We save 20% of our salary - which isn't very good really! But we like spending money unfortunately, we don't drive a Ferrari or anything like that but have very active social lives and enjoy diving, food, drink and holidays. I think we probably would stay if we weren't saving anything - we are planning to think about starting a family at some point soon-ish and with me working we won't be saving and we haven't talked about leaving. However I guess that is because we know that although we won't be saving we will still be enjoying a good lifestyle - it would be a different story if we weren't saving and were also having to budget ourselves tightly. There are definitely other places I would like to experience though so if it wasn't proving good for us financially to be here then we would probably think about our options. Edited to add that we have been here for 3.5 years and have only actually been saving since the beginning of 2012 due to previous debts and start up costs - good to know that other people are the same because I always imagine everyone else to have been saving since day 1 and have millions in the bank so thought we were doing terribly! edited by dibdab on 05/11/2012

We recently moved into 23 Marina and love it - we have been affected a bit by the roadworks but not too bad - it is just coming home at 7pm-ish that we have to queue but we have started coming off SZR at the previous junction and that isn't too bad. So access in terms of getting on and off SZR is very good. Spacious apartments (we have a 3 bed and it is quite huge - at least compared to our old apartment) and nice pool and gym. Other buildings that we really liked when we were looking were Park Island (only drawback was not much storage space but the building is fantastic) and Marina Tower.

After living in Oz for last 8 years was very excited to be able to get Shreddies here in Dubai, but they've disappeared off the shelves at supermarket in AR and tried Carrefour MOE........please let me know if anyone spots a box or 2 as we're having withdrawal symptons....sad but true :) I always used to get them in Almaya in the Marina but I have moved now so not sure whether they still have them, may be worth a look!

According to this interpretation of the labour law you get full pay for the first 15 days of sick leave and then half pay for the next 30 days before then going to no pay for any further absence. Not sure whether this is working or calendar days. http://www.visaprocess.ae/UAELabourLaw.pdf Dangerous Blonde that would seriously annoy me too, I can't bear people who don't pull their weight. We all have nights where we don't sleep well but we just have to drag ourselves in with a smile on our face and keeping topping up with coffee! My husband has people working for him who call in sick with body pains! Can't be any more specific! And some of his colleagues take 'travel days' where they basically book one less day than they should for their annual leave and because they are actually travelling as opposed to being on holiday they for some reason don't think they should take it as leave - and his company doesn't seem to do anything about it. I am lucky that I don't get sick so I have never actually taken a day off sick - I have dragged myself in with horrible hangovers, stinking colds and after sleepless nights, however - so it does annoy me when people are so quick to take time off.

I know my maid (Ethiopian) appreciates clothes (inexpensive from the Naif Souq), personal items such as shampoo, deodorant, perfume etc, but does prefer cash, I think. Thank you for the reply, maybe perfume or an item of clothing would be good then. Even knowing that cash would probably be appreciated I don't really want to give it as it just seems like I haven't thought about it - when she has given me gifts she has always explained why she has bought it and her reasons are quite thoughtful.

We don't cover costs for friends - we share costs when we all go for dinner and drinks and if we buy tickets or anything in advance for them then they reimburse us. I never got the impression that they expect us to pay for anything and to be honest - if they did expect it then we would be even less likely to! I never book anything without checking prices with them first as realise that some things are very expensive here. So if I arrange things I will email them before they arrive saying (if they wanted to go to brunch for example) 'we were thinking this brunch would be nice, it will cost AED 500 per person which is approx £85 - please let me know if this is OK as there are many other options which are less expensive'. Some will reply and say fine and others will say they are on more of a budget and would prefer something cheaper. In fact some friends pull out their credit card at the end of a nice meal and insist that they are treating us as a thank you for putting them up. With family we have paid for flights for some as we know they cannot afford it but then they still insist on contributing when they are here by buying groceries, cooking dinner etc. We have luckily not experienced anyone expecting us to put our hands in our pockets - I am not sure why we would pay for things for friends to be honest, family is a different matter but with friends I would expect them to pay their way.

Try to find out who caters events such as Rugby 7s or F1 - they usually have a whole row of assorted food stands so maybe they would be able to provide just one option instead of the whole lot. We went to a Hopfest at the Irish Village and I think I remember them having the stall/van type catering too.

It is a complete pain - we live in one of the towers on the next road along (with Tamani Hotel on the corner) and because of the road closure all of the traffic is now having to use this road which means that we have to queue for 10-15 minutes each evening where before there was no queue. I don't think it is going to be sorted soon either :( And the worst thing is that it is all for this tram or whatever they are putting in - which is completely pointless! For those who use public transport there are perfectly good buses which follow the same route. Grrrrrr.

