is, it has never officially been told to me (or any crew I have ever worked with) to do this. Of course there's probably one or two that decide to do it because they want to (as there is in any job) but it is not an official, recognised procedure in the crew world. Hope this clears it up. Having the cabin hot doesn't actually make less work, as I have said- people *may* fall asleep but they tend to wake up a lot more as they get hot , want water/drinks, walk around more and then of course there's a lot more chance they will faint- thus causing a lot more work for the crew. So, anyone doing this to 'put their feet up' is frankly crazy... ;) DR, there is a difference between a crew making this comment to you (whether as a joke or not- many of them have 'attitude' and it being something crew are *taught* to do, that is what I was trying to say. edited by SkyKitty on 15/04/2012 Fear not Skykitty - I'm away for a lie down. :) xxxxx eta - I didnt even ask my children about it becaue I'm usually to busy asking them things like - if I stand up to go to the loo will the plane plummet and couple of thousand feet. And has anyone ever been sucked down the loo during turbulence. edited by DesertRose1958 on 15/04/2012

I hope you don't think I'm having a dig at you. My point was if the cabin temp is set high to make the passengers sleepy then surely it must have the same effect on the crew, which is possibly counter-productive. Sandy - not unles they want them to have a sleep as well. Maybe thats why it was done. Get the passengers asleep and the crew can put their feet up. The point I'm trying to make is - why the need for such an answer from a crew member if its not true? Or is it ok for them to be flippant because a million people, not on the same flight I presume, have previously asked before? I dont expect to be taken the pee out of because someone felt like it on a day. If someone is polite and as self suffucient on a flight as they can possibly be and all the while remembering they have family doing the same kind of job as the person they are talking to - why they need for flippancy from a crew member. If someone is polite to you - why not automatically be polite in return? Oh and my lot dont fly with Emirates - just to clear that up :) And skykitty - I'm sorry but the fact you've never been told this by anyone doesnt take away from the fact that I was. edited by DesertRose1958 on 15/04/2012

Why is the cabin in Emirates so hot? After asking 5 times on a 17 hr flight, I gave up. Hot makes the passengers sleepy. And the cabin crew? Them as well Sandy. I asked on a flight why it was so hot in the cabin and was told by the steward - the captain has whacked the temp up so you can all have a nice sleep. Now if this wasnt true then why say it in answer to someone asking an innocent question? With a son and son in law who are pilots and a daughter in law who's CC, a son who's an engineer, and a daughter who was also in the airline industry- I'm not someone who takes a pop at airlines or their staff just for the sake of it. I passed on to CA the answer I was given by a crew member. I cant help it if people dont like what I was told. edited by DesertRose1958 on 15/04/2012

Anyway after one particular instance that involved a cream linen jacked I slowly dropped her from my life. I know now that I hadnt really liked he because she went through life sucking up to who she thought were the right people (not that we ever were), but the day I heard she'd gone to a senior officers wife with Chappatis so she didnt have to make them herself (pmsl) I just thought to myself - I'm out of here. And yes I know how daft that all sounds.

The Birdseye brand is so expensive here.\ If I do my shop in C4 I buy their own brand, they're as nice as Birdseye, just a little bit more fishy tasting. Does it really matter if someone did mean can they catch Alzheimers from someone else? We get asked this about my sons conditions often. To us all it means is that the person perhaps comes from a culture where certains things are still misunderstood, perhaps a bit scary because they involved the brain and a particular school of thought at times, and perhaps they are quite simply not aware because the situation isnt often come across for various reasons.

