When I have Christmas at home with my mum and dad (not this year sadly :( ) every year the starter my mum makes is prawn cocktail with little squares of brown bread and butter (made with cream in the sauce, yum yum) and she also does homemade mushroom pate with toast for my vegetarian uncle and meat pate (not homemade) and toast. All quite 80s I guess but they are tradition now and delicious! And very easy to make.

I have been to Oman via this border recently and it was fine. It took approximately 1.5 hours (from Bur Dubai area) to reach the UAE side of the border, just keep following directions to Hatta. When they reach the UAE side they need to park at the side of the road and go to the little white huts for their exit stamp. Then back in the car and after approximately a 10 minute drive they will reach the Oman side of the border - it is a large building and is clearly signed Hatta Border Post. Park in the car park (do not get into the queue of cars until after) and go into the building, complete a small visa application form and then go to the desk. Pay 50 dirhams for UAE residence visa holders or 200 for those on a visit visa (or residence visa holders who are not with their sponsor - and by this I mean if they are sponsored by a family member, if you are sponsored by your employer and they are not present then you still only have to pay AED 50). They take credit cards. They will also be asked for proof that they have insurance to drive in Oman so make sure they take all of their paperwork with them. They will receive their entry stamp to Oman and then can drive on. In the building they will be given a small piece of paper which says how many people are in the car, this has to be handed in at a little hut just after they leave the border post. I don't know how long it then takes to drive to Muscat as I went somewhere else - but hope this helps! It was all pretty quick for us but it may be busy at Christmas. edited by dibdab on 19/12/2011

Have flown with both and they are OK. Thai airways is the national carrier and Asia Air "budget" out of Malaysia. Far better service for short flights than Ryanair! I would be happy using either again. Thanks DM that's good news - I love Etihad and Emirates as much as the next person but when they are 3 times the price I can't bring myself to pay it! And in fact it isn't even Etihad and Emirates that would be the replacements in these cases, it would be other unknown Asian airlines so I'm sold on Air Asia and Thai Airways!

Almaya is in the Marina, there are a few but the one I go to is the one you can see from SZ Rd - hopefully that is where I got them from! If they don't have them then sorry!

I am not sure what you mean when you say you need a PO box, do you mean you need to arrange having your own PO box? If so then I think you can do it online.... https://www.epg.ae/postbox/faces/LoginPage.xhtml;jsessionid=52D06FF4948F816DAD4932F0F01173A7 But if you need to post something then you could get the metro to Emirates Towers metro station and then walk into DIFC, there is a post office in there. I don't know which area of Dubai you are in so that may not be convenient but I don't know whether the other post offices are, I am sure someone else will though.

No I quite understand your point dibdab. It's a tricky situation. I wouldn't want to convince someone to come over unless I rightfully believed they could make it work long term (at the very least one full year) and that it was a positive step for them. What I've found is that by creating my own social events I am able to negate spending 1000+ dirhams a weekend socializing. Instead of clubs we do cocktails at home, rental movie nights in rather than at theaters, potlucks instead of brunches, group board games and other creative ideas (themed parties where all chip in- for halloween, thanksgiving, christmas etc) and this way the socializing costs are cut considerably. That being said though it is difficult to do this without the group of friends first. (And even more difficult in a studio I guess!) Your money saving ideas sound great - if the person you would be wanting to come over can be friends with similar salaried and like minded people then that is a different story - it sounds like you still manage to have a great social life without spending a fortune. I suppose the best way is to be upfront with the potential recruit about living costs - that way they can't come out here and claim that they were missold. Your ideal situation would be to find someone who is passionate about the job and organisation and then they may be less concerned about salary.

I think it is possible but I think that the problem would be that they would arrive and very quickly would realise that they wouldn't be able to keep up with the lifestlye of most people here. I am not saying that it is compulsory to be spending loads of money on socialising and holidays but I think it is a fairly tough place to live if you have to be very careful with your spending - especially as a single person and especially as they will be new here when you have to accept a lot of social offers in order to make friends. So although you may get them here I think they would quickly become unhappy and feel resentful of the salary. Obviously there is a good reason for paying them this if you are on a budget with your grant but I think they would end up leaving for another job quite quickly ot would be very demotivated when they realise what others earn. I hope this reply doesn't sound shallow, I am not trying to say that you can only have a happy life if you are dripping with designer gear and out drinking every night but I think that 8k would be extremely tight with very little room for fun.