Sorry, maybe my post was a bit misleading. I DO definitely want to have kids but I don't know whether I should have them here or go back to the UK to have them where I will have the support of my family. Are you talking about the actual giving birth rather than actually having and staying here with kids? If so - my friend has this dilemma and decided to stay here. Reasons were that she wouldn't have her own home in her home country so would have to stay with family and wouldn't feel completely comfortable. Also there would be the risk that her husband could have missed the birth as it is unpredictable when you will actually give birth. And if there are any complications (which there were as she ended up having an emergency caesarian) then she wouldn't have been able to fly back here with her husband so her new family would have been separated. However of course there are positives of going home because your family get to share that wonderful time with you. But then it would be difficult to get used to that family support and then have to leave it behind! Difficult decision.

I know exactly how you feel because we are also starting to think about starting a family and I worry about the same thing. However I don't think my parents would find us selfish or anything like that, they have never made us feel bad about moving away - but I just worry about how close the relationship between our parents and our children will be. I was extremely close to one of my sets of grandparents as they lived very close to us and my grandad collected us from school every day, we had such a special relationship which I loved. However my other grandparents lived in another part of the country and our relationship with them has always been very different (at some times almost formal) as we only saw them a couple of times a year. It makes me sad to think that my children may not have the amazing close relationship that I had with my grandparents. However I do think it is what you make it - I skype with my parents every week and I am sure that when we do have kids we would all make an effort - I would want to just make sure that my parents were kept in the loop with every little detail of our children's lives and also would want to try to make sure our children knew our parents well and would still be able to be close. We are not intending to go back to the UK anytime soon and therefore it wouldn't be something we could put off - and I wouldn't really want to anyway, these things have a way of working out, I think everyone just has to work hard at it and with skype, picture messaging etc. it is so much easier than it used to be.

We have just been to Velassaru which was fab. We didn't go all inclusive but I am pretty sure they do an all inclusive option. We used an Entertainer Travel voucher so got a free night and 20% off the remaining nights, not sure how the voucher would work in conjunction with all inclusive as we were B&B but you could check with them. Pretty good for non couples - although there are obviously mostly couples there, they do have some lively-ish entertainment on some evenings such as a band one night, DJ another night - nothing too crazy but enough so that you don't feel that you have to be tucked up in bed by 9pm! Only 20 mins boat ride from the airport too.

You should definitely see a doctor to ensure that it clears up ASAP - but years ago I had a sudden attack of horrible cystitis and couldn't get a doctor's appointment until the next day - my husband's mum made me drink loads of barley water, basically she poured boiling water over barley, let it sit there until it went cold and then I had to drink the water. Sounds gross but after a couple of litres of that and absolutely loads of fluids in general it actually cleared up within a day - I did still go to the doctor's appointment but by then was feeling almost fine. It sounded like an old wives tale to me but definitely helped. Like I said, I would never advise self medication alone for something like this so you should absolutely see the doctor but it is worth trying this too.

I thought I had cracked it when I got a new phone and suddenly my Mum and I could receive each other's messages and I even got a couple of old ones through that I had not received the previous week. However it soon went back to not working again and we would only receive occasional messages from each other. I have got her to download Whatsapp now and we are chatting fine on there so we will stick to that, no idea what the issue was. I am quite happy she has got Whatsapp though as I have been asking her to download it for ages so now we can message for free, it was costing me a fortune to send loads of messages that she wasn't even getting!

Gulf Talent publish an annual salary survey which covers a lot of different sectors, it may be worth having a search for that. Also I heard someone from Morgan McKinley on the radio the other day talking about their salary survey, not sure whether that was for all sectors but probably also worth a look. Good luck!

I don't know too much about it but I do remember when we almost moved a year or so ago I read a few negative things about it, I think they may have been in terms of maintenance and the pool. However people are always quick to talk about the bad stuff so I am sure there are many good points also. I walk past there quite often and notice that it their car park entrance is often blocked by taxis and other cars pulling in off the main road to pick up, drop off or just wait. Not sure quite how old it is but personally if I was buying I would want to go for a newer building - things seem to deteriorate so quickly here due to shoddy workmanship and that would concern me. Also, call me a cynic but if it is a fantastic deal I would want to know why! Obviously that is what you are trying to do by asking on here so hopefully you will get some feedback from people who live there. I wish I was brave enough to buy here because it kills me throwing so much money away on rent, hope it all goes well for you! :)

Spending a day at a waterpark is quite fun - otherwise there are some things to do around the creek such as take an abra ride or have a look around the souks. One thing I want to try is at the golf club at the creek you can go out on the water on some kind of floating thing and have a BBQ - or something like that! But that would probably be more fun as a group.

