I am sure there are HR people who will know better than me but I would certainly be concerned that they would try to underpay his gratuity when the time comes - why else would they need to register him on a low salary? And I assume that if your husband's contract which is registered with the labour department states this low salary then he wouldn't have a leg to stand on if he tried to report them for it.

I had a similar experience with one of the maintenance men in my building - I was trying to get a taxi but none would take me as I only had a 100 dirham note for a 10 dirham journey - I always check before I get in because often in the morning they don't have change which is a complete nightmare as they try to find some from other taxi drivers, shops etc.... So I was standing outside and he watched me stop 5 taxis and send them on their way as they didn't have change (or claimed not to) - he came over to me and asked why I hadn't got into the taxis so I told him - and he pulled 10 dirhams out of his pocket and gave it to me! I said that I couldn't take it but he insisted. It was so nice of him, he could have just ignored me. I went to find him later and gave him 20 dirhams back.

That looked like a good show - but not really what I would call a flash (or splash) mob because it all looked pretty organised to me with the crowds waiting behind barriers to see it.

Has he contacted Scuba Dubai? They may have some dive instructor work. I think there is another dive school somewhere too, but can't remember the name. Scuba Dubai has closed down unfortunately. Other dive schools are Al Boom and Divers Down (based in Fujairah) and there are others also - however maybe this is not what he wants to get into if you say he is looking for a 'real job'. It still may be worth contacting them to see whether they have any vacancies that are not as an instructor - such as admin, marketing etc. Would he be willing to live in Abu Dhabi? Zayed Sports City is there and may be worth contacting.

We probably don't spend a huge amount more on essential expenses such as rent (vs mortgage at home), bills, insurance, car loan etc but we do spend a great deal more on socialising and material items - purely due having to more disposable income here. I think that if we went home I would really struggle with having to cut this back again. So we do spend a lot more than we did in the UK but that is because we can, not because we have to. However we earn significantly more than we did in the UK so we are still in a much better financial position than we would be at home. Now if only I could spend what we did in the UK and earn what we do here.....:)

I'm not sure about the insurance side of things but my husband's boss tried to renew his UK licence and on the form it asked him whether he holds any other licences - he put down that he has a UAE licence and he was told that he is not allowed to hold a licence in 2 countries and was not allowed to renew his UK licence! I had no idea that this was the case and I have no idea what the reason is. We can hire cars with our UAE licences I assume so that is OK but not sure about private cars.

There is a vintage watch shop in DIFC but I haven't been myself so I don't know how much of a range they have or whether they know which year they were made in but it might be worth calling them, they may have contacts that could get you what you are looking for.

We considered the same thing this year because it kills me to be forking out so much in rent without the benefit of having anything at the end of it - however I have heard so many horror stories here about people who have bought properties that I just didnt dare take the plunge. And I imagine the process to be a nightmare given how difficult even simple administrative tasks can be. Having said that, I am sure that for every bad story we hear there are 10 good ones because people tend to shout louder about bad experiences than good. Another thing that concerns me about buying is the poor build quality here, I would be concerned that my property may not survive until the end of the mortgage. The apartment we rent is just over 2 years old and already has a lot of damp - and I have seen Springs villas in a poor state. But keep asking around because there are many people who have bought properties here and would be able to give good advice of what to look out for, don't be put off by those of us who haven't gone down that route because we probably don't know enough about it and have only heard the bad stories.

I'm sorry I can't help as we have an apartment too and don't have the time to give a dog enough attention but I just wanted to reply and bump this up for you. It is so hard to try to rehome a pet as you never feel that anyone else can give them the love that they need - but I am sure you will find a lovely family for him. I know how you feel as we had a dog at home and if my in-laws hadn't have taken her I don't think I would have been able to move here, I couldn't face anyone else having her - she now has the best life of any dog I know and I am sure you will find the same for yours. It is so lovely that despite how you must be feeling about your own situation your main concern is for your dog, if only many more people in Dubai had the same compassion for animals.

If you are unhappy with your body and want to make changes - for you and not for your husband - then it is probably best not to just focus on cellulite and instead try to make a lifestyle change. If your new husband and their friends have 'fit bodies' as you say then maybe say to him that you would like to improve yourself and ask for his help in doing that - I am sure that he will not be turned off by your body but by doing this he will see that you would like to make changes. You don't have to become a gym freak, just find things that you will enjoy doing that won't feel like you are forcing yourself to exercise - such as swimming in the sea on your beach outings, taking long walks with your new husband along the beach. And focus on eating nice, fresh, healthy food and lots of water and juice. I know these are not instant changes which are what you want but if you start now and explain to your new husband what you want to do with him there to support you then I am sure that you will begin to feel better about yourself. And there are loads of things you can wear in the meantime that will hide the bits you are worried about - there are some lovely swimsuits around which are flattering to the figure, even ones that hold bits in and draw attention to your best bits. And you can buy some nice sarongs to wear over your swimsuit for when you are walking around. Good luck and have a wonderful wedding!