Very bizarre, anyone who can act in such an immature way and can involve their children is certainly not someone who deserves your friendship. If this person cannot give you a good reason as to why they won't speak to you anymore and thinks that your children shouldn't play together then I don't think you should waste time thinking about them, there are plenty of other people out there who deserve you I am sure. Let the children do what they want to do, clearly they are more intelligent than this woman gives them credit for and can see that there is no harm in being friends with each other.

They were discussing this on the radio this morning and a Dad phoned in and said that he was sick of his kids demanding expensive gifts and not appreciating them. He said that he had asked each of his children to choose 3 things that were meaningful to them and they had to then give those gifts away to a less fortunate child. He said that they didn't like the idea at first but then had really got into it and were excited about making other children happy.

If you can go along to the coffee mornings then do so. And you have to put yourself out of your comfort zone and force yourself to go up and introduce yourself to people - start conversations with people wherever you are, I actually met one of my friends in a supermarket queue! Don't be shy with swapping numbers with people. It all feels totally unnatural when you move away from home where you probably haven't had to make an effort with new people for a really long time. Also look for clubs to join or courses to go on - book clubs, bootcamps, photography etc. Everyone arrived here at some point, some longer ago than other, but most people will remember what it is like and will be very welcoming. Sometimes people have very close circles of friends and are not willing to extend a welcome to newcomers but the majority will do. Just be shameless and invite yourself along to everything you can :)

I found I needed them the most when they were not there any more. This just actually made me shed a tear but it is so true - I am sure that we are all guilty of taking people for granted whilst they are here and suddenly we realised we shouldn't have done when we can no longer tell them how much they mean to us.

I am very fortunate in that I haven't had anything awful go wrong in my life (obviously have had terrible times such as grandparents passing away but nothing that 'shouldn't' happen if that makes sense) - so for me I have needed them when I have had important changes going on - such as when we bought our first house and my dad was a great source of financial and mortgage advice and let me ask him all sorts of stupid questions - and when I was planning our wedding completely on my own because my husband to be was already working here and therefore my mum was a massive support and was happy to spend many hours either on the phone with me bouncing ideas around or going to appointments with me. This is a really good question actually because it has made me realise just how much I do rely on my parents even though I feel so independent and how much they have done and will always do for me. I just hope that I have been such a source of support to them.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated :) SanRan - I probably didn't explain myself properly, I do intend to properly qualify and do all of the exams over the next 3 years or so but when I said about doing a couple of exams I just meant that I would start them before looking for a new job in the accounts field because it would prove to potential employers that I am serious about the career. But I appreciate the advice about it possibly being difficult to find a job other than as a fully qualified accountant, I will definitely bear this in mind. I would love to get a trainee job with one of the big firms so I will look into that, for some reason I just thought that here it wouldn't be possible in the same was as it is in the UK - I guess that living here has turned me defeatist! But I will definitely look into whether they offer these types of roles here as they would be absolutely perfect. Otherwise I will be paying for myself to do the exams, taking annual leave instead of being granted study days, finding somewhere to work where I can be mentored by a chartered accountant etc. Which I am prepared for but it will be very difficult if not impossible so a company that would support me with this would be fantastic. Thanks again everyone for the info - and good luck to you too coco pops, I hope you find your calling!

