I dont know if this is allowed or not but here's a link to a company in the UK selling high quality BeanBags. Its owned by my friend and her husband. There is also a sister site called Wow Beanbags. The goods are of an extremely high quality and the business is very much a family based one. Jill still does a lot of the maching herself, as well as model :) the products. They dont ship overseas but bringing the items by the like of aramex shop and ship is very reasonable. Anyway have a look at 'beautiful beanbags uk'

I think my daughter must be a saint to have approached my grannyhood the way she did. However I think it would be really cruel to want to be a fly on the wall when some of the posters here come crashing down to earth with a healthy dose of reality once motherhood strikes. I think its safe to say granny would be more than welcome and there would be plenty of space in the garage for her broomstick.

Sugarbeach, when I read your first post there was a picture in my mind of a mum taking a spoonful of med into the living room for her child so I'm wondering if something about what your MIL witnessed perhaps made her feel uncomfortable. Was she a 'good' mum, did she do things like this for your husband as a child? Was she a needy mum who tried to see off all girlfriends because she wanted to be the number one woman in her sons life? Is she a caring wife or did you giving your husband medicine make her think about her shortcomings? Are you a reminder to her of what she isnt to others. However, regardless of all of that, the only way to deal with her his to change your way of dealing with her because I dont think the lady will change. Kill her with kindness so to speak and just rise above her digs. You may think you'll despise yourself for doing it - but you wont. It will empower you.

Gatta my sil and my daughters maid have recently undergone chemotherapy (and radiation treatment) but I cant really say if their skin has suffered scarring as a result if the treatment. But I'm thinking that maybe Creme De La Mer could be of help to them - if you google it you'll get an idea if its the kind of thing you're after. Regardless of whether it does actually help tho, it could just be that a person using a nice cream and pampering themself will make them feel better about things in the long run. I wish your friend/relative well. xxxxxx edited by DesertRose1958 on 30/12/2011

Sara, as myram has said - there is also royal flight school. Its very small though and places are very difficult to get. I've also tried to find the thread where I recommended TLC to someone but I cant find it. It would be worth considering though. And MQ - is a multi national community with plenty of locals living there also.

Anyone giving up a British Passport, and its not the same as renouncing your nationality, only has to get a 'certificate of entitlement' issued by the British Embassy. Its then placed in the back of your 'new country passport' and no visa is required for entry into the UK. You cannot however have a cerificate of entitlement as well as a second british passport - although this was possible until a couple of years ago. All of my children use the certificate as I will when I get my nationality very soon. You do have to apply for visas to Schengen countries but one officials from schengen countries see the cert of entitlement its just a formality you have to go through and its made easy. This explains it. http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/britishcitizenship/right-of-abode/certificate-entitlement/ edited by DesertRose1958 on 28/12/2011 edited by DesertRose1958 on 28/12/2011

Hi Sara, its very difficult to get a place in the schools here and I would suggest putting your name down now - though some of the schools have already told people if they have a place for next year or not. Prices for 3 bedroomed villas vary, even on the wave because there are different types of villas. Have a look at some of the real estate agents websites and that should give you an idea. Off the top of my head though I would say it could be around 1200 - 1400 rials monthly. We have Marks and Spencers but no Debenhams or Waitrose, but Al Fair/Spinneys do stock a few Waitrose products. This really isnt a place to be if shopping is very important to a person, however the people and the country more than make up for us having basic shops. hth :) eta - you might want to consider a townhouse on The Wave if you decide against a villa. . edited by DesertRose1958 on 28/12/2011

Oh and while I'm here... You may think access to beach/pools/gym/playground is not as serious as having your electricity cut off. Well I disagree. Why? Because I PAID for it. Me. In my yearly rental costs. I think not getting what you have PAID for is fraud. Pure and simple. If I don't pay my electricity and Dewa cut me off that's my fault and I deserve the consequences. But we came here BECAUSE of the beach access. And we have already PAID for it. I find that pretty serious. I dunno, deceit just gets me like that. As a LL I totally agree with you. Of course your LL has covered the cost of the services in your rent. And it is grossly unfair that people have found themselves in this position. But just what can be done about it, apart from moving at the first oportunity, I really dont know.

