Where is the best place to see what's open / closed etc and when they are going to go back to normal... Have guests who are traveling back on Tuesday..... TIA I would imagine the individual airport websites are the best places to check for most recent information, however in terms of when things will be back to normal I would think that it is impossible to tell right now, the best thing for your friends to do is just to check late tomorrow because things could completely change between now and then.

You do have to pay the fees and fines to the typing centre - that is the process. If you have a Dubai residency visa and you (or your husband if sponsored by him) work for a private company then the deadline is June 1st and you will not be fined now. However if your residency visa is Abu Dhabi the deadline is April 1st, Sharjah is February 1st and other emirates have passed already and the fines are racking up at 20 dhs per day. The deadline for those who work for government or semi government companies has also passed and those people will receive fines. The fines do seem to be applied consistently but I think that the confusion is around the type of companies that people work for because many don't seem to realise which companies are semi government. I have called the Emirates ID authority to check this with them and they have confirmed the above and have promised me that as I have a Dubai visa from a private company that my deadline has not yet arrived and therefore I will not be fined. However I will admit that I called twice to make sure I got the same answer from 2 different people!! edited by dibdab on 05/02/2012

Yeah we have the blu one - ours is the shower head because the other day I saw a Cobone offer or similar which was Blu but looked like some kind of filter cylinder attachment. I love it, my hair feels in much better condition since I have started using it and a friend who had suffered from hair thinning has noticed a lot of new hair growth since using hers a few months ago. Not sure whether the improvement is due to the filter or the vitamin cartridge or both but it's great. My mum and sister visited and loved using it too and each bought one to take back to the UK - although there is probably less need for it there as the water is better. I think they just liked the lemony smell! And there is loads of gunk in the filter when we wash it out which makes me feel happy that it isn't going onto my head!

affordable help, clean public bathrooms, food diversity, cheap petrol, brand new place to live in, etc etc etc Oh public restrooms, yes forgot about the public bathrooms. God, landed in JFK last summer and almost burned my clothes after visiting the bathrooms there. This reminds me of when my mother-in-law visited last year, she is very easily impressed and we were looking forward to seeing what she made of the big shiny hotels of Dubai amongst other things - we were not disappointed as no sooner had she stepped foot into the arrivals area at Abu Dhabi airport (which is really nothing special) she was oohing and aahing about the beautiful clean shiny floors! It was so funny but very sweet, she just thought everything was amazing :)

I love Dubai because: It hardly ever rains and is never cold (except for last week!) We have much more disposable income than at home which means that we can enjoy ourselves as well as being able to save money We have lovely friends from all over the world I can walk around on my own at night and feel safe There are many lovely places to camp within a couple of hours drive I can get to work for 4 dirhams on the lovely clean metro I am reminded every day of how fortunate I am because I see so many others who are less fortunate purely because of the country they were born in - this keeps my head out of the clouds

Really craving Chinese food, but English style...if you know what I mean! We live in Business Bay...can anyone recommend somewhere that will deliver here? Thanks! I know exactly what you mean but unfortunately I haven't found anything here that quite fits the bill :( Will be interested to see the other replies though, I would love a Chinese from the little greasy takeaway around the corner from my house in the UK!

I believe they say in the books that they cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer - I would always expect the voucher to apply only to the rack rate and I haven't ever pushed the issue with the Entertainer or any of the businesses.

[i'>"Personally - If this doesnt include housing allowance then no, this isnt enough. Im a single woman, on slightly less than this figure, which includes my housing allowance and I struggle to live. "[/i'> I'm sorry, I have to ask how a figure of around 300,000 dhs per year for a single woman and struggling to live are in the same roller disco? Is this really helpful advice for this enquiry? Of course you can do it on that amount, go for it. It won't be a 'struggle' at all, I know, we did it on much less! I'm not even going to put how much less. Just....lots. You could probably even get a few cats. Meow! Well done for you that you manage to live on a lot less money than this poster, however everyone has different lifestyles and expectations and this person was just giving their honest opinion to the OP's question - there is really no need to make derogatory comments regarding other people's spending habits.