Thanks for the reply Freckly :) No I don't have accounts experience but I do have a degree - accounts was a very small part of it but I wouldn't be able to recall any of it! I am British. I was thinking I would do a couple of exams and then look for a position as it might give me better options than if I start looking with absolutely no experience of proof of commitment. I will try the agencies you have suggested, thanks :)

I have often seen men in local dress buying alcohol in the shops that are a bit more slack with asking for alcohol licenses - can he really not get it himself? Also - if he dressed in Western clothes then who would know that he is Muslim? Fair enough, but it is illegal to give ANYONE alcohol, and so this is the point. Do it at your own risk, but honestly, Why break the law, for anyone elses benefit? If one does not mind being locked up, visa cancelled and deported, then GO AHEAD. I recommend that nobody on this forum say it is ok, just because they have seen Muslims openly buying it. Sorry I don't think I explained myself properly - I was not saying it is OK to buy this man alcohol, quite the opposite - I was saying that I don't see why he can't get it himself like the many other Muslims who manage to.

You can lend books too but I think that only some books are eligible for sharing for some reason - if you log into your amazon account and click into the purchased book then lending will be an option in one of the drop down boxes if it is allowed. I think you can lend for 14 days and in that time you can't read the book as well as the person who has borrowed it. Haven't tried it myself yet, was reading up on it last week. Or - like has already been said - you can have both registered to your account - but that then means that if you have the one click ordering thing set up then if she ordered a book then it would automatically be paid for by you. edited by dibdab on 05/12/2011 ya thats fine - I would pay anyway. Sounds perfect then - I had to add a second kindle onto my account recently because mine broke - you just register a kindle in the same way that you did with your first one and then you click into each of the books and send to the new kindle as well. Not sure if there may be an issue with reading the books at the same time as each other or anything like that but if you google you will find the info.

Yes ours is definitely still high - for November our bill was AED 600 - this is a 2 bedroom apartment which had the AC switched off for the vast majority of the month. And that isn't even including housing fee, I was expecting to be charged it this month but no. It drives me mad to see the DEWA released statements which say that everyone in Dubai must be mistaken about them charging more and the problem is that we are all being wasteful. Everyone in Dubai. All at the same time.

There is a 'company' called Zopa in the UK - it is lending for people who struggle to get credit for whatever reason, as far as I know you have to apply on there and put details on of why you need the money and then people (as opposed to banks) can choose to lend you the money - they only thing is that they can decide whether they think you are a risk or not and if they decide that you are then they would offer you the money but only at a high interest rate. Someone I know lends money to people through it and was showing it to me. It sounds dodgy I know but I think it is well established in the UK and credit checks are done etc. Might be worth a look, if you get offered something but at an interest rate you don't like then you can always turn it down.

This is a difficult question, I can't quite remember! I am pretty sure I used to have sandwiches but I can't remember what was in them. As well as the sandwich I think I had crisps, snack size chocolate bars, cake bars, fruit, raw veg - a selection of and not all of these every day I might add! For a drink I either had pineapple juice or a can of coke. I also used to buy the occasional large greasy sausage roll from the school tuck shop. I am sure that most parents these days would be horrified by my lunchbox contents but they didn't do me any harm and I was always of normal weight! Edited to add that I can't believe that kids here are not allowed to eat certain things that their parents send with them! I can understand the nut thing because of severe allergies but what business is it of the school if you wish to put a treat in your child's lunch box?! If they consider that you are pumping your child full of nothing but rubbish then they should have a word with you but a treat amongst the healthy stuff isn't the end of the world surely? edited by dibdab on 29/11/2011

They often do good offers as well which include dinner at Frankies and late checkout - the offers are on their website. Have in mind that some items are not slowed to travel internationally like liquid, etc. If they require more packing the Post office have boxes, you just need to pay for it. It is actually cheaper that the Courier, but not very slow as you could imagine :) Good luck Thank you! :)

I would call it back and if it really is impossible to get anywhere without an extension number I would dial random extension numbers until I got through to someone and then would see if they can help me find the right person or department - if it is a big company they may have a HR or recruitment department. How did you apply for the job? If an email address then send an email to the same address again.

The BlackBerry is great for BBM but Whatsapp does the same job so I can use that on a different phone. I find the BlackBerry internet to be poor, probably due to the small screen, iPhones etc are much more user friendly for the internet and the apps seem to be a lot better. I used to be on the 49 AED package and could not get on the internet to download whatsapp - I have now upgraded to the 99 AED package as having whatsapp saves me a fortune texting friends and family at home because none of them have BlackBerries.