I would just say no, the same way I've said no to my daughters when it came to sleeping over at someone house. Its the way I was brought up and its still culturally relevent here - if you have your own 'home' then why do you need to sleep somewhere else unless you're on a holiday or away for a break. But that's just it: She is NOT your daughter, she is your employee and an independent adult. Your house is not her home, it's her living arrangement that comes with the job. I would think that on their day and night of, any maid would maybe enjoy not being arounfpd the house and family. They need a break every week, just a we happily close the door to our offices on a Thursday night. To the OP: make sure she knows what she can and cannot do, explain the rules, regulations and consequences in this country and ask to meet the aunty, if only to ease your mind. Oopsadaisy, you're right, my maids are not my daughters - but they are someones daughters and because of that they'll be looked after by me the way my daughters are. I've been entrusted with their care by their family and I wont be letting anyone down. The same way I would expect my daughters to be looked after by others if they ever ended up living in someone elses house. But that aside there's also the what if associated with this and I'll never put me or mine in a position where I had to say to a please officer - she was allowed to stay out at the weekend. My lot close their own doors when they go to bed everynight just the way we do, they dont share rooms with each other or bathrooms, they have a very nice rooms in the garden with their own patio and wee bit of garden, they have total privacy, they have every friday off, the eat what the want and there are no off limits in the kitchen, they have whatever TV package they want, the house is there's including the pool and garden, friends are free to come and go in the afternoon or evening, - but no sleepovers. It works for all of us, my longest serving employee has been with us for almost 24 years now but he does live round the corner from us with his wife and children who we brought from Bangladesh to join him. And until recently the least amount of time a person had spent with us was 9 years. Oh and I'm never on here complaining about maids, I dont complain to other people either because the reality is we're all very happy and none of us really have anything to complain about. Oh and one of the maids is the same age as my eldest daughter and the second one is a few years older then my youngest girl. A previous maid was in her 40's and she didnt get to sleep out either, and she was OK with that because as she said - it wasnt allowed at home. And I have to disagree with you about my home not being their home - it is. Or at least thats what they tell me and its why one is coming from leave 3 weeks early next week - she wants to come home. eta - I think that what we have to remember is that most of these women come from conservative backgrounds where they would be expected to be in their own bed at nights. edited by DesertRose1958 on 10/04/2012

Its the way I was brought up and its still culturally relevent here - if you have your own 'home' then why do you need to sleep somewhere else unless you're on a holiday or away for a break. That aside, these ladies are at risk of being taken advantage of, or finding themselves pregnant when they really did believe someone loved them, they are also capable of taking advantage of others to try improve their lifestyle - but sometimes it can backfire on them. Anyone who's been in an orphanage in this part of the world will have seen that mixed race babies make up most of the children there/. Granted someone can get up to things anytime they're out but why put yourself in a position where you may have to answer - why was this lady not sleeping at home. I recently interviewed someone and the first question she asked was can I sleep at my aunties on a thursday night - the interview was over there and then. If you're staff have good working conditions, good rest time, and time off every week, then there's no need for them to be sleeping out.

I dont understand where your maid is - Indonesia or Dubai? Her whereabouts though dont really matter because what you need to do now is move on from her emotionally and legally. What she did stinks and it really is better for you that she is out of your life and stays out. There are ways to do things and what she did is most certainly not the way. The fact you were going to double her salary is neither here nor there because she obviously doesnt class her job with you as a good job. I think I'd be telling her to burger off and find one if my conscience was clear and I knew she'd been treated well and had a decent salary whilst with me. edited by DesertRose1958 on 06/04/2012

Erme - Kaba is the original poster on this thread, AQ was offering advice. That is true. I bet she did not realize how many would have the same problem as her, ey? I'm not even beginning to go into detail here as I know my parenting has been bad and I don't need to be told so again by people who don't know me. Simple I still wonder if I'd got the hang of parenting when number 4 was growing up, or if she was just one of those kids who grew up relatively unscathed by growing up. It really did take me a long time to get the hang of it when they were older and I made loads of mistakes, loads. My eldest 3 grew up running into brick walls just for the fun of it, if there was a hard way to do things, or a mistake to be made, they did it - though not all to the same extent. I more than likely had a hand in some of it because I was much better with young children than older ones, and I think it was to do with getting married at 18 and not having a typical teenagers life myself. Thankfully they all grew up to be lovely people and have very responsible jobs and I think its their niceness and how grounded they are that I'm most proud of today. Dont beat yourself up regarding your parenting - you more then likely have been a lot better at it than you think. edited by DesertRose1958 on 06/04/2012

Thanks girls :) I actually hesitated to write about 'that shop' but it really is sticking in my craw and I think I might write to the owner if I can find out who he or she is. Is there a way to say polite way to tell an owner that 2 of his/her shop assistants (though one was way worse than the other) are racists who decide as soon as a person walks in the door if they are worth bothering with or not. Then there is the way one of them in particular had 'that look' down to perfection. You know the one where you're looked up and down by someone and they strike a particular pose with their nose and eyebrows when they are doing it. Its like a sneer and you're being dismissed even before you've opened your mouth to speak. Ah well - I imagine Green would suit them perfectly because I think thats whats at the bottom of it all.