They were blocking off entrances onto SZR yesterday and then loads of big black cars along with police cars came down the road along with a black stretch limo with flags on the front - then all was back to normal so I assume that someone important is in town - maybe it was the Turkish President as Fulla has said.

I just checked our finances and the absolute minimum we could live on would be 14.5k - however this includes ONLY rent (and our rent is only 75k per year for a 2 bed apartment), bills, groceries, car loan payment, average car maintenance costs, petrol, phone, other transport costs (metro and taxis as we have 1 car). However this would only be in a desperate situation because that is only essential spending and would allow for absolutely no fun, clothes, house stuff, cleaner, holidays, hair cuts etc. This is for 2 adults, no children. So if we were paying 120k rent then our monthly minimum would be 18,250 for absolute essentials. I would say that it would be possible to manage on 30k but it would be very tight and it would be unlikely that you would be able to save. However if you were planning to work as well then you would be OK.

Just checked with DH and he does it every month, he is def sure its foc and shows in our UK account immediatley. Having said that I have never had to draw against the transfered amount immediately. Fab thanks for that! I don't mind too much about it being instant but it does drive me mad having to pay charges every month to move my money around! Especially when I do the work myself online :) Thanks for checking with your husband, I will give this a go next month - just wish I had done it this month and saved myself the AED 150 :(

HSBC to HSBC online free of charge. Arrives instantly. Really? I am sure I used to get charged for transferring from my HSBC account here to my HSBC account in the UK, am also sure that it used to take a day or so to arrive otherwise I probably wouldn't have started using GCEN, it sounds like HSBC may have improved things then - thanks for this I will check it out! Would make life much easier :)

Thanks for the replies - for Western Union and Alansari do you have to go into the branch or can they arrange anything over the phone or internet? AED 15 for Alansari sounds much better than the HSBC charges - what do Western Union charge? So to use either of them I just have to go there, pay the money and the fee and give them my UK bank account details? Thanks for answering all of my stupid questions!

We have always used GCEN which involved transferring money to their UAE bank account and they then transfer it to their UK bank account and then to our UK bank account. We bank with HSBC here and would receive a charge of AED 40 to transfer to their UAE account, annoying but not too bad. However GCEN have now changed their bank account for us to transfer to which means we have to transfer directly to their UK account - easy enough but I have done this and by HSBC have been charged AED 150 for the pleasure. We only send small amounts to cover expenses for our house there so getting the best exchange rate isn't a massive concern, I just want to find somewhere that it doesn't cost me a fortune to use. I need to check what HSBC would charge us just to transfer direct to our own UK account - it is also HSBC so may be less than AED 150. So how do you all send money back to the UK? Thanks :)

But it annoys me having to pay over inflated prices for set menus etc and not being able to use Entertainer vouchers - so I think we will just get takeaway (not romantic at all but like I said - any excuse :) ) and an early night ;)

We have a small dishwasher that fits in the kitchen cupboard under the sink and it is great - unfortunately I cannot remember the brand but it was approximately 700 dirhams and it was from Lulu in Abu Dhabi. There was a Samsung one for twice the price but we decided to take the risk with the cheaper lesser known brand. We have been using it for 4-5 months and no issues - it cleans dishes well and we seem to be able to get plenty in it. We don't put pots and pans in it though as they would take up too much space but it can fit a few plates, bowls, glasses and cutlery in.

Thank you - very helpful No problem! I guess the main concern for people would be how easily they would be likely to find a new job - if it would be difficult for then they would take a lot more persuasion (money!) to offer themselves up for redundancy. I suppose what I hadn't thought of would be that there should be something extra for people who are taking redundancy voluntarily rather than involuntarily because if it would be the same package whether they choose it or not then they will just wait and take their chances - in which case you would have to make people redundant involuntarily anyway which is clearly something you are wanting to avoid.

I behave well because it would be unnatural to me to do anything else - I guess this is due to my upbringing. The majority of us are fortunate to have a 'normal' upbringing where we are taught right from wrong and do not have to resort to crime to survive. I could not live with myself if I physically hurt another person, stole from them or generally treated someone in a way that I would not like to be treated myself. I suppose some people may be tempted to commit a crime but are put off due to not wanting to be caught - but for me the thought to commit a crime would never be there in the first place.