I agree with SeaofLove, things can sometimes take a very long time here with jobs but they work out OK in the end - hopefully this will be the case for your friend. I hope that if he was already in a job that he did not resign before he had a signed contract in his hands. If he did have a contract and is getting no response from the company at all then it may be worth him contacting the authority that the company is registered with such as the free zone authority or the labour department if not a free zone. I don't have any contacts I'm afraid but hope that things work out for him.

Harry Ghatto's is good fun - it is not like traditional karaoke where there is a stage and you have to get up in front of everyone - you request your songs at the bar and there is a microphone that just gets passed around the room, so when your song comes on you ask for the microphone and sing. Everyone else is the bar isn't really paying too much attention so you can just sing along with your friends, I much prefer it to places where loads of strangers are watching you singing on a stage!

I got mine from Ibn Batttuta mall, there was a stall selling only Blu products somwhere near the cinema end, I think many pharmacies sell them as well. Thanks gusncoley, we don't have children but still sounds like we should maybe plan a different destination just in case - I would like to book so we have something to look forward to but it sounds like for Beirut it should only be a last minute booking at the moment. Such a shame, it sounds like an amazing place and we have been meaning to go for ages but this is the first opportunity. We were actually supposed to be there this week but we cancelled the flights as we were moving to a new place and the dates ended up clashing.

Yes we did it last year when we almost moved to AD but needed to stick around to wait for a potential job offer in Dubai (which luckily came through) - we just contacted our landlord's representative, he gave us a price (which of course was more than our usual monthly rent) and then provided us with a new tenancy agreement for that month.

We were planning a trip to Beirut later in the year but we are now concerned by the recent advice to stay away from Lebanon. As far as we can see from Foreign & Commonwealth Office advice the areas to avoid seem to be those areas close to the Syrian border, however the advice does not specifically say that Beirut is OK. Does anyone have any family or friends there and may know more? We really want to go but at the same time do not want to risk getting into any issues. Thanks :)

Sorry if I am misunderstanding but you mean you are wanting to sell household items? Dubizzle is a good website for that - you can place adverts for anything on there, just be prepared for people to offer you lower (sometimes a lot lower) than you have asked for. But could your husband not take his furniture and appliances to his new place in Abu Dhabi? Or maybe his new place will be furnished in which case he wouldn't be taking them.

Great news that you have a trade licence approved for your new business and that your plans are underway. However unless you have a lot of savings I would advise that you should ensure that one of you has a job secured before you make the move - Dubai is a great place to live but is very unforgiving when it comes to debt. You will need money to set up your home and your business and you can't risk running out of money if your business takes a while to make a profit. I don't know about business or school costs but living costs really depend on where you want to live and what kind of lifestyle you want to lead. Housing for a family can costs anything upwards of around 40,000 dirhams per year, however this price would be for an apartment in areas such as Satwa, Karama or places which are further away from main areas of Dubai. Or if you wanted to live in a 3 bedroom apartment in Dubai Marina, for example, then you would be paying at least 130,000 per year. Groceries vary depending on where you shop and the type of food you eat - there are a lot of expensive imported foods but you can manage much cheaper if you eat locally produced foods. Eating out also varies - there are many inexpensive places but also many very very expensive places. If you drink alcohol then that is also expensive - a bottle of wine in a restaurant is at least 150 dirhams and a bottle of beer is at least 25 dirhams. A hire car will cost upwards of 1700 per month or you can buy a car which would work out cheaper long term.

anybody dealt with Joseph from Aleena curtains lately? Yes I have, we saw him a few days ago - he made curtains for us 3 years ago and now we are moving again so he is making some more for us and will do the alterations needed for our current curtains to fit our new windows, I highly recommend him. He is very nice to deal with, will come to your place at a time to suit you (which has been absolutely impossible to get any other company to do during Ramadan) and has all of his material samples in the car so if you want to then you can get your whole order sorted in one visit.

We are moving next week and chiller fees are included so I am hoping that this will help the bills a bit - although housing fees will probably catch up with us too!

My favourite is also Ruth's Chris - they have opened in the Marina now as well and have 2 for 1 on main courses during Ramadan - which reminds me I need to talk nicely to the hubby! They put butter on the steaks which is really tasty, the side orders are great and they serve on boiling hot plates so your steak stays hot all the way through the meal. I went to Gaucho last week and although starters were really good and the steaks were very tasty they did go cold quickly as we're served on cold plates, I also was disappointed by the side orders - chips were nothing special and there was no potato gratin which is my favourite with a steak. Very cool restaurant though, great decor and delicious cocktails. edited by dibdab on 01/08/2012
