We live in 23 Marina and it is a pain but not the end of the world - adds an extra 5-10 mins onto your journey in rush hour and it will be there for a while I am sure but you get used to it! Depends if you really love the apartment (which we do) - if you can find a nice one which is easier to get in and out of then that would be better but to be honest if you are in the middle of the Marina then there is still traffic there anyway, at least ours is easy to get in and out of when not rush hour.

Probably best to go instead of waiting to be contacted - yes they definitely should contact you if you have registered but it is good to get into the habit of going every 16 weeks if you are willing to donate regularly.

Thanks all - will start tonight! I forgot to mention I do exfoliate too as have a St Ives Apricot Scrub which I love, just need to do all these good things at night as well as in the morning! I do even have a night cream (buy 2 get one free on Soap & Glory products so thought I would give it a go - but didn't) - will see how I get on!

Thanks all, I will definitely try to make the effort with an evening skincare regime! I suppose even if I am too lazy to cleanse, tone and moisturise in the evening I should at least use some baby wipes to clean everything off. OPMUM1 which moisturiser would you recommend? A Clarins one? I have recently started a Clinique one and they last forever so won't be buying for a while but good to bear in mind for when I do. Also night creams - waste of money or should they actually be used rather than using the same in the mornings and evenings?

A good option that I only spotted after I bought my little cousin a BK statue (he lives in the UK and loves the building) is a lego kit for making one, it looks great. I have seen it in Hallmark and somewhere else that I have forgotten, I would imagine you can get it in the BK gift shop also. 150 dhs - I know what I am getting him for his next bday!

with my problem with etilsat they opened an elife account in my hubs name, so i was paying mine and this false one, only realised as we never got the bills, when we did they were in arabic, so then i had to take the time to go in and sort it, they cancelled this false account, and transfered some of the money but there is still one payment that they havent sorted out..... 1 year and counting, i need to be in the right frame of mood and have the whole day to go in and "sort it out"... and its for 399dhs so not the end of the world, but its my money and i will get it back, this is not the first time this sort of the thing has happened..... but i know that i have to go into the main office in abu dhabi and....... Nightmare, it is hard to believe how on earth these problems occur! I was once given 2 'free' Du SIM cards when opening our home account which I told them I didn't need but they gave me anyway, I never even opened the boxes and they then started to charge monthly line rental on the 2 numbers! The first I knew was a year later when I was contacted by some kind of debt collector regarding the unpaid bills that I had never been sent. I get the occasional contact regarding my 'debt' and I make yet another complaint to Du and it goes away for a while. Madness.

The comapany may be trying to pul a fast one if your DH's tenure is nearing 5 years She said he has just had his first pay rise in 6 years so he has been there for longer than 5 - however good point that someone made that it may mean you effectively start again so he would have to wait for a further 5 years to get the full gratuity again, I am not sure what the legal view on that would be. There must be some reason the company is offering it, which knowing this place is unlikely to be in the interests of the employee!

A similar thing happened to us a couple of years ago - we randomly stopped receiving bills even though we had received them when we first moved in. I had been contacting them by email so had everything in writing. The account got really messed up, somehow ended up in someone else's name and goodness knows what else. We didn't pay for about 9 months because had no bills and they just kept saying they were investigating - at one point they said (by email) that we should continue to not pay until it was resolved. So we sat back and waited, putting money aside each month. The one day - in the middle of summer - I got a call from security in our building informing me that DEWA had cut us off due to unpaid bills! Unbelievable. I printed all off the email correspondence off, left work and went straight down to the head office. I actually ended up in the back office with someone quite sensible and it eventually was resolved. The whole situation was bizarre and I have no idea how it got so messed up and then wasn't able to be sorted quickly but I would advise that you go down to the head office and refuse to leave until it is resolved. yes that can happen, have and still have problems with similar issues with etilislat and its now been a year on this complaint, but thats the way it works here, you need to gather all your information and go and sit in the big boss office and sort it out, and not move until you have resolved it but just ignoring will not help Agree - I ignored it (well, stopped paying whilst trying to chase a resolution) on their advice and it didn't work out well at all, luckily I was in Dubai but if we had been on holiday when the AC was switched off in the middle of summer then we would have come back to an entire apartment full of ruined furniture and clothes, luckily it was just slightly damp!

I think that sounds like quite a personal decision depending on financial circumstances. If I were paying interest payments on debt then I would be keen to reduce them - I suppose one calculation I would be doing would be how much extra I would be likely to get if I waited and whether that would work out more than the interest payments you are making, that would be the only thing that to me would make it worthwhile waiting until he leaves his job.

I remember 'bath and hair wash' day was once a week when my sister and I were little! Probably because hair washing was so traumatic :-) I can't remember how often we used to have a bath (don't think we had a shower) but it definitely wasn't every day, probably twice a week in addition to the hair wash bath! I would like to point out that I now shower every day!