In that case, What kind of incentive would you offer if you were in HR and wanted people to make themselves available for VR? Well if people have been there for less than 5 years the incentive would be that they get full gratuity rather than the reduced gratuity. If I was being made redundant I would expect to be paid my full notice without having to work it which would give me time to look for another job - and I would expect my visa and medical insurance to kept open during this time and ideally until I found another job (within reason). Maybe a little extra lump sum if that wasn't enough incentive for people.

If you are made redundant then you get 21 days of your basic salary gratuity for every year you have worked for the company. If you resign then if you are within your first year you get nothing, between 1 and 3 years you get 7 days of basic salaryfor every year you have worked there, between 3 and 5 years you get 14 days for every year and over 5 years you get 21 days - so if you have worked there for over 5 years then there is no difference in your gratuity but less than 5 years and there is. edited by dibdab on 26/01/2012

Probably got changed so that people who spend the money actually flying on the airline earn more miles than people spending money with other companies (it works this way with the Skywards partners too- generally, you earn less with them than when spending direct with Emirates) Would also be worth looking into if Etihad offer a premium cabin bonus- with Emirates' Skywards, if you fly in Business you get 75% bonus miles on top of the base and First is 150% (this is on paid tickets only, obv but makes them add up fast) Skywards also run promotions under "miles accelerator" and certain routes get bonus miles if you fly on certain dates- it's all on the Skywards website. edited by SkyKitty on 26/01/2012 Yes Etihad do offer extra miles for business and first class tickets.

Thanks Dibdab, is that a Infinite card you have as not sure which is best the Classic, Gold, Platnium or Infinite. The Classic and Gold card have no joining fees for life but does anyone know the annual joining fee for the Platnium and Infiinte cards? Any other good deals with credit cards that earn you miles on either Emirates or Etihad etc.... We have the platinum card, not sure about fees for the others but you can find all of the info on the link below. I am not sure what the criteria are for being eligible for the different level cards but the 'higher' the card the more miles you earn per dollar. http://www.adcb.com/riseabove/index.asp edited by dibdab on 25/01/2012

Can anyone tell me what the charges and fees are associated with acquiring the ADCB credit card and also using it. Are there any other cards that you can use to collect miles that dont have high percentage fees to use them? We pay AED 1000 each year for the ADCB Etihad card and as we pay the full balance off every month we pay no interest - other than that we don't pay any other charges. It is well worth us paying the fee as we make our money back many times over with the Etihad miles.

We have the ADCB Etihad card - we spend absolutely everything on it and then pay off in full each month. We earn loads of miles, have had numerous free flights with them over the past 18 months since we had the card. Including most recently return Business Class to Thailand. However as someone else has said they have recently changed their redemption miles so you now have to have more miles for most destinations for the free flights. I am not sure how they compare to Emirates, we have always used Etihad as started out in AD when we first came here. I think the benefits of the card are pretty good - automatic silver membership which gives you access to lounges (not the Etihad lounge in AD at the moment as it is small so they have had to limit it only to Business and First Class passengers but you do get access to the Al Reem lounge which is fine - and other airport Etihad lounges are great). You also get 2 one way transfers to AD airport each year which is great if you live in Dubai. Also 2000 extra miles in months where you spend a certain amount (which we always do because put everything on it like I said). I think there are a few other benefits too but can't think what. I'm a huge fan!

Am feeling very down, have suffered with these bouts of 'lowness' before but feel just awful this time. Can't see the point in anything, am sooo tired, can hardly bring myself to do the school run or have a conversation. Just want to go to bed and stay there. Any ideas on how to pull myself round?? It sounds like you're suffering from depression, which is sometihng unrelated to your circumstances. It is a brain chemistry problem. Go see a good Dr. I've heard that Dr Fischer on Wasl Road is very good. You are not weak. Good on you for speaking up and asking for help. It will pass with the right treatment. I agree with Ginnee - as good as it is for everyone to offer advice it sounds like it is something that needs a bit more help than going for a run or getting your nails done, that is good for if you are feeling a bit fed up but not for this - if you can't see the point in anything and just want to take yourself off to bed then it does sound like depression and you should go to see your doctor.