To me, after reading all the replies, it seems the only way to resolve this is for whoever is living in these apartments, be it owner or tenant, they are solely responsibible in paying the service fees. Obviously, the rents will have to drop, but at least then tenants then have the choice, don't pay you can't use the facilities. Simples! I wouldnt trust tenants to pay service charges because some tenants can be really difficult. God knows what headache you'd bring upon yourself as an owner if your tenant decided not to pay the service charges for whatever reason. Not everyone is honourable and decent as this thread has shown, and some people are just downright big moaners who'd get an owner into hot water just for the sake of wanting to have a bit between their teeth over the smallest thing. What has happened is horrible and I really dont know how it can be resolved apart from people moving out of their apartments when their contract is up. Hit the owner where it hurts - and thats in the pocket. We have a system here in Oman, our buildings are managed by Strata Global, and one week after the quartely service charges should have been paid legal proceedings commence against the owner. A letter is sent from a lawyer and people have 7 days to cough up, 7 days later another letter is sent and I think this goes on for a month - its then put in the hand of debt collectors/the law. It can become quite a costly affair as people are even charged for the letters that are sent out. ets - we also have an owners group that I wont join for the simple reason the first thing they do is ask other owners not to pay service charges whenever they are griping about something with the management company - usually very small somethings. To date though I think its no more than a handful of people who havent paid their dues and when they each received warning that legal proceedings were about to commenced they got all upset. :D Oh and admin charges to the management company take up the biggest share of the service charge - funny that eh. edited by DesertRose1958 on 24/12/2011

I bought one from Mont Blanc this week. Its lovely and exactly what you're looking for. They also do a folder that has an A4 size writing pad in it. With the latter you could also slip a few pages of notes in as well.

My daughter is about to vacate one early on in january. It has 3 bedrooms upstairs and a study just to the left of the front door when you enter. There is a sitting room, a kitchen diner, then another sitting room off the kitchen diner. I think its sitting room but it could be another bedroom, albeit a big room, as it has an ensuite. She uses it as the childrens playroom. Its in a nice street and is on the Island. It also has a really nice garden, is a few doors along from the park and within walking distance of the beach. They're only moving because they're going to their own house.

You're 51 and at this age it really is a question of do you take a chance on things working out ok, or do you make a move before you're too old to 10 years from now if things go wrong again? You'll do what you want to in the end and if that means staying dont feel ashamed because no one understands the dynamics fo what goes on in a marriage and leaving isnt always the answer.

My son who's 20 years old doesnt have ADD but he's severly autistic, has tourettes syndrome,as well as an underlying psychiatric condition that has caused him immeasurable pain and anguish this last 18 months. He isnt on Concerta but he is on Lithium and Haliperidol as well as an anti depressant. The first drugs I've mention can cause side effects that are absolultely horrendous. One of them can be fatal and his blood has to be tested every month but there is no doub at all that my son needs the medication. Quite simply they've been the making of him and his life has now gone back to what is was 18 moths ago - in fact he now has a better quality of life than he's had for years. In hindsight we should have had him on medication a good year before he was ever put on it, this isnt the first meds he's been on, but I was scared about side effects. I was also under the mistaken impression that if I put him on medicaton I was a failure as a mother. I dont know what it is that makes us mums of special needs children think that we can do it all and sort everything when the truth is that we cant. All the scientists in the world cant get to the bottom of the mysteries of the brain so why do we think we should be able to. As for side effects - having ADD, as wll as other things, and leaving them untreated can cause worse problems than possible side effects of the meds.

I'm only starting mine tomorrow. Well that is for the adults in then family. My grandchildrens presents have been sorted for quite some time now. We're giving up on each person buying a present for everyone else and this year money was put into a kitty and each adult is getting one present that they really want - even if its a home made voucher for a certain amount of money to put towards a bigger purchase. People will get stocking fillers but what prompted our new way of doing was people saying - I dont really need anything, or I would like a particular camera but its very expensive so can I just have something towards it. Its been a really easy way of doing and one that I'm enjoying. Havent made my own christmas pudding either - I bought one instead. lolol

But if it was a scam then the shop assistants would have to be in on it as well if they handed the card over to the wrong person. Also, how would the woman have known that someone with the same credit card as her was going to be in the shop at that particular time. Because surely thats what would have to happen?

Ah..it says the basis for white puddings too! Yummy.....It's like a poor man's haggis then? None of the ikky bits? Still love it!!! Two hours after arriving back in Dundee I was sitting in the Deep Sea Chipper, in their wee cafe, having a White Pudding Supper. It hadnt changed in about 30 years and was all very traditional - bread and butter and a pot of tea on the side. :D My brother and sister enjoyed it too but sisters in laws were scandalised. I went on a gastronomic tour of Dundee and surrounding areas. I havent had such a good holiday for years. It beats the Seychelles hands down.