Wow I can't believe some people have visitors who expect them to pay for everything! We had visitors last week and they bought us a nice bottle of champagne to say thank you for having them to stay and also paid for dinner one night - other than that we split everything 50/50. Other visitors have gone to the supermarket when we are at work and have had dinner ready for when we got home - even though I tell them that they are on holiday and should relax. Having said that, we do get occasional comments from our friends at home about how we like spending money etc and yes we do have more than at home and we do have fun but I believe in living life to the full and it is up to us about how we spend out money - it makes me mad when other people comment and tell us what we should or shouldn't be spending money on! But we haven't had anyone expecting us to pick up the bill for anything.

It depends whether he wants to live close to work or is willing to have a commute. For that budget he could find a nice apartment in some areas of the Marina, it would be great for him to live near a metro station as he would then be able to get the metro to work - Emirates Towers is within walking distance of a metro station. I use the metro every day and it is great. Or Jumeirah Lakes Towers would have a great apartment for his budget - again it would be good to live near one of the metro stations, however JLT isn't as good an area as there is still a lot of development going on - it is quickly improving though. I have friends who live in the Lofts building in Downtown area if he wanted to be close to work and they are really nice apartments with a great view, not sure of cost though.

We have done 3 Christmas's here and the best were always the ones where we did our own Christmas dinner and festivities at home. We have done one Christmas dinner at a hotel and it didnt feel like Christmas at all but just another brunch on a weekend. Whereas the years where we bought and cooked our own Christmas dinner, had Christmas music, Christmas films on the TV, crackers etc, it really really felt like Christmas! I would highly suggest doing it at home and making an effort to get in all things Christmas! Thanks Lil - we'll definitely consider that. We just thought as it's only the two of us, our oven is AWFUL, and there might be mad rampage for the turkeys in the supermarkets, that we'd be better off going out for Christmas dinner. But perhaps we'll put it back on our options list :) You certainly can't beat Christmas at home. We were away on our honeymoon last Christmas, and as amazing as it was, Christmas day was quite sad actually! You could get christmas dinner delivered from a hotel? I haven't tried it myself but have heard that Jumeirah Beach Hotel will do a great turkey with all the trimmings - would probably be cheaper than going out and nicer!

Did they buy them online? When you purchase them you can choose your seats so they should have been given this option if they bought them from the Yas Marina site.

I sorted it all our online when we moved in to our place, didn't have to visit an office at all - unfortunately I cannot remember how long the connection took and how it was done because it was over 2 years ago. I was a 'first timer' with DEWA then and it was no problem. It was easy to do, I had to submit scanned documents and pay the deposit and all was done online. One of the easier things I have done in Dubai in fact. I have had absolutely no end of issues with DEWA since then but that's another story :) edited by dibdab on 03/11/2011

- Contact lens products (can never find them here and if I ask for them, I usually get a blank look) - Contact lenses (as I'm blind as a bat) - Nescafé Frappé (it's not even in the supermarket back home, have to go to the Nestlé shop) - Magazines (in French and English) - White tea for DH - DVDs With all the pressies DS gets each time, I usually struggle to close my suitcase! ;) I get white tea with pomegranate in Almaya in the Marina, I haven't seen plain white tea though if that is what you need. Also sorry if this is a stupid question but which contact lense producta do you struggle to get here? I get lenses and solution without a problem. The only thing I can't get is the type of holder I like for them - I can only get the flat ones and not the cylindrical ones, I have to get my Mum to send me her spares! DH also found white tea with mandarin but he prefers the plain one. My lens problem is basically because my eye sight is bad and not all places seem to have gas permeable lenses here. Also I know the products can be find (I use Boston) but rather than hunt around for them I buy them home! As for the cases DH gets them from me in the UK but only coz they are cheaper :) Ah fair enough - I just get bog standard contacts so I'm not too fussy about brands. Can you actually get those cases here then? No opticians ever seem to know what I'm talking about when I ask them!