I can't remember what we paid for a driver because we did a few different journeys with them - we booked through Sri Lanka in Style - I remember they were fairly expensive and I remember asking them about this - this was their reply.... [b'>The reason for this is that all our chauffeur guides are the highest paid in the market. They are all qualified, trained, informative and friendly. I can personally assure you that they will not in any circumstance sacrifice the quality of your holiday for their personal gains, such as commissions. I will see to it that we assign one of our best chauffer guides for you. This is very important. A good chauffer guide in this country is really the difference between an ordinary holiday and a truly extraordinary journey – we cannot stress this enough. It is important that they avoid tourist traps and unsolicited shopping, practices all too prevailing amongst other travel companies. If you are comparing quotes with other companies, which is understandable, please don’t get too excited if the cost of some of our competitors looks like a bargain. Chances are the chauffer guide is not paid at all and will make his money on commissions. [/b'> And I have to say that the 2 drivers that we had during our holiday were very good - they spoke excellent English, had a huge amount of knowledge about the history of the country and other things, pointed out interesting things to us and stopped when we wanted to take pictures, buy fruit from the side of the road etc. The cars were also comfortable and clean - very important as journeys are extremely slow.

There is a form that you should complete for HMRC which tells them that you have moved abroad. If you do not have UK property or any savings or anything in the UK then you shouldn't need to complete a tax return - I contacted them and told them I needed to as rent out a property there but you shouldn't need to if you have no ties at all to the UK. If you have money in a UK bank account which earns interest then you should be declaring that in a tax return. Give them a ring to check, they are actually quite helpful.

Where in Dubai are you living? And what type of exercise do you enjoy - for example I am a member of a 'studio' which is just gym classes but no machine etc for you to go and do your own workouts - there are also some boxing gyms - and 'normal' gyms - and boot camps. So when you say that you want to join a gym on the beach do you mean that you want to exercise outside or you want to join a beach club so that you can use the beach facilities and the gym?

If you were willing to fly from Abu Dhabi then consider Etihad and if you go onto their website and register for their loyalty program and their 'Sky Blue' program (supposed to be for Manchester City fans but anyone can sign up) then you get 15% off flights to Manchester. AED 2700 is a good price these days but it is worth checking with Etihad using that discount and see what price you can get. There are free Etihad buses that go from Chelsea Tower on SZR or from Marina Mall that will take you to AD airport.

Thanks for the reply. I just don't think I could relax for the whole time and our new life back in the UK should be an exciting time, not spent with me worrying the ship will make it. The insurance is over 50% of the actual shipping cost, which seems a lot to me. We'll keep 'discussing' I guess. Thanks. I suppose it is like any kind of insurance - it seems a waste of money when you fork out for it and everything turns out OK - but when you need it you are glad you had it. I suppose it just depends on whether you can afford to pay for the insurance - and if so and you didn't take it then how would you feel if your entire shipment disappeared and could you afford to replace it? I am sure it is very very unlikely that your shipment would be lost but I guess it is possible. It is a difficult one, I hate paying for insurance too!

Yes I have - only it was by accident, I forgot to send the form back to the shipping company - I realised on the day that they were coming to pack up my house and called them in an absolute panic but they wouldn't let me arrange it then as it was the day that the movers were coming - even though they hadn't arrived yet! I didn't dare tell my husband and spent weeks worrying - however all was fine thank goodness. And actually if my husband had criticised me he would have regretted it because I was left on my own to pack up our house and coordinate our move from the UK so I think it was acceptable for me to make a mistake! I don't think I would intentionally ship without insurance, if your stuff disappeared you would wish you had got it - however if it really is very expensive and you think maybe it isn't worth it compared to the value of the shipment then maybe it isn't worth it.

It looks like the deadline has only been extended for people whose visas expire this year - the Gulf News article doesn't really make this clear.... http://www.eida.gov.ae/en/news-updates/news/extension-of-registration-grace-periods-for-residents-with-residencies-expiring-in-2012.aspx So when was the actual deadline for expats in Dubai? I was 100% sure it had been extended which is why I didn't bother getting one yet as didn't see the point in paying for something I didn't need to have - seeing as it more expensive if you have longer left on your visa. It seems that people are already getting fines. I'm so confused!