Someone further down, simone I think, mentioned the IB system being too fluid - but there is structure to the lessons and the teacher steers the lesson back to her learning objective by the end of the class. I know this because my daughter is a Brithish NC trained teacher who is now working in an IB school and I can recall her just a few months ago learning how to plan a lesson the IB way. She did IB though she went from the Oman cirriculum to IGCSE's in a space of a few months, the later was covered in a year in grade 10, she then changed to the IB system and did it in grade 11 and 12. I'm surprised her and her classmates didnt go grey overnight such was the magnitude of the changes they had to endure. I think there's a lot to be said for both systems but she prefers IB on a personal level. She's glad she did it.

in a shop Metness? if so it must be a proper business surely? He tried them on in the toilet in IB. This is why I am so upset as well. I am unsure what was going on in his mind to be honest. How do two complete strangers convince someone to go to the toilet to try some suits & make you pay them AED 5000 (all during your lunch break!). Maybe George Michael could answer that one :D I think GM would have asked the guys to come in and help try the suits :) I hope you're feeling a bit better now :) Its always so blooming disappointing to see just how much of a numpty a husband can be. It reminds me of a time my husband came home and said he'd seen a bloke walking down the road so he'd stopped and given him a lift. He then invited the bloke for a cuppa because he got it into his head the bloke was some kind of child psychologist - we were needing one for our youngest. Anyway the guy comes the next day and 2 minutes later I'd managed to find out he was an encyclopedia salesman. :D

Ist Maid stayed for 9 years. We then had a temporary one for 6 months. Our next one stayed for 5 years. The one we have now has been with us for 2 and will come back after her holiday. We also have another one that we've had for 2 months and I cant see her wanting to leave anytime soon because she's happy with us and we're happy with her. Our General Manager :D who started out with us as a caretaker from another building who'd come and water the garden for me has now been with us for 23 years and shows no sign of wanting to go home - and neither would we want him to. He's well settled here and has his family with him because it just seemed the right thing to do for someone who's been at my familys side for years. Oh and there was another maid who I employed from the embassy, stupid ****** that I was - she lasted a few weeks for the simple fact she did something and tried to detract from it by saying our general manager had been seen in my sons wallet. She was out the country within hours.

Can someone tell me what school is closet to The Wave complex? Thanks. I dont know what class you'd be looking for a place in but TLC is closest to The Wave. Its a very new school but one that I think would be worth a look if only because I know one of the teachers and she is excellent at what she does. I've also seen the children out and about and they seem a lovely lot. Keep in mind that the school currently has a very small amount of pupils. The British School and ABA are very close to each other, about 5 mins apart. The Royal Flight School is opposite the airport and the second closest to the wave.

Hi At the moment we are in a limbo as unless we find out where my son will eventually get a place it will be rather hard to choose where to live as the traffic in Muscat is horrid and you can easily spend one and a half hour stuck during school runs. I wish you the best of luck and may see u in muscat! Myriam, the new superhighway opened a while back and traffic isnt bad at all now. The days of an hour and half stuck in trafic jams are long gone. The school run from the Wave to ABA takes 35 minutes if you go across the road to city centre, down to the airport and then along the new super highway to ABA. It would be another 5 mins to The British School. You would leave home at 6.30 at the latest. From Azaiba or Ghubrah you can pick the superhighway up by going across to Bausher. The return journey is quicker by about 5-7 mins. I would say you could safely live as far out as the wave, not that it is far out in real terms, and get your son to school with ease traffic wise in the morning.

Its a myth that people who are overweight spend all their time scoffing junk/fast food. It was something I never touched. I dont go along with it being down to ignorance of nutrition or lack of motivation either. Some of the overweight people I knew, inculding myself, knew as much about nutrition as a nutritionist does. MY problem arose from eating large quantites of very healthy food. It was never about the quality of what was going in my gob. It was always the quantity. As for lack of motivation - I think its more pertinent to find out what is causing the apparent lack of motivation. People are overweight for a whole host of reasons. Stereotyping doesnt help. So is there a possibility that it is genetic? I dont know the answer to that tho recent studies have shown there is a gene that causes people to be more prone to being overweight than others. I'm not really good at understand things like that tho. People do say that being overweight runs in families but I think its because eating/cooking habits can be passed down through families and if parents are overweight there is more chance the children will be from an early age. But then there are those who are overweight because of what goes on in their heart and their head and I think this is where the people go wrong when they say if a person really does want to lose weight they will. Its not always that easy and its why professionals really do have to treat the person as a whole person and not just as someone who's eaten too many pies and needs to stop.

Thanks everyone. Hmmm. it doesn't sound too promising. I thought I had heard about school place problems there. It might only be a short term posting so might be best if my hubby commutes and DD and I stay put for now. My hubby is in the Oil Industry. What are the compound names that they are in? OIl workers can live at PDO if they are employed by them. I'm not sure about sub-contractors. But I would put money on there being more oil workers living out of PDO than there is in - its a huge company and they cant accomodate everyone. When replying to you I did think - this lady should stay put in dubai if she can.

so talk to him. starting the conversation doesn't mean that you lost the fight.. Agree! I suppose I ought to but I am tired of always being the first one to initiate reconciliation which I did once already on the first day and I wonder if this is what will happen forever if we fight. By being the one to always initiate reconcilliation you've laid down the blue print as to how he behaves after an arguement - he gives you the cold shoulder treatment because he can. I think talking wont do much good unless its to say - this behaviour has to change, we have to find another way of moving on from arguements because this way is stopping now. It will mean you not initiating reconcilliation, but even saying we can talk when you are ready to is letting him know you're not gving him a get stuffed message.