Whatever the truth it will come out, it is almost impossible these days to get away with a crime. If what the Telegraph reports was true about her having been shot 4 times but only 3 shots through the door then how would that be explained? If she was in a nightdress then she could have got changed elsewhere in the house but I guess it depends where her overnight bag was - if they can prove that she brought it with her and it wasn't there from the night before. All very strange, I want to believe it was an accident as he has always been such an inspiration up to now but who knows - the truth will come out.

They do usually check insurance, we have Oman insurance on ours but a couple of times forgot to take the documents with us - the first time they were OK as we had the insurance card (but no papers) and the second time they weren't having any of it and made us purchase insurance in the border building even though we were going to be in Oman for all of 20 seconds. I can't remember exactly but I think it cost 50 dirhams to buy it in the spot.

As far as I know it is actually illegal for firms to charge a fee to the candidates. I guess all you can do is advise your husband and if he insists that it is legit and he is willing to lose the money completely then he should pay it just to avoid argument between you. It all comes down to whether he thinks it is worth the risk. It does sound extremely weird though that this guy is using a hotmail address and working from home - even if he did have his own small business surely he would have a more professional email address, it costs next to nothing to have your own website with email addresses included. Does he even have a website? Can your husband do some further checks on him and his supposed company? I would be extremely wary as well but maybe your husband is desperate to find a job and wants to believe this man.

We used one for a hotel in the Maldives - we went for 5 nights and we paid full price for 1 night (best available rate), got another free and then for the remaining 3 nights were given 20% off so it did work out a good saving - we bought the book specifically for that. I think we still paid the taxes on the free night. edited by dibdab on 17/02/2013

Hopefully you can still find somewhere! Have you tried Rosso? It is an Italian in Amwaj Rotana and Italians can usually work out well priced as they can't charge such high prices for pizza and pasta - it has a restaurant area and a nice bar area. Media One hotel does a wine and cheese night - all you can eat and drink for AED 165 per person! It is not a very romantic setting as is a casual 'cafe' style place but it is great value and on top of the cheese from the table they also give you cheese fondue, mozzarella balls and cheese souffle. I think it goes on until 10pm, not sure whether they will have a Valentines thing on instead though so would be best to call and check. Or places at Jumeirah Beach Hotel may have spaces, they have quite a few outdoor romantic settings including Beachcombers and Dhow and Anchor. Same idea with Madinat Jumeirah - lots of nice outdoor settings. Hope you find somewhere nice!

I looked into this for my now brother-in-law when he was proposing to my sister, I can't actually remember which hotel it was now but there was one that I contacted (probably Jumeirah Beach Hotel or Al Qasr or similar) and they did a private beach dinner in a little gazebo with people to wait on you, flowers, candles etc. It looked beautiful but was quite pricey and he decided she would probably prefer him to spend the money on a bigger diamond! Other ideas I looked into for him were a hot air balloon ride (lovely idea but quite expensive if you had a private one) or even just a homemade romantic picnic (maybe you could wait nearby as 'staff' to pour their drinks) - although you would not be able to celebrate with champagne if you DIY-d it! Some other friends came here to celebrate a special birthday and for them I found a 'dinner flight' or something like that at the Burj Al Arab where you move around the hotel into different restaurants for each meal - very pricey though at something like AED 3500 for a couple!! Or even dinner at Atmosphere could feel very special - it isn't everyday that you get to have dinner (and be proposed to) in the tallest building in the world! Or Bab Al Shams at the terrace bar whatever it is called, a beautiful setting at sunset, he could even treat them to a night there.

There is one called something like 'Find my iPad' - if it is already lost it won't work though, you have to download it and activate it I think. Not sure how it works but I am sure I have ready about people having used it when theirs have been stolen and they were able to lock it remotely I think.

I may be wrong but I think the fine for not registering your car is something tiny like 10 dirhams per month - if they stop you and find that it is not registered then they can fine more but if you go into the office then I think it is just a small fine.

Thanks HereComesTheSun - so actually our contract should just be the same as everybody else's as it doesn't specifically say non renewable? So for everyone now the landlords can increase the price at the first renewal? Thanks - didn't know things had changed.

Thanks for the replies - so 'non renewable' means that at the end of your first year they can kick you out. 'Valid for one year only' means they cannot kick you out but at the end of the first year can increase your rent even though usually after the first year they are usually not allowed to increase it at all. Is that correct?

We have a home in the UK which we rent out and we have letting agents who manage the property for us. Finding the tenants is the relatively easy bit but where they have been worth their weight in gold was recently when we had tenants who stopped paying rent - they tried (unsuccessfully unfortunately) to get information from them about what the problem was and eventually when the tenants left at the end of their contract they arranged for the numerous repairs, cleaning, decorating, rubbish removal etc. to be carried out and oversaw everything before putting it back up on the market. We would not like to have been trying to sort that out ourselves being over here and trying to source reliable tradesmen and coordinate the work, I have no idea how we would have done it to be honest without causing a lot of hassle for friends/family who would have probably had to meet them at the house and help with the coordination. Our only involvement was by email where they needed direction and decisions from us, having had 2 bad tenants I would highly recommend ensuring you have property management.