Does anyone know if they are open any evenings? I got a text from them last week saying that they urgently needed my blood type (O-) but I can only go after work and all day nobody was answering the phone numbers on the text message - and it is quite a detour for me if I get there and find out they are closed.

the link I gave you is not a paper copy it is an online submission and you will get a receipt from the tax office when you submit Thanks Suethack - I misunderstood the system and thought that they must submit a paper copy on your behalf, I will give that a go then if all is OK with it, weird that we can use that system but not the HMRC one!

Thanks for the replies - I am just worried that if I submit a paper copy then I will be charged for late return because I think the deadline is different for paper submissions - obviously my 09/10 one is late and I have had charges for that anyway but I don't want any more so don't want to be charged for the 10/11 one - would both of these options be a late return? I am just confused because my husband's was definitely done online last year. And how ridiculous that if you are abroad you can't use the online submission - surely people who live abroad would benefit more than those in the UK from being able to use the online service!?

I make salmon risotto - not an official recipe as such but I chop the salmon into cubes and cook it in a pan with chopped onion, mushrooms and peppers (I would add more veg but hubby doesn't like it!). Meanwhile I cook risotto rice according to the instructions on the pack - and when both are cooked mix it all together and add a bit of parmesan and black pepper. If you are a pork eater I also love to wrap salmon in parma ham and cook in the oven until the parma ham is crispy - serve with veg and jacket potatoes.

Definitely report it to the building management - we live in a building with useless management but when I reported cockroaches they organised a visit from pest control for the whole building and they seem to come every 6 months now. So even though cockroaches are common here hopefully EMAAR will take it seriously and want to prevent it from getting worse. We had the brown gel put around our kitchen as well and we didn't see any for absolutely ages, every now and again we get one but it is rare, not like before where we were seeing one every few days. And I was the same - horrified thinking that it was a reflection on my cleanliness! Luckily we only seem to get baby ones but I still can't stand them, I think it is the fact that they are so invincible that freaks me out!

As always my resolutions will be eat more healthily, exercise more and therefore lose weight - however these never happen (or happen and then get undone before the year is out) so I don't count them as proper ones! I would like to: 1) Go to the supermarket before the cupboards are completely bare and therefore avoid having to get a takeaway and buy lunches at work once every week. 2) Be more organised with meal planning and sticking to the plans because I seem to end up throwing away a lot of food. 3) Spend less - we spend a fortune and there surely is no need, I need to learn to say no to things and not be afraid of missing out.

Legally no but many people do - it is probably unlikely that your car would be searched but not impossible - and I actually don't know what would happen if they found anything, whether they would just take it off you or report you. We have never had an issue taking supplies with us when we go camping over the border but I know it is possible to get into trouble. edited by dibdab on 29/12/2011

I will never feel properly Christmassy in Dubai because for me it means family (both mine and the in-laws), my Mum's Christmas dinner, listening to vinyl on my Dad's record player, my Mum's Irish coffees and wrapping up warm because it is freezing cold outside! And until this year it has always included my grandparents :( So unless my entire family and husbands entire family come out for Christmas and turn the outdoor temperature down by 25 degrees I'm not sure Dubai will do it for me! But I think that next year if I can't go home I will get friends over to ours and try to recreate a family Christmas - it still won't be the same but it won't feel like just any other brunch day.

In the UK you do still accrue annual leave whilst on maternity leave so I imagine it should be the same otherwise you're not actually getting 45 days mat leave - but things never seem to be done as they should here so it could be different.

It's the same for every woman on husbands sponsership. As long as you have NOC and company does your labor card it's no problem (as the other ladies have said). Could not inform DH of that though... lol. I could have my shoe budget cut quite severely if I become a lady of leisure so I guess it is in my best interests to be honest! :)

We went to Yalumba - food was excellent and a huge amount of choice, champagne seemed to be topped up after every mouthful! My only complaint would be that they had squeezed people in to every last square inch of the place, inside and out, so it did feel very busy but it was still rare that we had to queue for food. The best thing is that they keep their bar open afterwards so you can stick around and dance outside which was nice. But even though we had a great time I hardly felt Christmassy this year so I think I have decided I won't brunch again, would rather do something at home which would feel more like Christmas would be if we were with family in the UK. edited by dibdab on 28/12/2011

Just do a new NOC with the new passport and visa details on it, and give that to your company, :) x Thanks TheMrs! Do I need to get a new labour card? It's the same husband so hopefully not :)

Apologies Sanddy Dog and Al Quwatain - I had misunderstood and thought that the intention was to go into the fb account behind their back - I would fully support the idea of them having the account with the knowledge that you can go in at any time and check what they are up to, I think that up to the age of 15-16 this is totally acceptable.