There's two other schools to consider - ABA and TAISM. ABA does the IB and I'm not sure about TAISM. Have a look on their websites and see whats what. And I dont want to sound like a party pooper but I think its realistic to say that places dont come easy in any of the schools. If you dont drive here you'll find life very difficult and the only place you could live and realistically cycle to the shops is Medinat Qaboos or the Wave, however the latter only has a smallish supermarket but is Al Fair. There is also a Dr's in MQ. Its called medident and DR Mustafa, a UK trained GP, is wonderful. As for cycling about outside of MQ or the Wave, and even that wouldnt be for the feint hearted - ye gods no. As for driving - over the last few years it has deteriorted dreadfully and is a major worry if you've lived here long enough to know just how its deteriorated. It wasnt always like this. :( I honestly dont know how you'll manage here because places are well spread out and there is no public transport as such to speak of. edited by DesertRose1958 on 30/11/2011

Why should you have to trust the teacher to determine who can eat what? It is not the teachers job to help your child celebrate. It is your job as mum to help your child celebrate - don't pass it off to someone else who doesn't get paid for distribution, supervision and clean up of whatever you feel you need to send in. It is insulting to the teacher and all teachers moan in the staffroom when it is done. Albertina - are you a teacher or an LSA?

I've always thought it was something that couldnt be helped at 37,000 feet due to your innards getting all squashed up and things just having to fight for more space, in a very confined space, with the obvious results. Not that I would know personally of course cos Im a lady. But having read this thread I really do wish I'd pinned a note to myself the other day en-route to london that said something along the lines of - It wasnt me, honest, it really was him across the aisle. Try the, 'muscat buy and sell' page on facebook, as well as the offical opera house page on facebook, though Im not sure tickets are allowed to be re-sold the latter. I know Im repeating myself and people may be fed up of hearing it but :) The only way to ensure tickets for anything is to buy ahead for the entire season the day the tickets go on sale. Dont listen to people saying oh, there's no need to be buying 2/3 months ahead etc because the reality is that within days of going on sale most things are sold out and whats available thereafter isnt available for long. Also by buying for the season you get substantial discounts which can mean up to a third off your total bill for the season. It really is a fantastic night out and I hope you get your tickets. I would help if I could but I dont have any spare. And if you do manage to get here :) its become obvious as the performances have gone by that people are getting into the spirit of things and really dressing up for the night is the way to go. HTH :) I've MISSED you, where have you been? xxx PS: look out for me in your local C4 next month...I'll be the fish out of water looking one :) Hi :), I've been thinking of you and wondering if you are here yet. Things have been hectic at home for months now due to my boy not doing too well at all - his list of problems just keep on growing. But never mind cos it will all work out well in the end :) I wont look out for you in Carrefour cos I'd like to have you to the house when you get here :) I'm away in a couple of hours for a fortnight but as soon as I get back I'll be in touch. In the meantime I hope your move goes smoothly and that I can help you to settle in. xxxxxxxxxx

HTH :)

You should be able to find jars or packets of dried lime powder in the spice aisle of any store. Its balck in colour. You can also make it yourself by buying dried loomies and puting them through a spice grinder.

I'm dreading having my cataracts done cos I just know I'm going to look in the mirror a few days later and realise I do look every one, and probably more, of my 54 years.

And just be aware that those dead sea snakes you find washed up on the beach could just be in a very deep slumber and will react, quite rightly, to being prodded and poked by the curious who mistake them for being dead. I speak from experience having seen my son miss kicking his football and try to score a goal with a slumbering sea snake instead. edited by DesertRose1958 on 05/11/2011

Another thing to bear in mind is that the Royal Operal House is now open, too. So, hotels near the Opera House, such as the InterContinental, the Crowne Plaza may get booked up prior to concerts, ballets etc. Apparently, Andrea Bocelli's concert at the Opera House last night was so popular that tickets sold out on the web site and never made it on to general distribution. Spot on regarding the hotels and not just because people connected with the Concerts etc are staying in them so people really should be thinking well ahead nowadays when planning a visit. The Andrea Bocelli concert was fabulous, as was everything we've seen to date. The tickets did make it to general distribution and the secret to seeing all you want to see is to buy everything in one go the day the ticket office opens (or very soon after) at the start of each season. It also helps doing that way because you get up to a third off your total purchase if you see a certain amount of performances per month. I have to say though that even without the discounts the prices are very affordable.