I can highly recommend Divers Down based at the Miramar Al Aqah in Fujairah, run by a British guy and his wife and they have a good focus on safety which cannot always be said for dive schools in the region. You can also get discounted rates at the hotel if you are diving and make it a nice weekend away. It is approx a 2 hour drive though so depends whether you have a car.

Another one we have done is that there is a list of different attributes and features (e.g. sense of humour, eyes, smile, sporting ability etc.) and each person at the shower has to write down whether they think the baby should take after the mum or dad for each of the things on the list, it is quite funny. The girl who was having the baby said that she was going to keep them and see which was the most accurate as the baby grew up.

My company's account manager at Etisalat emailed last week and said that now the deadline for everyone is the 16th, I found this strange as also thought it was being done in phases and I hadn't had a text message. I called them and they said the same - even though all of the advertising says 'if you have had a text message'. So I went and did it just in case, I think I went to the wrong place because everyone had the same idea and it took over 3 hours! So I have no idea if it is a deadline for everyone or not but I did mine just in case.

Purely out of interest - does anyone know why Filipinos clean their teeth so much? In all of the office buildings I have worked in there are always Filipinos cleaning their teeth in the bathrooms. Weird question I know but just curious really as to why, as a race, they are so keen on dental hygiene!

I love my kindle and the reason I have one is because my Mum (in her 50s) has one and loved it so she recommended it and bought me one for my birthday. She isn't great with computers and manages to use it fine. I have the 3G one which I think is fantastic as I can purchase new books anywhere through the magical Amazon Whispernet! I would always finish a book and didn't find time to go to buy a new one but now I just download a few at a time and always have something to read - there are loads of free or very cheap books too which is great. And I do agree with DesertRose1958 that they look very boring but I bought a 'skin' for mine so now mine is covered in lovely red poppies instead of being grey. I also have a nice pouch for it to carry it around in - and my mum has a nice pink leather cover for hers which she keeps it in whilst she reads. So I definitely recommend accessorising! I did think I would find it very weird and would not like it as much as books but I love it.

A proper hotel or hotel apartments? My friend has just moved over here and is staying in the Dunes Hotel Apartments and says that is nice, not sure of cost though as her company is paying for it. Gulf Oasis hotel apartments are near there too I think and I have heard good things about them. There is a also Holiday Inn near MoE on Sheikh Zayed Road which doesn't look like it would be too expensive.

I'm afraid I can't answer your question about Business Bay but just wanted to say that if your husband is working in DIFC then you could also consider other options that are further away. I also work in DIFC and live in the Marina and I get the metro to work every day - it is 25-30 mins on the actual train then add time for getting to and from the metro stations - I usually set off around 50 minutes before I start work. Also very cheap! It is very nice and clean, sometimes a little crowded and I don't usually get a seat but very convenient and much cheaper than taxis or driving.

I looked into this a few months ago because my policy doesn't cover it and I wanted to be covered as we want to be thinking about starting a family in the next year - I went through a broker and ended up taking out a policy with BUPA. Quite expensive but very comprehensive cover - however there does not seem to be any company which provides only maternity cover so unfortunately it means taking out a whole health insurance policy which includes maternity. I went through Darren at Pacific Prime who was very helpful and gave me a lot of options so maybe just refer colleagues on to him or a similar company?

Another recommendation for Joseph - not sure how he is on price as I didn't go anywhere else, he doesn't seem especially cheap but the curtains are very good quality and he is a lovely man, so easy to deal with. He comes to your home to measure up, brings samples, provides a quote and then in a week or so comes to put the curtains up, fantastic service. We have used him in 2 homes now.

I have a friend who is in her early 30s and has terrible knees, however recently she has been able to strengthen them up a bit and has noticed massive improvements. She has been drinking some kind of cartilage building stuff, I don't know the name of it but she thinks it helps. Also she has been working with a very good personal trainer (in Hong Kong unfortunately not here) and he has helped her with exercise to strengthen her knees rather than hurting them, might be worth a try.

Just posted this on the AD forum but it looks like nobody uses it so I thought that other people living in Dubai with AD registered cars may be able to help! Does anyone know the opening hours of the place you can get your car registered on Sheikh Zayed Road? Can't remember the name of it. We live in Dubai but have an AD registered car so it is good to go there as means we don't have to go all the way to AD. We went last year in the evening but that we didn't need to get the car tested - this year we will need to so I need to know whether it is open in the evenings for testing and whether you can just drop in or if you have to make an appointment. I found the phone number online but no answer! Thanks in advance :) hey i do and just answered you there. give us time. school runs to do etc. Sorry busybee, will check your answer now - my comment wasn't based on the fact that nobody replied because I wouldn't expect anyone to reply in 2 seconds, it was just because I noticed that my post was the only one on there today. Thanks for the reply, I will go and have a look now :)