I don't have children so I am sure I don't quite understand - but is this not similar to reading your child's diary? Which happened to a friend of mine when we were around 14 - her mum found out some things she wished she hadn't, went mad about it and it permanently damaged the mother-daughter relationship - 16 years later they are still not the same. It was nothing major, just things that most teens will get up to but her mum must have been naive in thinking that her daughter wasn't. I know that you have to ensure that your children are safe, especially with the dependence on social networking, but surely snooping around their personal messages isn't the way? My parents and I had mutual trust when I was a teen and I would have never let them down - maybe things I was getting up to wouldn't have totally met their approval but I never put myself in an unsafe situation because I knew they trusted me and wouldn't have wanted to go against that - I would say no to some things that my friends were doing because I knew that if something went wrong then my parents would be so disappointed. Surely it is better to work on that kind of relationship with each other than to go behind their back? I know that not all situations and relationships are black and white so it is probably easy for me to say these things when I don't have children but the idea of reading someone else's personal messages just sounds wrong - even if it is your son or daughter.

Wow I would have no idea what to do - and I don't think it is possible to advise unless you have been in the situation. My textbook advice would be that if a man cheats and gets away with it (ie gets a hard time but couple remains together) then he will more than likely do it again - research has apparently shown this. So you should leave him. However life is not as black and white as that so textbook advice isn't particularly helpful - and especially when you have been together for such a long time. I guess you have to ask yourself that if he has cheated will you ever be able to trust him again, why has he done it..... Hope you are OK :( xxx

Nice driver for the dune bashing and the desert camp thingy was good, nice food and entertainment was as decent as it gets as these things. Pick up and drop off from the apartment. And they even gave us our vouchers back to use again if we wanted to. That was about 18 months ago though.

Where/how does one purchase tickets in advance? You can purchase them online - google 'at the top burj khalifa' and you will find their website - I think they close the online purchasing for tickets a day in advance though so best to do it a few days prior. Otherwise you can buy them from the ticket desk in Dubai Mall at the At The Top entrance.

(but sorry for moaning, yay for those of you who are feeling more in the spirit of things!) Transfer phone to mobile and go home...... or to an outside vendor meeting ;) Sadly I don't have outside vendor meetings or I would have been at one way before now! :) And as tempting as diverting the phone is I can guarantee that the second I do someone will decide to pop in because they have left something! Just my luck! So I guess I am just going to have to sit here and wallow in self pity for the next few hours :D

Have you done a dhow trip with them? I have done a dhow weekend in the Musandam for diving but they do similar things for snorkelling and dolphin spotting, the mountain scenery is beautiful and it feels like you are a million miles away - you can't even get a phone signal! I haven't been myself but have heard good things about the wildlife park (zoo!) in Al Ain. Hatta Pools is great but we had our car broken into there so although we had a beautiful afternoon there before we discovered the car I would unfortunately be reluctant to go back, I would possibly go again if there was a group of us but I think that now I would feel a little unsafe.

Did you complain ? did they try and fix it ? did they charge you ... I have had bad haircuts still gone back to the same salon due to the fact that the stylists try and make things better and sort out the problem. Id be interested in hearing on the customer service aspect and what they tried to do to make it better ... Agreed - bad haircuts do happen unfortunately but it is only fair to try to come to a solution with the salon before giving them a bad name. It amazes me how many times friends have come away from a salon unhappy and complain to others about the salon but haven't actually told the salon that they are not satisfied. However if you have discussed with them and they are not being helpful then fair enough. But sorry to hear that you are unhappy with your hair Pinkpea, I hope it grows quickly so that you can get it evened out. edited by dibdab on 22/12/2011

Make sure you buy your tickets in advance - they are AED 100 but if you just turn up and want to go up straight away then they are AED 400. I have only been up once but there was no delay - we collected our tickets and went straight through, there is a constant flow of people but they sell a limited number of tickets for each time slot so that it is staggered and there are no particular rush hour problems. There is a restaurant but it is not in the viewing area, it is a separate entrance entirely and you would have to make a reservation - it is called Atmosphere, there is also a bar there. The entrance to the restaurant and bar is in the Burj Khalifa itself whereas the viewing deck or 'At The Top' as it is called is accessed from Dubai Mall. All there is in the viewing deck is an area to walk around and take photos - there is an inside section and an outside section. There is also a shop selling very overpriced souvenirs! Enjoy, it's a great view from up there.

My husband's company wouldn't offer an upfront lump sum for accommodation, we had to move from Abu Dhabi to Dubai because we couldn't stump up an entire year's rent when we first arrived (who can?!) - my husband then had to commute daily for 2 years. So there definitely are companies who will not pay the rent cheque upfront.

You have 3 options - 1. You can get a part time maid through an agency (the agency provides the maid with a visa and they are legally authorised to work for you, you pay approx 30 dirhams an hour, get a receipt and all is above board) 2. You can find your own maid, provide them with a visa, accommodation, annual flights home, medical insurance and monthly salary and they would be able to work for you alone, if they were found to be working for others as well then everyone involved would be in for a huge fine - even if you had no idea that your maid was working for other people 3. You can employ a maid for a few hours a week who has her visa provided by someone else (an individual rather than an agency) - this is illegal and if the maid gets caught then you, the maid and her sponsor will all receive a large fine, which if you are no able to pay will result in a prison sentence and the maid will probably be deported. So in answer to your question, if the maid has her own visa (other than an agency visa) then no, they are not allowed to work for you part time. Many people go for this option but these are the risks.
